"Abstract Although one can think that it is very low the probability of a seism occurrence during the execution of an excavation in an urban lot protected by a diaphragm wall curtain, reality shows that whenever a seism occurs in an urban area several diaphragm walls will be affected by it. So it is advisable to consider the seismic action when designing a diaphragm wall curtain. The paper refers the main information about the seismic design of diaphragm walls according to the Eurocodes 7 and 8 and to the Portuguese Norms related to them (respectively NP EN 1997-1 2010 and NP EN 1998-5 2010), as the Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to adopt their own seismic parameters as the seismic risk is different in each country. A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

The use of soil nailing has grown steadily in the UK over the last 15 years and it has recently become more popular in the Republic of Ireland. This paper presents three soil nailing temporary works case histories where the technique has been used to support steep excavations in difficult ground conditions. It demonstrates the effectiveness of soil nailing when applied in appropriate conditions. Details of design methods and construction techniques are described and those aspects of soil nailing that will benefit from further study and development are identified.

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

"The gas dispersion measurement sensors and methodology developed by the mineral processing group at McGill University have to-date been employed at a number of plants in Canada, Australia, the U.S., South Africa and South America. In some cases the measurements have been directly linked with metallurgical performance while in others the gas dispersion surveys on their own have proved very useful in understanding the behaviour of the flotation cells. In addition to reviewing the current state of the gas dispersion measurement technology, the paper will present a series of case studies from the various plants and will show how this technology brings a remarkable new level of understanding to flotation behaviour. The influence of the bubble size distribution on recovery and grade are emphasized in the paper.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe advent of new sensors to characterize gas dispersion parameters in flotation cells is a development that is long overdue. While the chemistry of flotation has been studied since the early 1900’s, it is only now that the significance of bubble size distribution, gas rate and gas holdup can be meaningfully measured in-plant with robust and precise sensors. Early researchers, like T.A. Rickard (1916) recognized the importance of understanding the role of air and bubbles in flotation when he wrote in 1916 “we know that the key to the flotation process is to be found not in the oil, the acid, or the apparatus, but in the bubbles. The man who understands the mystery of a soap bubble has mastered the chief mystery of flotation”. In his 1999 review paper on The Froth Flotation Century D.W. Fuerstenau laments the fact that due to their “inert nature”, bubbles have never received their due attention from researchers who tended to focus on the chemical, physical, surface and colloidal aspects, rather than the physics of the process. It is perhaps fitting that now, 100 years after the inception of industrial flotation practice at Broken Hill, Australia, researchers and industry have turned their attention toward the importance of truly understanding the role of bubbles in flotation."

Keywords: Furnace, decommissioning, care and maintenance, re-start, funding, nickel Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) operates two nickel mines, and treats concentrates from these mines as well as toll concentrates from the region around its Bindura Smelter and Refinery (BSR) complex. At the smelter, concentrates of at least 5% nickel content are blended and dried to 4% moisture in a coal-fired rotary kiln. Matte smelting of concentrate is carried out in a six-in-line electric arc furnace, where the furnace slag is granulated and discarded. Furnace matte is transferred via ladles into Peirce-Smith converters, where, after granulation, a leach alloy containing 68%Ni, 20%Cu, and 6%S is produced. Converter slag is recycled via the matte-smelting furnace. The onset of the global economic recession towards the end of 2008 resulted in a collapse of metal prices, worsening the local situation that was already marred by unfavourable macro-economic conditions in Zimbabwe. As a result, BNC mines were put on care and maintenance in November 2008, followed by Bindura Smelter and Refinery in February and March 2009 respectively. The business environment has since changed, and BNC is getting ready to re-start the plant. This paper describes the decommissioning of the Bindura furnace, asset preservation during the care and maintenance programme in the past two years, and preparation for starting up of the Bindura smelter in the near future.

Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomic. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. The operating work index of this circuit varied from 5.2 kWh/t to 44 kWh/t over this 5 year period. The full suite of energy curves"

The alluvial deposits of the Pacific Northwest have been investigated and worked with varying degrees of intensity since about the middle of the 19th century. Earlier efforts, of course, were centered about the placer-gold content of the deposits; later, the Oregon beach sands were exploited for their chrome content, and, still more recently, deposits in Idaho were worked for their content of monazite, a rare-earth mineral which also contains significant quantities of thorium. The composition of alluvial deposits seems to depend mainly upon the nature of the source rock from which the detrital material was derived and upon the resistance of the individual mineral grains to the agencies of weathering and transportation. The processes of crushing and concentration used in ore dressing are applied in a leisurely but nonetheless effective manner when exposed rock masses are eroded by natural forces. Weathering effects a continuous disintegration and chemical decomposition, wherein resistant minerals are set free as individual grains and new minerals are formed. Erosion carries these detrital products down the slopes into natural waterways, where a mechanical separation of heavy particles from light is accomplished by the running water. The accumulation of such resistant, heavy particles through the ages has resulted in formation of the black-sand deposits. In addition to the associated gangue minerals, heavy sand deposits in the Pacific Northwest may contain the following constituents of possible economic value: Gold, platinum, chromite, ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, monazite, columbite-tantalite, and radioactive blacks.
