The coal company Minerales Monclova, S.A. (MIMOSA), the owner of the Mimosa R Line, is a subsidiary company of Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., the largest steel plant in Mexico with an annual capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of steel ingots. The raw material's which are used in the steel plant are provided by the following companies: La Perla Minas de Fierro, S.A., iron ore; Cia. Minera de Guadalupe, S.A., Cia. Carbonera La Sauceda, S.A. Cia. Minera La Florida, S.A., and Minerales Monclova, S.A., which provide the coal used for coke, and altogether constitute the industrial group AHMSA. The coal property of Minerales Monclova, S.A. is located in the Sabinas coal area in the northwestern part of the Sabinas basin.

The Crestmore Limestone Mine of Riverside Cement Company in Riverside, California is situated within 1.6 km of the Santa Ana River. It is an alluvium covered deposit with a massive quartz manzonite intrustion separating the upper and lower limestone beds which dip from 30° to 50°. The highly fractured upper bed contacting the Santa Ana alluvium contains many unique water inflow problems which vary, from multiple high pressure 19 liters per minute inflows up to 3,000 liters per minute to 11,000 liters per minute inflows-contacted by development mining in April 1983. A case history of the successful grouting of these inflows and the continual grouting procedures in advance of present mining with empirical' results are discussed.

Let's review the economic factors in mill design. Talking about engineering economics in mill design reminds me of an old' saying "There are several ways to handle women but nobody knows what they are." I'm sure that the same economic factors do not apply to each of our mill designs, but for the sake of emphasis, it is well to review a few of them. They are so simple that we are apt to feel they are not important. Other speakers today are talking about the engineering factors of mill design, but I'm asking the question "Have we checked the economic factors involved in these designs? Have we checked the obvious? Many great discoveries have resulted from analysis of the things that appeared to be obvious all the time. What are some of these economic factors? Perhaps the most basic one is simply the value of minerals in place if minerals have value in the ground, they have value only because many important and different considerations add up to the probability that the minerals can be mined, beneficiated and disposed of profitably. The size formation and quality of the ore body, the distance from market, and the transportation available to the market area, depreciation rates, taxes, and the ownership interests involved are but some of the factors that must dovetail into the answer of profit, an answer prerequisite to hoped-for financing.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration, in cooperation with IMC Global Operations, Inc., conducted a joint study to determine the effectiveness of the technology currently in use at the mine to control diesel particulate exposures. IMC Global operates an underground potash mine using diesel-powered equipment to extract minerals. IMC uses a variety of technologies to control worker exposures to diesel particulate. These technologies include: ventilation, low sulfur fuel, oxidation catalytic converters (OCC), maintenance and work practices. The study was conducted over a two-week period, two shifts per day. During the first week (six shifts), baseline data on exposures and diesel particulate emissions were obtained. New OCC's were installed over the weekend on all equipment on the test section. During the second week (six shifts), data were collected to assess the effectiveness of the new OCC devices. In addition to exposure and diesel particulate emissions data, mine ventilation, engine exhaust temperatures and mine operational data were obtained. The primary means of determining diesel particulate concentrations was the respirable combustible dust (RCD) method. Gas concentrations carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), and nitrogen dioxide (NO,) were measured using passive dosimeter badges and gas bottles. Results of measurements of diesel particulate, gases, and air- flows were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of airflow and oxidation catalytic converters for controlling diesel particulate exposures. The use of oxidation catalytic converters resulted in reductions of both workers' exposures and diesel emissions.

The results obtained for the selective flocculation or flotation of natural ores do not usually agree with the corresponding properties of the constituent minerals when present alone. This is mainly due to the presence of dissolved mineral species which can interact in many ways with other components in the system and alter their behavior. In this paper, the effect of dissolved species on the flocculation and electrokinetic properties of sulfide minerals is disscussed. Dissolved Fe, Cu and Ni species are found to affect the properties of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite and covellite in certain pH range. These effects are interpreted in terms of species adsorption leading to activation or depression of reagents, surface precipitation and complexation of species, etc.

At nuclear facilities, three types of radioactive waste must be managed: (1) high-level liquid waste containing fission products from the chemical separation of irradiated uranium, (2) low-level condensates from the concentration of the high-level waste, and (3) dry solids such as obsolete process equipment, spent ion exchange resins, and irradiated metal scrap. The geological and environmental characteristics of a site are important considerations in planning the waste management program. At the Savannah River Plant, low-level liquids and dry solids are safely and economically placed in the soil where the geologic and hydrologic conditions are favorable. Within the general area where the waste originates, studies are made to locate seepage basins and burial grounds in the most favorable sites: (1) soils should have a high ion exchange capacity and moderate to low permeability, (2) the water table should be deep, and (3) burial sites should be relatively distant from the nearest flowing stream.

The word "research" has been used in the title of my presentation somewhat against my better judgement. There are many definitions of the word. But the one I like best comes from Webster's New World Dictionary. It reads: "Careful, systematic, patient study and investigation in some field of knowledge, undertaken to discover or establish facts or principles. ..." I like that. In only 9 words, the definition conveys to me the very essence of what should be going on either in or for the coal industry. Unfortunately, not enough coal-related research is going on. And much of what is being done is, in my view, not really as effective as it might be.

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.

Approximately 200 samples of iron ores and other iron- bearing materials have been tested for amenability to treatment by the R-N process in bench scale laboratory work. Twelve large lots, ranging in size from 900 net tons to 18,500 net tons, but generally 3,000 to 4,000 tons each, have been processed in the R-N demonstration plant. The ores tested in the demonstration plant ranged from 27 to 70 percent iron content and gave excellent results. (1) The demonstration plant has a nominal daily capacity of 50 tons of high quality iron briquettes and has now operated for over five years. A continuing program of process improvement is carried on between demonstration on potential licenses ores. An important development is the complete elimination of any secondary products which, in the past (2,3,4,5), resulted from treatment of certain low-grade ores.

The demand for thermal coal both nationally and internationally is projected to increase rapidly. The marketability of high ETU thermal coal produced in the USA is, however, limited by its high sulfur content. Fortunately, over 70 percent of the sulfur exists in pyritic form. The research conducted at Southern Illinois University indicates that over 90 percent of the pyrite can be removed by simple devices such as concentrating tables, cyclones, or froth flotation cells and the desulfurized coal can be blended with low sulfur western coal to produce EPA compliance coal. Thus, both the low BTU western coal and the high sulfur midwestern coal can be rendered competitive in the utility markets, here and abroad due to improved utilization.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

Profitable marketing of most minerals is dependent upon the total delivered cost to the user. Transportation costs are often greater than the value of the mineral f.o.b. the mine or processing facility. In some cases, transportation costs are three to five times the mineral cost. For many years, transportation costs were controlled by a complex system involving the transportation companies and supervised by regulatory agencies. This paper will deal with the effects of deregulation on rail costs and outline the major changes in transportation economics.

SALA MAGNETICS, INC. is now operating a 15 tph continuous high gradient magnetic separator, the SALA-HGMS® Mark III Carousel, as part of a complete mineral processing pilot plant installed at Sala's Cambridge headquarters. The Mark III can generate a maximum magnetic field of 18 kG making it possible to process even weakly magnetic, finely ground ores and ore tailings on a continuous basis at the performance level achieved in Sala's cyclic high gradient magnetic separators. Test results on iron ores, clay, and decoppering of molybdenum concentrate will be discussed. Bench scale tests have been performed on all of these materials using the SALA-HGMS® Model 10-15-20 Cyclic Magnetic Separator. A direct correlation may be made between cyclic and carousel results. Sala's Mark III Carousel high gradient magnetic separator is designed to permit scale-up to machines capable of processing two hundred (200) tons of ore per hour and more.

Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

This paper presents the design and installation of an underground ventilation remote monitoring and control system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. This facility is designed to demonstrate safe underground disposal of U.S. defense generated transuranic nuclear waste. To improve the operability of the ventilation system, an underground remote monitoring and control system was designed and installed. The system consists of 15 air velocity sensors and 8 differential pressure sensors strategically located throughout the underground facility providing real-time data regarding the status of the ventilation system. In addition, a control system was installed on the main underground air regulators. The regulator control system gives indication of the regulator position and can be controlled either locally or remotely. The sensor output is displayed locally and at a central surface location through the site-wide Central Monitoring System (CMS). The CMS operator can review all sensor data and can remotely operate the main underground regulators. Furthermore, the Virtual Address Extension (VAX) network allows the ventilation engineer to retrieve real-time ventilation data on his personal computer located in his workstation. This paper describes the types of sensors selected, the installation of the instrumentation, and the initial operation of the remote monitoring system.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). There are a number of air classifiers manufactured throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The classifiers manufactured by Alpine, A. G. of Augsburg, Germany, are unique in their abilities. It is this uniqueness that I wish to delve into and in this respect we will limit this discussion primarily to the classifiers as manufactured by Alpine. It has been reported in the past that these classifiers were introduced into the. United States in the late 50's. Until the introduction of the Alpine Classifiers, air classification seldom produced a satisfactory fractionation of a product below 45 microns (325 mesh) or above approximately 22 mesh. It has been a common practice to classify fine materials which used water as a carrier medium The use of centrifuges are today producing thousands of tons of finely partitive powders in the very small particle size range. The use of centrifuges in connection with wet grinding mills has increased the rates of production of these mills considerably.

Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.
