The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect bit drill wear and use the equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel Software. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.

This paper describes the driving of a 400 m long by 25 m diameter highway tunnel through sensitive, overconsolidated silts and clays. The design concept requires the construction of the permanent support system, consisting of 24 concrete filled perimeter drifts, before excavating the mass core. General construction procedures used during the construction of the perimeter drifts are described.

The need for yieldable ground support, particularly in high stress or deep mining conditions, has grown in recent years. This paper highlights some of the current industry limitations and provides selection criteria for a new yielding ground support system, DSI?s Dynatork Bolt. This bolt distinguishes itself by withstanding 16 ? 30 kJ of energy deflecting loads anywhere from 7 ? 20 tons (depending on the energy). A summary of the laboratory test results and case studies will also be presented as a measure of the performance of this dynamic product.

Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

As we compete for close margins in wholesale sales, the effects of both quality and price have a major impact on the cost of producing electricity.SO2 emission allowances have traded as low as$60/ton to as high as $215/ton over the last three years. This price spread in emission allowances clearly demonstrates the correlation between the quality of fuels versus the price utilities will be willing to pay for them. This paper provides an overview of the effects of the qualities of fuel, coupled with transportation as well as environmental concerns on the price of fuel and the ability to compete in a deregulated electric market.

Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. For open pits developed in tropical climates the upper portions of the pit walls are often located in residual soils and weathered rock. Due to the presence of relict structures, and the relatively low strength of the residual soils and weathered rock, design slope angles in these materials have to be developed by blending the results of kinematic assessments of geologic structures with rock mass stability analyses and traditional soil mechanics. Background information on the engineering considerations of residual soils are discussed, and the results of geotechnical assessments for proposed pit design of the Brisas del Cuyuni Project, located in southeastern Venezuela, are presented.

The "Service de Protection Technique"of the "Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire" was asked by the Commission of European Communities to conduct measurement campaigns which would make it possible to evaluate, on an experimental basis, the collective risk to miners exposed to radon in underground, non-uranium mines located in countries within the European Community. 1. METHODOLOGY USED TO CONDUCT THE CAMPAIGNS This campaign is original in that direct measurements of the individual monthly exposure to potential [a]-energy from short-lived radon daughters are made using personal [a]-dosimeters described previously (1). We call this type of dosimetry "personal dosimetry". The workers who wear the personal [a]-dosimeters were selected taking into account the various categories of workers and their work assignments in the various areas of the mine. Another way of finding out the occupational exposure of these miners consists in making numerous measurements of the radon concentration at the various work places, taking into account the time spent at each place by each worker. This procedure is too complex for an evaluation of the collective risk as requested by the Commission of European Communities and was therefore rejected. Additional data was gathered during these measurements campaigns using the following techniques (table 1). These techniques provide the most reliable estimates of recoverable tonnage and grade and uniform and realistic confidence limits. A schema has been developed which categorizes the company's successive evaluation phases. Clear separation is intended between geostatistical estimates and other factors in project evaluation such as mining, metallurgy, and economics. Company management seeks consistent and reliable estimates for investment decision-making and to meet growing demands for disclosure of mineral assets.

Due to improved, stringent safety regulations, many modern road tunnels are statistically safer, per kilometer, than above ground roadways. However, the public perception and reaction in the event of a serious tunnel fire is very different to that associated with a surface incident. Vehicle fires in road and rail tunnels are recognized to represent an immediate and extreme danger to the patrons of those systems. Unlike workers in the mining and civil construction industries, the general public are neither trained nor equipped to fight fires or evacuate under deteriorating smoke conditions. Accordingly, for the majority of modern transportation tunnels the ventilation infrastructure is sized on the requirement to control the combustion products from worst-case fire scenarios and to provide a tenable evacuation route for the tunnel users. It is common for these same emergency ventilation systems to be employed, often in a reduced capacity, for other operating modes such as the dilution of pollutants during congested traffic conditions. This is one of the fundamental differences to mine ventilation, where primary ventilation systems are not typically sized based on fire scenarios. This paper presents an overview of the subject of fires in vehicular tunnels. This includes a brief history of major transportation tunnel fires followed by a discussion on the resulting legislation and standards that govern the design and operation of tunnel emergency ventilation systems. A summary is provided on the common criteria, theory, and design techniques that are employed during tunnel emergency ventilation systems design. Information is provided on fire detection and suppression, with a discussion on the growing acceptance of wet suppression as a means to mitigate major fires in road tunnels worldwide.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

INTRODUCTION The first Dispute Review Board (DRB) was utilized on a tunnel project 20 years ago. Increasingly utilized on a wide range of construction projects, DRB&apos;s are becoming the norm on tunnel and underground projects. This paper summarizes the growth in this usage, uses observations and experience to establish that barriers to the utilization of DRB&apos;s are more perceived than real and that many arguments against the DRB concept are not valid, and notes some of the salient elements that should be considered in practice to optimize DRB effectiveness. The purpose of the paper is to provide an annotated checklist for current and prospective users. The basic concept, structure, and operation of DRB&apos;s are described elsewhere and will not be repeated here (ASCE, 1991). DISPUTE REVIEW BOARD USAGE A compilation of Dispute Review Board usage for tunnel and underground projects to January 1994 indicated use on 63 contracts with a cumulative construction value of $3.8 billion and a total of 60 disputes settled. As of that same date, DRB&apos;s were planned for another 63 contracts with an estimated construction value of $4.7 billion. (A listing of these 126 projects is available from the authors.) This success and popularity have spread to other civil projects as well as process and building construction. The increase in DRB usage has been exponential. See Figure 1.

Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Spiral separators are commonly used to upgrade sand-sized particles in both the coal and mineral processing industries. Many plants utilize multiple stages of cleaning and/or scavenging spirals to improve recovery and/or final product grade. Field studies suggest, however, that the layout of industrial spiral circuits is often less than optimal. This oversight can usually be attributed to a failure by plant designers to consider fundamental process engineering rules that govern the layout of complex separation circuits. This article reviews some of these important rules as specifically applied to multistage spiral circuit design. Two industrial case studies, one involving the upgrading of heavy mineral sands and a second involving the cleaning of fine coal, are presented to illustrate the impact of good design protocols on spiral circuit performance.

The paper in based on laboratory and pilot plant investigations which led to the development of a series of processes for production of high purity metals from nickel-copper-cobalt mattes of a wide range of composition. The selection of ammonia pressure leaching or acid pressure leaching for various mattes is discussed. This is followed by discussion of various methods for leach solution purification and metal separation. The metals of high purity are produced by reduction with hydrogen from purified solutions. Examples are given of complete flowsheets for a number of mattes. Drawing upon those examples, general principles for the selection of the most suitable treatment process for particular material are outlined. Under certain circumstances, those processes may replace part of the pyrometallurgical treatment and all of the electrolytic refining steps which are customary in the treatment of nickel-copper-cobalt mattes.

This paper focuses on the separation and extraction of lead and zinc from Egyptian ore at the Eastern Desert close to Red Sea. The ore sample contains cerussite, galena, hemimorphite and other impurities. Experimental program includes flotationof galena using xanthate collector and cerussite using oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate to depress hemimorphite tailing. Galena, and hemi-morphite are converted to carbonate with sodium carbonate prior to metal extraction. Lead and zinc are extracted pyrometallurgically at 1050°C and750°C or electrochemically respectively. The overall performance of the applied method amounts to 99.2%. Extraction efficiency of lead and zinc amounts to 98% and 94.5 % respectively. A model assumed that galena and cerussite in the ore are partially oxidized and can be liberated by grinding. Oleic acid selectively reacts with cerussite in a multistep sequence. Preliminary cost estimate shows that the price of the products is competitive to their local market prices.
