Herern is described a heat conduction model which has been developed to predict the pressure distribution within a reservoir being subjected to rrnsteady-state depletion. Although potentiometric models have been widely used to study reservoir pressure distribution, their application is limited to the study of steady-state cases. Electrical analyzers may be used to study unsteady-state phenomena, but their application and simulation have certain limitations. Much of the now accepted theory of unsteady-state fluid flow in porous media has evolved from previous heat conduction knowledge. An analogy between the flow of fluid in an unsymmetrical reservoir and con-duct ion of heat in a similarly shaped unsymmetrical metal plate is made to show adaptability of the hear conduction principle to transient reservoir cases. A description of the model and necessary instrumenrarion is included. Data show influence of well location on pressure distribution during unsteady-state deple[ion. Application of results is made to a hypothetical reservoir and to a reservoir located in an irregular aquifer. INTRODUCTION Development of methods for predicting behavior of petroleum reservoirs has resulted partially from adaptation of electrical and thermal flow concepts to the flow of fluids through porous media. Extensive investigation of electrical and thermal flow problems has resulted in mathematical solutions applicable to many reservoir problems. The relative ease of measuring electrical flow has brought wide acceptance of the use of the potentiometric model to study certain field problems. Potentiometric models are restricted to the study of steady-state conditions because of the instantaneous response of electrical flow to changes in the applied potential. The electrical reservoir analyzer has been one of our most useful instruments for studying certain phases of unsteady-state behavior1. Other than approximation techniques, no method exists for determining pressure distribution in an irregular reservoir during primary depletion. Heat flow, like fluid flow, is inherently transient. The model described here was developed to use this transient nature of heat flow, measurable in the laboratory, to simulate transient flow of fluids in the porous medium of the reservoir above the bubble point. A metal plate shaped like the reservoir to be studied was heated by a "well" source. Temperature increase in the plate is analogous to pressure decline in the field if the field is being depleted, or pressure increase if fluid is being injected. This study is intended to determine the feasibility of using the transient nature of the heat flow to study the transient behavior of fluid flow. It is hoped that this new technique will aid in the understanding of one of the more complex phases of reservoir engineering. THE FLUID FLOW-HEAT CONDUCTION ANALOGY The similarity of the equations which describe the flow of fluids through a porous medium and the conduction of heat through a solid is well known2. Tries article summarizes the successful incorporation of a flash-flooding stream into the tailing-disposal system at the St. Joseph Lead Company's Federal Division mill, in St. Francois County, Missouri. The mill was built in 1906, by the Federal Lead Co., as its No. 3 mill for the concentration of southeastern Missouri lead ores, and damming Davis Creek was first considered in 1908. Plans were made also in 1925 and in 1937. Dam layouts varied from a reinforced concrete structure to a barrier built of tailings alone. All were abandoned because of liability that would be incurred by flashflood rupturing of an incompleted dam. By 1942 mill capacity had reached 12,000 tons daily and increasing tailing-disposal costs again focused attention on the Davis Creek basin. This time the problem of riskless dam building was solved. Moreover, most of the items that appeared in the answer were materials that normally required wasting and the major portion of labor involved performed functions that it would normally have done, without constructive benefit, elsewhere. The new layout also made possible advantageous changes in mill-water supply pumping; static head being reduced from 514 ft to 95 ft, friction head from 4900 ft to 2860 ft, and pumping can be done now at periods of low power demand. The following facts about the Davis Creek watershed explain the 36-year reluctance to reach these, and other, benefits. Size: 3600 acres. Outline: roughly pear-shaped, 2 1/2 by 3 miles at the largest dimensions. Topography: mostly hill land with steep valleys. Relief : 760 minimum to 1153 maximum. Maximum rainfall: 3.36 in. per hour. Permanent water: none natural. Now 2200 gpm discharged through 16-in. drill hole from mine pumps underground. Geology: the 17 acres near dam centerline is Bonne Terre dolomite covered with sand and gravel eroded from Pleistocene beds that cap some of the hills. The remainder of the pond basin is on Davis shale. Soil cover: mostly second-growth timber with some abandoned fields; all subject to careless burning, which reduces water-retaining ability. Flood history: flash-flooding that had taken at least one life. Downstream values: two railroad bridges before creek intersection with Flat River. Immediately below confluence, a highway bridge, a low-water crossing, a few business establishments and several blocks of residences. In July 1942 the following segments of an ingenious plan were put into operation. A ditch 270 ft long, 16 ft wide and 5 1/2 ft deep was excavated to bedrock in the gravelly soil along the proposed dam's centerline. This excavation, which exposed many gravel-filled channels, was run full of slimes drawn from a riser set in the top of an adjacent tailings-disposal

RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. This paper reports results of studies of sulfidiza-tion of base-metal oxides and silicates with gaseous sulfur, hydrogen sulfide gas and pyrite and of their subsequent flotation with xanthate collectors. It has been established that a 100% conversion of the oxides of lead, zinc, copper and manganese into their respective sulfides is possible and is a function of reaction time and temperature. Sulfidization of chrysocolla (with malachite and azurite inclusions) resulted in a product containing covellite, chalcocite and digenite in proportions depending on conditions of sulfidization. Reacting cassiterite with gaseous sulfur, H2S or pyrite at various reaction temperatures resulted in its partial conversion to a tin sulfide. Flotation of the products of sulfidization indicated that their behavior is similar to that of natural sulfide minerals, the recovery being a function of the con-version of the oxides to their respective sulfides. The gradual depletion of high-grade sulfide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of nonsulfides possible, although, in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulfidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to to In recent years, Bautista and sollenberger4 have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulfides by reacting them with molten sulfur. This paper presents the results of .investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulfidized minerals. It is divided into two parts: The first describes the sulfidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and the second presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulfidization. SULFIDIZATION OF METAL OXIDES AND SILICATES Experimental Procedure: SULFIDIZATION WITH HYDROGEN SULFIDE GAS — Sulfidization with H2S gas was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace (Fig. 1). The temperature of the furnace was regulated by means of a Variac and determined with a chromel-alumel thermocouple. The constant temperature zone in the furnace was about 6 in. in length, and it was within this zone that the experiments were carried out. The gases employed were supplied from standard compressed gas cylinders, and passed through a glass-wool filtering tower before entering the Pyrex reaction tube. Gaseous products were bubbled through a water tower (used as a flow indicator) and excess H2S was burned off at the end of the outlet tube. Samples of reagents or minerals were placed in a 3-in. Alundum boat and inserted within the constant temperature zone of the furnace. Nitrogen gas (6 ppm O2 content) was passed through the tubes at room temperature to remove air in the tube, and continued to pass while the furnace was heating up. When the required temperature was reached, H2S was allowed to enter the tube and the supply of nitrogen was shut off. At the end of the reaction period, the reverse procedure was carried out, the samples being cooled to room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere. The flow rate of H2S gas was maintained fairly constant in all experiments, although the rate was not determined. SULFIDIZATION WITH SULFUR POWDER - To study the sulfidization of minerals with sulfur (liquid or gaseous), samples of the mineral, together with a measured quantity of sulfur powder, were placed in a stainless steel (SS316) reaction vessel (Fig. 2). The reaction vessel was heated in a vertical resistance coil furnace, the temperature being regulated through a Variac. At the end of the experiment the vessel was cooled to room temperature before the sample was removed. Cooled products were leached with CS2 to remove any free sulfur. SULFIDIZATION OF TIN CONCENTRATES - Fifty gram samples of sulfidized tin ore were prepared by mixing -48 mesh Bolivian tin concentrate with -48 mesh Ottawa sand in various proportions and sulfi-dizing these samples with H2S in the horizontal tube

The first unit of the comprehensive group of pilot plants built by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev., under a defense appropriation has started operations, demonstrating definitely the applicability of a process developed in the Bureau laboratories. About 12 1/2 lb. of manganese is needed for the production of every ton of steel, and substitution is difficult. The United States produces only about 3 per cent of its total needs of this ore. A mathematical analysis has shown that the primary factors affecting the deposition of cement in unfractured perforations during squeeze-cementing operations are: the properties of the cement slurry, the geometry of the perforations, and the filtration time. The validity of the analysis has been substantiated by laboratory investigations. The information presented in this paper makes possible the prediction of the rate of deposition of cement in and about unfractured perforations under given squeeze-cementing conditions, the proper filtration time to control the amount of deposition to any desired value, and the deposition properties needed in cement slurries to restrict to any desired degree the formation of nodes of cement .Solids inside the casing. INTRODUCTION The deposition of solids against a permeable medium by the process of filtration is an important property of a cement slurry. General recognition of the role of filtration in the use of cement in wells is evident in view of the fact that several patents on low-water-loss cements have been issued during the past few years. In the conventional, high-pressure squeeze-cementing technique, a large volume of cement slurry is usually displaced into the area surrounding the perforated interval after the formation has been fractured hydraulically.&apos; Near the end of the job, the pumping rate is slowed or stopped intermittently in an effort to obtain a high pressure in the wellbore. The way in which a high pressure is obtained is not understood thoroughly. but it is be- lieved to be caused by the deposition of a rigid mass of compacted cement particles either in the fractures of the formations or inside the casing opposite the perforated interval. In a method of squeeze-cementing introduced several years ago, a small amount of cement slurry is squeezed into the perforations at a low pressure to avoid fracturing the formation. The filling of the unfractured perforations with cement particles by the process of filtration is important to the success of this technique. Early in the development of this low-pressure squeeze-cementing technique, laboratory and field-size experiments showed that conventional, neat cement slurries were unsatisfactory if the tubing was extended into or through the perforated section of the casing. The extremely high filtration rate of neat cement slurries caused the deposition of a compacted mass of cement inside the casing and made it impossible to remove excess cement by reverse circulation and difficult to withdraw the tubing. Because the need for cements with a reduced filtration rate was obvioils and urgent, modified cements containing 12 per cent bentonite were used until research was completed on modified cements containing 25 per cent bentonite.< These modified cements were useful in the solution of the immediate problem, but the following questions remained unanswered: (I) what is the optimum filtration rate of cement slurries for this application, (2) how long should the squeeze pressure be applied. and (3) how great are the effects of squeeze pressure and well temperature on the rate of deposition? Furthermore, the relationship of the filtration properties of cement slurries to the dimensions of the perforations and the wellbore was unknown. In order to obtain information relative to these basic considerations, a systematic evaluation of all the factors involved in the deposition of Cement during low-pressure squeeze-cementing operations was initiated. A two-dimensional, three-phasereservoir simulator was programmed for a large memory digital computer. It was designed to provide a practical solution to describing the complex physical relation between the natural forces and the physical properties of a heterogeneous reservoir when subjected to a specific set of conditions. A reservoir study is briefly described to illustrate application of the model. A full volumetric account of three phases (oil, gas and water) is performed simultaneously throughout an integration net representing the reservoir. Absence of one or two of the phases is treated as a special case of the more general situation. Expansion (or contraction) of all phases, including rock expansion, is performed so that the pressure calculation is the general unsteady-state case. To account for the large variations of subsurface elevation encountered in some reseruoirs, and to allow for segregation of the various phases, a gravity head term is included in the basic drive potential. Appropriate fluid and rock properties are used in polynominal surface form (functions of pressure and/or depth) or they can be entered as space variables at each position of the integration net. An unsteady-state water influx calculation, based on the method of van Everdingen and Hurst, l was connected to the boundary of the matrix to simulate aquifers of various sizes. In addition to reservoir calculations, three-phase fluid flow from the producing depth to the wellhead, including provisions for gas lift, was incorporated in the simulator. A workover routine was also built which can automatically switch to a different set of production relations when a gas-oil ratio or water fraction reaches a limit; or it can shut-in the well if prescribed. INTRODUCTION This paper describes a reservoir engineering mathematical simulator used to represent the complex interaction of natural forces and physical properties of a reservoir during natural depletion or with various injection schemes. The simulator, which was programmed for a large memory digital computer, is a two-dimensional calculation which handles three mobile fluid phases simultaneously (oil, gas and water). Basic requisites for the method are individual well production and pressure data, hydrocarbon fluid properties, geological data (producing depth and net sand), capillary pressure data, relative permeability data and permeability and porosity information. Matching the past performance of a combination drive reservoir often has yielded information concerning continuity and the validity of basic data. Detailed predictions of future performance can be made for continuation of current depletion methods (natural depletion) as well as for various types of recovery by gas or water injection. Combination injection cases and pattern studies can also be performed. Workover programs, gas lift and different types of artificial lift programs have been investigated using a technique similar to that described by Kern and Nicholson2 except that conditions of pressure and saturation at the block within which the well is located are used rather than average reservoir conditions. Drilling additional wells to optimize profit was explored, both as to number and location, by placing wells at different spots within the reservoir matrix. Special depletion processes can be examined, such as upstructure drainage and lateral (or strike) waterfloods in thin oil columns. In one case the mathematics of the simulator were modified to calculate the displacement in the vertical plane rather than in the horizontal plane. In this manner specific reservoir problems can be studied, such as coning of gas and/or water around production points, fingering along permeable stringers or, more generally, frontal advances in a heterogeneous section.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer&apos;s standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee&apos;s point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

THE fifth annual convention of coal-operating men, with the usual exposition of coal-mine equipment, was held at Cincinnati, May 7 to 11 inclusive, and was fully up to the high standard set by previous years. This spring meeting has come to be one of the most helpful services to industry performed by the Ameri-can Mining Congress and a center at which operators and engineers easily and quickly get into touch with the newest and best things in practice and equipment. Over 200 exhibitors showed this year and very little if anything that is new `failed to be shown. The ex-hibits were well arranged and adequate rather than elaborate. They attracted the careful attention of the members and guests of the Congress, admission being by badge rather than by ticket sold to, the general public. B.: The recent cable I sent you for a transfer of $200,000 was the outcome of the diligence and perspicacity of our group which, as you know, is laboring under severe hardships here in Rondônia. I only mention the latter difficulties in passing because no reply has been received to our urgent appeal for money. As much as I detest appearing to plead for more attention than you feel called upon to pay to our forgotten mission, I can assure you that it would be in the best interest of the company for you to do so. The fact is, we have been able to outmaneuver the competition and have succeeded in securing pesquizas on some of the most promising cassiterite gravels. We have not been able, up to now, to do much bulk sampling (for lack of funds) but our preliminary panning shows great promise as you can see from the enclosed assay sheets.
