This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. The US17 Spring/Fishburne Drainage Improvements Project utilizes a stormwater conveyance tunnel system of approximately 8,250 LF. The tunnel system includes two intersecting tunnels of differing diameter at a 40-degree angle. The intersection was constructed in soft-ground conditions. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical concerns, initial ground support, and final lining construction. The tunnels utilized two soft-ground TBMs excavated at 15 ft and 11 ft with ribs & lagging initial support. The final lining consisted of unreinforced and reinforced cast-in-place concrete with polymer fibers. Concrete final lining was successfully completed in March 2020.

Experiments conducted with a 75-mm-diem hydroryclone have shown it is possible to obtain an iron ore concentrate containing 60% Fe. 2.65% SiO2, and 4.0% Al2O3 from Barsua iron-ore washing-plant slimes. About 60% of the iron values are recovered from slimes containing approximately 49% Fe, 8.9% A1203 and 11% SiO2. The obtained products can be used in the sinter feed for iron and steel making. The key to achieving process success lies in establishing the correct cut point (d50) of the hydrocyclone through the manipulation of operating and design variables, such as spigot and vortex finder diameter, solids concentration and operating pressure. The cyclone efficiency is represented by the partition curve. The cyclone performance, evaluated mathematically from the reduced efficiency curve, is represented by the equation Y = 100[1 -exp(-axb)], where: •X = did 50, •Y = corrected of efficiency (%) and •a and b are constants.

The installed world steel capacity remains 20% above the present world steel demand. Energy costs have risen enormously in recent years, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The role of the sinter plant is becoming more exacting as it becomes vital to minimize energy consumption. Continuous grate sintering, although pioneered in the United States, has always been the second grade burden preparation route, due to the predominance of easily up- graded ores which were more readily agglomerated by pelletizing. To achieve blast furnace performance up to best world standards, sinter of consistent high quality must be produced with virtually no atmospheric pollution. The plants must be capable of achieving this demanding level of quality whilst utilizing high proportions of revert materials, iron ore concentrates and fluxes . However, with the present difficult economic climate in the iron and steel industry, the economic production of sinter and ultimately steel is becoming increasingly important. The iron and steel industry is looking closely at costs and is identifying the need for sinter plants that will cope with a wide range of sintering materials to give the cheapest blend at varying output levels dependent upon demand. In order to meet these requirements, sinter plant builders are designing plants with particular attention on flexibility.

In Louisiana salt mines a sudden erruption or outburst of salt and gas occurs when the heading face approaches a pressure pocket (altered salt with high pressure gas). The resulting cavity is semi-ellipsoidal, reaching lengths of 50m or more. Potential risks from the outbursts include loss of life and equipment. A gas outburst is initiated by "disking" of the salt in biaxial compression and propagates by spalling of the cavity walls and further disking. The outburst is terminated by a combination of dilatancy hardening, increase in stress along the cavity axis, and enlargement to boundaries of the pressure pocket.

Mexico, that for various years held the second place among the elemental sulphur producers in the world, now occupies the fourth position. Nevertheless, taking advantage of the recent increase in the international prices of the metalloid, it is expected that Mexico recovers its traditional position producing, for the first time, over two million tons of sulphur during 1974. Drawing from material stockpiled during the last years sales are expected to reach 2.5 million tons, at excellent prices in the foreign markets, but not so in the domestic ones where prices have remained practically static since 1955, in spite of substantial escalation of production costs. Of the two sources of elemental sulphur in Mexico, the frasch process extraction from the salt domes of the Tehuantepec isthmus where the most important reserves are located - is the one that shall have an important increment. An increase of production of lesser magnitude is expected from sour gas, since sulphur recovery plants wilI go on stream toward the end of the year in the new oil fields recently located in the State of Chiapas. Two Mexican corporations are expanding and improving rational Frasch extraction operations. Together with Petroleos Mexicanos' sulphur recovery from sour gas it is estimated that production during 1975 shall reach 2.5 million tons and, consequently, supply the domestic market and generate an important sum of foreign currencies.

Raw materials used by the Flat Glass Industry are known in the Industrial Minerals geology sector as Specialty Products. These pro- ducts must meet specification limits usually not the same for all glass manufacturers. Evolving new glass compositions will require mineral concentrates of consistent purity being produced within economic limits that will assure market viability of the resulting glass product. The amount of success the Flat Glass Industry will achieve by developing and maintaining domestic production centers will be determined by many economic factors which affect the costs of doing business. Technological developments by mineral processors must continue in order to achieve more efficient production of high quality glassmaking raw materials.

Arapiraca ore deposit has a mixed chalcopyritelbornite mineralogy, with a copper head grade of 0.7%. The reserve size does no allow profitable exploration by grinding/flotation. The technical feasibility of exploring the reserve by heap leaching was studied. Preliminary agitation tests indicated 85% copper recovery. To simulate heap leaching, column tests were performed. The tests included different ore types and acid addition levels. Operating at pH range 1.6-1.8, 67% copper extraction was achieved. Also, it was found an empirical correlation between the operation pH range, copper extraction and acid consumption.

In the last decade public awareness of the need for pollution abatement has increased greatly. The concern that had been previously shared by local and state conservation groups has spread to create a national concern for preservation of our non-polluted environmental assets and regeneration of those that have been wasted. Because other current matters such as inflation, civil rights,' tax reform and the Vietnam situation have been the object of most national concern, an extremely strong national pressure base has not been brought to bear on the pollution control crisis. Yes, the word is crisis, for in many areas pollution is of critical concern. One has only to look at Lake Erie, the skies about our major urban areas and many of our major rivers and streams to see this crisis These are not situations that can be corrected overnight. We are faced with two basic problems that should be attacked simultaneously: (1) Cleaning up the present sources of pollution and (2) preventing the generation of new pollution sources. What approach should be taken? As in any engineering problem, the limits must be well defined before a final solution is attempted. Pollution must be defined on a national basis. This means that basic Federal legislation and control is necessary. This should reduce any competitive advantage that can presently be gained by movement of operations from one state or geographical area to another on the basis of differences in local legislation .and enforcement. By giving real numbers as guidelines, selective enforcement can be avoided. As a starting point, for a definition of pollution let us use the following - "Any change in the environment occurring from other than natural causes." This definition may not be satisfactory to all but surely we must be somewhat dramatic in our statements to counteract the present prevailing philosophy. Our statement of this philosophy - "At what level of pollution can we afford to operate?" On the basis of our general definition we would like to state what we feel should be the philosophical statement - "How little can we change our physical environment as a result of operations?"

To date VMD have designed, built and supplied nine autoclaves to various mining companies in Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. Initially, completely fabricated and lead lined units were shipped. The logistics of Placer Dome's Porgera PNG Project necessitated fabricating and lead lining each autoclave in five sections for transportation to site, each piece weighing approximately 30.5 tonnes. Support equipment such as turning rolls, automatic and manual welding machines had to be set up on site to facilitate assembly of these units which was a challenge in planning. This on site erection programme was completed in three months.

Field testing of GPS mining applications has confirmed the technical and operational viability of GPS for precise, centimeter-level positioning in harsh taconite environments. GPS hardware has provided consistent availability exceeding 90%, with precision in certain applications of ± 0.07 foot at 95% confidence levels. Despite these technical successes though, challenges persist in achieving effective GPS integration. These challenges include the acceptance of new job tasks by mine personnel, the capacity of typical mine data communications infrastructure and the need to design GPS interfaces for new mining equipment.

Many factors must be considered when designing a heap leach pad. Geotechnical properties of the ore, can and will affect how well an ore leaches, the solution recovery, stability of the heap, and settlement. As a heap is stacked some of these properties will change due to the increased load. In order to properly design a heap these properties should be determined beforehand so that the heap performs as intended.

The cost of transportation of industrial minerals is frequently higher than the cost of the product. Where a minc, industrial mineral plant. or customer is served by a single railroad, that single railroad, because of lack of competition, may increase rates and/or provide inadequate service so that the economics of that mine, plant or customer are adversely affected, or so that the level of service precludes satisfactory performance. Transloading of industrial minerals from rail-to-truck or truck-to-rail in order to improve economics and sales of product is not new. However, transloading to reduce freight costs or improve inadequate service caused by a lack of competition in the rail industry, is a relatively new concept brought on by the recent mergers of many of the main line railroads, both in the eastern and western United States. For example, with completion of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific mergers, the western United States has only two mainline railroads. The industrial mineral producer, in order to reduce the cost of transportation, or increase the level of service, must evaluate potential transloading opportunities in light of higher prices and reduced service brought on by reduced railroad competition.

Grinding mills, both autogenous and ball can be powered by several basic means. The three methods used today are girth gear drives, gearless drives and trunnion coupled reducers. This paper will focus on the first of these methods -girth gear drives. The girth gear drive has been used on thousands of mills which continue to operate successfully. These drives are noted for their simplicity and low cost. In the past, the horsepower capacity of girth gears has been slow to keep up with the horsepower increase required by the mill builders, particularly since the advent of the SAG mill. Gear manufacturers had capacity for 2000 HP mills in the 1950's, 5000 HP in the 1960's and 6500 horsepower in the 1970's. The 70's and 80's brought dual pinion girth gear drives which allowed mill sizes beyond 10,000 horsepower. Gear manufactures who could not keep up with the pace of the horsepower demands and the quality and reliability demanded by the mill builders and users have fallen by the wayside.

The potential production of cobalt from nickel sulfide deposits in Canada, from nickel laterite deposits in the Pacific Islands, and from the copper deposits of Zaire and Zambia will be a function of the cost of recovery of the primary nickel and copper products. This cost of production varies significantly for these deposits and is related to the differences in the cost of labor, energy, and supplies, to production technology, and to the grade and recovery of nickel, copper, and cobalt. This Bureau of Mines paper investigates these cost and technology differences as they relate to the cost competitiveness of the deposits in Canada, Zambia, Zaire, and the Pacific Islands.

Technical service is assuming an increasingly important role in the sale of asbestos fibre,, Manufacturers are examining raw materials more closely than ever before in order to, obtain the most efficient usage in their processes. Asbestos is one of the more difficult materials to evaluate and consequently has been are of the last to be subjected to evaluation. The main problem encountered in the evaluation of asbestos fibre is that minor differences in grade and texture are not shown up by chemical analysis, and are identified only by specialized physical analyses or actual production use. However, such minor differences become more critical as manufacturing processes are made more efficient, and many purchasing agents and plant chemists are applying a closer scrutiny to their supply of raw asbestos fibre. Many processes have been formulated around grades and qualities of asbestos fibre, which were standard some time ago, but which may now be subject to modification and improvement.

Introduction This chapter contains brief discussions of various environmental protection requirements that relate to underground mining operations. Environmental disturbances at an underground mining operation can result from subsidence; water discharges; waste dumps; construction and operation of access roads and utility lines; construction and operation of surface facilities such as maintenance shops, bathhouses, and storage yards; and emanation of dust and noise from surface crushers. Construction and operation of a concentrator or washing plant may result in the emission of air pollutants, the discharge of water pollutants, the creation of noise, and disturbance of the surface. Tailings ponds can be the source of fugitive dust.1 This chapter is not intended to provide a detailed discussion and analysis of laws and regulations dealing with environmental protection. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with a basic awareness of the existence and nature of such laws and regulations, as well as the procedural requirements that must be followed in complying with them. The body of law relating to environmental protection has grow" very rapidly and should continue to do to for some time. Because many of the laws have been enacted recently, numerous court decisions are being rendered to resolve disputes over their interpretation. Hence, the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes and regulations, and new case law. Rules and regulations pertaining to environmental protection are implemented at all governmental levels. The most widely known laws are those enacted by the federal government that have nationwide applicability. However, separate requirements exist in each state, county, and municipality. Because of their general applicability, federal laws are discussed most extensively in this chapter. Ownership of the property is the most significant factor considered in ascertaining what rules govern the conduct of an operation thereon. If the land is held under lease, reference to the lease terms must be made in the first instance to determine what obligations must be met in order to prevent default and possible loss of the property. If the land is held under a lease from the federal government, the operator is subject not only to compliance with the lease terms, but also to a large body of laws and administrative regulations that pertain generally to the conduct of mining operations on land held under federal leases. Although operations on unpatented mining claims, the legal title to which remains in the federal government, are not subject to the same rules and regulations that are applicable to operations conducted pursuant to federal leases or permits, they soon will be governed by a special set of regulations that provide for protection of surface resource.2 Operations conducted on lands leased from a state usually are subject to numerous environmental protection requirements specified in the lease terms, in addition to rules and regulations promulgated by the state agency having jurisdiction over mining on state lands. Operations conducted on privately held lands are subject to fewer such requirements. Leases from private parties sometimes have environmental protection and reclamation requirements written into them, but generally to a far lesser extent than governmental leases. Operations conducted on properties owned by the operator are subject only to those laws and regulations that have general applicability without regard to land ownership. COAL SURFACE MINING CONTROL AND RECLAMATION ACT OF 1977 Introduction On Aug. 3, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was signed into law.3 It governs coal-mine operations on private lands, as well as on public lands. The Act is pervasive in its scope and is extremely long and complex. The basic purpose of the Act is to control and minimize the environmental effects of surface coal mining. Surface coal-mining operations are defined as activities conducted on the surface of lands in connection with a surface coal mine and surface impacts incident to an underground coal mine.4 The Act is administered by the Secretary of the Interior through a new agency named the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.5 The Act contains detailed environmental protection standards and reclamation requirements, and it establishes a permit system for all surface coal-mining operations. Mining in certain areas and under ceri-in conditions is restricted or prohibited, and a mechanism for enforcement by the states is provided. Stiff penalties are provided in the event of noncompliance. Implementation Schedule Nonfederal Lands: As required by Section 501 of the Act, interim regulations setting mining and reclamation performance standards based on and incorporating standards set out in Section 502(c) were adopted effective Dec. 13, 1977.6 They will. be incorporated as amendments to Chapter VII of Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations. Permanent regulatory procedures for surface coal-mining and reclamation operations performance standards, which were directed to be promulgated by Aug. 3, 1978, were published in proposed form on Sept. 10, 1978. 7 They govern surface coal-mining operations in any state until a permanent state or federal program is adopted. Surface mining has been used primarily where deposits of minerals were exposed or close to the surface. Surface mining can, therefore, be considered the oldest branch of mining. As the most accessible deposits became uneconomical because of the lack of suitable high capacity conveying systems, deep mining took its place. Only in the twentieth century was this trend reversed as high capacity production and conveying systems were developed. This rapid development was triggered by the steadily increasing demand for raw materials and fossil fuels, as well as by the ever increasing ratio between overburden and deposits.
