The Coal Preparation Branch of the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center has developed a computer program to calculate the performance characteristics of coal washing devices. This program uses specific gravity analyses of the clean coal and refuse streams as input, and generates dependent and independent performance criteria for the washer. Partition curves are internally represented in a functional form by a Weibull function. Performance criteria generated by this computer program are compared to manually calculated performance criteria for air tables, Dynawhirlpools, Baum jigs, hydrocyclones, and dense medium cyclones. The comparisons show that the computer program gives results in close agreement with the hand- calculated values while greatly reducing the amount of time involved in performing the analyses.

DIFFERENT methods of parting gold from silver, and, on the other hand, silver from gold, were discussed in the last book; also the separation of copper from the latter and further, of lead from gold as well as from silver ; and, lastly, the methods for refining the two precious metals. Now I will speak of the methods by which silver must be separated from copper, and likewise from iron.1 The officina, or the building necessary for the purposes and use of those who separate silver from copper, is constructed in this manner. First, four long walls are built, of which the first, which is parallel with the bank of a stream, and the second, are both two hundred and sixty-four feet long. The second, however, stops at one hundred and fifty-one feet, and after, as it were, a break for a length of twenty-four feet, it continues again until it is of a length equal to the first wall. The third wall is one hundred and twenty feet long, starting at a point opposite the sixty-seventh foot of the other walls, and reaching to their one hundred and eighty-sixth foot.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi [ ] fled by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity -the hot hammer test. Samples Y2 in. in diameter and ¾ in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher tempera¬tures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. A progress report of an experimental investigation into the role of clay in reservoir performance is presented. The Paper gives some of the reasons for considering clay as a significant component and outlines the objectives of a broad field of stud) which it is intended to pursue. Descriptions of the analytical methods used are given; these include X-ray diffraction. elec tron miscroscopy, thin section petrography, infrared spec-troscopy, and cation exchange analysis. A suite of the more important clay minerals has been assembled and characterized l~y these methods for use as standards in core analysis. From the data obtained it appears that although no one method of analysis is diagnostic for all of the clay minerals the infrared technique shows considerable promise in this direction. For the present, one or more supplementary methods should be used to confirm the clay mineral identifications. The methods of analysis are applied to field cores taken from repesentative and widely differing strata especially as regards their susceptibility to damage by fresh water. well.; completed in the stevens and Gatchell zones in San Joaquin valley are I,articularly clear-cut examples of this behavior with stevens zone wells being more adversely affected by fresh water. cores from these zones have been studied and are discussed. It appears that differences in this behavior can be ascribed to differences in the nature of the contained clays. The value of the infrarecl spectra of the clay fractions in establishing the identity of the predominant clay minerals is given particular emphasis. INTRODUCTION It is a challenge to the technical resources of the petroleum industry that when the economic limit of production is reached, from 40 to 70 per cent of the oil in California reservoirs remains unproduced even by use of the best presently known methods of recovery. The magnitude of this abandoned volume of oil can be appreciated when it is considered that to 1950 in excess of 8 billion bbll has been produced from California reservoirs with estimated economically recoverable reserves in known fields and pools totaling nearly 4 billion bbl.24 If for every barrel of oil produced there is at least another barrel still in place, it is evident that the revenue obtained from the recovery of only a .few per cent of this volume would repay the cost of the required research manyfold. From well completion experience. production behavior, and a growing body of laboratory data it now appears certain that the mineral composition of a producing stratum has an important bearing on the productivity and ultimate yield. In addition to the organic component and water, the cores con,ist of gravel, sand. silt, and clay" in diverse variety of (a, composition and (b) texture. It is the composite effect of these two factors which is probably responsible in large measure for the way in which the oil flows to the well. The role of the clay and fine-size accessory minerals is not clear but there is a growing opinion, based on their physical and chemical properties, that it is a significant one. of particular importance are the prime facts: 1. The silt and clay fractions of the reservoir matrix possess the highest surface area per gram, and 2. The silt and especially the clay fractions are the most chemically reactive of the inorganic constituents present. Only within the last few years has the knowledge of clay mineralogy and the techniques of identifying the clay minerals reached such a stage as to enable reliable inquiry into the composition of argillaceous sediments.2,8,10,11,12,16,26 It is the purpox of this and succeeding papers to add to the fund of information on the role which these materials play in the production of petroleum from California formations by correlating their presence and associated properties with observed reservoir behavior. In the present paper attention is directed to their possible influence on damage by fresh water. OBJECTIVES The attack on this problem divides naturally into two broad phases: 1. Determination of the nature of the clays and their relationships to the other mineral components, and 2. Determination of the physico-chemical relationships between the clays and the interstitial fluids. In the work described in this paper the emphasis has been on phase 1, which stems logically from the necessity of identifying and understanding the materials to be dealt with in Phase 2. The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be con- ducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests.

For a long time it has been known that it is possible to deduce conclusions about the physical constitution of the interior of the earth from the records of natural earthquakes obtained by stationary seismographs. In view of this fact it is surprising how late, relatively speaking, geologic prospecting by seismic methods has been taken up, although the first suggestion was made 40 years ago- that travel-time curves of artificial explosions might be used for the study of the change of the velocity of seismic waves as depth. Further suggestions of practical applications of artificial explosions for geologic purposes were made by Belar,2 by von dem Borne,3 by Benndorf4 and by Galitzin,5 but it was not until 1919 that Mintrop obtained. a patent on the seismic prospecting method which he has applied commercially on a large scale ever since. Dr. Mintrop came to this country with his method at about 1923. Since that time, several. American oil companies have developed seismographs of the mechanical type for the vertical component similar to that of Mintrop's (Humble Oil Co., Dr. Ricker). Other consulting geophysical companies designed other types of seismic devices, the simplest of them for the recording of the first impulse being the geophone (McCollum Geophone Co.). The galvanometric recording method as first proposed by Galitzin is being used (Geophysical Research Corpn.?) and use is being made even of the piezoelectric properties of crystals for portable seismographs (F. Rieber).. There is such an enormous variety of all kinds of portable seismographs, vibrographs, accelerographs, etc., that it is difficult to decide just what kind is preferable. Unfortunately, nothing has been published as yet about American designs of portable seismographs, except the Wood Anderson torsion-seismometer. After Mintrop's design of portable seismographs, other constructions were made.

Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities. regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves ( 1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worth- less or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The first step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. THE September issue of the Engineering and Mining Journal carried an item regarding the Cercapuquio Mining Co. which was mentioned as a large producer of lead, zinc, and cadmium, situated near Huancayo, Peru. The paragraph caught my eye because I had not heard of the property in thirty years and I recollect all too well the circumstances of its accouchement. In 1916 1 was making my headquarters in the town of Huancayo, then the terminus of the Central Railway of Peru, and was examining mines and prospects in that general area for Cerro de Pasco. In the course of my work I became acquainted with an engaging and energetic "practical" miner named Balarin, a Dalmatian living in Huan¬cayo, and made numerous trips in his excellent company. One day Balarin came to the down-at-heels hostelry where I stopped and told me that a Cholo prospector, a character by the name of Jose, had just reached town and claimed to have made a discovery in a little known locality called Cercapuquio. Lead-silver, Balarin said, and showed me a sample of galena about the size of his fist. "Fine," I remarked. "When do we leave?"

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.

THE topography at the Stan Trg mine facilitated early exploration by adits; in consequence adit levels were developed at horizons 865, 795, and 760 meters above sea level, and the levels in the mine 'are named according to their elevation. Exploitation started from the 760-m. level . upwards while simultaneously first steps were taken with regard to mining in depth. A deep dewatering adit 2.5 km. long now gives access to the deposit at the 610-m. horizon which also is connected with the 760-m. adit level by a three-compartment main hoisting shaft. TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

THE iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana High-lands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Profes-sor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse.

THE first fall meeting of the new Coal Division started on time on Thursday morning, Sept. 11, at Pittsburgh, with Paul Sterling of the Anthracite Section presiding and over a hundred members and guests in the room. The attendance increased from session to session, the total registration being 248. Excellent arrangements had been made by the officers of the Division covering all features of the meeting, the only drawback being that more papers-were listed for presentation than could be discussed in the time available. Howard-N. Evensong, chairman of the Division, explained this situation as sore and sore papers case in by likening it to the case of the small boy who wanted a second niece of pie at the end of a large seal. When his mother remonstrated that if he ate any more he would certainly burst, the young man replied, "Well, you just hand over the pie and then get out of the way." With that Mr. Evensong turned the meeting over to Mr. Sterling, who handled it so well that with ample discussion it was still possible to adjourn at lunch time, all but the group of junior papers having been heard. This series of papers, the output of the .very lively Junior Section organized last spring by the younger men of the Division was regretfully put over until Friday morning, when that on "Heat Drying" by S.. M. Parsley was read.

The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselrnan Basin, Md. 3. CIVILIZATION'S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man's comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

PLANS are well matured for the joint meeting of the Coal Division and the Ohio Section of the Institute at Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 27 and 28, at which a large attendance is expected. The proceedings for a day and a half will be devoted largely to the uses of coal, the program providing for two technical sessions in the auditorium of Battelle Memorial Institute (505 King Ave.) on Friday, and various plant inspec¬tions on Saturday morning. By way of diversion on Saturday afternoon arrangements have been made for attendance en bloc at the football game between Ohio State and Northwestern, 100 seats having been reserved for the game at $2.40 each-as long as they last. An inventory of the high lights of the meeting would be incomplete without reference to the informal banquet at the Deshler-Wallick hotel on Friday evening, for which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Coal Division, is down for a talk, and Howard N. Eavenson, Vice-president of the Institute, will be the principal speaker. The program in detail is as follows:
