The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. In their excellent paper, Milev and Spottiswoode have provided quantitative and definitive descriptions of an important phenomenon that hitherto has been largely the subject of conjecture. They convincingly show that ?site-response? can amplify the strong ground motions on the rock-wall of a stressed tunnel by a factor of 10 to 12 compared with the PPV in the solid rock mass (at the same distance from source). This knowledge gives us a firm foundation from which to begin to build an understanding of the mechanism of damage resulting from a rock burst. Regrettably this understanding is still far from adequate, in my opinion. The authors of this paper, however, have made some statements that are too reassuring and which tend to reinforce the sense of complacency that prevails among many members of the rock engineering community on the deep gold mines.

The Outokumpu steel belt sintering technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. Hot air is blown through the moving bed of raw pellets. Direct temperature and flow measurements are difficult to do in the bed of a real scale belt sintering process. Therefore, a tested and reliable mathematical model would be a valuable help for optimising operational parameters of the process and designing new constructional improvements. The aim of this work is to present a mathematical model that calculates the gas flow and temperature distribution in the bed of pellets and the atmosphere. Computational fluid dynamics program FLUENT is used to calculate the gas flow, composition and temperature of the gas in the sintering bed during processing. Energy equation for the bed, containing the effects of evaporation of water and oxidation of carbon and iron oxide, will be added to the model to obtain the temperature of the pellets. The porous media model used for pressure drop calculations in the bed is shortly discussed. A comparison between CFD-calculations and experiments with a pilot scale batch-sintering reactor are also presented. The final model can be used as an engineering tool when developing the process and the equipment further. Different designs can be easily tested with the model and the effects of the changes to the flow pattern and temperature distribution can be studied.

In the ladle refining process, the ?FeO?-content of the ladle slag is of great importance in the chemistry as well as the energetics of the process. An optimization of the process requires an accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic activities of ?FeO? in the ladle slags. Due to the discrepancies in the existing data, renewed attempts are being made at the Royal Institute of Technology to generate reliable data for binary, ternary and multi component slags containing ?FeO? at steelmaking temperatures. In order to measure the activities of ?FeO? in the slags, a gas equilibration technique was employed in the present work. The slags, kept in Pt-crucibles, were equilibrated with a CO-CO2-Ar gas mixture and quenched after equilibration. The chemical composition of the slag was analyszed. From a knowledge of the thermodynamics of Fe-Pt system, the ?FeO? activities in the slag could be evaluated. The results of the present studies, together with other literature values, were optimized in the slag software, THERMOSLAG® developed in the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The results of the optimization are presented. Model calculations were performed with the KTH slag software, THERMOSLAG®, by using plant data from OVAKO Steel, Hofors, Sweden. It was found that oxygen estimations in the metal from the ?FeO? analyses of slags, obtained by conventional sampling and analysis methods, where less reliable. Estimation of the oxygen levels utilizing the sulphur partition between the slag and the metal were carried out using the THERMOSLAG® software. Reasonable estimations of the oxygen contents in the metal confirmed that this could be a very useful tool for the plant operator. The viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-FeO slags were measured under conditions ofCaO/SiO2=1.15–1.6, 10–13 percent Al2O3, 5–10 percent MgO and 5–20 percent FeO. Slag viscosity decreased with increasing FeO content at a fixed basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag. Slag viscosity at low FeO (<7.5 percent FeO) exhibited a minimum value by increasing MgO content in slag. Viscosity decreased with increasing slag basicity up to 1.3 while it increased as slag basicity increased from 1.3 to 1.5. Thus, it was proposed that the driving force for the decreases of slag viscosity would be an increase in depolymerization of silicate network at C/S=1.3, while the viscous behaviour at C/S>1.3 would be increased with increasing the chemical potential of primary solid phase e.g. dicalcium silicate. A thermodynamic approach for the activity of primary solid phase in molten slags resulted in a reasonable relationship between viscosity and slag components. Therefore, it was confirmed that slag viscosity in basic slags system (C/S>1.3) could be determined by the chemical potential of dicalcium silicate. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. In today?s gas turbines, the emphasis is on saving energy and reducing the amounts of pollutants emitted. This can be attained only by designing alloys with higher melting points and the capability to retain mechanical integrity at increased temperatures. The development of nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs) has reached its limit, as the alloys are operating at critical temperatures close to their melting points. Further increase in the operating temperatures will result in dissolution of the strengthening phases and even melting. Recent trends are towards developing materials that are adequately strong but have much higher melting points and corrosion resistance than the NBSAs that are currently in use. Studies conducted on Pt alloys with similar structure to the NBSAs have presented mechanical results that are promising. This has led to further development of these alloys as a replacement for NBSAs. The operations of gas turbines are usually limited by hot corrosion, which could lead to catastrophic failures. Increased temperatures have an adverse effect on the corrosion of the alloys by making the environment more aggressive. Hence, during a material selection process, the corrosion behaviour of any selected material for a highly specialized application such as gas turbines needs to be assessed. Generally, coatings are applied to combat degradation by salt deposits, hence coated and uncoated NBSAs were selected as benchmark alloys. Corrosion mechanisms and kinetic studies of the Pt alloys were conducted. High temperature hot corrosion (HTHC) tests were conducted at 950°C for540 hours. Analysis of the corrosion products was conducted using a Raman spectrometer, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction study of the phases that formed. Both coated and uncoated NBSAs failed under the test conditions. Samples were covered with a porous non-adherent greenish layer which is characteristic of NiO. Pt alloys displayed superior corrosion properties compared with the benchmark alloys.

Special General Meeting A Special General Meeting to consider the changes to the Constitution was held immediately prior to the AGM. 1. Purpose In order for the SAIMM to remain relevant and ensure maximum value to all members, Council propose three changes to the Constitution. 2. Background Three changes to the Constitution were proposed by the Council on 21 July 2006. These changes now have to be approved by means of a ballot at a Special General Meeting. These three proposed changes are discussed briefly below:

In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? Workplace challenges ? The impact of HIV/AIDS and other employee wellness issues ? Changes and challenges in workplace environment i.e. the mining industry.

Knowing the origin of the relevant and irrelevant components of the nugget effect is essential to optimize the process under study. This paper describes the causes of the nugget effect and, its dependency on the sample support, sampling density, and on the QA/QC procedures. Several examples of natural and ?human? nugget effect are given. A method to estimate the magnitude of the relevant and irrelevant components is suggested. Finally, the economic consequences of misunderstanding the nugget effect are analysed.
