I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

During the year this Committee has had the benefit of the services of 75 Committee members, resident in the various States of the Union and in foreign countries, 10 of them representing us abroad. A number of plans for awakening the interest of possible new members have been carried out and the results have been very gratifying. The comparative results for 1913 and 1914 are as shown in the following table: 1913 1914 Applied for membership 630 946 Elected 450 1,006 Accepted election 433 921 When it is remembered that the depression following the outbreak of war in Europe has had more serious effect on the mining industry than almost any other, these results cannot be regarded as anything other than very encouraging. Because of the unsatisfactory conditions still prevailing it will doubtless be difficult to make even as good a showing next year. It is considered, however, that the function of this Committee is not merely to secure new members, having no regard for other than numbers; its true function is to exercise a proper supervision over the growth of the Institute, building it up in those fields in which it is weak, and directing its growth in such a way as to make it most effective in fulfilling its proper function as the national organization representative of the mining profession. The plan of inviting the alumni of the leading mining schools to apply for membership, which was initiated last year, was completed this year, with the exception of one or two schools, notably the University of California, from which we have not been able to obtain a list of alumni. With these exceptions we have now extended to the graduates of all the important mining schools of this country, and several of those abroad, an invitation to apply for membership in the Institute. It. is not thought desirable to repeat this invitation too frequently, and it is therefore suggested that this field be left alone for a year or two, when, if the mining industry experiences a marked revival of interest, it will be well to send out a second letter to the same men.

JESSE L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-I would like to ask Miss Erskine if down-draft has been used in any of the foundries where heavy fumes have to be removed, instead of the overhead draft.? L. -ERSKINE.-The system of overhead draft to remove heavy fumes has been very much more successful. The entire efforts of the New Jersey Department of Labor in regard to stabilizing conditions in the foundry are the result of the physical examination of the foundryman himself on first-hand information as to the prevalence of the minor ailments and the bad timekeeping that naturally accompanies them. These ailments are a factor in not only increasing the labor turnover but in increasing the percentage of bad work as well. The physical exertion of the foundryman himself is of course an important factor. In certain standard shops the amount of energy expended runs from 11 to 13 tons of foot-pounds of energy a day. In certain shops on piece work, I found a record of the energy expended per day to run as high as 22 tons. In one shop, during the war period, the management established a bonus system, and the men increased their output from 60 to 100 molds a day. The result was an increase of some 60 per cent. in output, and an increase of 400 per cent. in defective castings. The question of the physical exertion in the unsanitary foundries, of course, is very much complicated by other factors, for which reason the department has devoted a good deal of attention to estimating what is a reasonable exertion in a sanitary, well ventilated foundry. We have met certain physical difficulties in the brass foundries that the iron foundries did not have. All that information is available through our Bureau of Industrial Information. The question of the physical energy exerted by the molder is found to have a very distinct bearing on the question of contracts, for the possibility of increasing production is balanced by the extra overhead involved. JESSE L. JONES.-I would like to ask if any evidence has been noticed of carbon-monoxid poisoning among the employees of the foundries.

The serious shortage of eastern gas coal and of coke for gas-making in Illinois and adjoining states during the winter of 1917-1918 was emphasized at the meeting of the Illinois Gas Association, March, 1918. The seriousness of the situation was of concern not merely to private interests but to the general public, which consumes gas for heating, lighting, and for important industrial uses. Some relief was thought possible if central district coals from Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky could be used generally as a substitute for eastern coal and coke in the manufacture of retort gas and water-gas. Already a little Illinois and Indiana coal was being used under special circumstances in Illinois retort plants and successful experiments with mixtures of Illinois coal and eastern coal had been conducted at the Decatur retort-gas plant by F. K. Ovitz of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Illinois Mining Investigations, with the advice and cooperation of a committee of the Illinois Gas Association. Consequently, it seemed desirable to continue experiments with central district coal in gas retorts, and with coal as a substitute for coke in water-gas generators, and to give publicity to the results and technical assistance to companies desiring to use central district coal. Other matters, of national importance were the prospective shortage of toluol and of ammonia for the manufacture of explosives, and the possibility of encouraging recovery of additional amounts from some of the plants in central states that were not contributing these substances. Results of work done by the Gas Section, Illinois Mining Investigations, under the advice of the Technical Committee, were pushed to early publication until the signing of the armistice lessened the importance of speed as a war measure. The first two publications listed below were distributed by the Regional Director of the U. S. Fuel Administration, through the Bureau of Gas. By-products and Public Utilities. WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz.-(written discussion?).-The consensus of the discussion of the paper of Dr. Lanza indicates that the physical examination, while it is probably a good thing, is fought by the workingman, and that, because of this fact, it has been proved unsuccessful. The physical examination standing alone is worth but little, and could easily be made a subject both of ridicule and dissension unless the company having such examination shows its own good faith in promoting a thoroughly better health program. It is easily seen why a workman would resent his employer expecting him to be physically fit, if at the same time the employer provides un-healthful, unsanitary, working conditions, or if the town in which the employees are expected to live is dirty and unkempt. One mocks the other. The employer cannot say, "You must remain healthy so that I can get by with unhealthy conditions." But if working- conditions are as good as can be obtained to keep men well, the employer can ask his men to be in a healthy condition. A State examination and standard would have many difficulties, owing to the fact that a man would pass or would not pass the standard set, thus eliminating the discretion on the part of the employer in placing men whose physical condition might well permit working in one place and not another. Any physical examination that is run for the purpose of eliminating the physically unfit is unjust, both to the worker and to the nation as a whole; a State examination would make a distinct dividing line, whereas examination by the employer is conducted with a vision of the positions available. The workman's opposition to the physical examination comes from the fact that he has been taught to believe that it is an interference in his personal affairs, that he can be clean or dirty as he chooses, that he can he healthy or unhealthy, and that it is nobody's business but his own. The war has taught us, however, that the individual is no longer the unit and that all such propositions must be based on the greatest good for the greatest number.

INASMUCH as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing and operating. PROSPECTING Where ore is found it a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100 to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container and after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot. In pre-war times, the drilling costs ran from 75c to $1 per foot.

THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). This paper deals primarily with the advantages realized from the adoption of methods more suitable than those previously used. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company's furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania. History The first settlement in this region is reported to have been in 1735, and the magnetite ores were recognized immediately. The first furnace, built in 1741, began operation in 1743. During the Revolutionary War the output was chiefly used for making cannon balls, which, owing to the sympathies of the community, without doubt found their way into the hands of the British. This old furnace is still standing. Several important veins were soon developed, including the Martin, Strayley, McKinley, Adelaide, Welsh and Lanning. Mining was carried to a depth corresponding to the capacity of the pumps available. When these became inadequate, the workings were abandoned, and another vein was opened up. The Washington vein was probably discovered about 1850, and the first shaft started in 1854. In 1879, William H. Scranton made the first complete magnetic survey of the district and serious exploration of the deposit was begun. Rather indifferent success attended the earlier efforts of the many companies that attempted to mine and smelt the ore. In 1929 the property was leased by the Warren Foundry and Pipe Co. to the present operators, and the modification of practice then inaugurated is described in this paper. Geology These veins, like most eastern deposits of magnetite, are formed from, or are contemporaneous with, pegmatite intrusions into a gneissic country rock. To this are added some brief data on the early history of iron and steel, and a chapter on the activities of the American iron manufactures during the great war. The volume is profusely illustrated with portraits of men of note in the industry.

The oil-producing districts of Kansas comprise the northern portion of the so-called Mid-Continent field. As shown in the accompanying map, these districts are located chiefly in the southeastern and south central parts of the state. A considerable area in southeastern Kansas, extending northward nearly to Kansas City, has long been known as oil territory, the productive wells being distributed in patches or spots of irregular size and shape, the location of which is controlled by conditions of rock structure, and by the texture and porosity of the "sands" beneath the surface. In south central Kansas, there are a number of producing fields, the location of which appears to be controlled chiefly by well-defined structure. The most important districts are those in Butler County, especially that in the vicinity of El Dorado, which was for a time the most productive district in the entire Mid-Continent field. Recently new production of importance has been brought in the vicinity of Peabody and present development is active to the north across Marion County. Tests in the western parts of Kansas have not been successful in finding new petroleum fields. Histoby The first well drilled for petroleum, in Kansas, was near the town of Paola, Miami Co., about 40 mi. southwest of Kansas City, in the summer of 1860, only a few months after the completion of the famous "Colonel" Drake discovery well in Pennsylvania. Kansas appears to be the second state to engage in a serious attempt to find oil by drilling. The Civil War caused the temporary abandonment of attempts at oil development in the state. It was in the vicinity of Paola, where numerous oil seepages had been observed, that the first well producing oil in commercial quantities was drilled,' where also gas was first piped to the city for commercial use. In ten years the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna District have become impor-tant in the iron industry. By Dec. 31, 1923, 4,735,806 tons had been produced. Dur-ing the war, the low-phosphorus black ores were in demand; now the high-phosphorus low,-silica brown ores are favored. It is estimated that the reserves of these ores are ample for some time. A RISE in less than ten years from obscurity into great prominence economically, tersely summarizes the history and status of the Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores. The Cuyuna district produces and ships mostly high-phosphorus iron ore, but the annual production of manganiferous iron ore is increasing rapidly and productions from individual mines are becoming more regular and more dependable as to grades and tonnages. This ore bids fair to become, shortly, the principal product of the district and is responsible for the present economic prominence of this district. The iron ores of the district have been described, by the author and others, in many publications and will not be discussed here. Lately the manganiferous iron ores have been given some attention, but the range and variations of chemical composition of the ores, the principal physical characteristics of the ores and their deposits, the relative importance of the different ores and their possibilities in future developments, and the life of the respective reserves have not been discussed. It is impossible to give all of this information with the positiveness necessary for it to constitute a reliable guide for investment or even for future mine development. Each property and each party presents a special case and deserves critical consideration. We are dealing with special ores and always with a set of new conditions. Sufficient information of a general nature can be given, however, to indicate the reason for and the trend of the presently augmented developments in the district.

Water is a most remarkable substance. It is essential for life of all kinds. Not only can no one live without water, but man has always needed water for farming, raising animals, manufacturing, transportation, and recreation. When our country was young and inhabited by few people, the streams, rivers, and lakes were able to provide all the clean water needed by man and take away all the wastes created by man. However, with our growing population and our ever-increasing demand for goods and services, the public, industry, and government at all levels have become aware of the need to more efficiently manage the water resources of this nation. Coal has helped this nation to become the greatest industrial nation in the world. Coal has generated our electricity, run our railroads, and helped arm our nation during wartime. The result has been the highest standard of living in the world, a time of widespread prosperity, and a national defense potential that has delivered the hardware during four wars in this century. The use of water in coal mining is somewhat different than in most industries. With the exception of the small amount of water used in cleaning plants and for fire protection, most of the water encountered in coal mining operations is unwanted since it serves no useful purpose. In other words, it must be removed, otherwise it will interfere with mining operations by flooding. In the past, removing water from working areas of most mines was usually a fairly simple matter. Pumps with piping were installed at sumps or low spots in the mine and the water was pumped to the surface. Ditches were often used to drain the water by gravity to the outside or to main sumps for pump discharge. In either case, the water was allowed to flow into the nearest stream or river. With the continued development of low-grade porphyry copper deposits by open pit mining, substantial amounts of copper-bearing strip material have been accumulated in waste dumps adjacent to the many large mines. Since the end of World War II, the production of copper from leaching these copper-bearing wastes increased from approximately 4% of the total copper production to 10% by the early 1960's. Projected increases will probably raise this figure to 20 to 30% by the early 1970's. Furthermore, a gradual recognition of the economic feasibility of leaching mined-out areas is evident and will undoubtedly contribute additional production. Waste dumps in canyons and gulches on the periphery of open pit mines, mine stopes, caved areas, and abandoned open pits often contain substantial quantities of leachable rock ranging in concentration from 0.1 to 0.4% copper. Recent developments in the leaching of copper, mainly the recognition of bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals combined with better under- standing of the control of the salt content of the leach solutions, both by adjusting the pH and/or by hydrolysis, are resulting in a greatly expanded recovery of copper from these hitherto uneconomic mine rejects. 11.5-1. Mechanism of Leaching. Leaching processes for the extraction of metal values from mine ore or waste may be classified for convenience as either chemical leaching or bacterial leaching. Chemical leaching is considered to be the extraction of soluble salts by metathesis in acidic, basic, or neutral water solutions. The reactions involved may be evaluated by chemical thermodynamics. Bacterial leaching, although a chemical process, is dependent on biological catalysis and this is generally a much more complex process. This justifies its separate treatment in the application to leaching. Acid ferric sulfate solutions are commonly employed in the mining industry to leach valuable metals from metal sulfide ores. The leaching mechanism is a reduction-oxidation reaction in which minerals are oxidized at the expense of ferric sulfate. Such chemical leaching is profitable when

THE growing need of better methods for the recovery of zinc and other elements from complex sulfide ores has suggested an inquiry respecting a possible group separation of the elements by the aid of volatilization at more or less elevated temperatures. It 'is evident that if the zinc content of such ores can be completely separated, for instance, as pure oxide, by a volatilization 'method, there should be no difficulty in recovering the other elements by smelting and refining. Zinc burning" as applied to zinkiferous ores has advanced but little in practice since the invention of the wetherill grate-furnace process in 1852, as may be seen by reference to papers on the subject.' In other words the thermochemical reaction employed in effecting the volatilization of the zinc is essentially one of reduction by means of carbon, whether the ores treated contain their zinc in an oxidized form, or as the sulfide. The zinc vapors, liberated from the ores at a temperature above that required for the reduction of ZnO by C (about ,1100° C.) or for the volatilization of ZnS per se, (about' 1300°-1400° C.) are subsequently burned to ZnO or to ZnO + SOz, by contact with' atmospheric ,oxygen in the upper or posterior parts of the furnace chamber, or in a so-called "combustion chamber" after leaving the .furnace proper.

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. MANGANESE is one of the minerals which is principally consumed in countries other than those of origin. Nearly 85 per cent of the pro-duction is used by the United States, England, Germany and France, and roughly a third of the total is used by the United States alone. On the other hand, over 85 per cent of the world production comes from Brazil, Russia, India, the Gold Coast of Africa, and the Sinai Peninsula. It follows from this fact that practically all manganese moves across international boundaries in raw or alloy form, and much the larger part of this movement is for considerable distances and is ocean borne. There is no indication that any one of the principal consuming countries can develop even approximately adequate supplies of its own. Under abnormal war conditions, with high prices and changes in metal-lurgical methods, only 35 per cent of the needs of the United States was met from local sources, and under our recent tariff only 11 per cent. There are thousands of manganese deposits scattered about the world, but only a very few which can figure largely in supplying requirements on a modern scale. The known reserves, together with highly probable extensions and explora-tions now under way, indicate no shortage from a world standpoint for many decades to come. The production and marketing of manganese is going steadily into fewer and stronger hands. The steel in-dustry uses over 90 per cent of all the manganese mined, and is acquiring control of a considerable part of the production in all of the principal fields-the Germans in Nikopol, the English in India and Gold Coast, the Americans in Georgia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil. Some of the controlling companies are of international scope. Concentration of commercial control is a notable tendency. A natural consequence is the growing un-easiness of smaller consumers the world over about their ultimate supplies and desire to know more definitely how and where manganese supplies will be controlled in the future. The sources of supply are few enough to warrant the belief that more or less monopolistic ele-ments of control are not impossible.

This study was undertaken to redetermine the phase diagram of the lead molybdate-bismuth molyb-date salt system. A portion of this diagram was originally determined by Zambonini in 1920, and more recently by Beale. Thermal analysis and X-ray methods were used to define this system. The diagram was found to be a simple eutectic type with an eutectic at 11 mol pet lead molybdate and 634OC. A maximum solid solubility of 6 mol pet was found at the lead molybdate end of the diagram. Solid solubility at the bismuth molybdate end of' the diagram appeared to be quite limited and possibly nonexistent. These results generally agree with those of Beale, but differ significantly from those of Zambonini. MOLTEN salt systems have been vigorously investigated since World War 11. Much of this work has been performed as pure research; however, consideration has recently been given to their possible use as coolants in nuclear reactors. Because of this application and other potential applications, it was decided to reinvestigate the lead molybdate-bismuth molybdate phase diagram. This diagram was originally determined by Professor F. Zambonini of the University of Turin in 1920.' In 1961, a portion of this diagram was redetermined by Beale.2 With the quality equipment and high-purity materials available today, it was expected that discrepancies between the results of this present investigation and Zambonini's work would be obtained. This investigation was conducted in two parts. First, the general shape of the phase diagram was determined by cooling-curve analysis. Next, the primary solid-solution phase at the lead molybdate end of the diagram was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity lead molybdate, assaying 99.993 pet, and high-purity bismuth molybdate, assaying 99.989 pet, were employed during this investigation.* The results of a spectrographic analysis of the two salts are presented in Table I. THE MIDLANDS of England contain large areas of important oil lands, which, however, will not become of commercial importance for at least 5 years, because the ownership of the oil has become a political issue. In Great Britain, except in certain special areas, all minerals, except for gold and silver, belong to the surface owner. The leasing of minerals on the large estates is a very complicated business, as the family solicitors have many forms and formalities that must be observed. In the case of one of the large estates, the principal revenues of which for several hundred years have been from coal leases, the average time between the agreement on terms for a coal lease and the signing of the same has been 8 years. In 1916, one coal lease on this estate had been pending for 15 years, and was still unsigned, although the important terms had been agreed upon 15 years previously. Under war conditions, and considering the extreme importance that the production of petroleum in England would have had, such delays could not be tolerated. Most of the British landlords, relying on the almost, universal opinion of their own countrymen that there were no commercial deposits of petroleum in Great Britain, were prepared to give all their oil rights to the government, but they feared that such action might establish a precedent with respect to coal. For years the Labor Party and extreme radicals have protested against the payment of royalties to landlords on coal. The government, therefore, introduced a bill taking over all the oil rights and providing for the payment of a small royalty to the landlords, to safeguard the principle of compensation in case the coal mines should ever be nationalized. The provision of this bill, with respect to the payment of royalty to landlords, was defeated by a vote of 44 to 35 in a night session of the House of Commons on Oct. 25, 1917, when most of the members were absent, but when a group of labor members and extreme radicals were present. The resubmission of the point to the House of Commons was prevented by the labor members of the coalition government, who reminded the cabinet that the agreement

THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher
