MINERALS and mineral resources are recognized as one of the things that nations are prone to quarrel about. The territory that was arbitrarily incorporated into the Polish Republic after the World War produces a variety of essential minerals on a substantial scale. The accompanying table has been compiled to give some idea of the relative importance of this production. Poland, before the recent war started, had an area of 150,000 sq.mi., just a little larger than the State of Montana. Its population was 32,000,000, equal to that of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Though not a highly industrialized country it nevertheless has important mines, steel plants, petroleum refineries, and sundry metal-fabricating manufactories. Coal, petroleum, iron and steel, zinc, lead, pyrite, potash, and salt are produced in excess of the country's domestic consumption. It has no appreciable production of copper, chromium, tungsten, nickel, tin, mercury, manganese, aluminum, magnesite, fluorspar, or graphite.

MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

Stress corrosion is defined and certain examples are illustrated. A number of test methods, to determine the resistance of materials to stress corrosion, are being developed at Wright Field. The criterion as to the validity of a method is stated. Three types of specimens and the method of stressing each type are described. Five different corrosive conditions are set forth. The results of tests to date, although too few for any general conclusions to be arrived at, are presented. The program for the continuation of the investigation is indicated. A bibliography is included. The development of the method of loading a cantilever-type specimen, so that a nearly constant stress at a large deflection may be realized, is presented as Appendix I.

Introduction In 1977, the US Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the state of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the state. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by USBM and state personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1:100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two US Geological Survey (USGS) 7 % - min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than zt 91.4 m. Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). [Fig. 1] shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. [Table 1] gives a comparison of acreage measured for several mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS system vs. aerial photo measurements. The success of the preliminary work resulted in the South Carolina Land Resources Conservation Commission submitting a proposal to USBM for funding to expand the scope of work to other mineral mining operations within the state and determine if Landsat Imagery could be used to accurately locate and measure mining and reclamation activity on a continuing basis. Three separate tasks were proposed for selected kaolin mines in Aiken County: Task 1, to measure changes in active mine developments over the period 1974-77; Task 2, to measure reclamation activity, and, if time permitted, seasonal changes in mine signatures over the same period of time; and Task 3, to classify one complete mining operation (i.e., differentiate between active, spoil, overburden, water, reclaimed portions and surrounding terrain. The major effort was centered around J.M. Hubeis Richardson mine. Mining operations were progressing in a northerly direction and included three areas of reclamation: one prior to 1974; one started during early 1974; and one reclaimed during 1976. A discussion of all work done under the grant is available in the March 1979 Final Report listed under References. Computer compatible tapes (CCTs) containing MSS data from Landsat Path 18, Row 37, were purchased from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) covering the period February 1974 through January 1977. The MSS data were processed on the General Electric Image 100 using parallelepiped classification at the EROS Data Center's Data Analysis Laboratory, Sioux Falls, SD, and at the Stanford Remote Sensing Laboratory, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, utilizing both an unsupervised classification (ISOMIX) and a supervised classification (sequential discriminant analysis). Studies at Stanford University Remote Sensing Lab (SRSL). In Feburary 1977, initial work was begun at Stanford using the STANSORT computer program running on a DEC PDP-10 (Honey, Prelat, and Lyon, 1974). This software is fully interactive and designed to study Landsat CCT data at high resolution (small areas) on a pixel-by-pixel basis (Lyon, 1977). Unsupervised Classification. The initial step was to locate the Richardson mine on the positive print of the full Landsat scene from CCT 1644-15252, dated 6/17/74. This was relatively easy due to a large abandoned kaolin mine and a long narrow pond clearly visible in the scene. Two unsupervised classifications of the Richardson mine were run using ISOMIX clustering (Honey, Prelat and Lyon, 1974). (ISOMIX essentially follows the interactive clustering procedures of ISOCLS Kan, Holley, and Parker. 1973). Although the classifications were successfully accomplished, it was apparent from the TV display that the results did not clearly define the mine areas. A supervised classification would have to be made in order to clearly separate each portion of the mine. Supervised Classification. SOME observations relative to the U-Zn system have been made by other investigators. Chipman1 and Carter2 have reported the preparation of several U-Zn alloys and point out that these alloys are generally difficult to prepare. Chipman1 reported evidence for a high melting compound at about 90 atomic pct Zn and the possible existence of a eutec-tic between the compound and uranium. Raynor," in a theoretical discussion of the alloying properties of uranium, included zinc among the elements predicted to have little or no solubility in a, p, or y uranium. In the present investigation, thermal analyses, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor-pressure data were obtained to determine the phase boundaries. The relatively high zinc pressure over most of the alloys at temperatures of 900 °C and above proved troublesome and special techniques had to be employed in preparing suitable alloys. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The metals employed in this investigation were Ames Laboratory biscuit uranium containing less than 500 ppm total impurities and Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker Analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both with a purity of 99.99+ pct. Due to the high vapor pressure of zinc and the high reactivity of both uranium and zinc with oxygen at only moderately high temperatures, alloys were prepared in closed containers which had either been evacuated or evacuated and filled with helium. High purity magnesia, magnesia containing 10 pct calcium fluoride, and tantalum proved to be suitable crucible materials. Tw-o different procedures, described below, were used to prepare alloys, the latter being the most satisfactory. The metals, uranium turnings and granulated zinc, were cleaned with dilute nitric acid, rinsed, dried, and placed immediately in a helium-fill'ed dry box. The two metals were placed' in a 10 mil Ta crucible. The charge was enclosed in the tantalum crucible by welding on a preformed tantalum cap. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless steel (AISI 309) bomb. The bomb was made by welding a piece of stainless steel plate on each end of a stainless steel pipe. All these operations were carried out in a helium atmosphere. These assemblies were heated in a muffle furnace at temperatures between 1100" and 1200°C for 10 to 15 min or held as long as 15 to 20 hr in the 950" to 1000°C temperature range before quenching. Spectrographic and chemical analyses showed no tantalum pickup by the alloys, indicating no reaction between the alloys and the crucibles. However, some of these crucibles failed, probably due to imperfections in the welds of the stainless steel or tantalum crucibles. The second and most satisfactory method was to prepare the alloys by powder metallurgy techniques. The procedure was to press degreased and acid-etched uranium turnings with granulated zinc into 20 g compacts under 20,000-psi pressure. The compacts were placed in MgO crucibles, and sealed in evacuated Vycor or fused silica tubes. The alloys were then heated as long as two weeks at about 550°C in a muffle furnace. The pressed compacts were observed to expand by several volume percent during heating and it was necessary to make allowances for this expansion in order to avoid breaking the crucible and Vycor tube. This method was found very satisfactory for preparing alloys which were suitable for thermal analysis or vapor pressure studies. Experimental Methods and Results The phase diagram for the U-Zn system at 1 atrn pressure, shown in Fig. 1, is based primarily on vapor pressure measurements and on thermal analysis taken at temperatures below 950°C. Fig. 2 shows the U-Zn diagram at 5 atrn pressure, constructed on the basis of thermal analysis of alloys in sealed containers up to 1150°C and on the basis of metallographic, X-ray, and analytical data. The alloys sealed under vacuum were actually under their own vapor pressure and those sealed in an atmosphere of helium were under an additional pressure due to the helium. At temperatures up to 1100°C the zinc pressure is 5 atrn or less for these alloys; consequently the maximum pressure over the alloys sealed under a helium atmosphere was 10 atrn or less at temperatures up to 1100°C. Changes in pressure of this order of magnitude do not appreciably alter the position of most solid-solid or liquid-solid phase boundaries. In constructing the phase diagram for a pressure of 5 atm, the effect of pressure on all phase boundaries except those for liquid-vapor or solid-vapor regions was considered negligible.

It has been a matter of concern to the petroleum industry to determine what effect the capillary term has on saturation profiles, since these profiles determine ultimate economic oil recovery. In their original solution of the non-capillary two-phase flow problem, Buckley and Leverett&apos; showed that solutions of the two-phase flow equations became multiple-valued in saturation. Since it is physically unrealistic for saturation to have more than one value at a given position, Buckley and Leverett resolved this difficulty by introducing a saturation discontinuity or "shock". They evaluated the strength and position of the shock from material balance considerations. Recently Sheldon, Zondek and Cardwell&apos; have demonstrated that the method of characteristics can be used to solve this and related problems. Owing to capillarity it is physically unlikely that saturation shocks occur in an oil reservoir. Buckley and Leverett suggested that the effects of interfacial tensions should be included in the fluid flow equations, if the solutions are to give continuous single-valued saturation distributions. An analogy to this problem is encountered in the theory of wpersonic compressible flow where the introduction of the viscous term eliminates shock behavior. However, the mathematical form of the capillary term in the porous medium fluid flow equations differs from the viscosity term in the Navier-Stokes equation. This paper demons~rates that capillarity does eliminate the triple-valued behavior and indicates the magnitude of capillary and gravity effects on the saturation profile for a variety of systems. DERIVATION OF LAGRANGIAN AND EULERIAN FORMS OF THE DISPLACEMENT EQUATION The equations representing capillary, two-phase flow are given by applying Darcy&apos;s law and a material balance condition for each phase. A description is given of the development of a process for making low sulphur steel on furnaces fired with 2 1/2 pet sulphur oil. Slag and metal are analyzed at melt. Slag weight is estimated. A simple method for calculating necessary lime additions for making 0.025 and 0.035 pct sulphur steel is given. DURING the last 15 years John Summers & Sons have been confronted increasingly by the problem of producing a low sulphur steel from high sulphur materials. The principles adopted, the processes used, the data collected on a furnace specially set aside to study this problem, and speculation on future developments are dealt with in this paper. This study is limited to two melting shops which make sheet steel only, of the following analysis: C, 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.33; S, 0.04, 0.035, 0.03, and 0.025; and P, 0.02 and 0.015. All the processes described have reference to the manufacturing of this steel and are not necessarily applicable, without modification, to other steels. The raw materials used are given in Table I. Development of Process About 1934, Schenck&apos;s work on phosphorus was applied to frame quantitative rules for the removal of phosphorus, with great success. We could however, neither in our own work nor in the voluminous literature, find any assistance to frame quantitative furnace rules to remove sulphur. Perhaps, we should have persevered with Schenck&apos;s outstanding chapter on sulphur in The Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, but we missed the importance of one (Ss) sentence on p. 478. "Evidently this ratio -------- is [S] the important quantity to be considered from the point of view of chemical reaction; it is clear that the sulphur content of the steel alone, as frequently given in the literature cannot suffice for judging the success of the reaction unless special details are given regarding the sulphur charge and the amount of slag."&apos; We were not however very successful in getting values for Schenck&apos;s "n" that agreed with (S) arrived at by our direct analysis. [S] In addition to Schenck&apos;s work much attention was given to V value. The formula selected for V was: (SCaO) — 1.57 (2 P2O5) (S SiO2) After plotting many charges a curve was obtained, based upon the relationship between the percentage sulphur in the finished steel and V value, Fig. 1. For a long time this was used as standard with about a 60 to 70 pct success on producer-gas fired furnaces, if all uprising scrap was used and no bought scrap used. An inspection of this curve shows clearly that it is not a quantitative manufacturing process, and that it was not sure enough to go to the trouble and expense of doing stage analysis for P,O,,

Ther?nal, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram and standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Sw-Zn system. Four compounds, SmZn, SmZn2 , SmZn4.s, and SmZn8.5, melt congruently at 960°, 94Z°, 908°, and 940°C, respectively. The cornpounds SlnZns, Sm3Znll, and SnzZn7.3 undergo peritectic decomposition at 855", 870°, and 890C, respectively. Another compound of uncertain stoichiometry, SmZn11, undergoes peritectic decomposition at 760°C. Four entectics were observed with the following compositions in weight percent zinc and eutectic tenzperatures in degrees Centigrade: 12 pct, 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. An allotropic transformation and a composition range were observed for the SmZnz compound. The transfor)nation varies from 905" to 865°C as the zinc content increases from 16.0 to 48.5 wt pct, respectively. The free energy of formation of the compounds at 50PC varies between -15.9 kcal per mole for SmZn to -51.1 kcal per mole for SmZn,.,. Corresponding enthalpies vary between -19.2 to -78.3 kcal per mole. The ther-modynamic properties for the liquid alloys are described by the relations: A search of the literature revealed very little information on the Sm-Zn system. Chao et al.&apos; as well as Iandelli and palenzonai have reported the structure of SmZn to be cubic B2 type and Kuz&apos;ma et al3. have reported the structure of -sm2zn17 to be of the Th2Ni17 type. The purpose of this work was to establish the phase diagram of this system, to determine the zinc vapor pressure over the solid two-phase regions of the SYstem, and to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the compounds. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in this investigation were Bunker Hill slab zinc 99.99 wt pct pure and Ames Laboratory samarium. Analysis of the samarium by chemical, spectrographic, and vacuum-fusion methods gave the following average impurities in ppm: Nd, <200; Eu, <100; Gd, <100; Y, <50;Ca, 225; Ta, 400; Mg, 10; Cu, ~50; 0, 175; H, 20; and N, 15. The elements Fe, Si, Cr, Ni, Al, and W were not detected. The samarium was received as sponge metal and was kept under argon except when being cut with shears and when being weighed. Tantalum was found to be a suitable container for alloys with zinc contents up to the Sm2Znl, stoichio-metry. At higher zinc contents the grain boundaries of the tantalum containers were penetrated by the alloy and the containers failed during prolonged annealing. About 25 g of massive zinc and samarium sponge were sealed in tantalum crucibles equipped with thermocouple wells. These crucibles were in turn sealed in stainless-steel jackets. All closures were made by arc welding under an argon atmosphere. The samples were equilibrated in an oscillating furnace and in some cases were given various heat treatments in a soaking furnace. After appropriate heat treatment the steel jackets were removed and the alloy subjected to differential thermal analysis. The apparatus was calibrated against pure zinc and pure copper and found to reproduce the accepted melting points within 1°C. Alloys were subsequently subjected to metallographic examination and those of appropriate compositions were used for X-ray diffraction analysis and for zinc vapor pressure determinations. The vapor pressures were determined by the dewpoint method. Both the differential analysis and dewpoint measuring apparatuses have been described in earlier papers.4, 5 All alloy samples were etched with Nital (0.5 to 3 pct nitric acid in alcohol) except the samarium-rich alloys. These more reactive alloys were electro-polished in a 1 to 6 pct HClO4 in methanol solution at -700c at a potential of 50 v. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Phase Diagram. The results of thermal analysis are indicated by the points on the phase diagram, Fig. 1. Eight compounds and four eutectics were observed. The composition of the compounds and their melting or peritectic temperatures are given on the phase diagram. The four eutectic compositions in wt pct zinc and eutectic temperatures in % are: 12 pct,- 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. The stoichiometry of the most zinc-rich compound is still uncertain, but is very likely either SmZnll or SmZnlz. However, to simplify the presentation which follows it will be referred to as SmZnll. As shown on the phase diagram the phase regions for some of the samarium-rich alloys have not been unambiguously established. A sample of pure samarium was observed to transform at 924°C and to melt at 1074"C, in good agreement with corresponding val-

DIFFRACTION micrography provides a useful tool for studying complex strain fields. Newkirk1 observed an X-ray diffraction effect due to strain interactions at the intersection of slip lines in LiF and attributed this effect to a reduction of primary extinction due to strain-gradients. It is the object of the current study to correlate the observations and rationalize the appearance of the strain fields around intersecting slip planes in x-ray extinction contrast studies by a semiempirical method. Fig. 1 shows typical strain patterns observed by Newkirk on (200) reflections in LiF using chromium radiation and a variation of the Berg-Barrett (B-B) technique. In other reflections (e.g., {220}) the strain patterns are absent. If one defines a vector 3 along the striations from the more to the less dense portion, and a vector v in the direction of the X-ray beam parallel to the reflecting plane, such that both 3 and v lie in the reflecting plane of the crystal, Fig. 1, then the positions of the striations on (200) reflections appear to be confined such that where is the angle between v and 3, Fig. 1. It will be seen later that 3 is the projection of Sb on the reflecting planes. In some instances the strain effects are observed only above the slip plane, Fig. l(C), in others only below, Fig. l(D). Where the strains appear to be both above and below the slip line, Fig. l(E), one sees that there are actually two slip lines present, Fig. 1(F) and (G). Furthermore, the strain patterns are observed in the vicinity of the intersection of emergent edge dislocations (diagonal lines on the micrograph) with emergent screw dislocations (horizontal lines on the micrograph), e.g., Fig. l(HJ) and (MN), but not in the vicinity of the intersection of two emergent edge dislocation arrays, Fig. l(HJ) and (KL). However, in the latter case the contrast of the dislocation array itself is reduced along (KL) and increased along (HJ). Line (AB) in Fig. 1 is the edge of the crystal, and the material to the left of (AB) is the side of the sample. Any empirical correlation will have to include most, if not all of the aforementioned observations. Lang2 and Newkirk1 determined that the condition for contrast is given by g-b#0 [2] where b is the Burgers&apos; vector and g the diffraction vector (normal to the reflecting planes). If one assumes that the direction of the observed strain fields is given by the vector sum of the slip vectors (Sb1) of the intersecting slip planes, then Eq. [2] may be generalized to g-S#0 [3]

The author applies the theory of hydrodynamic stability to fluid flow in porous media and concludes that the displacement of miscible liquids is stable if the stability coefficient, as defined by Eq. 19.2 or Eq. 27.0, is positive. The conclusion is invalid, however, since it is based on a faulty argument. To demonstrate this, the reader is referred to Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 of the paper which describe, in differential form, the first-order disturbances c, u, v, w and p. In these same equations, cx, cz, gl, g3 and are functions of the stable concentration c. This concentration c is known and depends on x, z and t (the author assumes cy = 0). It follows that cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ are also functions of x, z and t. With this in mind, we turn to Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 which were derived from Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 by substituting Eq. 6.0. The significance of this substitution is that the author thereby limits the solutions of Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 to equations of the form of Eq. 6.0. Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 represent an infinite linear system with five unknowns: c, u, v, w and p. The coefficients cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ in this system are known at each point and at each instant; the coefficients containing derivatives of f are unknown. If this infinite linear system in c, u, v, w and p is to have a nontrivial solution, then it is indeed necessary (as the author states) that the determinant of the coefficient matrix of Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5, i.e., ( A 1, be equal to zero. This condition, however, is not sufficient. A non-trivial solution exists if, and only if, the rank of the coefficient matrix of the entire infinite system is smaller than five. In other words. all minors of order five must vanish and only if all the coefficients in Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 are constant is this equivalent to the condition |A| =0. Constant coefficients means that gl, g3 and µ, for instance, are constant; and, since they depend on c it follows that c must be constant. We conclude that the condition I A I = 0, on which the author bases his calculations, is necessary and sufficient for a nontrivial solution only if the concentration c is constant. In other words, the author does not investigate the stability of a miscible displacement but, rather, only the stability of the flow of a homogeneous liquid. The factors that determine the yield and crystal size in the two-temperature synthesis of A lp were examined. Low yields and small crystals were associated with low temperatures and pressure. Attempts to grow large crystals in the critical and supercritical region of phosphorus were unsuccessful. Crystal size increases markedly at elevated temperatures. Crystals grown at temperatures as high as 1450° C fluo-resced, under uv excitation, at energies close to the estimated band gap of about 2.4 ev, while crystals grown at lower temperatures tended to fluoresce in the red region of the spectrum. Those grown in the supercritical region showed no ALP fluorescence. Heating the high-temperature-grown ALP under vacuum greatly increased its fluorescence efficiency and moved the emission peak to higher energies. I HE III-V compounds, with few exceptions, have been prepared by the two-temperature method. In its classic form this technique is applicable to closed systems where at least one of the components, in this case the column V element, is a liquid or a solid with a high vapor pressure. One advantage of this method over flow systems is in its simplicity. In addition, because it is a closed system, it can, under the circumstances to be described later, be run at higher pressures of the volatile species than in flow systems. In instances where the III-V compound is soluble in the parent III metal to about 1 mol pct or higher, solution growth can be made to take place by slow cooling. This, for instance, is one way in which single-crystal GaP1 and Inp2 have been grown. Initial attempts to synthesize and grow A1P by this technique were not too successful; the yield was low and the crystals obtained were exceedingly small. The conditions required for improving the yield and growth by this technique were, therefore, sought. Two obvious conditions which could be controlling were examined. These were the temperature of the aluminum and the pressure of the phosphorus. The range of temperatures studied extended from about the melting point of aluminum, 660° to about 1450°C. The latter is dictated by the vapor pressure of aluminum which reaches about 1 Torr at that temperature and the limitations of the materials of construction as described in the next section. The pressure range of interest covers from below 1 atm to above the critical pressure of phosphorus, 82.2 atm. EXPERIMENTAL The Temperature of Aluminum as a Variable. A series of experiments were run in the conventional two-temperature manner. All refractories and quartz were dried by heating at 800° to 900° for a minimum of 24 hr, and usually much longer, before use. The aluminum

The accompanying sketch shows the interesting position of Salt Lake City with reference to Western mining areas and justifies its title "The Center of Western Mining." In the last twenty years, the area embraced within a circle of 600 miles radius with Salt Lake City as its center has produced 79.87% of the gold, 91.9% of the Silver, 77.47% of the copper, 53.61% of the lead and 26.55% of the zinc produced in the United States, including Alaska. This area also contains the greatest coal deposits of the continent, some of the greatest oil deposits, great iron deposits and many other important mineral resources. The 600-mile circle contained 69% of the active operators of other than coal mines and 40% of the men employed in mines other than coal mines of the United States, including Alaska, for the four-year period ended with 1923.

The purpose of the following research, as originally planned, was to investigate the influence of temperature upon the plate¬amalgamation process. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or washed, as gold dust, front the sand and gravel of streams. Interesting descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny&apos;s Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold was possible until efficient -crushing machines were devised. Heat and gas flow interactions in nonisothermal packed beds were examined in the paper. A study was made of the response of the system to a step or pulse change in the inlet gas temperature, with a fixed value of the overall pressure drop across the bed. Under these conditions the heat flow and fluid flow transients are coupled because the convective heat transfer rate is alfected by the mass flow rate of the gas which, in turn, for a fixed pressure drop will depend on the temperature profile in the system. The Problem was stated in terms of differential equations, which were integrated numerically. The parameters used in the computation were so chosen to reflect the operation of the stack region of blast furnaces and sinterbeds. The computed results showed that the pressure drop-flou1 relationships and the rate of progress of the temperature fronts (waves) were strongly interrelated and were also markedly affected by variations in particle size and in void fraction. MANY metallurgical processes involve the contact of solid particles with a gas stream in a packed bed arrangement under nonisothermal conditions. Examples are shaft furnaces, regenerators, pebble heaters, and the sinter process. Although the heat and mass transfer aspects of packed bed processing have been extensively studied, the associated flow phenomena and in particular the effects of nonisothermality on the flow, have received little attention to date. :In fact, most of the previous workers considered the flow rate of the carrier gas time invariant and independent of the heat or mass transfer processSzekely and carr2 have shown that the pressure drop-flow relationships in nonisothermal packed beds may be strongly affected by the temperature profile within the system. These authors have devised a method for relating the pressure drop to flow for a given temperature profile. thus providing an extension of the Ergun equation to steady nonisothermal systems. Finally, in a recent paper willmot3 examined the response of regenerators to externally imposed changes in the gas flow rate. Both these investigations were somewhat specialized since, in general, neither the temperature distribution nor the gas flow rate may be regarded as truly independent variables, thus the heat transfer and the fluid flow problems have to be solved simultaneously. The work reported here is divided into two parts: in Part 1 the general formulation is given and a detailed discussion is presented of fixed bed systems. Part is devoted to systems in which a gas and particulate solids are contacted in a counter flow arrangement. FORMULATION Consider a nonisothermal fixed packed bed, extending from through which a gas is flowing. The problem is to develop a relationship between pressure drop and gas flow (with the gas flow being the dependent variable) and to evaluate the rate at which a change in the gas temperature, imposed at the inlet, travels through the system. Let us consider an infinitesimal section of the bed and establish differential heat, mass, and mechanical energy balances over this region. In addition, relationships are needed describing the temperature dependence of gas density (equation of state) and the temperature dependence of viscosity. These may be written as: where c, and are constants. It is noted that in this formulation we neglected any temperature gradients within the solid particles, thus assuming these to be either sufficiently small or of sufficiently high thermal conductivity to meet this condition. The justification and consequences of this assumption will be mentioned in the discussion.

INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this chapter is to present the diagnostic features (geologic, mineralogic, chemical, and physical) of the principal types of hypogene ore deposits recognized in current genetic classifications, and to classify the ore deposits of the western United States into those types. The genetic divisions used and the criteria determining them are essentially those followed by Lindgren in his Mineral Deposits. Deviations from Lindgren represent either changed conceptions since 1928 (the date of the third edition of Mineral Deposits) due to advance in knowledge or the inevitable differences of opinion between experts in active fields of investigation. Though nineteen economic geologists have been given free hand in presenting their particular topics, there are no fundamental departures in the chapter from the principles set forth by Lindgren. It would be entirely beyond the capacity of a single chapter to give a comprehensive geologic description of all the ore deposits of the western United States. Descriptions of individual deposits have been restricted to those features that are of most diagnostic genetic value. All of the more important deposits receive that much attention. Deposits of lesser economic importance and those inadequately known geologically are treated more briefly or merely cited under what seems to be their proper genetic assignment. The geographic limits of the descriptive matter are the Black Hills and the United States between the Rocky Mountains and the pacific Coast. Capacity of the chapter has made it necessary to impose these geographic limits.
