"Phase separation is a frequently occurring phenomenon during solidification accompanied by melt convection, sedimentation or, in the case of two unmixable liquids, a Marangoni driven motion. In order to describe these phase separation phenomena a two-phase volume-averaging model was employed for globular equiaxed solidification of binary alloys and decomposition and solidification of hypermonotectic alloys. The model considers nucleation and growth of equiaxed grains or second phase droplets, motion and sedimentation of grains or droplets, feeding flow and solute transport by diffusion and convection. It allows the prediction of macro segregations and the distributions of grain size or droplet size. Evaluations were made by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental results. For example it is shown that the numerically predicted grain size distribution in a plate casting (Al-4wt%Cu) agrees reasonably well with the experimental analyses.IntroductionModeling of metallurgical processes is a rapidly expanding field and the research activities in the last decades cover a wide range of areas including melt pre-treatment, solidification and subsequent manufacturing routes. Among those activities solidification stands in the central position, because the primary structure of the materials, and even many defects such as porosity, (macro or micro) segregation and inclusions form during solidification. Those primarily formed structures or defects once existing are difficult to be removed or modified by the subsequent material processing.Solidification is a multi-disciplinary field involving thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and solid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and other disciplinesr1 -31• One of the most challenging problems in solidification modeling is the complex interactions between physical phenomena occurring on different length scales ranging from atomic rearrangement over single crystal-melt interactions to heat extraction, momentum and species transport at the system level. Modeling an industry process on atomic scale is umealistic, even on grain scale (e.g. phase field method) it would need another 40 years to be able to model the exact grain morphology in a casting space envelope of 10x10x10 cm3 [ 4]. Therefore, the realistic models for industry process are based on the solution of the macro transport equations (mass, momentum, enthalpy and species) on system scale. The microscopic phenomena such as thermodynamics, nucleation law, crystal growth kinetics and interactions at the liquid-solid interface are considered with simplified models, which are coupled with the macroscopic transport equations."

Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

"Les réultats obtenus dans les sols sur quatorze aires d'essai et six cheminements régionaux dans I'A bitibi-Témiscamingue indiquent clairement qu'il existe des variations régionales importantes dans les teneurs en éléments traces de l'horizon A1 formé sur l’épais recouvrement glacio-lacustre de cette région. Les anomalies obtenues correspondent à celles qui ont été décelées lors de précédents levés des eaux souterraines et du till de base.Selon les critères d'évaluation utilisés, treize des quatorze aires d'essai ressortent comme anomales dans Ie contexte abitibien; dix de celles-ci sont tres anomales. Ceci suggère fortement qu'un levé régional de sols, fondé sur une approche multi-éléments, identifierait entre 70 et 90 % des cibles géochimiques reconnues par des échantillonnages en profondeur. Les résultats d'un échantillonnage systématique effectué sur une région de 1000km2 viennent aussi appuyer cette hypothèse. Conséquemment, les sols formes sur les sédiments glacio-lacustres sont un médium très utile pour inventorier de grandes regions recouvertes par ce typ e de sédiments.L 'horizon A1 est Ie plus utile pour ce type de levé parce qu'i1 est facil e d échantillonner, qu 'it assure une plus grande constance du typ e de matériel échantillonne et qu'il contient des teneurs accrues.De multiples mécanismes de dispersion géochimique ont joué des rôles d 'importance variable pendant et après la mise en place des sédiments glacio-Iacustres. Les plus importants sont la pression hydrostatique, la diffusion chimique et électrochimique ainsi que la bio-accumulation. The total capacity of the natural-gasoline industry to produce light hydrocarbon products increased to 21,322,000 gallons ( 507,670 barrels ) daily on January 1 , 1948 , from 17,928,000 gallons ( 426,860 barrels ) daily on January 1 , 1946. Expansion of the industry in the first two post -war years , 1946 end 1947 , thus averaged 9 percent annually , compared with 6 percent annually in the last two war years , 1944 and 1945 . The number of cycle plants increased only from 37 to 39 in the years 1946 and 1947 , and total capacity of these plants gained 21 percent to 5,857,000 gallons de ily on January 1 , 1948 , represent ing 27.5 percent of the total capacity of the industry , compared with 27.0 percent on January 1 , 1946. All other plants decreased in number in the two-year period from 589 to 510 on January 1 , 1948 , but their total daily capacity increased 18 percent to 15,465,000 gallons . The daily capacity of the average plant in the industry was enlarged from 28,600 gallons on January 1 , 1946 , to 38,800 gallons on January 1 , 1948 , continuing the long -established trend to producing units of greater size and efficiency . The average cycle plant capacity increased from 131,000 gallons daily to 150,200 gallons daily on the same dates as the average capacity of all other natural -gasoline plants increased from 22,200 gallons to 30,300 gallons . Owing to the elimination of small , obsolescent plants in Illinois , Oklahoma , and Pennsylvania , these States experienced the greatest reductions in numbers of plants in 1946 and 1947. In Oklahoma and Texas , several consolidations of two or more plants into a single operating unit were reported . Louisiana and Mississippi were the only States in which the number of plants increased , but daily capacity to produce light products was larger in eleven States on January 1 , 1948, than two years earlier . Added facilities in California and Texas accounted for 41 and 36 percent , respectively, of the national gain in capacity .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese in the western United States, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined. and obtained samples of ore from two properties in the vicinity of Barstow, San Bernardino County, Calif. In addition to these, samples from two other properties in the same vicinity were submitted by the owners. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration by ore dressing. The Big Reef manganese claims axe about 140 miles east of Barstow, Calif. The claims were leased by W., E. Thurber of San Gabriel, Calif., from the owner, C. S. VanDoren of Daggett., Calif. Manganese oxides occur as a replacement deposit in heavily brecciated andesite along a fault plane. Four samples were taken by an examining engineer of the Bureau of Mines from the ore zone, which, when composited, were representative of all the exposed ore. Preliminary tests were made on lot B, and final tests wore made on the composite sample. The Trans-Oceanic property is about 20 miles southeast of Barstow, near Newberry, in the. Pisgah mining district, Calif. The sample, submitted by the owners, was taken from a 1,000-ton reject clump from a hand-sorting operation. The ore occurs as a replacement of rhyolite.

Tensile tests were conducted on pure magnesium and on four commercial alloys over a variety of temperatures and strain rates. The high positive slope of the ductility vs testing temperature curves that is found over a short range of testing temperatures for these materaturerials was shown to result from the fact that the microstructure was not stable at these testing temperatures. Pure magnesium did not display a transition temperature, although its sub-room temperature ductility was low. This poor ductility resulted from a grain boundary weakness. The aluminum-bearing commercial magnesium alloys had a higher ductility than the pure magnesium. ness.Thealuminum-bearingcommercialThese alloys did exhibit a transition temperature and grain boundaries that were stronger than the grain material. Both pure magnesium and the commercial alloys began initiating cracks at strains equal to one half of their fracture strain. MAGNESIUM base alloys' enormous potential as structural materials lies in their high strength to weight ratios. At present, the high strength magnesium base alloys such as AZ-80, which will be discussed later, have about as high a tensile strength to specific gravity ratio as the highest strength wrought aluminum alloy, 75s-T6, and, of course, a much higher strength to weight ratio than structural steel. Further, since the magnesium base alloys develop their high strength to weight ratios with moderate strengths and extremely light weights, the ratio of load carrying capacity to the weight of many structures is relatively higher for the magnesium base alloys than their strength to weight ratios would indicate. This results because judicious increases in section size, such as increasing the depth of bending members or adding reinforcing ribs, can frequently increase the weight of a structure linearly while the strength and stiffness increase as the second or third power of the added weight. Strength and rigidity must be designed into lightweight structures by those techniques which establish multiaxial stress states. Consequently, strong, lightweight structures frequently also possess a greater propensity toward brittle failures. In order to insure against these catastrophic failures, an extra premium must be placed on ductility and toughness in light alloys. Current knowledge of the ductility and toughness behaviors—notched behaviors—of magnesium base alloys is limited.* Most of the magnesium base alloys * The state of present knowledge regarding the effect of testing temperature on mechanical properties has recently been summar-ized by Pritchard.' crystallize in the hexagonal system, so that they are expected to exhibit a tough and ductile to brittle transition temperature. Actually, a transition temperature behavior has been reported for commercially pure magnesium in the literature, but the characteristics of this transition temperatureh uggest that it may not be a transition in the usual meaning, but simply the onset of some thermal softening, a performance much like that which face-centered-cubic lead might exhibit slightly below room temperature. If transition temperatures do exist, such important questions as the manner in which they are affected by internal variables such as chemical composition and grain size, or the effect of external variables such as rate of straining or notch severity have never been investigated. The investigation reported upon herein was undertaken in order to define some of the mechanical behaviors of the magnesium base alloys better, to gain a better understanding of the influence of some of the above listed variables, and particularly to understand their effect on ductility and toughness better. Inclusions formed in a high-carbon, manganese-silicon killed plain steel (Fe-0.77C wt%) were studied. Various techniques were used to characterise the inclusions, and the latter were classified according to their chemical composition, size and morphology. The main constituent elements entering the inclusions were Mn, S, Al, and oxygen. Alongside MnS and some Al2O3 inclusions many non-metallic inclusions appeared in complex forms, consisting of silicates, sulphides and oxides. Duplex oxy-sulphides, mainly MnS combined with Al2O3, or SiO2 were the most common complex multiphase inclusions in this steel. The nanoindentation technique was used to assess and rate different types of inclusions and data of the hardness and elastic modulus of individual inclusions at room temperature are presented.

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

The public is asking for more aesthetic designs if they can be proven cost-effective at providing an appealing element to new dams. Lake Lenexa was designed and built around the idea of providing for basic dam functions such as flood control, enhanced water quality, recreation but also to provide an inviting community focal point for the residents to visit and enjoy; truly interact with the dam. The architecturally unique dam and ?one of a kind? spillway were designed to symbolize the water cycle as water moves from nature into the urban environment and the back to nature. A pedestrian bridge that spans the spillway offers visitors a good view of cascading pools and a fountain. The original Lake Lenexa dam layout incorporated relatively high, cast-in-place concrete retaining walls to form the spillway structure. The Black & Veatch project team performed a Value Engineering (VE) study to determine cost-effective means for implementing architectural features within the spillway, which resulted in innovative uses of construction materials not typically used in dam and reservoir construction. The VE study concluded that mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls that are normally used for transportation projects would be a cost-effective alternative to the originally planned cast-in-place wall systems for the main spillway and stilling basins. The Black & Veatch study added value by mixing cement-kiln dust (CKD) with on-site clay soils to produce a stabilized material for use under the spillway. The CKD stabilized material properties include low compressibility, high strength and low permeability, which reduced seepage and uplift pressures under the spillway slabs. The cost savings provided by the VE alternatives reduced total costs and enabled architectural elements. The award winning dam design also used drilled caissons, expanded polystyrene (EPS) block forms, customized steel forms and external concrete vibrators to build the pedestrian bridge and upper spillway structures.

Studies were carried out to examine the effect of introducing varying levels of a pisolitic limonite (Yandi) into an Australian iron ore blend. Compared with other ores in the blend Yandi is more porous. This structure is found to have a considerable effect on the sintering behaviour of the blends. Pilot-scale sintering studies and plant trials showed that sinter plant productivity, sinter reducibility and the low-temperature reduction degradation index altered significantly when the level of Yandi in the ore blend exceeded 15 wt%. The improvement in the reducibility is thought to be a direct result of increased porosity in the sinter and the presence of highly reducible pseudo-relict haematite. Plant trials have also shown that operational changes could be made to the sinter plant to avoid potential deterioration of productivity

These extracts are sufficient for the purpose of emphasizing the practical difficulties of averaging iron-mining conditions so as to make general vital statistics concerning iron miners useful Tor scientific. purposes. It is self-evident that conclusions based upon iron miners, so called, working largely above ground and employed chiefly in open-cut blasting ~perations or the management of steam shovels, etc., can not be made to apply to miners working continuously underground with an exposure of dust and other conditions quite similar to underground mining methods in the extraction of gold, silver, copper, lead, and other ores. The so-called "milling" process as practiced on the Mesabi Range may here be referred to, the same being explained in the report of the Immigration Commission to consist "in the sinking of a shaft on the edge of the ore body from which a tunnel is run in under the ore and connected with a vertical, funnel-shaped hole from under the surface, through which the ore is 'milled' down into the tramcars placed under the opening under the tunnel. After being loaded at the bottom of the funnelshaped hole, the cars are run out to the bottom 0.£ the shaft. where the ore is dumped into skids or elevators and raised to the ~urface and unloaded into the tipple, where it is loaded into thecal'S ready for shipment." It is properly pointed out that the so-called " milling" process employs some of the features of both the open-pit and underground methods of mining. For these and many other reasons it is self-evident that general statistics concerning iron mining are quite likely to be inconclusive and possibly seriously misleading. Aside from the foregoing the problem is seriously complicated by the extensive employment of foreign labor in the iron-mining ind ustries of the Lake Superior districts and of Negro labor in iron mining in Alabama. Within recent years, according to the report of the Immigration Commission, a considerable displacement has occurred in t~e quality of labor employed in iron mining, the displacement bemg referred to as "progressive," in that one race or group of races has entered the region and taken up the work offered in the lower occupations, the race or races already holdinz such positions having. moved up in the scale of occupation leaving the field to the newcomers. This statement is quite suggestive in that it indicates a comparatively short average trade life or trade exposure, quite at variance with the relatively long average ascer- MINES, QUARRIES, ORE REDUCTION, AND SMELTING. 377 tained for the iron mines of New <Tersey. It is said in the report of the Immigration Commission that- The Scandinavians and the other northern European races have given way to the Finns and Slovenians, and in the open-pit mines the Finns and Slovenians have given way to the south Italian, Montenegrins, Croatins, and other southern European races. In the underground mines the common labor and mining is chiefly done bv Finns and Slovenians because the races from the southern countries can not stand the heavy physical work required in this kind of mining. Here, too, is found the same upward movement, for formerly the English (Cornishmen) and Scandinavians' were in the lower occupations in the underground properties, At present the south Italians, Serbians, Montenegrins, and Croatians are performing the most menial work and are the races who are now at the foot of the scale of occupations. It is a matter of conjecture on the ranges as to who will push these races up or whether they will remain the commou laborers of the region. Inquiry was made into the prevalence of diseases OIl the ranges, but more with reference to outside sanitary conditions than to occupational exposure. The most common diseases on the ranges, however, were ascertained to be pulmonary tuberculosis and typhoid fever, and to a lesser extent smallpox and venereal diseases. With -cgard to pulmonary tuberculosis it is said that the disease is most Eevalent among the Finns and the Swedes, and is chiefly imported, I'here is no reference to a possible connection between disease occur- ~ence and occupational conditions, above or below ground, but there .s no evidence that this aspect of the iron-mining industry was made .he subject of a special investigation.

Electrical impedance tomographic methods have been applied to a variety of mineral and chemical processes in the laboratory and on plant. This review paper surveys technical developments in measurement methods to enable quantitative extraction of key process information in the form of mapping of concentration profiles, mixture homogeneity and suspension velocity. The methods for determining velocity are summarized, since this is of especial interest when applied to opaque systems where most conventional optically based measurements fail. A recent significant development is the use of ultra-high speed measurement that now allows velocity vectors to be extracted for fast moving mixtures and fluids (up to several metres per second). New data are reported pertinent to low and high solids concentration flow in pipelines. Use of the methods offer improvements to design of such systems but also points to the use of tomographic electrical sensor as online flow measurement and fault detection. This offers new opportunities for applications and benefits in the design and monitoring of mineral slurries and sludges.

Hudson River Pier 86, home of the historic USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier and the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, is currently undergoing a $30M reconstruction. This project involves the demolition of the old timber pile supported pier and construction of a new 150 ft wide by 782 ft long concrete pier, built over the footprint of the old piles. The new pier consists of steel pipe piles, precast concrete pile caps, and a composite deck, made up of precast, prestressed concrete planks and cast-in-place concrete topping. This paper focuses on both the structural design and construction of the new pier, with emphasis on the pile foundation. Pier 86 is unique in that it is required to resist the extremely high lateral loads imposed on it by the permanently moored 898 ft long aircraft carrier during severe storms. A total of 360 steel pipe piles support the new pier. These piles, which are 24 in. in diameter and range in length from 58 ft to 175 ft, were driven down to bedrock. The piles, each having 200 ton allowable capacities, work together to resist the significantly large lateral loads exerted on the pier by the ship. The installation of the piles was unique in that all the piles, including the ?super-longs?, were fabricated to-length offsite, delivered to the site via truck and barge, and installed in one piece, eliminating the need for field splicing. The Pier 86 reconstruction will be completed within an extremely aggressive 18 month schedule, from January 2007 through June 2008. The refurbished aircraft carrier Intrepid will return home in September 2008, and the grand re-opening of the pier will be on Veteran?s Day 2008. This paper provides a case history for owners, government agencies, engineers, and construction professionals that will be faced with the challenges of designing and building new piers.

THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor&apos;s duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...

GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world&apos;s gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. Long term stability of the pillars that have been remained after R&P extraction causes postponed subsidence. To prevent unforeseen subsidence and to diminish postponed subsidence 25-50% new method for its control has been developed by the author. It supposes to use drilling and blasting technology and other original approaches. New method has been fulfilled through the holes being drilled from the surface or from the active underground openings. Explosives had been charged into the holes and were blasted. This had increased bulking factor dramatically and prevented natural caving of the strata. Physical scale modeling corroborated efficiency of the new approach. The bulking factor has grown from 0.0623 to 0.1185 and surface subsidence has been diminished from 1.1 m to 0.2 m or 5.5 times.

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with tie intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

This paper is the third of a series of three on placer mining in the western United States. The first paper4 discusses the history of placer mining in the Western States and the production of placer gold, geology of placer deposits, location of placer claims on public lands, sampling and estimation of gold placers, and classification of placer-mining methods, together with hand-shoveling and ground-sluicing. The second papers deals with hydraulicking, sluice boxes and riffles, recovery of gold and platinum from placer concentrates, treatment of amalgam, and marketing of placer gold. The discussion of sluice boxes and subsequent subjects in the second paper applies to all forms of placer mining. The present paper treats of dredging and other forms of mechanical handling of placer gravels, and drift mining.
