IN an engineering fashion we have made an assay of the engineering profession, using as a. sample the engineers listed in "Who's Who in America" (1928-1929). We are aware that some will say it is an unfair sample; that it came from the best mine. This is readily admitted, with this qualification: that all engineers and architects by virtue of their training and experience have been freed of most of the dross to which mankind is heir. They are -a selected group to begin with, having all the potentialities those in the sample possess. We are also aware that some will say a part of those included in the sample are not engineers. Our answer to that criticism is this: An engineer is no less an engineer because for the time being he is president of a bank, a university, an opera company, or a hotel company. Moreover, he is no less an engineer because he is a governor of a commonwealth, a United States senator, a member of the Cabinet, or the President of the United States.

PART I DENSITY AND ENERGY CHANGES IN COLD-WORKED COPPER IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led' to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. Similar results had previously been obtained by Farren and Taylor2 and Hort3 and more or less simultaneously with the author's work by

With the gradual depletion of the natural-gas pools of the Kansas district, together with the uncertainty of further cheap fuel developments, some of the western zinc companies turned to the coal fields, attracted by their permanency and the success of the Matthiessen & Hegeler Co. and the lllinois Zinc Co. Being then confronted with the problem of using a relatively high-priced fuel, although the ultimate supply was very great, the fuel economies of the kilns and furnaces became of far more importance, and the more modern equipments, as a result, embodied distinct gaias in this phase of the business. In addition, there have been some pronounced advances in the actual making of gas from these coals. Increased efficiency in gas making has contributed its hare to lowering costs and those plants located in the higher priced fuel districts have probably been obliged to study these economies somewhat more closely. Naturally, many beneficial changes have resulted in both practice and apparatus in these sections. On certain western coals, for instance, the actual saving in fuel consumption has been 50 per cent. By this is meant that, where about 1.75 tons were burned to smelt 1 ton of oxidized ore, 0.7 to 0.9 ton is now required. While comparisons by T. R. Ingalls1 of fuel economies in smelting in this country and Germany before the war may, in general, be correct, they do not appear to do justice to the more progressive American practice. It is doubtful whether German plants were substantially bettering these fuel ratios. Data furnished by Bender and Frams do not afford records averaging less than 0.9 ton coal per ton ore on materials from 40 per cent. to 50 per cent. zinc. Fuels As producer fuel, Illinois, Indiana, and Kansas coah offer a wide range of material, although varying much in their amenability to gasscation. IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.

The solubility of nitrogen gas in purified iron and low alloy steels is determined for the y region (930° to 1350°C). The diffusivtiy of nitrogen is estimated from the rate of approach to equilibrium. The investigation of aluminum-killed steels, held in nitrogen, discloses precipitation of aluminum nitride, the solubility of which is determined. ALTHOUGH several investigations of the solu-bility of nitrogen gas in y iron have been reported, all have made use of the method adopted by Sieverts in his classic work, whereby the solubility is determined by the pressure or volume change of the gas. The agreement between different investigators* is rather poor, particularly as compared to the self-consistency of results of several individual investigators. The present report represents a portion of our investigation of the equilibrium of nitrogen and nitrogenous atmospheres with iron and steels. The method adopted in this temperature region (910" to 1400°C) consists of holding the specimen in gaseous nitrogen, quenching (or cooling), and determining the nitrogen content by direct analysis (solution in acid followed by distillation and titra-tion of the ammonia).** Up to 1050°C a 20 in. vertical wire-wound (Kan-thal) furnace was used; this was wound in three sections so that by proper adjustment of relative currents, and use of a modulator1 and a commercial controller (using a chromel-alumel control couple), a zone almost 6 in. long could be maintained uniform within a few tenths of a degree. Since the temperature coefficient of the nitrogen solubility is low, the full precision was not utilized and a variation of l° to 2" was tolerated; a variation of a similar amount also occurred occasionally between the beginning and end of the experiment. At higher temperature a vertically mounted, tubular Globar furnace and control unit was used; the zone of uniformity (l° to 2"C) was here limited to about 2 in.; fluctuations with time were comparable to those in the wire-wound furnace. Reported temperatures were measured by use of a platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouple, which was frequently com- pared with a similar standard couple which was calibrated at the gold and palladium points and also compared with one certified by the Bureau of Standards; error from this source is believed to be less than 1 "C. Nitrogen gas from a commercial cylinder was mixed with slightly over 1 pct H by use of a gas mixer described previously.' This mixture was passed over hot copper and through ascarite and phosphorus pentoxide to remove oxygen and water vapor. The purified gas contained 1.05 pct H. THE formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write-and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore . able to present an authoritative sketch-concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from others of his personal friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb..24, 1836, at Boston, Mass., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D., an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary, education in private. schools, be studied in 1854 at the, Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. S. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. GOING west from Denver on Route 6, the direct road to Grand Junction, one gets the first glimpse of mining a few miles east of Denver near Idaho Springs where the workings of defunct gold mines are visible on the sides of mountains along the highway. One enterprising company is turning a profit by showing tourists through the mine and mill and then selling them gold samples on the way out. We have always known that mining people are ingenious, but this proves it. About five and a half hours fast driving west from Denver brings one to Rifle, Colo., which is the site of the oil shale mine, retorting plant, and refinery of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. As you drive up to the mine, you can see a portal high on the face of the cliff in front of you where the mine surface plant literally hangs by its toenails. Below, the retorting plant and refinery gleam in the sunlight. Up at the mine, Fred Wright will show you how the oil shale is extracted in two benches (a third bench would be used for commercial mining) by the room-and-pillar method. In mining the top level, an underground crew of thirteen men have been able to produce 1500 tons of shale in each eight-hour shift. To do this, the mine is thoroughly mechanized. The mining method is de- scribed in the September issue of Mining Engineering.

In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. This gives Fr as a function of the (La/L) .-.-.tortuosity ratio and porosity, or in explicit form: where: T = (La/L)&apos;, and N is the number of pores of radius, r, which will be found in any cross sectional area, x R&apos;. That is, N = R²/r². It will be clear from the foregoing considerations that the hydraulic formation fat. tor should be dependent on the value of R which in every case must be arbitrarily selected. By analogy, the hydrauiic formation factor, Fcf, characterizing the porous medium at Sw<1,will be given by: R² NT. where ke is the effective wetting liquid permeability obtaining at Sw<l, and Te is the square of the (Las/L) ratio defined by Thornton. Therefore, the hydraulic resistivity index, If, is: However, Thrnton gives I as: and it follows that: Equation 2, when checked against the data of wyckoff and Botset² and some of the Morse et al data³, gives comparisons as shown at the bottom of this page. Computations based on Leverett&apos;s data, quoted by Thorntaon, gives computed krw values somewhat lower than the experimental values. Moreover, other instances can be cited where we find that neither Equation 1 nor Equa tion 2 is checked by experimental data. The work of Botset&apos; on the Nichols Buff sandstone and Morse et a1 on oil wetted Bradford sandstone are such instances. A reason for these discrepancies may lie in the fact that if both Equations 1 and 2 are presumed always to give accurate values for krw, it follows that PC = Pd/Sw". Such an expression, it is well known, is too simple to describe accurately the capillary pressure behavior of all porous media. However, it is believed that a particular advantage resides on the use of Equation 2, since it is not dependent for its utility on a knowledge of the capillary pressures obtaining in dynamic flow svsterns. No practical technique for measuring the capillary pressures characterizing the fluid distributions in dynamic flow systems has yet been proposed. Acknowledgment is given to Dr. Paul D. The selection of a particular machine for production drilling is the most critical drill evaluation the pit engineer is called upon to make. It is a true engineering design problem requiring value judgments. Generally, the procedure follows these steps: (1) Determine and specify the conditions under which the machine will be used, including such service factors as labor, site, weather, etc. (2) State the objectives for the rock-breakage phases of the production cycle of operations--considering excavation and haulage restrictions, crushing capacity, production quota, and pit geometry-in terms of tonnage, fragmentation, throw, etc. (3) On the basis of blasting requirements, design the drill-hole pattern (hole size and depth, in- clination, burden, spacing, etc.) (4) Determine the drillability factors and select the drilling methods which appear feasible for the kind of rock anticipated. (5) Specify the operating variables for each system under study, considering drill, rod, bit and circulation fluid factors. (6) Estimate and compare performance parameters, including costs. Major cost items are bits, drill depreciation, labor, maintenance, power and fluids. (7) Select the drilling system that best satisfies all requirements with the lowest over-all cost.

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

The fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actua1 and the theorcticallY computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commcrcinlly available materials. Computatiolls have been made,,2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most importallt of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect conccrns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture, Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior com-pressive deformation, This marked ani-sotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffe, et al.3 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence, of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the ergence of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the clement of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only docs the magnitude Of the Fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles. but also its dcpendencc upon strain is affected by changes in &apos;hap&apos; an&apos; size Or the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening Of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of suficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength Of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture slrength the by virtue Of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture
