Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

Fragmentation by blasting is a critical process in hard rock mining. The blasting process and outcomes are highly influenced by rock mass properties and their response to higher stresses and loading rates. Each rock mass is unique, but some features affect the blast energy similarly, leading to similar outcomes. Having analyzed these features and their influence on blast results, they can be incorporated into the blast design to achieve better outcomes. This paper presents a numerical model validated by a case study from the actual mine blasts that studied the effect of rock mass properties on explosive energy production, attenuations, and overall blast outcomes. The results show that when the model parameters are calibrated based on real data, they can be used to simulate the fragmentation process and therefore be used to aid blast design.

To maintain flexibility and ductility of tunnels crossing active faults, various mitigation measures are being utilized depending on fault offset movements and seismic design criteria. Examples of those approaches are simple bell and spigot joint, articulated joint, and complex deformable longitudinal bolt and spring joint system with seismic isolation washer. This paper presents a summary of tunnel fault crossing mitigation approaches and design considerations using previous relevant experiences in California as well as case histories from Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Greece, and Italy found in literatures. Comparisons are made between large and small diameter tunnels, transportation, and utility tunnels, as well as bored, mined and cut-and-cover tunnels. Recent innovations, such as Japanese and Italian techniques, for tunnels crossing active faults are also discussed.

The detection, recovery and disposal of commercial explosives and explosive waste has always carried a level of risk and requires specialized equipment and technical expertise. Improperly stored, discarded, deteriorated, misfired, stolen or surplus products are often the primary sources of explosives that require safe disposal. Detection and disposal tools available today have advanced significantly due to developments in Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) operations and commercial blasting technology. These technologies have provided safer more efficient ways to detect, investigate and dispose of commercial explosives products in order to minimize property damage and potential harm to disposal personnel and the general public.

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

ASARCO LLC (Asarco) Hayden Copper smelter, in Hayden, Arizona, has operated continuously (except for minor labor and economic curtailments) since 1912. The current plant configuration comprises INCO flash smelting, Peirce Smith (P-S) converting and fire refining/anode casting. In order to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for sulfur dioxide promulgated in June 2010, the Hayden smelter had to increase overall sulfur fixation from approximately 95 % to 99+ %, requiring a retrofit of the existing converter department and upgrade of associated emissions controls systems. The Converter Retrofit Project (CRP) involved replacing the five existing 13’ diameter Peirce-Smith converters (2 blowing, 2 hot standby) with three new 15’ diameter Peirce- Smith converters (1 blowing, 1 hot standby) to allow for more effective process gas capture using the existing acid plant contact section. Significant upgrades were made to the acid plant wet gas cleaning section and converter primary gas handling system to improve capture performance, reliability, and sludge handling. In addition, a new tertiary gas capture system was installed to further minimize fugitive emissions from the converter aisle. The existing furnace tapping ventilation ESP was replaced with a new baghouse to enable at least 50% SO2 removal using high-surface-area dry lime injection, which was also implemented on the existing converter secondary gas baghouse system. The first two converters and all gas handling system improvements were started up in April 2018, and the third converter was brought online in November 2018. This paper presents the regulatory context; genesis and rationale for CRP; detailed description of the project; challenges during commissioning; system improvements implemented, and design considerations made, and systems performance and process optimization achieved since startup.

Consumption of plastics has been growing in both the U.S. and world markets since the mid-1930s. This growth is due to plastics being used to make new products and as a replacement material for existing products. This paper develops an understanding of the replacement process by looking at the use of plastic, specifically PVC, in the construction pipe industry. History details the growth of the plastics industry and a discussion of the material selection process indicates the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipe. Analysis shows that the use of plastic, as an alternative material for pipe, is having a significant effect on the cast iron, copper, clay, and steel industries. For the purpose of understanding the replacement process, three example residential systems were examined with a lifecycle cost analysis being performed. PVC was the material of choice in 1988 for all systems. Even though disposal cost was the one area where PVC was not the most cost effective, disposal costs were not sufficient to offset the overall advantage of using PVC on an economic basis. That plastic competes effectively with other materials, in terms of material properties and cost, indicates that further work should be performed to understand the impact plastics have on other material markets.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

Mercury, or quicksilver as it is often called, has many applications in modern technology. Used principally in electrical apparatus, industrial contol instruments, insecticides and fungicides, electrolytic preparation of chlorine and caustic soda, chemical processes, pharmaceuticals, and dental preparations, the liquid metal has unusual properties that make it a preferred material for many industrial uses. United States consumption of mercury during the past 40 years shows a rising trend. In all except 4 years, U.S. production has been less than the domestic requirement, and imports, principally from Spain, Italy, and Mexico, have supplied most of the deficit. After World War II, domestic output decreased rapidly until 1950, when it was the lowest in the 100 years covered by production records. Higher mercury prices since 1950 have reversed the decline in domestic output and reduced the gap between U.S. production and consumption. Domestic output in 1958 was the highest in peacetime since 1883; however, the nation still imported 28 percent of its mercury requirements from 1950 to 1960 the price of mercury was high as a result of industrial applications of the mercury cell, the impact of the cold war and the Korean war, and the Government stockpiling program. The stockpiling program, in effect, put a floor under mercury prices even though only 9,428 flasks of domestic mercury went into the stockpile under the original program which ran from July 1954 to December 31, 1957. Under an extension of the program, an additional 17,463 flasks was purchased.

"Observation of the use of trailing cables in ""mines shows that the chief limiting factor in the life of the cables and their safe use is the smashing or crushing of the cables in service, together with the effects of consequent splicing.Trailing cables are crushed when run over by cars, mining machines; and locomotives or when hit by falls of roof. Crushing damages the insulation and may cause failure at once or in later use. Failure may be either by short circuit between the conductors or by grounding to the track. The failure of a live cable causes electric arcs capable of igniting explosive mixtures of methane and air. Every cable failure in a gassy or dusty mine is, therefore, a real or potential hazard.Some mine operators do not allow the splicing of trailing cables for use in gassy mines, bet require that a damaged cable be immediately replaced and if repaired that it be used only in nongassy mines. Other operators allow the making of temporary splices to permit completion of the shift but require that such splices be remade and vulcanized before the cable is used again.Still other operators allow the continued use of temporary splices, which in general means that a cable is used until the splices give trouble in reeling, or overheat, or pull apart. Then the spliced sections are either cut out or the whole cable is replaced.Splices often determine the useful life of a cable. A splice poorly made may pull apart ueder mechanical strain and cause arcing that burn* the surrounding cable or ignites as or coal-dust. If it has lower conductivity a splice is the first part of the cable to heat; it may become so hot under load that it will burn apart and damage other parts of the cable, or, if it be a soldered splice, the solder may melt and allow parting of the cable. A poorly made splice often has insufficient insulation which may alloy short-circuiting between conductors or permit external contacts capable of giving an electric shock to one handling the cable. The splice is sometimes bulky from too much insulation and takes up too much room on the reel, causing uneven reeling; also by catching on the spooling device the oversized splice may receive expressive pulls and wear. Splicing is therefore a very important factor in the use of trailing cables."

The authors review the literature and discuss the application of methods to the design of thickeners for ilocculated metallurgical pulps. The use and evaluation of flocculents is described. Experimental data show that design based upon laboratory settlingdata is acceptable. The economic aspect of design is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years there has been little change in the methods for the design of thickener installations. While modifications have been made in the method of applying the data all methods have been based on the observee settling rate of the solids. The development of a theoretical approach based on physical data would involve so many variables which affect the settling rate that the more practical approach of direct observation seems unlikely to be replaced as the basis of design.The advent of synthetic fiocculents has introduced a modification in operation which affects design and should be considered. The authors review the subject and attempt to bring it up to date with present day procedure. Until recently the original work of Coe and Clevenger (1916) remained the basis of thickener design. They described their observation of the different zones encountered in settling, namely clarification, feed, transition, and compression or thickening- zones. The solids pass through the transition zone in settling from feed density to some higher density where settling ceases and ·some compression or compaction effect controls. the density obtained. The point at which the settling zone ceases to exist is known as the critical point.

"Abstract The continued concentration of building activities in cramped areas of city centres means more underground construction and facilities. Demand to minimize execution time and any kind of disturbance to business, general traffic, people and nearby technical structures is increasing. To answer these challenges foundation business has to develop schedule-wise and technically reliable deep excavation and foundation solutions in vulnerable surroundings and challenging soil conditions.Drilled pipe pile wall – RD-pile wall – is a combination of Ruukki drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections. Individual RD piles, typical diameters between 219 mm to 610 mm, are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole hammer (DTH) using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings.RD-pile walls have been used as permanent and temporary retaining walls for different kinds of demanding excavations and structures, such as bridge foundation, as quay wall and as sealing structure in rehabilitation of an existing dam. Rigidity and watertightness of the lower end of the RDpile wall is being researched as well as fire design issues examined. One of the most fascinating RDpile wall solution is to utilize the wall as a permanent underground basement wall. Reliable and rigid connection to bedrock decreases the bending moment and deflection of the wall and good fire resistance in addition to large variety of pile dimensions and steel grades gives possibilities to design and execute a cost-efficient basement wall and foundations without temporary retaining wall works. 1. IntroductionIn northern Scandinavian soil conditions, installation of sheet pile walls, or even secant pile walls, is often problematic due to the existence of hard and large boulders in the overburden, and especially when the retaining wall structure should penetrate to or into the hard bedrock. On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid-1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers)."

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

Previous fundamental research projects have indicated the value of continuous closure measurements in deep tabular excavations for improved support design, hazard assessment and for quantifying the effect of seismicity on stope closure. This paper describes further measurements in a VCR stope to validate some of the earlier findings. Calculation of the closure ratio showed that it is a good measure to identify different ground conditions and possible hazards. This work was supported by numerical modelling results, which showed that the closure ratio is very useful in discriminating the response of different geotechnical environments. Des projets précédents de recherche fondamentale ont démontré la valeur de mesures continues de fermeture dans le cas de profondes excavations tabulaires pour une conception améliorée du soutien, de l’évaluation du danger et pour quantifier l’effet de la séismicité sur l'affaissement du toit d’un chantier d’abattage. Le présent document décrit d’autres mesures dans un chantier d’abattage VCR afin de valider certaines des conclusions précédemment formulées. Le calcul du degré d'affaissement montre qu’il y va de soi d’identifier différentes conditions de sol ainsi que les dangers possibles. Les présents travaux ont été confirmés par des résultats de modélisation numérique, lesquels ont démontré que le taux d'affaissement est très utile quant à discerner la réponse dans des environnements géotechniques différents. Vorherige Forschungsprojekte haben den Wert von kontinuierlichen Setzungsmessungen im tiefen Sudafrikanischen Strebabbau angedeutet, vor allem fur Ausbaudesign und Risikobewertung, als auch fur die quantitative Bestimmungen der seismizitatsabhangigen Setzung. Dieses Referat beschreibt weitere Messungen in einer VCR Grube um fruhere Bestimmungen zu bewerten. Dass errechnete Konvergenzverhaltniss erweiste sich als eine gute Massnahme zur bestimmung von geotechnischen Zonen und moglichen Risiken. Numerische Analyse unterstutzte die vorliegende Arbeit und deutete darauf, dass das Konvergenzverhaltniss sehr brauchbar ist um Verhaltensunterschiede der geotechnischen Zonen zu erproben

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further.
