In this paper, Stress-Strain-Temperature relations for Shape Memory Alloys are studied. Temperature effects on Shape Memory Alloys are different from those related to ordinary materials. In ordinary materials, elastic characteristics can be assumed to be constant in low temperature ranges, and only the deflection arising from temperature changes could be added to the elastic defection. As long as two phases of austenite and martensite could be present in Shape Memory Alloys simultaneously, elastic modulus follows temperature and temperature gradient. In continue a smart actuator is investigated considering a homogeneous cantilever beam. Beam bending is established by using shape memory wires. An initial strain is imposed to shape memory wires in a low temperature, and then, they are installed in the outer surface of the beam. Therefore, since the temperature is imposed in these wires and they cannot have free recovery strain, the compressive recovery stress will be produced in the outer surface. This will result in a deflection in axial direction of the beam. At first, beam deflection is calculated on the basis of theoretical relations and solving the relevant differential equations. Afterwards, experimental tests are performed on an elastomeric beam equipped with shape memory wires. When a voltage is applied, a temperature rise will occur in the wires; then, this temperature rise causes a deflection in the beam. Finally, the theoretical and experimental results? comparison indicates a good conformity. One capability of this actuator is its high flexibility, and by controlling the inlet current, the end-beam deflection can be controlled.

With continually increasing energy prices, the mining industry has been on the search for new energy optimization technologies. One area that is garnering great interest is Ventilation-On-Demand (VOD). Prior to selection and implementation of a VOD solution, it is important to fully understand the mine requirements as well as its existing infrastructure and the interaction with other automation in place at the site. With this information, a business case can be generated including a cost versus benefit comparison for various control strategies. To assist in the development of the business case, this paper will identify key areas for consideration and recommendations for an implementation plan.

"These standards were developed by the CIM for use with the value or worth of a Mineral Property as opposed to “evaluation” where the key objective is an economic assessment or determination of the economic merit of a propertyP1 .0 BACKGROUNDPl.1 There are at present no comprehensive standards for valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) specifically recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties.Pl.2 On May 5, 1999 at the Calgary Annual General Meeting, CIM Council approved the formation of a Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMV al) to be co-chaired by Keith Spence (Chairman of the CIM Mineral Economics Society) and Dr. William Roscoe (Roscoe Postle Associates Inc.).Pl.3 The mandate of CIMVal is to recommend Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general and to be adopted by Canadian securities regulators and Canadian stock exchanges.Pl.4 The members of CIMVal represent of a mix of professional disciplines and experience in the field of Mineral Property valuation:Keith N. Performance of industrial gas turbine engines in terms of power output, reduced cooling and efficiency have been continuously increasing in parallel with aero gas turbines due to the advances made in the development of new materials, protective thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and the advanced diagnostics to monitor service induced problems such as hot corrosion, thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue and other operational issues, Environmental attack (hot corrosion or high temperature oxidation) is a common degradation mode in the hot section of the gas turbine, Hot corrosion occurs when Na or K bearing compounds in the environment or in the fuel combine with other contaminants such as S and Pb or V to form corrosive sulphates or vanadates thus attacking the protective oxide on the turbine airfoil, These problems pose far more threat to new turbine engine materials such as directional solidified, single crystals and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). The CMCs due to their increased temperature capability, when used in the combustion chamber, are likely to reduce the peak temperatures attained during combustion and therefore provide the benefits of reduced emissions of oxides of C and N, These issues will be reviewed critically and their impact will be assessed on gas turbine lives. With respect to alternate fuels, past experience has shown that utilization of residual oils and coal derived fuels in gas turbines have resulted in complex deposition and corrosion processes, In recent years biomass derived alternate fuels have been used either through a gasification cycle or through direct firing of the biomass derived liquid fuel with a view to reduce Green House Gases (GHGs) and improve the climatic conditions. In both cases, the resulting high temperature corrosion processes (in the presence of alkaloids in the fuel) are also very complex, leading to premature removal of hot section components, Technology solutions mitigating these fundamental problems will be reviewed and solutions presented.

The Granby ores may be divided into three groups or classes. The No. I ore is a heavy pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sulphide carrying some free silica, and calcite. No. 2 ore carries the same general group of sulphides as does No. 1, but in a lesser amount. The gangue is an altered greenstone. No. 3 ore has a smaller amount of sulphides than either of the others. Analyses of these ores is as follows: Cu. Si02 Fe. CaO S. Al 203 MgO No. I. Drill cores show a certain dissemination of sulphides in portions of the rock, so that grinding to 5 per cent. + 65 mesh with 65 per cent.-200 mesh liberates the sulphide minerals very completely. The association of the sulphides is fundamental. The pyrite was probably deposited first and was followed by a portion of the chalcopyrite, or these two portions of the sulphide minerals were deposited together.

"The Jellicoe is the most westerly mine in the Little Long Lac area with a record of gold production. The property is largely covered with overburden and the ore deposit was found by diamond drilling along the projected strike of a gold bearing zone at Magnet lake 1 ½ miles to the east on the property of Bankfield Consolidated Mines, Limited. In 1940-41 Jellicoe mined the whole orebody of approximately 14,000 tons, recovering 5,620 ounces of gold.The vein is in light-coloured greywacke. A mile-long dyke of fine-grained quartz feldspar porphyry 5 to 10 feet in width lies 100 feet south of the vein. A similar, even longer dyke lies 700 to 800 feet north of the vein. Some narrow diorite dykes are also rather closely associated. The porphyry dykes are gold bearing, but not ore. The vein material is quartz and silicified and brecciated greywacke. Mineralization consists of native gold, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and some sphalerite."

"The paper/presentation will review the evolution of diesel technology from older diesel engines (1990 vintage) through to the latest technology as a result of the ever changing emissions regulations. It will encompass the EPA Tier levels as well as the latest Euro Stage V emissions. The next step with technology will be to address the CO2 emissions, which translates to improving fuel efficiencies of the product as well as other technologies like battery electric, hybrid and fuel cells. As technology progresses it also becomes important to improve connective diagnostic systems to support maintenance practices and improve efficiencies. What will also be presented will be the key emissions changes to the different gaseous and particle mass elements as the products have transitioned from the EPA Tier 3 through to Tier 4 Final regulations. Offering a range of different technologies to the underground mining market matters as not all pieces of equipment will perform optimally due to its duty cycle and application. INTRODUCTION Rudolf Diesel built his first well-known prototype of the high-compression engine in 1897. Since that time, the diesel engine has evolved into one of the world’s most capable and reliable forms of power generation. Diesel engines can be found in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, powering everything from agriculture and construction equipment to power generators and marine vessels. In the early days the emissions from diesels was very poor and extensive work has been accomplished over the decades to make the product more environmentally friendly. This is more important in underground mining where the space is limited and ventilation is expensive and challenging. DISCUSSION The key driver of the development of diesel technology is the legislation globally around engine emissions. The emission level requirements over the years has forced diesel engine manufacturers to build a deep technical understanding of the system and how to innovate and optimize key elements of the engine. Cummins expertise has been built over the years as the diesel engine has evolved from a relatively simple mechanical engine to an electronic system with advanced air handling, fuel system, after treatment, and controls. Cummins has also continued to expand into systems beyond diesel, including natural gas. Many new components have been added to diesel engines to reduce emissions while improving fuel efficiency and reliability and, at the same time, reduce the total cost of ownership to the customer."

Thermal power plants convert thermal energy due to nuclear reactions or the combustion of coal, gas, heavy oil, or some other hydrocarbon to electrical energy. They consist of a variety of equipment, such as boilers, turbines, generators, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment. Any factor that affects the equipment efficiency affects the overall efficiency. Analysis of the cooling tower and raw water using the Langlier Saturation and Ryznar Stability Indices showed that the cooling water at Sarchesmeh was slightly scaling with respect to silica. Cold lime softening was found to be a cost-effective method to produce cooling water with adequate properties to reduce the cooling water make up from 85 to 70 m3/h and blow down rate from 35 to 20 m3/h.

In addition to its importance in agricultural production, Wisconsin is a very large manufacturing state and its rank in the metal working industries is probably first among the States of the Union per unit of population. The University of Wisconsin is a state supported institution and the Wisconsin tradition has always emphasized the relation of the University to the state and its responsibility to exercise its leader-ship where it might, in any and every way, for the development and benefit of the state and the community. The Department of Metallurgy of the University realized its responsibilities in the carrying out of the co-operative tradition and, two' years ago, an experiment was started in co-operative research between the University and certain of the industrial plants of the state. At the present time this work has so far progressed that it is no longer an experiment, and its results prove that this co-operative research may be carried on very advantageously and that, under the conditions existing in the state, the method employed has been satisfactory.

A variety of practical tests have been tried in the mining industry to determine the support properties of mine roof bolts. Such tests include torsion wrench readings, hammer blow tests and the use of plates with built-in tension indicators. This paper gives some details of pull tests with a hydraulic jack, as carried out in coal mines of western Canada. M A~Y criteria exist for establishing the efficiency of roof bolting, and the one adopted de-pends on the nature of the problem and on the individual leanings of the investigators. Consequently, sufficient studies have not been made from a common viewpoint or under similar geological and techno-logical conditions to compare these methods of evaluation. However, regardless of whether certain tests provide sufficient factual data to form a basis for theoretical research on bolting or not, many of these tests can and do provide a positive means of judging the suitability of chosen roof bolting techniques and equipment under definite geological conditions.

"WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO is to review or report very briefly and generally on the most important subject areas of environmental concern within the mining industry and to indicate the progress being made. First, however, it seems to me both appropriate and necessary to refer to what I said in an address to the CIM Annual Western Meeting, in November 1971, in Vancouver. At that time, I tried to convey: that the awareness and alertness of this far-flung and diversified industry was sharply on the up-swing; that the knowledge of helpful technology for the abatement of pollution by water and solids was significantly increasing; that most mines were doing something about it; that many had already achieved a recycling of process water to a really significant extent; that progress was being made - though not without considerable difficulty - on the large-scale neutralization and subsequent chemical treatment of acid- and metals-bearing waters; that increasing work was being done by individual mining companies on methods for the vegetation of completed tailings impoundments; and that it had been possible to develop a meaningful estimate of the amount of money to be spent by the industry on environmental control measures during the period 1971-75 (as much as $500,- 000,000 ) . Reference was also made at that time to the constructive work in hand toward the fixation, elimination or dispersion of sulphur from smelters and to the considerable attention which was being given by the indust(y itself toward in-plant problems, e.g., dust and noise. Finally, note was taken of the fact that the inclusion of environmental control costs in the pre-operational financial provisions of new mining operations is now established practice."

SOME 20 years ago, upon finishing second year at the University of Manitoba, I was faced with the choice of whether I wanted to be a geologist or a chemist. Accordingly, I sought out Professor Brownell, Head of the Department of Geology, to ask him what a geologist did. His reply contained the statement that following graduation one went out into the field in northern Canada for 5 to 15 years to reduce to practice what had been learned at university. To a young man, very socially conscious, even one year, let alone 5 to 10, in a small mining community sounded like being banished to a monastery in the Himalayas and thus I turned to chemistry. Moving to the present, last month I asked a geologist, and then a mining engineer, what does the fresh graduate in their field do these days? The reply was: usually serve an apprenticeship for an indeterminate period either underground or in the field learning the job.

The environmental control program at Cassiar Mine is an active one involving government, unions and company personnel all working together to achieve a goal- "A clean and safe working environment". This can only be achieved by utilizing three of Cassiar's most important resources; i.e., people, time and money. Past environmental programs have more than proved that the goal can be reached and. with the future programs now in progress. Cassiar Asbestos will achieve its environmental goals.
