The creation of automatic methane concentration control systems presupposes the use, as a control factor, of the air rates in workings and in mine as a whole. These systems present a complicated set of computers and software, including as major components the following - systems for detecting methane concentration and air rate; - telemechanics systems; - programs and means of data processing; - programs and means of air rate control in workings and main fan capacity control. The paper analyses the experience of development and exploitation of automatic methane control system in gassy mines of the USSR Donetz coal basin. Much attention is given to the study of technological factors influence upon aerogasdynamic process using automatic methane control system.

12.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the tools required to design leach operations to minimize spillage from leach pads and ponds and erosion damage during flood events or prolonged wet periods. It outlines methods used to design for prolonged dry periods when water shortage can be a problem. Seasonal operational aspects such as winter shutdown and coping with spring snowmelt periods are also discussed. General criteria useful when designing pregnant and barren solution ponds are also outlined. The aim of these notes is to provide designers and operators with a simp1ified approach to developing design parameters which make effective surface water management easy to achieve without resorting to extensive or elaborate analyses. Section 12.2 briefly outlines the types of problems associated with wet climates and floods, as well as dry periods. Determination of flood design parameters is discussed in Section 12.3. Circuit water balance and pond sizing are outlined in Section 12.4. Pond design considerations are included in Section 12.5. Worked examples are included in Section 12.6. 12.2 RAINFALL/RUNOFF PROCESSES There are two types of rainfall-runoff processes that are important when designing heap leach facilities. The first of- these is the short-term, intense rainfall or snowmelt events that occur over a period of a few minutes or hours, causing flooding that can lead to erosion damage and overtopping of ponds and containment dikes. Specific problems that can manifest themselves during these events include: • Washout of access roads; • Damage to containment dikes; • Flood water contamination of circuit water; • Damage to process water ponds by perimeter erosion or overtopping and erosion; • Loss of process circuit fluid due to breaks in containment dikes or process water ponds; and • Erosion of leach pile and consequent sediment contamination of process fluid. Other types of rainfall -runoff processes that could cause problems are the long-term-(generally months-long) wet or dry periods. Extended wet periods

Continuous miners (CM) are the most popular underground mining machinery in soft rock mining, playing a dominant role in the production of minerals ranging from coal to evaporites while finding increasing use in salt and potash mines. Along with the ongoing technological advancements in the mining industry and the underground equipment, new generation of CMs offer several new features that are designed to enhance their operational capabilities and production rate. In addition to new bits and bit holders, one of the areas of improvement is the cutterhead design through computer modeling and simulation based on the full scale cutting tests. This paper discusses the state-of the-art CM technology and development of the computer models for design analysis and performance estimation of CMs. The general approach used in the modeling, along with the results of field trials for several projects will be presented.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. The environmentally sound processing of metal-bearing chloride solutions plays a key role in the extraction, plating, recycling, finishing and surface preparation of metals. Additionally, many chloride-bearing waste streams must be processed to obtain environmentally acceptable products. This paper reviews the technologies used for processing aqueous metal-chloride solutions and describes the challenges that have been overcome in application of these technologies.

Traditional sensitivity analysis of metallurgical data has the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. Such analyses provide no information about the probability of the results. Simulations that rely on the input of statistical information provide more realistic predictions of the value of future projects and offer additional information regarding the probability of the outcome.

"One method to increase the exploitation rate of a mine is the use of backfill with residual materials in exploited areas. The backfilled material is meant to support both, the walls of galleries and pillars as well as the roof of mining openings. With increasing depth, the exploitation rate diminishes fast, thus the application of backfill in order to change the layout of the mine is crucial for economic success. In result of using backfill, it is possible to change the layout of the working area with a higher ratio to excavated areas and less area occupied by pillars. Thus it is possible to boost the output of a mine by using backfill. Setting the criteria for the selection of the best possible materials and whose improvement, it is useful to know about their qualities and handicaps. The Mining Department at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is analyzing the parameters of residues from different processing methods, accrued in plants of different potash mines and blending different residues for optimization of material attributes. These were significantly characterized by basically parameters like the size and the distribution of different diameters of the grain material. INTRODUCTION The chair for underground mining methods at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is tasked with the sufficient and sustainable supply of economics with raw materials. The steady high demand, the rising prices and the finiteness of the deposits are reasons for the need of an optimized economic utilization of natural deposits, a continuous improvement of mining technics and technology. From an ecological and economical position the best possible utilization of the resources has to be achieved. Many mining operations are by reasons of the deposit not able to haul valuable minerals only, they have to haul a mixture of valuable minerals and waste rock. This hauled combination is given into the processing plant for separation and enrichment of the valuable mineral. The residuals of the processing are commonly dumped to a waste rock pile. For minimizing the size of such a waste rock pile and also minimizing the ecological footprint of a mining operation the only way is minimizing the quantity of accruing waste rock material. Both, optimization of economic utilization and also minimization of waste rock dumps can be realized in one by backfill with processing waste rock material in mined out areas. Especially in mines, mined by room and pillar method, smaller dimension of the pillars are sufficient for safety and stability. By the way less valuable minerals have to be leaved back in the mine and the mine outcome is increasing."

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 m (8 ft) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting. Saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile. This implies that care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a depth of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

The addition of dolomite to iron ore pellets improves their high-temperature reduction properties primarily by increasing their reducibility and raising their softening temperature. In this study we prepared dolomite-fluxed pellets from three different concentrates; Hibbing, a magnetic taconite, Knob Lake, an earthy hematite; and Carol Lake, a mixture of specular hematite with magnetite. The composition n of the concentrates is given in Table I. The pellets were subjected to standard physical tests and the following reduction tests: low temperature degradation, swelling, softening, and thermogravimetric analysis. Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis allowed us to evaluate the effect of composition and firing on the phase assemblage. Further, we were able to interpret the test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure. This approach enabled us to determine which fluxed composition best suited each of the concentrates.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Amax Coal Co. studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipeline of 15 to 51 cm-diam (6-20 in.-diam), monitoring vibration, strain and pressure. Unlike tests of small blasts simulating construction, these were up to 1 t (2200lbs) per delay in 31-cm (12-in.) blastholes. Worst-case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/sec (5 in./s) blasting vibrations produced strains about one fourth that of pressurization and 10% to 18% of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m (50 ft), which produced vibrations over 60 cm/sec (24 in./s).

As mentioned in chapter 8, one of the objectives of the budget is to provide a mechanism for ongoing measurement and control of the production operation. The budget shows expected performance. Actual results are compared to this benchmark to evaluate past performance and to direct future activities. The variances between budgeted and actual results identify specific activities that did not perform as expected (whether negatively or positively). Managers who use variance analysis are essentially applying a management- by-exception philosophy. Individual organizations will determine variances that reflect their own processes and managerial interests, but these variances all follow the approach outlined here. Firms will also vary in the extent to which variances are reported. Some firms use a few variance measures for the overall production organization whereas others calculate variances for individual departments or even individual work areas. As mentioned in chapter 5, it is important to distinguish between controllable and noncontrollable costs when using budgets for control and evaluation.

Background of Erie Mining Company Erie Mining Company, managed by Pickands Mather & Co., is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in the United States. The plant is located at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, sixty-five miles north of Duluth on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range. Taconite Harbor, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, is the location of its Power Plant and shipping facilities. (Figure 1) Even though the plant commenced operation in September, 1957, its true be-ginning can be traced back to 1931 when Pickands Mather, in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, began investi-gating the possibilities of processing low grade ores. In 1940, Erie Mining , Company was formed. During the early and middle 1940&apos;s, laboratory and pilot plant research was proven to a point where a preliminary plant was deemed feasible and built in 1948. This plant had an annual capacity of 203,200 t (200,000 long tons) per year and, until mid-1952, was the only taconite plant in existence using commercial-size equipment. During this period, ownership of Erie Mining Company was expanded to include Interlake, Inc. and The Steel Company of Canada, Limited. In 1953, authorization was obtained from the owners to build a 7.62 M t (7.5 M long tons) per year plant at a cost in excess of $300,000,000.

The New England States form the most northeastern portion of the continental United States and include Connecticut, Rhode island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. These states have an aggregate population of over 10.5 million people, and an average annual population rate increase of about 1.3%. A great deal of new construction is required each year to meet the increasing demand for new homes, roads, offices, factories, and warehouses. Yet, prices of construction materials such as blocks and concrete are generally higher in New England than in other well populated areas of the United States. This is an indication of local demand being somewhat greater than supply, an atmosphere conducive to new developments in the production of construction materials. One such field of development is the rapidly growing Lightweight Aggregate Industry. Recent construction in Boston has used a great deal of lightweight aggregate. New structures using lightweight aggregate in lightweight concrete include the following: M.I.T.&apos;s 20-story Earth Science Center and 17-story Married Students Housing Project Prudential Life Insurance Center, West End Redevelopment Project at Charles River Park, Hotel Americana, and the British-owned 33-story office building at 50 Pearl Street.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

This paper will describe several modifications to design of con­ventional oxide gold heap leaching. They are targeted at reduc­ing costs and simplifying heap operations. These modifications were conceptualized during consulting work on over 90 differ­ent heap leaches. In 1995, a unique opportunity arose to imme­diately apply all of these design concepts to the permitting and construction of a new facility at the American Girl Mine in southeastern California. American Girl Mine has operated since 1987. In April 1995, the mine faced a situation with grave consequences for cash flow. Approval for mining of a new ore zone, Oro Cruz, had just been granted, after lengthy delays by California regula­tors. All existing pad space would be filled by October. Only 6 months were available, and new pad siting and design were still undecided. Permitting of a new pad had not begun. Options were quickly reviewed. A strong criteria for pad site selection and design was ease of permitting. There was also a strong desire to install a system that would achieve better met­allurgical recovery and reduced operating costs, compared to previous heaps at this mine. One site offered the best chance for rapid permitting. It was the site of the original 1987-90 heap leach. This already dis­turbed ground contained 1.6 million tons of heaped ore. The old heap had just completed detoxification and was about to be signed off as a Group C waste, ready for reclamation. Instead of recontouring and revegetating the old heap, which the reclamation plan anticipated, we offered BLM and the County something even better. We proposed to off-load much of the detoxed old heap, and reuse the space. The off-loaded material would be back-filled into the original open pit, imme­diately adjacent. While the footprint of the proposed new pad was much larger, the reuse of disturbed ground, and backfilling of the open pit, had very strong appeal to the regulators. Our permitting strategy included the technical design of the proposed new facility. Many of the new design details also appealed to the regulators, particularly the "zero active ponds" concept.

INTRODUCTION Today, raise drilling (boring) has become the stan¬dard method of raising throughout the Western world. It is estimated that the majority of raise footage com¬pleted in 1977 was accomplished by the raise drilling method. Extensive replacement of the drill and shoot system by mechanized raise drilling has occurred be¬cause users have recognized one or more of the follow¬ing advantages. In a direct cost per meter comparison, mechanized raise drilling is economically more attractive than drilling and shooting. Mechanized raise drilling offers improved personnel safety over the drilling and shooting method. Mechanized raise drilling is a faster and more predictable method for excavation than is drilling and shooting. The raise cost per unit of length becomes less as the raise length increases, offering greater flexibility in the overall design of mines. Mechanized raise drilling provides a substantial reduction in labor requirements. 6) Mechanized raise drilling improves the working environment. 7) Mechanized raise drilling improves the rock in¬tegrity of round, unblasted raises. Increasing acceptance of the raise drilling technique is enhanced by continuing equipment development. Today, a wide range of machines and capabilities is available, machine drive systems have been improved, reliability has been increased, and cutter technology is being improved quite rapidly. Table 1 lists the four major manufacturers of raise drilling machines, cutters, and reamers, together with the approximate number of machines that each company had in operation at the end of 1977. Although Reed and Smith are major suppliers of reamers and cutters, they do not manufacture the drilling machines. Four or five other relatively minor suppliers have built machines, reamers, and cutters for raise drilling, but they did not have a substantial num¬ber of machines in the field at the end of 1977. MACHINES FOR MECHANIZED RAISE DRILLING There are three principal arrangements for making machine-bored raises. They include the use of standard raise drills, reversible raise drills, and blind-hole or box¬hole raise drills. Standard Raise Drills The standard raise drilling machine is set up on one mine level or on the surface, and a pilot hole is drilled from that level or surface to a level below. When the pilot hole has been drilled, the raise then is reamed back from the lower level to the upper level or the surface. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 1. Reversible Raise Drills The reversible raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a pilot hole is drilled up¬ward to a higher level. The raise then is reamed back from the upper level to the lower level. This arrange¬ment is illustrated in Fig. 2. The machines used for this type of raise drilling normally are capable of being used as standard raise drills. Blind-Hole or Boxhole Raise Drills The blind-hole or boxhole raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a full diameter raise is bored to a higher level without the use of a pilot hole. This type of machine is illustrated in Fig. 3. Drill Recommendations If access to upper and lower mine levels is equal, the standard raise drill should be used. The complexity of the equipment and associated handling procedures for boxhole drilling far outweigh any mechanical advantage or reduction in the number of operations, provided that access to an upper level is available. If there is good access to a lower level but only limited access to an upper level, the use of a reversible raise drill should be considered. If there is no access to an upper level, a blind-hole or boxhole raise drill is the only practical mechanized system. MACHINE SELECTION There are six major considerations in selecting a machine for raise drilling. These include operating range, cutter loading, machine structure and main¬tenance, drill string configuration, drive system, and automated controls. Operating Range As shown in Table 2 and Figs. 4 through 6, raise drilling machines are available for a wide range of hole sizes. Standard raise drill ratings range from raises of 0.9 m (3 ft) diam and 120 m (400 ft) length up to raises of 3.5 m (12 ft) diam and 900 m (3000 ft) length. Boxhole raise drilling machines are available for raises ranging from 0.9 m (3 ft) to 2 m (6 ft) diam with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Table 2 lists, among other criteria, the torque and thrust of typical machines; torque and thrust are the main criteria for analyzing the capacity of a machine. The raise sizes shown in Table 2 assume a condition of medium hard to hard rock formations and optimum cutter loading.
