"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electric field (E-field) sensing to send text based communications using two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. INTRODUCTION Wireless, Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point to point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. This ability allows TTE communication to function without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure, such as repeaters. As a result, such communication systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Wadley 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer 1973; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate through a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers 1928; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Yenchek et al. 2012)."

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is a recognized environmental challenge facing mining industries. An ambient temperature ferrite (ATF) process has been investigated for treating ARD. Most nonferrous metal and calcium ions present in typical ARDs were found to be detrimental to the ATF process. Three approaches were examined, including C02 aeration, addition of complex agents and use of magnetic seeds. By introducing magnetic seeds in the ATF process, the interferences were minimized and all the precipitates formed with lime neutralization were magnetically recovered from a simulated ARD. The residual concentrations of major metal ions in the treated water were environmentally acceptable. The XRD pattern confirmed the spinel ferrite crystal structure of the products

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district's major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. Sintering of iron ore has undergone a dramatic development world-wide. Today, the annual world production amounts to approximately 600 million tons. At present, the sintering process in competition with pelletizing, seems to offer certain advantages inasmuch as it allows the use of solid fuels. Also, its charging behaviour in the blast furnace is, in general, considered as being better than that of pellets. This is true, in particular, for the charging behaviour and the gas permeability in relation to the grain size. Moreover, instead of charging limestone into the blast furnace, for instance, the basic components which are necessary for the burden materials can generally be supplied in a simpler and more cost-effective way by using basic sinter instead of basic pellets. While in sintering, with basicity rising to the range of 1.6 to 1.8 CaO : SiO2, the capacity increases and the sinter quality shows improvements in most of its characteristics, the pro¬duction of basic pellets generally requires a higher fuel rate, when compared to acid pellets, while production capacity decreases and some of the quality characteristics deteriorate.

A field study was undertaken to experimentally measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) contained in the process streams generated by a group of 20 coal preparation plants located in the eastern USA. For each site, representative samples of clean coal product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse were collected. Each sample was then partitioned into preselected size and density classes by wet screening/sieving and float-sink testing. The resultant products were dried and subjected to laboratory analyses to determine ash contents and rare earth element concentrations including Yttrium and Scandium. A detailed analysis of the database generated by this exercise showed that coal-based products from these preparation plants contained significant quantities of rare earth elements. In particular, the coarse refuse streams currently discarded by the 20 plants examined were found to contain a sufficient tonnage of REEs to satisfy the current domestic demand for these important elements. The data also showed a strong positive correlation between ash content and REE concentration, which suggested that the primary association of REEs in eastern USA bituminous coal sources is likely within fractions containing inorganic impurities. This association was well described using a simple power equation relating ash content and REE concentration. The ratio of heavy-to-light rare earth elements was discovered to be significantly higher in organically rich fractions of clean coal, suggesting that mineral impurities intimately associated with carbonaceous matter have elevated concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. A similar trend was observed for a grouping of rare earth elements (Y, Nd, Eu, Tb, and Dy) that are likely subject to near-term supply shortages. Finally, the database showed that a linear correlation existed between La for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some high-value REEs (Lu, Pr, and Tb).

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.

"On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

Rehabilitation work at the Cameron Run Tunnels entailed the restoration of seven heavily deformed, approximately 69 m long, steel liner plate supported culverts through a CSX Railroad embankment near Alexandria, Virginia. A custom fabricated expander, equipped with four 200-ton hydraulic jacks on two expansion arms was used to push back the liner plates encroaching into the proposed tunnel profile and install the steel set support. In a second phase the tunnels were then lined with 16 cm of fiber reinforced shotcrete. Geotechnical instruments both in the tunnels and on the railroad embankment were used to monitor the effects of the rehabilitation work on the two CSX Railroad tracks above the tunnels. Freight and passenger trains were required to run uninterrupted and at maximum speeds throughout construction.

In April 1986, FMC- Paradise Peak Corporation began milling at the Paradise Peak Mine, which is located eight miles southeast of Gabbs, Nevada. The mill processes about 4DOO tons per day of ore through the mill and cyanide leaching circuit. Gold and silver are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. Tailings are routed to a tailings pond located about one half mile southeast of the mill facility. The pond, lined with 60 mil MDPE, was 25 acres at the start of the cyanide detoxification, covers 90 acres and will ultimately cover 180 acres. Solution is reclaimed from the pond and circulated back to the mill.

A $20M pressure oxidation facility is under construction at the Nerco Con Mine, Yellowknife. Plant commissioning will start in the third quarter of 1992. Roasting of arsenical auriferous concentrates prior to 1970 left 45,000 tons each of highly toxic gold-bearing arsenic trioxide sludge and roaster calcine at the minesite. Safe disposal of these wastes has been a high priority. In 1983 an arsenic trioxide plant was built by the former owner to re-treat the sludge and to sell the product. Due to a poor market and high operating losses, the plant was closed by Nerco in 1989. Mine production in the future will revert increasingly to refractory ore as a replacement for free-milling ore which has been the mill feed since the roaster was shut down. With this fact in mind, Nerco management saw the potential of a proven process to recover the gold from a combined feedstock of refractory flotation concentrate, sludge, and calcine waste. A further requirement was the stabilization of all the arsenic as an insoluble ferric arsenate. By the end of 1989, after the completion of a literature search and a study of process economics, pressure oxidation was selected. Extensive bench and pilot plant work was completed in 1990 and early 1991 to develop the process parameters and to complete environmental testing of the autoclave products. Management approval for construction of a pressure oxidation facility was made in December 1990. Plant capacity is 96 tpd requiring a 40 tpd VSA oxygen plant on site. Detailed engineering began in March 1991. The pressure oxidation building was completed by the end of 1991. The autoclave arrived on site and was mounted on its foundation in December 1991.

Beneficiation by froth flotation, which exploits the difference in surface properties of minerals, has been a promising method for coal cleaning. However, dissolved mineral species present in coal flotation systems can interact with particles and other species leading to drastic effects on flotation. Particularly, precipitation or adsorption of such species on the particles can alter their surface properties and thus influence the efficiency of coal cleaning. In this work, the bulk and surface precipitation of the dissolved mineral species present in Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was investigated under controlled experimental conditions. Changes in the surface properties of coal due to the precipitation were monitored by following zeta potential. Solution potential data were used to elucidate the mechanism of the precipitation. The effect of the precipitation of the dissolved species on the floatability of coal was found to be marked.

The genesis of a hydrothermal subsea mound, by chimney debris heaping and mineralizing fluid circulating upward, induces a vertical maturation gradient. Connected porosity is easy to measure and, after mineralogical evidence, can be use as a maturation index. Thus, to understand how a rock property evaluates with maturation, it is possible to plot it against connected porosity. Results are that uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and in a lesser certitude tensile strength, abrasivity and hardness, increase very weakly with maturation until a maturation threshold (equivalent to a connected porosity equal to 0.2), and rocket to much higher values after it.

The advances in knowledge of world bauxite resources in the last few decades include contributions to the geology of deposits, discovery of large resources, shifts in availability, and changes in. the industry in response to political and economic pressure. Improvements in the understanding of geology have resulted from the larger numbers of geologists working on bauxite and better exchanges of information. The large deposits discovered are mainly the laterite type in tropical regions. These discoveries have led to major increases in bauxite resource estimates as well as to shifts in bauxite availability and in the ranking of producing nations. Changes resulting from political, environmental, and economic pressures have resulted in increased costs of bauxite and in renewed interest in potential nonbauxite sources of aluminum. Aluminum is produced from nonbauxite raw materials only in the U.S.S.R.; however, research on extraction processes or investigations of nonbauxite alumina resources has taken place in several countries.

INTRODUCTION During the last few years, several new ventilation developments have attracted the interest of mining engi¬neers. Some of these developments are applicable pri¬marily to hard-rock mining, while others are more applicable to coal mining. STOPPINGS Parachute Stopping The parachute stopping is a new type of quick-erect stopping that is intended for temporary use in hard-rock mines (Kissell, Thimons, and Vinson, 1975). As shown in Fig. 1, the stopping is shaped very much like an ordinary parachute, with a canopy of impermeable fabric that is sewn to regularly spaced straps running to a common point. To erect the stopping, the straps are attached to a fixed anchor point such as a roof bolt, and the edge of the canopy is lifted into the moving air¬stream. The airstream pops the parachute canopy into place, and the differential air pressure across the stop¬ping holds it in place, forcing the fabric against the walls, roof, and floor of the mine opening. The principal advantage of the parachute stopping is that it requires only a few minutes to install, making it a great time-saver for emergency use or for day-to¬day changes in ventilation during the production cycle. However, the parachute stopping does require some minimum air velocity to lift it and some minimum differential pressure to hold it in place. For a fabric weighing 0.27 kg/ m2 (8.0 oz per sq yd), the minimum air velocity is about 0.5 m/s (100 fpm), and the mini¬mum differential pressure is about 0.05 kPa [0.2 in. water gage (WG) ]. There is always some air leakage around the stop¬ping, mainly depending upon the extent to which pipes or other obstructions encumber the airway and prevent good sealing. Leakage of a few cubic meters per second (a few thousand cubic feet per minute) can be expected, unless foam is used to improve the seal at the edges of the canopy. Quick-Fix Blowout Stopping The quick-fix blowout stopping is a variation of the parachute stopping (Thimons and Kissell, 1976), and it is used in the proximity of blasting operations. This type of stopping is designed to be blown out easily by the blast forces, and it may be reinstalled quickly and easily. The long high-strength straps of the parachute stopping are replaced by groups of short straps that tear easily. These straps are attached at six equally spaced locations around the perimeter of the canopy. To erect the stopping, one strap of each of the six groups is fastened to the mine wall, roof, and floor by using spads, by setting pins with a powder-actuated gun, or by tying the straps to some firm anchor point. Once the straps have been attached, the differential air pressure across the stopping, which must be at least 0.025 kPa (0.1 in. WG), forces the stopping perimeter against the mine walls, thus creating the air seal. It is the self-sealing feature of this stopping that makes it a significant time-saver. Only a few attachment points are needed; in many cases, four attachment points are sufficient, since the stopping naturally tends to form a seal with the airway surfaces. When nearby produc¬tion blasting exerts excessive forces on the stopping, one or more of the straps tears away from its attachment point, protecting the stronger canopy from damage. Damage-Resistant Brattice The damage-resistant brattice is a stopping that is designed for use in mines such as salt and limestone mines where the differential pressures are low and the roof is relatively flat. As shown in Fig. 2, the damage-resistant brattice consists of a series of brattice panels that are hung vertically and joined by Velcro® connections. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro® connection peels apart and allows the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro® connections can be resealed by hand within a matter of minutes. Such damage-resistant brattices have withstood the blast effects of 318 kg (700 lb) of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosive detonated as close as 91 m (300 ft) from the brattice. Ordinary brattice cloth is used for the panels, with a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® hooks sewn along one edge of the length, and a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® pile sewn along the other edge. Both the hooks and the pile are sewn onto the same side of the brattice cloth. The resulting Velcro® seal formed be¬tween adjacent panels is perpendicular to the brattice itself, and the leading edge of the seal can be directed either toward or away from the blast forces; the brattice works equally well in either case. To hang the brattice, panels of brattice cloth about 0.9 m (3 ft) longer than the height of the airway are cut from a 1.8-m (6-ft) wide roll. The additional 0.9 m (3 ft) of brattice cloth allows 0.3 m (1 ft) for attachment to the roof by means of a board, with 0.6 m (2 ft) for forming a good air seal at the floor. Each brattice panel is wrapped once or twice around a 51 X 102 mm (2 X 4 in.) or 25 X 76 mm (1 X 3 in.) mounting board that is 254 to 305 mm (10 to 12 in.) shorter than the width of the panel. Previous studies of the Thompson and Temperly ore bodies show alteration aureoles in the Middle Ordovician host-rock limestones, dolomites and shales extending laterally as much as 60m from the ore. Thickness, texture, carbonate and clay mineralogy, major-, minor-, and trace-element contents; and carbonate carbon and carbonate oxygen Isotope compositions of the host rocks all have been significantly altered by hydrothermal processes. Organic geochemical analyses of samples from the basal 8-cm-thick carbonaceous shale bed and immediately overlying limestone bed of the Quimbys Mill Member of the Platteville Formation, collected from within the ore, the alteration aureole, and the unaltered country rock show: 1) solution of carbonates and residual concentration of organic matter, 2) decreases in the volatile (Si) and pyrolytic (S2) hydrocarbon yields In samples of the basal shale from within the ore, 3) decreases in the relative amounts of the lower molecular weight (<nC25) saturated hydrocarbons in samples from the ore, and 4) no changes in either the organic carbon isotope composition or the Rock-Eval or biomarker thermal maturation Indicators. In light of the 125-170°C depositional temperatures documented for the early marmatitic sphalerltes in these deposits by fluid Inclusion studies, the lack of thermal alteration of the organic matter suggests a relatively short mineralization episode, a conclusion supported by the relatively simple sphalerite band stratigraphy. The decreases in the volatile and pyrolytic hydrocarbon yields for shale samples from the ore supports a model for mineral deposition which obtains sulfide through reaction of brine sulfate and indigenous organic matter.

A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.
