"Hatch and ArcelorMittal Mines Canada have combined their expertise to develop a dynamic model of the latter’s Iron Ore Pellet Plant in Quebec, Canada. This model was used to predict the benefits of different expansion projects, as well as asses the best implementation sequence.Two modelling tools were used: a discrete-event simulation software used to develop the dynamic model of the Pellet Plant and an in-house process simulator. The latter was based on operational data and known behavior of the process, and was calibrated with historical data gathered under different operating conditions.The results of the process simulator were used as input values for the dynamic model, which included all of the operation steps of the pelletizing process, from concentrate beneficiation to baking of the pellets. The model has been validated by assessing its capacity to represent adequately the operation of the plant during a 20-month operating period. It was able to reproduce the plant capacity within a precision of 1.2%.Simulated “what-if” scenarios allowed quantifying the production increase associated with the addition of new equipment such as ball mills or balling discs, implemented individually or in combination. Results revealed a potential 10% increase in the annual plant production by adding additional equipment in the two most limiting sectors of the plant, grinding and agglomeration. The simulation results made it possible to quantify the synergistic effect of two projects on plant throughput; the model showed that the combination of two projects resulted in a greater production increase than the sum of the same projects evaluated individually.Now that it has proven reliable, the simulation tool can readily be used by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada process engineers to perform simulations for equipment optimization, and to evaluate the impact of various operating parameters such as equipment availability and tonnage, product mix or concentrate quality. This work showed that a reliable model can be developed based on known parameters in combination with the proper integration of the process knowledge."

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. "Total iron ore reserves in India, as reported by the Indian Bureau of mines, are 23.6 billion tons. Hematite iron ore reserves constitute about 45 % of the total reserve. If we go by the National Steel Policy-2005 projections, India’s supply of hematite iron ore would not last more than 40 years. Laboratory investigations were carried out for the development of a process flow sheet for treating low grade as well as Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) iron ore. The purpose of these investigations was to aim for better resource utilization.Beneficiation studies were conducted on samples of low grade and siliceous iron ore from the Dalli mines, a captive mine of the Bhilai Steel Plant and BHQ ore from Southern states of India. The process flowsheet, developed for upgrading of low grade iron ore, incorporates wet screening of the ore at 0.5 mm, followed by grinding of the +0.5 mm fraction to below 0.5 mm. The whole –0.5 mm fraction, after grinding, was treated in a conventional hydro-cyclone and stub cyclone followed by treatment in Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). This resulted in a concentrate product having >66% Fe content from a feed containing 55.5% Fe with an iron recovery of 48 %. The process flowsheet developed for treating BHQ ore in the laboratory resulted in an increase in iron grade in the concentrate from 43.4 to 61.3 Fe % with a yield of 51.7 % .INTRODUCTIONThe classification of Indian iron ore resources have been made compatible with United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), which is more scientific and has been adopted in most countries in the world. Iron ore reserves and resources estimated using the UNFC classification system, as of April 01,2000 are about 12,906 million tons of hematite ore and 10,628 million tons of magnetite ore. The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has given a breakdown of these reserves by designation as either lumps or fines of hematite iron ore (Table 1). The percentage of the reserves reported lumps and fines are 42 and 34% of the total reserves respectively. High grade iron ore is less than 10% of the total reserve."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. The paper will deal with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state. Key Words: stacking, mobile stackers, Linatex Separators, potash mill tailings, reclaim brine ponds, settling ponds, tailings pile. IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65% solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dikes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

ABSTRACT It is possible to adequately describe chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), in industrial and mining wastewater in constructed wetlands by applying different kinetic models (e.g., halforder, second-order). Accounting for hydraulic transport of contaminants in reduction equations can also improve such description. The authors developed an explicit advection-dispersion bulk flow equation and applied it to model Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The results indicated that the model adequately described wetland exit Cr(VI) concentrations and Cr(VI) reduction, representing an improvement over the commonly used graphic method and potentially improving the wetland design.

Tailings and water management facilities are integral components of mine and mill operations. They must be managed for the long term to ensure that safe and environmentally responsible stewardship is achieved. The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has developed and published two manuals to provide guidance to mining companies on sound practices for the safe and environmentally responsible management of tailings facilities: ???A Guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities; and ???Developing an Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance Manual for Tailings and Water Management Facilities. The Guides were designed to help companies develop and implement tailings management systems that include environmental and safety criteria, to improve the consistency of application of sound engineering and management principles to tailings and water management facilities through their full life cycle, and to demonstrate this to regulators and the public.

"A major thrust in industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements in control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.IntroductionEvery modem concentrator has a state-of-the-art computer control system in place. Several of these are contemplating installing, or have installed, advanced control systems, such as expert systems, but the foundation of their control system remains the PI controller. Although the authors are not aware of any survey or published information for the mineral processing industry, it is reasonable to assume that it would be similar to the pulp and paper industry. ""The average [pulp] mill has some 2000 control loops of which 97% use PI control. This means that PID, dead time compensation, adaptive controllers, specialized algorithms, ... , constitute only 3% of the installed base."" (Bialkowski [1992]).Bialkowski [1992] also stated that ""If you have been keeping score, only 20% of the loops surveyed actually decrease variability in automatic over manual mode of operation, in the short term."" He attributed the problems to: poor tuning (30% of all loops), control valve problems (30% of all loops) and process problems (20% of all loops). There appear to be a serious need to go back to basics and review the existing control system."

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

Success in implementing new technology for metallurgical processes is not a foregone conclusion: This paper includes a survey of 23 new technology-based metallurgical plant start-ups, in which the authors have identified 7 successes, 9 difficult start-ups, and 7 failures. Success is defined not only as meeting the schedule and budget to the end of mechanical completion; the key goal is a fast ramp up to the full design production level, with minimum plant and equipment modifications required after start-up. This paper sets out the key factors that underlie achievement of a quick production ramp up curve, as determined from the authors' project experiences and a quantitative analysis of over twenty metallurgical plant start-ups, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Thorough test-work and pilot plants, plus appropriate scale-up to the full commercial plant, are key determinants of success in implementing new technology in metallurgical processes. Another critical factor is the number of new elements and their interactions. Project phasing is also particularly important for new technology projects, with appropriate review after each phase to develop a risk mitigation plan for the subsequent phase. New technology projects need committed champions to advance the project in the face of sceptics, but also require dispassionate and unbiased experts to ask the hard questions. As a project evolves, it is important to periodically question the appropriateness of assumptions, as well as to re-assess the relevance and completeness of data from test-work I pilot plants I industrial analogues. Sufficient human and financial resources are required to complete the often arduous implementation phase. During the ramp-up period, the operation generates little positive cash flow; however, significant expertise and capital are required for the de-bottlenecking projects that are often necessary to reach the plant's design output level.

"This paper describes the design of an SABC grinding circuit using CEET technology applied to grindability data produced from testing 100 samples and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The data distribution required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the 130 million ton Ruby Creek orebody together with a mine plan of about 11000 blocks to be mined during the proposed 18 year life of the mine. The mill design was then made with consideration for the estimated hardness of each block in terms of both SAG and Ball milling with allowance for annual periods when the ore is harder to grind. Operating specifications were selected to achieve an optimum of capital and operating costs through use of the CEET program. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the hardness estimate of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design could then include a quantification of risk and determination of safety factors based on the accuracy of block hardness estimates and CEET model fitting.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional approach to plant design involves the extensive testing of a single large composite sample or a small number of composite samples that are reputed to represent the ore body. It is accepted that the tests used can accurately measure in the laboratory the grindability of the sample by a process representing that to be used in the plant. The size of equipment required to achieve a specified throughput and product size is then calculated from one of a variety of models that have been developed by metallurgists over years of trial and error. Since these tests and models are tried and tested, they are accepted as reasonably precise; however during the operation of the resulting plant the design is sometimes found to be inadequate. It is then suspected that the flaw in the design process lies in the samples not being sufficiently representative of the ore body, since using only a single or small number of composite samples does not recognize the variability of the hardness of the ore, nor does it allow for the lack of precision in the hardness value used in the design.This paper outlines a design procedure suited to an orebody that is described by a geostatistical analysis of a reasonably large number of small samples of drill core. The analysis required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the orebody, together with a mine plan of the blocks to be mined during the proposed life of the mine. The mill design was then made using the estimated hardness of each individual block with an allowance for annual fluctuations in the grindability of the ore. The geostatistical analysis assigned a statistical error to the hardness estimates of blocks and of each production year such that the final design included risk estimates and safety factors based on the possible errors that arise from having a limited amount of sample data (Kosick et al. 2002)."

"Significant advances in mining and metallurgical operations have occurred over the last two decades, to define ore bodies via geological mapping, mineralogical analyses, geostatistical models and resource reserve modeling. Metallurgical process measurement, controls and modeling have also significantly progressed, with advanced instrumentation, control software, data capture systems and simulation tools. This progress together with development of the science of geometallurgy has allowed geologists, mineralogists, miners and metallurgists to start working together to define geometallurgical ore units and link these to mine planning and projected metallurgical performance. However, application of full geometallurgical programs into existing mine-processing operations or into new “greenfield” projects has been slow. This is mainly due to higher costs, limited dedicated technical resources and little or no corporate leadership. Additionally, life-of-mine cash flow models, the “dollars”, have been largely driven by ore tonnage rates, pay-metal grades and fixed pay-metal percentage recoveries, with few or no geometallurgical parameters included.Here defined, the “electrons” represent intrinsic ore characteristics embracing chemical composition, mineralogy, gangue components and their associated fundamental metallurgical processing phenomena. With its ever expanding treasure chest of measurement and modeling tools, geometallurgy paints a much clearer picture of the “electrons” for the geologist and metallurgist. But to fully understand and realize the real net value of ores over the life of a mine, a comprehensive link of “electrons to the dollars” is essential. Intrinsic characteristics of geometallurgical ore units are by definition linked to their metallurgical processing, but importantly need also to be related to operating costs, capital requirements and revenue.This paper discusses this important linkage under topics of ore geology and mineralogy, metallurgical processing, waste disposal, environmental issues, metal refining, project engineering and lifeof- mine models. Topics are illustrated by multi-metal references and by case examples from gold ore heap leaching and manganese ore smelting projects. 1"

The mineralogy of residues formed during the pressure acid leaching of arid region nickel laterite ore varies according to the salinity of the process water, alkali cation additives and the overall acid loading. In fresh water, hematite is the main iron-bearing leach residue component, together with amorphous silica and hydronium or sodium alunite/jarosite [(H3O,Na)(Fe,Al)3(SO4)2(OH)6]. As the process water salinity increases, or as NH4+ or K salts are added, alunite/jarosite is the kinetically favoured iron-bearing phase accompanied by an increase in acid consumption. The alunite/jarosite appears as two XRD distinct phases with different Fe:Al molar ratios. In weakly saline water, iron-rich alunite/jarosite slowly transforms to hematite and an aluminium-rich alunite/jarosite together with the release of acid. The addition of potassium salts forms a more stable alunite/jarosite whilst the addition of ammonium salts leads to greater transformation of alunite/jarosite at 250°C. Weakly saline process water gives enhanced nickel recoveries, whilst strongly saline process water gives lower nickel recoveries but higher soluble iron because of chloro-complexation. SEM and microprobe analysis shows very little nickel is associated with the alunite/jarosite and hematite phases. Nickel losses to the residues are attributed to adsorption on amorphous silica and to a lesser extent on alunite/jarosite.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. "Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing technology is a decommissioning approach for inactive coal, uranium and base metal operations. To improve acid mine drainage water some fundamental aspects of wetland ecology and sediment microbiology are combined, to provide conditions to allow for biomineralization of the contaminants.This paper summarizes the first records of microbial alkalinity generation in acid mine drainage through the utilisation of the ARUM process. The process requires that the seepage is at pH 4.5 where sulphate reducers utilize sulphate to produce hydrogen sulphide, which in turn precipitates with metals. The pH increase is brought about by alkalinity generating microbes.The ARUM process has been successful in increasing the pH from 2.5 to 7.0. Flow through reactors operated in the laboratory continuously for more than 60 days have removed Ni from 13 mg/L to < 0.01 mg/L. Design parameters are being developed for low flow rates of 5 L/min in a test system receiving seepage from a tailings.1.0 INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage associated with mining wastes poses a significant environmental problem. Conventional means to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) use chemical treatment system. Ecological Engineering technology uses natural biological means to curtail and ameliorate AMD during mine operations and at the time of decommissioning. The premise underlying Ecological Engineering technology is that AMD is the result of a natural process enhanced by mining activities. Therefore, in nature, a process providing a natural balance to AMD has to exist, which, when assisted through appropriate means, can counteract the detrimental effects of AMD on the environment. This process is microbial alkalinity generation which is known to occur in wetlands, lake and ocean sediments (Baas Becling et al, 1960)."

"With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

"Rare earths adsorbed on clay minerals are easily recovered via ion exchange during leaching with inorganic monovalent salt solutions. The leaching efficiency of various salts at 0.5M and 25°C was investigated as a function of cation type and salt system (sulphates vs. chlorides). (NH4)2SO4 was identified as the lixiviant of choice and a procedure was established to investigate the influence of lixiviant concentration, temperature, pH and agitation on desorption kinetics and REE extraction levels. It was determined that the kinetics were fast and the optimum leaching conditions (for >80% total REE extraction) required pH below 5 and moderate temperatures (<50°C). INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) are at the core of numerous advanced applications due to their various uses in high strength permanent magnets, lasers, automotive catalytic converters, fiber optics/superconductors, and electronic devices (as phosphors in TVs and display screens for computers and cell phones). Because of the ongoing development of new technologies, there is an increased demand for REE in the international market, with emphasis on identifying new resources to insure an adequate supply for present and future use. World production of rare earths is dominated by China, the United States and Australia; however, in terms of resources, China dominates the world potential with reserves estimated to be over 90% of the total (Chen, 2011).The main commercially significant REE sources, as reviewed by O’Driscoll (1991) are bastnasite (carbonate) and monazite (phosphate) minerals, containing up to 70% wt. rare earth oxides (REO). In spite of being high grade, these ores are associated with elevated recovery costs due to difficulty in mining, separation and beneficiation. Moreover, aggressive conditions are required to solubilize the REE from the mineral, such as leaching with hot, concentrated acids or baking in 70% NaOH (Gupta & Krishnamurti, 2005)."

"Two 35 foot diameter enviro clear thickeners were tested in series as CCD units from June until October, 1978. Up to shutdown in July, we ran with automatic bed level control via the level probes and underflow pinch valves. Despite extensive efforts, we were unable to eliminate the surges created between the units by the opening and closing of the pinch valves. Early in July, the best rake speed and gap setting were determined. After shutdown, the enviro clears were run by manually controlling the pinch valves. These efforts were successful.A few mechanical problems were encountered while operating the thickeners. New units should incorporate more support for the drive coupling and a rubber feed seal. A few modifications of the instrumentation control scheme will be required before the units can be fully automated. A less sophisticated automatic flocculant addition system will accomplish the desired results. Control of the underflow withdrawal via the pinch valve should be investigated further. Our best results were obtained by keeping the feed volume to the No. 1 enviro clear constant. Surges were controlled by opening or closing both underflow valves proportionately.Capacity of the enviro clears is dependent of many variables. The ore treated during the test program was much finer than that reported on in R & D Project Report 76-02. Conditions were never steady enough to determine best flocculant dosage or addition point(s). The lowest soluble losses were obtained at very high wash rates. The underflow densities drop but the soluble losses also drop. Regression equations were developed in order to assess the effect of the various parameters. Within the range studied, these equations will predict the performance of enviro clear thickeners as CCD units on Elliot Lake ores. Our results show that the enviro clear thickeners are a viable alternative to the conventional CCD thickener."

"In 1974, Copperfields Mining Corporation and Soquem formed a new company, Niobec Inc, to bring the niobium deposit of the St-Honore carbonatite into production.St-Honore is located in the Saguenay area, near the cities of Chicoutimi and Arvida, and about one hundred and forty (140) miles north of Quebec. The discovery of the carbonatite complex was made in the fall of 1967 as a result of an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. The detailed exploration of the carbonatite indicated two niobium-bearing formations besides the original discovery of a rare earths zone. During the following years, the niobium formations were defined by diamond drilling and a decline was driven down to obtain adequate samples for metallurgical evaluation. In 1974, after seven hundred (700) bench scale tests, eleven (11) months of pilot plant 2nd a worldwide market research, a joint decision was made to initiate the development of a fifteen hundred (1500) T.P.D. mine and mill, under the management of Teck Corporation. The construction of the facilities were completed in early 1976 both on time and within budget. Niobec is now the only north american and the world second largest producer of Niobium concentrate.The process used at Niobec was developed from the pilot plant programs and later modified by the mill personnel. A simplified flowsheet for this process is shown on the slide. Briefly, run of mine ore is crushed to minus 5/8"" and fed to a rod mill, ball mill, and screens circuit where the ore is ground to 92% passing 65 mesh. The ore is deslimed in two stages of cycloning, and the final cyclone overflow at 85% minus 11 microns goes to waste. The cyclone underflow is conditioned prior to flotation of a carbonate-apatite concentrate. This concentrate is cleaned twice and then pumped to tails. The carbonate rougher and cleaner tails are cycloned in two stages to change the process; water and then sent to the pyrochlore rougher flotation. The rougher concentrate is cleaned five times. This is followed by pyrite flotation to remove sulfur, leaching with hydrochloric acid to remove phosphorus and dyed to less than 0.1% moisture before being sent to packaging."

Introduction In the following discussion, boiler-feed and mine waters will be considered from the point of view of the problems arising from the chemical nature of the mineral and gaseous impurities they contain. The theories underlying some of these problems will be reviewed for the purpose of getting a clearer concept of the problems themselves. Certain terms of a chemical nature, necessary to the discussion, will be explained on the assumption that they are not generally familiar to mining engineers. Finally, an attempt will be made to correlate theory and practice, with the abject of establishing certain limits to factors relevant to the problems, and to show that these limits are justified by practical experience. The general problems occasioned by the presence of mineral and gaseous impurities in boiler-feed and mine waters are: (1) Scale formation and corrosion in boiler systems. (2) Corrosion of mine pumps and pump fittings. These will be discussed separately. Boiler Scale Typical analyses of waters available for use in steam power-plants are given in the accompanying Table (Table I). All analytical data are expressed in grains per Imperial gallon. The bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium in the raw waters are shown as normal carbonates in the Table. Substances in the first five rows constitute the encrusting solids. All the waters listed in Table I would be classified as &apos;very good&apos; in the schedule of classification for boiler waters adopted by the American Association of Railway Chemists in 1887. In spite of this classification, however, the waters contain sufficient encrusting solids to cause serious scale trouble after prolonged evaporation.

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability.The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employees to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed.
