LEHIGH UNIVERSITY On April 25, the Mining and Geological Society of Lehigh University held a meeting and elected. the following officers for the college year 1918-1919: C. S. SCHUBERT, President, C. After a short business meeting the Society was favored by three interesting and instructive talks. Mr. C. A. Bonine spoke on the "U. S. Geological Survey" and showed a number of beautiful lantern slides; Mr. R. Rosenbaum read a paper on "Geodes;" and Prof. B. L. Miller presented a brief discussion on "War Minerals." H. ALTHOUGH the actual output of about 89 million tons fell a little short of the hopes and more optimistic predictions of the beginning of 1943, the American iron and steel industry last year produced the record tonnage of its history. It was sufficient to catch up somewhat on the crucial needs for prosecution of the war though an excess of demand over available supply of steel still persists in most categories. It will be necessary during the coming year for the operators to continue to devote all of their efforts and ingenuity to obtaining the utmost tonnage both from existing units and from new facilities still to be brought into production.

Early production records are practically nonexistent, although the early geological survey reports mention a number of mines as being in operation at the dates of the field surveys. Reports of the Bureau of Statistics began in 1878, and as usual, the tonnages reported were undoubtedly small. County histories gave some production figures, but not many. The use of the Indiana block coal in blast furnaces furnished a substantial market for a number of years, which ended about the close of the Civil War. Some coke was made from Indiana coal for several years in the eighteen-forties, as is described in the chapter on Coke. (Chapter 35.)

The Mexican Government is building a mill at Churunibave in Sonora to handle lead, zinc, and copper ores. This development was sparked by increased mining activity in Mexico and Arizona caused by the Korean war. Pickands Mather, acting for a group of iron ore producers, is negotiating an agreement with Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd. to explore and perhaps lease iron ore property covering more than 1000 acres in the Steep Rock Lake area in Western Ontario. Plans call for the early commencement of an exploratory program. Other members of the group by Pickands Mather are Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, the Steel Co. of Canada, and Interlake Iron Corp.

A PROSPECTOR stood atop a Venezuelan mountain called El Florero just 25 years ago, and shouted to the world that he had found a large, rich new source of iron ore. But his words were lost in the big green South American jungles and besides, the world had more iron ore than it could handle. There were no crises in 1926, no major wars on the horizon, no worries about mineral supplies. In the U. S., the populace was "keeping cool with Coolidge," and the solid foundation of the economy-the steel industry-rested on a still firmer basis, the Lake Superior iron ores.

THE prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry.

The Esperanza mine of the Copper Division of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. is located in the Twin Buttes District, 32 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. Records of mining activity in this vicinity date back to the 1850's. The New Year's Eve mine, which was last active briefly during the years of World War II, made the first actual penetration into what is now Duval's Esperanza property. Duval's exploration department became interested in the Esperanza in the fall of 1954. The first test hole was started on May 8, 1955. Two years of intensive exploration work together with metallurgical studies developed the basis for the decision to establish an operation.

BRIDGMAN.-Owing to a misunderstanding, I did not see Dr. McAdam's and Dr. MacGregor's remarks on my paper on Flow and Fracture (Metals Technology, December 1944, Pp. 32-38), until after their publication. Both Dr. McAdam and Dr. MacGregor speak of my analysis for the stress distribution at the neck of a tension specimen as containing several assumptions; in particular, that the strain is uniform across the section of the neck, that there is no hoop tension at the periphery, and that the plasticity conditions of von Mises hold. As far as the mathematics goes, the situation is no different in this problem of plastic flow than in a conventional problem of elasticity. That solution is unique which satisfies the boundary conditions on the stresses, the stress equations of equilibrium, and in addition the constitutive equations connecting stress and strain in the elastic case, or a corresponding set of equations, of which the von Mises relations are a special form, in the plastic case. In the particular case of the necked tension specimen I have found that there is a solution satisfying the boundary conditions, the stress equations of equilibrium, and the von Mises plasticity conditions in which the strain is uniform across the section, and there is no hoop tension at the periphery. This is therefore the solution, and the uniformity of strain and vanishing of hoop tension at the periphery are to be described as discoveries, over which the operator has no control, rather than as assumptions. The only part of the solution that can properly be described as an assumption is the von Mises plasticity condition. With regard to this it is to be noted that the condition is needed only in a much weakened form, for the analysis uses the condition only at the neck, where the strain is approximately constant. Thus, in the extreme case referred to in a footnote of my paper (p. 37, Met. Tech. Dec. 1944) the actually measured strain across the section varies from 2.4 to 2.6. Obviously it is a much weaker assumption to postulate that the von Mises condition holds in the strain range 2.4 to 2.6 than to assume it to hold for the entire range of strain from o up to 2.6, which would be necessary if the solution applied to the entire tension specimen rather than to the immediate region of the neck only. Furthermore, it is to be commented that under the special conditions of this problem the von Mises condition becomes identical with the maximum shearing-stress criterion of plastic flow; this amounts also to a weakening of the restrictions imposed by the von Mises condition. Dr. MacGregor refers to actual experiments of his own in which the strain was found not to be uniform across the neck. It is to be emphasized, however, that these were experiments on bars of rectangular section, and that the nonuniformity established was a nonuniformity around the perimeter, not a nonuniformity from the surface toward the axis. My method of solution applies only to a circular cross section. It can be said that the solution that satisfies the boundary conditions, etc., would definitely not be expected to demand a uniform strain for noncircular sections. Solidification of Pb-Sn alloys ranging in composition from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb ws observed with polarized light. Lamellar structures were observed over a larger range of compositions in alloys containing excess tin than excess lead, as expected from constitutional supercooling. The occurrence of pools of supercooled liquid surrounded by lead is explained by the difficulty in nucleating tin. Cells and dendrites weve observed in tin-rich alloys. Evidence was found that the degenerate structure formed at low growth rates, the formation of faults, and abrupt changes in composition and structure can be attributed to non-steady-state growth. The apparent interface shape was observed to have deep grooves at the interphase boundaries. HUNT and Jackson have observed the shape of the interface during growth of organic eutectics. They observed the formation of lamellar faults and shape instabilities upon changes in growth rate. The lamellar structure in these organic eutectics was not restricted to the eutectic composition. Recent work by Mollard and Flemings2 indicated that Pb-Sn alloys from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb could be solidified with a lamellar or rodlike structure if a sufficiently steep temperature gradient was used at a slow growth rate. Observations of the solid liquid interface of the Pb-Sn eutectic were made by Davies3 using polarized light. Photographs were at too low a magnification to determine the interface shape, but he has concluded that tin was the leading phase. In the following experiments, solidification of a range of Pb-Sn alloys from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb was observed using polarized light, to determine the factors controlling stability of the lamellar structure. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. One hundred-gram ingots of alloys prepared from 99.999 pct pure Pb and Sn were cast into graphite molds under argon. The compositions of the alloys were 1.2, 6, 12, 26, 36, 46, and 56 at. pct Pb. Two-gram pieces were melted between two cover glass slides which were squeezed into a 1-mm separation. Samples were then observed under polarized light in a hot stage shown in Fig. 1. A long working distance objective designed for viewing at 500 times was used. Photography was made difficult by the lack of illumination and contrast at these high magnifications. By using an elliptical polarization compensator, as suggested by A. Holik, the contrast and illumination could be optimized. Photographs could be taken only at slow growth rates to avoid excessive interface motion during the 15-sec exposure used. The solidification rate was varied by increasing or decreasing the power to the heater. It was found that insulation was necessary to avoid undesired growth rate fluctuations. The temperature gradient, as measured with two thermocouples 1 cm apart, was 80" ± 20°C per cm during all the experiments reported here. The advantage of this procedure is in being able to observe solidification while it is occurring. However, the observations are restricted to the glass-metal surface and may be influenced by this surface. Also, one has no knowledge of the interior of the sample, in contrast to studies of the freezing of transparent organic eutectics.' Observations. THE following notes represent significant excerpts from a mass of records of experimental work done in the ore-dressing laboratory at the Columbia School of Mines during the years 1926 to 1928-inclusive. CLASSIFICATION OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general -headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils) c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agents. a. A method for quantifying frothing effect. b. Relation between frothing effect and chemical composition. III. Inorganic reagents. a. Methods of studying the effects of these reagents. b. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINS OF PRESENT-DAY FLOTATION PRACTICE The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.1 The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when' compared with those used today.

An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". Several different cement compositions were included in these tests, the results of which are shown in Table 1. In Tests 1 through 4 of Table 1, bond failure occurred at- the inter- .

BEFORE proceeding with the papers scheduled for the ore and foundry session*, the teller's report on the election of officers for the ensuing year was presented, a; follows: Chairman. G.C. F. MacKenzie; vice-chairmen, C.S. Robinson, J. T. MacKenzzie, C. E. Meissner; executive committee, A. L. Field, R. F. Harrington, E. F. Kenney lit. Waterhouse announced that the fall meeting will be devoted to alloy steel. This meeting will be held in Chicago the week of Sept. 22 in connection with the National Metal Congress. He also announced that oxygen in steel will be the central idea of the meeting which will be held in New York next February. The first paper, entitled "Sintering Limonitic Iron Ore at Ironton, Minn.," was presented by Perry G. Harrison (T. P. 284), the author. Sintering was first un¬dertaken in 1024 to treat Cuyuna range iron and manganiferous ores low in silica and high in moisture and containing objectionable qualities of fine... A Dwight-Lloyd machine was first installed. This machine was replaced by a larger one having a width of 72 in. The power cost was decreased from about $11.22 per ton of sinter on a 42-in. machine to about X0.14 for the 72-in. machine. The tons of sinter per man-shift was increased from 11.86 to 16.77. Improvements embodied in the larger plant reduced the cost of sintering to $0.41. The analyses of iron ore and manganiferous ore and the sinter produced from these materials was used to show the increase in value at the mine resulting from sintering. THERE are two conditions generally prevailing upon the earth-those within atmospheric influence, tending towards oxidation, and those away from atmospheric influence, tending towards reduction. Practically all mineral substances from mines of any depth are in a reducing condition. Since the cyanide process, in order to dissolve silver or gold, requires that the prevailing conditions under which it operates shall be oxidizing, and the materials usually acted upon being of a reducing character, it becomes necessary to supply oxygen to the solution carrying the cyanide. This oxygen is usually supplied through the medium of dissolved air in the solution, or through the medium of various chemical compounds, which upon combining with the solution or the ore give off a part of their oxygen. Strange as it may seem, practically all mineral substances are partly soluble in water, especially water carrying alkali or cyanide. The greater the surface exposed and the finer the material is ground, the greater will be the rate of dissolving of the reducing agents from the ore into the cyanide solution. In most cases, if the solution carrying the ore particles is agitated with air, the air will dissolve into the solution faster than will the reducing-agents; but in some cases the reducing-agents will dissolve more rapidly on account of easy solubility or greater surface exposed. It is a dissolving race between the oxygen from the air and the reducing-agents from the ore, and if the reducing-agents predominate, cyanide will not dissolve the gold from the ore. In many cases it will dissolve some of the gold, because in a mass of irregular shape some of the gold particles might be exposed upon the outside surface of a particle of rock;' but if the solution had to penetrate through cracks, the side-walls of which were lined with reducing-agent-

Wilkes-Barre Meeting, Julie, runs., THE ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead -in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture -of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead was kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification. of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is recovered directly as pig-lead, while the remainder passes partly into fume and partly into slag low enough in sulphur to be charged into the blast-furnace without further treatment. The results obtained have proved so satisfactory, both As to recovery and operating-expense, that one eminent metallurgist has predicted the universal use of the ore-hearth on non-argentiferous ores. The-ore-hearth, thus employed as an adjunct to a blast-furnace plant, is rather a desulphurizer than a smelting-furnace proper,-the chief object being to make a blue slag suitable for the cupola-furnace. Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author's knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?
