The early development patterns of both Australia and New Zealand were substantially in parallel and both were heavily indebted to gold mining for, providing the stimulus to growth. However, since the mining boom, of 1895 - 1899, the mining sector in New Zealand has progressively declined, while in Australia it has assumed an increasing importance in the economy. The continued dominance of minerals in Australian trade, and the fact that eight out of the top ten companies in Australia are directly involved in mineral exploration and production, has strongly influenced government and public attitude's to the minerals sector. Although the legal framework of mining and exploration Acts and Regulations are similar it is in, the method of administration, particularly in regard to exploration and prospecting licences, that the gulf across, the Tasman is apparent. Despite the relative ease of application and granting of licences in Australia, in the more settled south eastern part of the continent we are finding more and more land is being zoned unavailable for exploration. In the remote areas, the Aboriginals now control nearly ten per cent of the land area of Australia, virtually with drawing that portion from exploration. The concept of 'Australianisation' has softened a hardening attitude against foreign investment in mining on the part of the bureaucracy. This anti-mining attitude is fortunately, not shared by the public, and we can but hope that the will of the Australian people can filter through to our masters in Canberra, and ease the rapid increase in the number of regulatory bodies which does so much to inhibit the normal conduct of business. The delays caused by interminable hearings and committee investigations all cost money. This cost can only rebound back on the end consumer, who after all is a voter.

The health of the industrial minerals industry appears to be improving year by year. In fact, preliminary information suggests that only three commodities (asbestos, bromine, and sulfur-other) failed to show a production gain in 1984 over 1983. In 1983, 10 commodities failed to post gains and six remained constant. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1984 was $16.7 billion, up $1.4 billion from 1983. Cement, clays, gypsum, and crushed stone production increased. Since these are used in housing and construction, this suggests these industries are moving out of their recent doldrums. Barite and clay production also improved in 1984. Local US barite production, however, still has a long way to go to attain the 1981 high of 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st). Barite imports remain high. But they are not as high as the 1982 importation of 2 Mt (2.3 million st). Bentonite production in 1984 increased 20% in volume and 25% in value over the previous year. This suggests improvement in the drilling industry and an increase in demand for iron ore pelletizing grades. All in all, the industrial mineral industry is alive and well. And it shows signs of great improvement in the next few years. The Pebble deposit contains three contiguous zones. In the Pebble West zone, granodiorite stocks intrude gently warped volcanosedimentary rocks that had been intruded by diorite sills and two felsic intrusion breccias. In the Central zone, volcanosedimentary rocks are cut by diorite and granodiorite sills; the latter are genetically associated with the granodiorite stocks. In these zones, widespread potassic alteration consists of brown biotite and K-feldspar, with abundant quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein stockworks. Chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios range from 2/1 to 1/20. Diorite hosts the highest-grade mineralization, with much of it being disseminated. Patchy, later phyllic alteration is moderate and commonly depleted in copper. The Pebble East zone occupies a granodiorite stock and intruded host rocks below an eastwardly thickening wedge of barren Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks up to 600 m thick. Brown biotite alteration and copper mineralization are strong, with chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios commonly over 1/1. The zone extends to a depth of at least 1200 m below surface; some drill holes bottomed in strong mineralization. Later, weak to moderate sericitic alteration removed some chalcopyrite and locally remobilized gold. The Pebble deposit has a Measured/Indicated resource of 3 billion tonnes grading 0.28% Cu, 0.32 g/t Au and 0.015% Mo (= 0.5% copper-equivalent) and an Inferred resource of 1.13 billion tonnes grading 0.30 g/t Au, 0.27% Cu and 0.015% Mo (0.55% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone has an Inferred resource of 2.13 billion tonnes grading 0.55% Cu, 0.34 g/t Au, and 0.037% Mo (0.97% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone is open to the east and to a lesser extent to the north, south, and to depth.

In its efforts to reduce waste, and increase efficiencyin oil production, the Bureau of Mines is investigating methods of increasing the recovery from the underground sources of supply, which are the foundation of the petroleum industry and the many allied industries wholly or partly dependent on it. In the face of a demand that is increasing faster than the production and that, in the consensus of opinions of well-informed authorities, is soon likely to outstrip the productive capacity, it is well to consider whether it is not possible to extract more oil from the known sources of supply. It is universally acknowledged that by the usual production methods much oil is left underground, the general opinion being that at least 50 per cent of the oil in a field remains unrecovered when the field is abandoned as exhausted. From the writer's own investigations he believes the average recovery is even less, and if any considerable portion of this oil being left underground could he made available it would have a tremendously favorable influence on the petroleum industry and all the industries dependent on it. In this publication are considered the principles involved in increasing recovery and methods of extracting more oil from the oilbearing formations than by the usual ways of producing. These methods are: The use of gas or vacuum pumps, forcing compressed air or gas through the oil-bearing formations, displacing the oil by water, and better utilization of the natural pressures in the oilhearing formations. Especial attention is being given to a processcommonly known as the Smith-Dunn-for forcing compressed air through oil-bearing formations because it is believed to hold most promise for the future.

A design for a laser-powered optical interferometer, using a specimen whose thermal expansion is to be measured as part of the optical system, was conceived and applied in a prototype dilatometer. The object of thin work was the development of an absolute dilatometer capable of use at elevated temperature, particularly above 1,000° C. The prototype has been operated at temperatures exceeding 1,510° C. Results obtained with this device agree within 2.5 percent with the published data for the coefficient of expansion of columbium.

The use of piled raft foundations for tall buildings has been increasing in this decade as it is an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations. Piled rafts are composite structures comprised of the piles, raft and soil and so soil-structure interaction is important in computing the behaviour of the foundation. In this paper, the behaviour of piled rafts subjected to non-uniform loadings will be examined where the raft is supported by piles of different lengths. Finite layer techniques are used for the analysis of the horizontally layered soils and finite element techniques are used for the analysis of the raft and piles. This method accounts for the soil-structure interaction and the lateral resistance of the soil on the piles and raft. Results provided from the present method are compared with the results of a full 3D finite element analysis.

Data from seven instrumented pile load tests in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and two other instrumented load tests reported in the literature, one in Evanston, Illinois and one in Houston, Texas were reviewed. The data were for pipe piles having diameters from 9-5/8 inches to 18 inches, driven to depths between 36 and 96 feet. These data were used to develop a relationship between effective vertical stress and unit side friction and unit end bearing. These relationships were based on readily measured soil parameters, undrained shear strength, Cu, and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values. This Beta (ß) and Nt approach and four other methods were then used to calculate the bearing capacity of the nine cases analyzed. The results from each of the methods are compared with the measured results.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944. In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

This report summarizes the results of the Narragansett Win Projec't's activities during the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) Phase 1, which was transitional from and which followed the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase which initiated the investigation of New England's potential roil resource. The 960 sq. mile basin is structural and topographic lowland containing 12,000 to 20,000 ft. of terrigenous clastic sediments of late Pennsylvanian age, and which rests on an upper Precambrian and Cambrian basement. The Rhode Island Formation, which is the coal-bearing unit, comprising the bulk of the Pennsylvanian rocks consists, in order of decreasing abundance, of sandstone, conglomerate, silts tone, shale, and coal. In the NSF Phase, 24 drill-holes yielded 17,900 ft, of core; in the BOM Phase I study, 4 drillholes yielded 2,100 ft. of core. Anthracite and semi-anthracite was encountered in beds Up to 30 ft. thick in widely spaced parts of the Basin. The coal, typically very low in sulfur, and a high ash anthracite, won mined in substantial volumes from 1808 to 1959 from shaft and open lit in Portsmouth and Cranston, R.I., and in lesser volumes in Mansfield, Mass. Currently coal is now being mined in Plainville, Mass. as a fuel in the manufacturing of light-weight aggregate from the same quarry that serves as the source of the rock being processed. The structurally complex Narragansett Basin is now known to have a greater extent than earlier since recent drilling by others (Chapter 2) has confirmed our interpretation that the Basin extended offshore south A Boston. The, Basin also extends into Rhode Island Sound to the south. The geological structure is more complex in the southern part of the Basin than in the northern part. Three episodes of folding have been documented on Aquidneck Island and four episodes of faulting have been demonstrated for the Basin as a whole. Relatively less well exposed rock in the northern part of the Basin, increases the difficulty of recognizing and correlating structural episodes in the northern part of the Basin. The Basin his hewn subdivided into six structural domains which appear to have distinctive structural, metamorphic, paleontological and sedimentological differences that mw assist in isolating important events in the evolution of the Basin and its component parts. The tentative structural model recently developed in POP Phase I has important implications for exploration and mining. In the first and second folding stages the coal is mobilized and thickened in the crests and troughs of folds whose axes are horizontal to subhorizontal. While conventional coal exploration and mining methods are not applicable, great thickening in the crests and troughs of large scale structures, which can he defined by geology, geophysics and drilling, may provide compensating advantages. Bedrock over most of the Basin is 0-50 ft., but thicknesses of glacial deposits up to 150 ft. are present locally. Pro-Pleistocene topographic trends are controlled by structure and rock hardness; Pleistocene deposits aligned to the S. F. are superimposed on earlier trends. The southern part of the Basin is mainly dominated by high grade Barrovian metamorphism and plutonism of Permian age, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny. About 300 sq. miles of the 960 sq. mile Basin has been affected. The remaining 660 sq. miles, in the chlorite and subchlorite zones of metamorphism are compatible with the presence of high quality anthracite and semi-anthracite. Illite crystallinity studies begun in the NSF Phase, have been carried out in the BOM Phase l with important results. About ME of the northern Basin is now known to be in the diagenetic (unmetamorphosed) or subchlorite zone and the remainder in the chlorite zone of metamorphism. Mite studies, probably best recording temperature effects, show a generally progressive increase from the NW corner of the Basin near Plainville, Mass. toward the south and southeast. Reflectivity and coal petrography studies, probably best recording pressure and effects related to shearing, indicate a generally opposite pattern. Thus these methods provide powerful tools for the ultimate solution of problems important to coal exploration for coals of higher combustible volatile content and exploitation of these. Due to the complex nature of the coal, chemical data may not he easily used to determine rank. The coals have been tectonically deformed and mineralized. This deformation plus thermal metamorphism have altered the coals, in some cases by producing natural coke. Brecciated coal is often coated with a secondary depositional carbon. The coals' hydroscopic nature and high ash contents are due to the deformed nature of the coal and the presence of this secondary carbon. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the coal-bearing Rhode Island Formation is similar to described alluvial fan deposits. The non-geological studies al-low three conclusions to be made: 1. A substantial number of areas have been identified in the Narragansett Basin in which mining could be carried out without undue difficulty from a land use point of view. 2. Substantially more than two hundred instances of past or current- mining activities have been identified in the Basin. Many of those are in areas defined as geologically interesting, and may be advantageous From the point of view of future exploration. 3. The map synthesis technique developed for this contract is successful and may easily be adapted to future exploration in its current form and also in its expandable form dealing with unit measurements of one-tenth mile. We recommend that BOM Phase 2 exploration should accomplish the intent of the Congressional language in House Report No. 95-1251, to continue a substantial drilling and geophysics program: "The Committee expects the Bureau to continue studies involved in ascertaining the extent and quality of low sulfur coal reserves in the Narragansett Basin in New England including necessary drilling and geophysical studies. The knowledge of the extent of such deposits is of great importance to this 'energy pour' area".

Considerable borehole investigation work has been completed at a proposed site at Sellafield in Cumbria, supplemented by seismic surveys, other geophysical sensing and geological mapping. The focussing of investigation on the rock mass itself will be achieved by means of the planned underground rock characterisation facility, giving access to depths of about 800 m in the strong, low-permeability basement rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. Characterisation work undertaken during the sinking phase and interaction with continuing surface-based exploration and monitoring should permit a firmer assessment of the long-term safety of a repository. Key considerations in the choice of a design for the repository include the waste handling method, underground inlet cell, underground vaults, vault environment and environmental effects

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. "‘Gas hydrate’ is the common term for a solid material formed from the combination of various gases as ‘guest’ and water as ‘host’. A series of large-scale scientific drilling and coring programmes conducted since 2000 revealed that natural gas hydrate exists in a wide variety of accumulations in the sediments. The scaled-up onshore and offshore field production tests during the last decade show that gas production technology will be realized to make gas production from gas hydrates viable in the future, recognizing its potentials as one of the future sustainable energy resources.The total produced gas was approximately 470 m3 by the hot water circulation method over 6 days of operation in the permafrost-associated Mallik 2002 project in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada. In the Mallik 2007-2008 project, the gas was successfully produced stably by the depressurization method for 6 days, up to 13,000 m3 cumulatively. The depressurization method applied in the Mallik test was shown to be an effective way to produce gas from gas hydrates. The Alaska field trial to inject mixed gas of CO2 and N2 to exchange CH4 in 2012 was successfully done for the first time to produce maximum 1,270 m3 per day. A remarkable achievement was made by Japan when it completed its first offshore production test in the Eastern Nankai Trough, producing approximately 120,000 m3 of methane by the depressurization method over 6 days in March 2013. The technical challenges and scientific uncertainties obtained from Nankai Trough production test provide Korea with more considerations as to the aspects of well completion, reservoir formation and seafloor stability, sand control, flow assurance, environmental monitoring, and etc., due to the different geological setting and geomechanical properties of the Ulleung Basin in Korea."

Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is con¬ducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a substrate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

The survival chances of trapped miners in underground mines depend on how quickly they can be located and rescued post-accident. During entrapments, emergency rescue is highly desired but can be hindered by the lack of positioning information when a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system is not available. Various types of missing-person locator systems are available to aid search-and-rescue operations. From the wide range of the available systems, selecting the most suitable one becomes the next challenge. The available systems have not been measured if they are fit-for-purpose or not, and to what situation. This study proposes user requirements that can be used as a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. These user requirements provide a framework for the design and development of a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system. The user requirements can also be used for evaluating the performances of a particular system, predict its success, and also drive future research toward developing new technology to enhance the capabilities of the current systems.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the U.S. mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the research literature is timely. This paper aims to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a technology readiness assessment (TRA) to research literature identified by systematic search methods. Results indicate that much of the evidence for CXS performance is at lower levels of maturity: that is, components and prototypes tested in a laboratory and in relevant environments. Less evidence exists for CXS performance at higher levels of maturity — that is, systems evaluated within operational environments — despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for more peer-reviewed research to evaluate CXS technologies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions, which contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate most are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions, such as traveling through a berm. Lastly, the relatively small number and segmented nature of relevant studies suggest there is a need for more incremental research that would better facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies. This progression could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

Because shape is an assessment of the three-dimensional form of a particle, it may be described in terms of sphericity (?), which is a measure of how closely a particle approaches a spherical configuration. In this study, Darcy?s law and the Kozeny-Carman model for fluid flow through porous media were applied to packed beds to determine the sphericity (?) of apatite particles. The beds were composed of glass spheres or particles of apatite (igneous from Brazil and sedimentary from the United States) of three classes of size (Class 1: -297 +210 µm; Class 2: -210 +149 µm; Class 3: -149 +105 µm). Glass spheres were used to validate the model because of its known sphericity (? = 1.00). Apatite particles, either igneous or sedimentary, showed very close values for particle sphericity (? ? 0.6). Observations on particle images conducted by scanning electron microscopy illustrated that igneous (? = 0.623) and sedimentary (? = 0.644) particles of apatite of Class 2 predominantly exhibit elongated shape. The close value of particle sphericity (? ? 0.6) showed by either igneous or sedimentary apatite may be justified by the similarity in particle shape.
