One of the problems associated with the maintenance of roadways in underground coal mines is that of dealing with roadway closure. Sidewall weakening technique is based on the transference of the high stress zone further away from the vicinity of roadway. This transferral is carried out by weakening parts of sidewalls of roadway by cut- ting slot, drilling a series of parallel holes or blasting during development stage. In the paper, the effect of sidewall weakening on the stability of roadway is studied by finite element analysis and field experiment. The finite element analysis shows that sidewall weakening can control the development of yield zone around a roadway, improving the stability of roadway. It is also shown that if in- situ horizontal stress is lower or higher than the in-situ vertical stress, it is difficult to obtain roadway stability by sidewall weakening. The field experiment shows that roadway closure can be controlled by sidewall weakening with blasting.

This paper presents the result of the analysis of strain-dependent concrete modulus from full-scale static axial compression load tests conducted on more than 200 instrumented cast-in-place barrettes and bored piles over the past 12 years, covering commonly adopted grades of concrete for heavy foundation construction in Malaysia and Singapore. The concrete modulus values, Ec, analysed were directly back-calculated from the material of the instrumented test piles by means of placing a layer of vibrating wire strain gauges near the pile head region. The best fit curve for back-calculated concrete secant modulus versus measured axial strain follows non-linear behaviour for both categories of test pile samples analysed. The result of the analysis seems to suggest that using average constant modulus value would generally lead to a significant error in load distribution computation, particularly at high stresses region.

The objective of this program was the development, design, fabrication, and laboratory testing of a mine-worthy continuous respirable dust monitoring system (CRDMS). The operation of the sensor unit of this system is based on the light scattering intensity of the respirable fraction of airborne dust. The CRDMS is compatible with the typical environmental rigors that characterize coal mines and, in particular, the shock, vibration, impact, moisture and dust conditions prevailing at active training machines. The sampled area must be within the breathing zone of the mining machine's operator, whose dust exposure is to be monitored by the CRDMS sensor unit. Instantaneous, as well as shift-averaged dust concentrations, are displayed and recorded for later retrieval, Alarm indications and other diagnostic information are provided. The project was completed with the delivery of three sensor/display units (SDU), one data retrieval unit (DRU), two mining-machine-compatible power supplies, and two [auxilliary] battery packs.

"The diverting of men from industry to combat in the world's war focused the attention of the operators in this country upon mechanical means of doing things. The demand for man-power -was so insistent that every available agency for multiplying it had to be employed. It was during the 1period of the war and immediately thereafter that development of the use of underground loading devices made most rapi4 progress. In all parts of the United States, mining engineers and mine managers were diligent in their efforts to develop mechanical loaders. The mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in every section of the country have secured, with the cooperation of the mine operators, data on the actual performance of the mechanical shovels in their districts, and have made them available to the author of this paper.No effort has been made to discuss exhaustively the subject of underground loading devices. It has been the object to collect together in one paper, records of the performance of all machines now in actual use. Improvements in the design of machines are constantly being made the performance records given in this paper relate to operation prior to March 1 1 1921. The records prior to 1920 cay not fully represent the work that could be accomplished with the present models of the same machine.The data secured are given exactly as reported by the mine operators. Since this data were collected there have been two underground loaders, of a different design, put into operation in the iron mines of the Lake Superior District. One is the John Mayne Sub-level loader, being tried by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Ishpeming, Mich., and the other is the Cole-Goudie shovel, being tried by the Oliver Mining Company, at Ironwood, Mich. No information has been secured regarding the performance of either of these machines."

The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. An examination of 60 mines, 11 illumination hardware manufacturers, and Q mobile face-equipment manufacturers was conducted to determine the state of the art of mine-illumination hardware, define lighting system installation and maintenance problems, and assess personnel acceptance of lighting. Longwall and mobile face-machine illumination were studied. Major problems on room and pillar installations include damage of exposed components, electrical failures, and reduced lamp life, with extreme variability in the degree of these problems. Most longwall systems had low or moderate maintenance requirements, cable damage being the most significant problem. Most mobile face-equipment operators liked their machines' lighting systems, but many complained of glare and other problems. Longwall lighting was unanimously accepted by face personnel, and most complaints were minor. Based on the survey, general installation and maintenance guidelines have been established, addressing hardware design aspects, approaches proved effective to minimize problems, and improper practices noted which are detrimental to effective lighting.

Sedimentary and igneous rocks are the two primary sources of phosphate that are mined and beneficiated to fertilizer. During the beneficiation process, phosphate is lost into the tailings. We investigated phosphate concentrations in tailings dumps at Minjingu mine, Tanzania using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to quantify the chemical compositions. The phosphate content in the tailings varied from 12.91% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) in Tailings 2 to 19.61% in Tailings Dump 1. The naturally occurring phosphate concentration in rocks ranges from 3% to 35%, and phosphate tailings from various locations with P2O5 concentrations as low as 6.46-12.65% have been beneficiated to commercial fertilizer. Our investigation revealed that phosphate concentrations in Minjingu tailings may be sufficient to be recovered for commercial applications. Suitable recovery methods are discussed, and we recommend that beneficiation should be performed to minimize the loss of phosphate into tailings. Further research is needed to identify the optimal beneficiation methodology.

[ ] In November 2005, Essroc Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, commissioned a long overland conveyor at their Nazareth plant in Pennsylvania. This conveyor, tagged CV-105, was designed to transport 1000 tph of limestone from the quarry to the kiln, and 400 tph of hot clinker (at 300°F) at back from the kiln to a handling facility about halfway back. Conveyor CV-105 is 8969 ft (2733 m) long. It gains 152 ft (46 m) of elevation in the first 1570 ft (480 m), then is mostly flat for the remaining 7400 ft (2250 m) (Figure 1). After the limestone is discharged at the head pulley, hot clinker is loaded onto the return side of the belt. This clinker can be discharged at one of two locations.

"Underground operation.In its broader sense the term ""mining"" is applied to all processes whereby raw materials are taken from the earth to be used as sources of mineral products. In a more restricted sense ""mining"" is applied to underground operations as contrasted with open pit work designated as quarrying. The tern is used in the restricted tense in this paper; for it relates to the exploitation of limestone deposits by modern methods of underground operation rather than by open pit methods.Present tendency toward miningIt may seem to some readers that a paper on mining limestone will find little general interest among lime plant operators, for only a limited number of them have yet resorted to this means of procuring raw materials. It is noteworthy, however, that a growing tendency exists toward underground operation, for one by one quarry owners are faced with increasing difficulties in open pit operation. It seems desirable, therefore, for operators to keep closely in touch with this gradual change in process, to inquire into the underlying causes, to compare costs, and to study the effects of the change in method on subsequent steps in calcining the stone to produce lime."

Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

In November 1940, the Bureau of Mines started exploration of the Three Blacks manganese properties - Black Diablo. in Pershing County and Black Eagle and Black .Rook in Lander County. The purpose was to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. It is reported that a small amount of manganese was mined from the Black Diablo during World. War 1. No mining except that necessary for assessment work had been done on the Black Eagle. Shipments were being made from the Black Rock deposit to a concentrator at Vain, Nev., while the Bureau's development work was progressing. The Black Diablo deposit consists of one patented claim owned by the Charleston. Hill National Manes Co. Mary L. Clough of Winnemicca, Nev., president. The deposit is about 20 miles by a gravel and dirt road southwest of Golconda, a town on U. S. Highway 40 and the Southern Pacific Railway, Pershing County, Nev. The deposit lies at an elevation of about 5,600 feet on the east flank of the north-south trending Sonoma Range. The property was leased by Messrs. Hollis Chatwin, T. E. Chatwin, and R. H. Richards of Salt Lake City and Mammoth, Utah. The lessees installed a crusher and erected an ore bin below the open cut on the deposit and mined and, shipped about 5,000 tons of about 30 to 52 percent manganese ore to the Columbia Steel Co., Provo, Utah.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004,and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November 2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL) ?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. "I offer a personal view of what the next 30 years holds for mineral processing. Re-stating that mineral processing will remain a vibrant industry in raw material production, growth opportunities in waste management are identified. The processing sequence familiar now (mining -mineral processing -extraction) will become more interwoven. In situ processing (i.e., milling underground) will evolve from concept to demonstration. Opportunities to exploit physical properties altered in chemical (pyro-and hydro-) processing will present themselves. In primary grinding, the path to AG/SAG milling will progress with little deviation but opportunities in regrinding are wide open. Flotation will see the trend to designing bubble/particle reactors accelerate simultaneously with a vigorous response from mechanical cell suppliers. Gravity separation remains a bastion of the lone inventor but I anticipate that the new lines will come from the waste management business. I finish by examining the ""research cycle"", identifying growth in small ""high tech"" companies and university research centres.IntroductionI have been asked to offer a personal view of""where we are going in mineral processing?"". Gazing into crystal balls is quite a cottage industry as we approach the end of the millennium. Academics are often asked to assume the role of visionary, I presume because it is considered in their mandate, to reflect and philosophize (or, less charitably, because they are considered to have the time). Since this is the 30th Annual Canadian Mineral Processors Operators Conference, I am tempted to suggest the next 30 years as my frame of reference. This is about equivalent to one engineer's career or, given it takes typically 15 years to go from concept to realization in mineral process engineering (Napier-Munn, l 997a), about 2 ""invention cycles"". With this length of cycle, much that is familiar now will remain so over the 30 years.Research and development (R&D) is in response to need. The overarching need in mining is to find new ore bodies. Process developments cannot compensate for a depleting deposit or a declining commodity price. Mineral processing R&D is characterized by incremental gains, aimed at pushing the mine down the cost per tonne league table. Breakthroughs are the exception (flotation at the turn of the century was one). This must be kept in mind when trying to predict the future in our business."

The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

Daily field management of earthmoving operations requires quick and regular decisions for allocating available equipment to different jobs on a project. A general foreman?s day starts with matching several activities with a suitable set of available equipment to achieve the highest productivity and lowest unit cost. Usually, this decision-making process needs to be quick, and depends to a great extent on the foreman?s experience, which varies from one individual to another. Many analytical solutions with various degrees of sophistication and optimization exist to address such decisions. However, adopting any of these solutions is contingent on how accessible and easy-to-use the solution is. This paper discusses the development process of a webaccessible solution for evaluating earthmoving fleet composition and allocation scenarios. The solution relies on discrete event simulation and an optimization backend engine, but introduces the user with a simplified and easy-to-use interface that is accessible from any mobile device, and is customized to specific user?s needs. The developed system gathers most equipment and site-related input data from a company?s information systems to minimize user input. The user mainly needs to formulate equipment and job combinations and allocation scenarios (e.g. soil type, quantity, and hauling distance), according to equipment availability each day. Then the system will evaluate the productivity and unit cost estimates for each scenario, allowing the user to choose the most suitable one. It may also be used to automatically recommend the optimum solution given an available list of equipment. The paper presents the process followed in prototyping the proposed system in collaboration with a major Canadian earthmoving contractor, and customizing it to the user needs within the company. It also describes the overall structure of the developed system and its core simulation model.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

"The Brunswick Mine ore requires fine grinding to achieve liberation of minerals. With 25mm slugs as the grinding media in the ball mill, there was a limitation of a P80 of 25 microns on the CuPb regrind circuit. Results from pilot plant testing showed that the separation efficiency could be increased through fine grinding with a P80 of 15 microns.Options considered were the capital expenditure for new fine grinding equipment such as a vertimill or the use of the present ball mill equipment with smaller media. The Wheelabrator Allevard Enterprise (WAE) millpebs product was chosen because it was a smaller media with a distribution of steel pellets between 5 to 12 mm.With millpebs the grinding product was reduced in size from a P80 of 25 microns to a P80 of less than 19 microns. The power draw to achieve the finer grind was 13% lower while the media consumption was 57% higher.The millpebs grinding media was also tested on the zinc regrind mill. The purpose of the trial was to understand what the media consumption and power draw would be with the charge lowered to achieve an equivalent grind as obtained with the slugs. The media consumption was approximately the same and the power draw was reduced by 30%.INTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine ore is a complex Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag sulphide ore with the grain size of the minerals varying from submicron blebs to particles up to several mm in size. The ore is ground progressively finer in stages. The first step of grinding occurs in the SAG mill circuit. The product sizing 80% passing 95 microns is fed to the CuPb prefloat stage (Cormier et al 2002). The tails from the prefloat is then further ground to a P80 of 35 microns for the CuPb rougher flotation. The final liberation for the CuPb circuit takes place in the CuPb regrind circuit. The regrinding mill further liberates the cleaner scavenger concentrate, second cleaner tails and third cleaner tails. The reasoning for the progressive grinding is to achieve fine grinding without having galena over ground due to its high specific gravity that preferentially sends it to the cyclone underflow."
