"Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

The emphasis in this paper is focussed on dry bulk car go or the same cargo converted to slurry form for ease of handling. It is this type of cargo which is of primary interest to the mining industry whose products it represents to a large extent. The design problems associated with the handling of liquid bulk and of unitized cargo are sufficiently different to be treated separately. This paper then will consider the port handling facilities of dry bulk commodities as part of a system consisting of (1) the movement of products to the port area, (2) the movement of products out of the port area and (3) the handling of products within the port area itself. Expanding within these three components of the total transportation system, the paper will discuss the various difficulties encountered concerning the mode of transport into the port area and the method of handling product from transport to stockpile. Secondly, and before discussing the port area itself and in order to complete the conditions under which the port must operate, the movement of products out of the port area will be covered dealing with such items as the accommodation of the ship, problem associated with the very large ships, optimum berthing arrangements and the need to consider the various costs associated with the vessel. Finally the paper will review within the port or interface area such items as stockpiles, method of recovery, inventory control and an outline of the common design difficulties encountered. In all cases the relative influence on the total transportation costs of each of these dry bulk transportation system components will be considered.

"Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). In addition, the froth products containing ultrafine coal are difficult to dewater. Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). The cost often becomes prohibitive with particles of smaller than ~45 µm (Bethell et al., 2005). Moreover, the high-moisture products are difficult to handle and incur high shipping costs and lower thermal efficiencies (Honaker et al., 2013)"

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef&apos; and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine&apos;s close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers&apos; service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. The mining value chain plays an important role in our societal development. Even in a circular economy, mining and raw materials are in great demand, and so are skilled engineers. In Germany, many students decide to pursue STEM studies in the tertiary degree. Nevertheless, the OECD reports low completion rates in obtaining the degree of studies [1]. Generally, the dropout rates in STEM education are high [2]. Many students have difficulties with basic subjects such as science and mathematics, in which they lack knowledge they should have acquired in school [2]. With the German STE(A)M project PepperMINT (https://peppermint.thga.de/), the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA) offers a digital and open educational platform, as a dynamic, massive open, online course (MOOC) for students and prospective engineers. The project is funded by the RAG-Stiftung (RAG-Foundation; No. 20-0004). Using adaptable MOOC classes and applied examples from the wide-ranging cycle of mining activities, we motivate students to engage in STEM studies. Our adaptive and application-oriented content demonstrates the diversity of jobs and career paths in the mining industry. The integrations of applied examples and research activities of the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola can increase the curiosity and motivation of learners. In mathematics, mine-surveiying technologies and geomonitoring methods (see figure 1) can be used to teach trigonometry. Additionally the concept of the free open online classes enables students in high school to get insights into the field of engineering before they decide the subject of their studies. For freshmen who already decided to pursue a STEM degree, the PepperMINT courses can help to identify and close knowledge gaps and to align different levels of knowledge within a heterogeneous student body. Empowering students in STEM education and integrating examples from mining research can help us train the mining engineers of the future.

The suggestion of the use of measurements of trace amounts of mercury as a guide to the location of sulphide ore deposits was first made by the Russian, A. A. Saukov (1), in 1.946. Since Saukov&apos;s original work, many others have studied the abundance of mercury in nature, the association of mercury with sulphide ores and methods by which very minute quantities of mercury can be measured in air, soil, rocks, water and plants. The most abundant of the mercury bearing minerals is cinnabar (HgS). Native mercury is also found and sulpha-salts like tetrahedrite are known to have important mercury contents. Other sulphides of base metal deposits contain mercury in amounts ranging from parts per million to as much as one or two percent. (2) The mercury content of sulphide-free rocks is usually less than a few hundred parts per billion (1 ppb - 10-9), Soils usually contain less than 100 ppb and water less than 1 ppb of mercury. Normal atmospheric air contains about 1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of Hg per cubic metre although higher concentrations can be observed near mercury occurrences, sulphide deposits and volcanic exhalations.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL&apos;s residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990&apos;s. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques, and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods.

The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

At Tahawus, New York, National Lead Company operates the MacIntyre Development, This operation produces 10,600 long tons of ore per day for crushing, 8,000 tons for grinding and processing, of which 2,000 tons per day reports as tailing for disposal in an impounded tailing storage area. With the change in location of mining operations at the mine of National Lead Company, a change in the area for tailing disposal by gravity became necessary, This called for the diversion of tailing from near the proposed mining area to areas more favorable for long term storage by gravity. In order to avail the operation of maximum storage for the future, a uniform minimum grade launder was proposed with a minimum velocity and maximum outfall at the discharge. Disposal of the gravity and flotation tailing was formerly accomplished in open ditch from the concentrator at a grade of 1.5 percent. It was desirable to design the new launder at grades less than this for the greater storage elevation.

Erratic distribution of values in free gold ore bodies presents severe problems in sorting material in large scale open pit mining. However, an intense program of modern blasting techniques and less than modern gold panning results in good sorting at Houston International&apos;s Manhattan mine. Blasting technique is important. If the sample location cannot be relocated because of blasted material movement, information acquired while drilling is useless. So short benches are critical to minimize dilution. Though not very accurate, panning allows for rapid analysis. The more accurate fire assay does not provide the needed speed. Panning can be fairly accurate and errors made are mostly on the low side. Samples of mixed and broken stockpile material are used as checks on pit procedure and to develop stockpile content in¬formation. Added tonnages discovered offset the higher labor costs of this careful sorting technique. The mine is located in central Nevada&apos;s Toquima Range in the small mining town of Manhattan, 322 km north of Las Vegas. The mine has four epithermal stockwork ore bodies that are mined in two pits. The mine problem was that conventional ore control was not separating ore from waste. Assays of 6-m blast-holes were used on 5-m centers. The blastholes were relocated by stadia survey after blasting. Holes assaying above the cutoff grade were flagged and mined as ore. This system is practical and useful in high concentration ore bodies or in evenly disseminated mineralization. But it was not practical at Manhattan because of large gold particles and small ore pocket sizes. Ore pockets were often missed when drilling a grid area for blasting. Also, large gold nuggets made assay results unreliable. The probability of a nugget being contained in an assay charge is small. So most results were low, compared to actual grades mined based on stockpile samples. When a nugget found its way into a fire assay charge, the result would be far higher than the actual grade of material represented. In addition, disturbance by blasting created problems in relocating ore. Because of these problems, the grade control program was intensified in September 1979. It successfully separated ore and waste in blocked out ore areas and located more ore in "waste" areas. Known reserves mined to date have increased up to 50% on some benches. The methods used are modern blasting techniques, detailed assaying, and traditional panning of samples collected from active mining faces. These methods allow mining flexibility, to match the variable mineral occurrence in ore bodies. The united effort of the geology and engineering departments has been important to the program&apos;s success.

An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

Track-type tractors remain one of the most cost-efficient stripping tools available to coal miners. Whether they are "sweetening up" a dragline operation with pre-benching or serving as the primary stripping tool, dozers can play an important role in driving down mining costs. This paper reviews the application zone of track-type tractors. In addition, it provides tips on site set-up, equipping of tractors, and machine operation which the audience can take home and apply.
