A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores was developed. The flowsheet involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent-extraction plant and operating conditions were made.

Since the interpolation of exploratory data 1 can be no better than sampling procedures, a series of field experiments were conducted in an effort to determine whether hand-cut channel or core washability determinations best represent continuous miner produced run of mine coal. By obtaining a core drilled to within a few feet of channels taken from an underground face and then overmining both locations; core, channels and run-of-mine coal allocations were obtained from a common sample and all allocations were subjected to identical washability determinations. In order to compare results, basic rules2,3 previously anticipated and later published by the writer were employed. The first rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the sulfur versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is linear". The second rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the recovery versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is logarithmic".

Longwall mining operations continue to increase extraction rates and the potential to generate higher amounts of airborne respirable dust (ARD). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gathered data from underground longwall surveys and laboratory crushing tests to identify the important factors influencing the amount of ARD levels generated. Coal-seam characteristics, operational parameters (i.e.,cut sequence, mining height, etc.), extraction rates and dust-control parameters (i.e., airflow, water flow, etc.) were examined to determine their influence on ARD levels measured at longwalls during actual mining operations. ARD generated by a laboratory crusher while crushing bituminous coal samples collected from underground longwalls was also examined to determine if there were cor relations with coal-seam properties. Results from the longwall and laboratory data collected indicated that low-ash, high-volatile coals (low moist fuel ratio or MFR coals) generate higher amounts of ARD. It was found that face ventilation and water application to the coal product are essential elements to controlling longwall ARD levels.

Laboratory and field scale kinetic testing was conducted to evaluate scaling up of laboratory data. Two 20- tonne (field) cells were monitored for internal temperature, pH, conductivity, volume and rate of flow, and water quality. On a surface are. basis, results showed sulfide oxidation rates obtained using 50-kg cells are more sensitive to changes in aeration than those from 1-kg cells. Correcting the laboratory oxidation rates for field temperatures with a pH 7 activation energy, which is in the field drainage pH range, returned oxidation rates an order of magnitude lower than the field cell rates.

The commissioning of a distributed digital control system for the grinding circuit at Cuajone was completed by mid-August 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability, and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console improved mill through- put significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the milk and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses the strategy development and the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system.

At the, Crescent Valley Mine of the Hanna Coal Company, several 10,000 ton unit trains of 41" x 0 strip coal are loaded per week during the lake season. This is accomplished without the use of any accumulation of prepared coal. A large raw coal pile is built up during the winter months adjacent to two truck dump bins. This is added to whenever trucks are coming in from the pits and trains are not being loaded. During the loading of trains, trucks from several pits dump into the truck hoppers and coal is also dozed in from the pile. At a rate up to 3200 tons per hour this coal is screened, the plus 6" hand picked, the plus 4" crushed, and' all weighed and sampled as it goes directly to railroad cars being handled on two tracks by car retarders. With such an arrangement it is possible to exercise some control over coal quality, if it can be assessed rapidly. For instance, if the moisture rises to a level where it seems probable the BTU per pound will be reduced to the point where the contract calls for penalties, the trucks from, the wettest pit may be stopped, more or less coal may be moved in from the stockpile, or other measures taken to assure that the average BTU of the trainload will be satisfactory.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. Improvements in the control of coal mine dust have occurred over the past 25 years. Simultaneously, dramatic improvements in coal mine production technology have occurred, particularly at mines where longwall systems are in use. Production rates of longwall systems have quadrupled since 1978, and dust generation on these systems has significantly increased. However, technology to address control of the resulting increased levels of respirable dust has not kept pace, and many high-production longwall sections continue to experience problems with respirable dust control. This paper seeks to enlist the entire mining community in the effort to resolve the health problems presented by excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust, particularly on longwall systems. These systems are expected to increase in number and length, and to generate increasingly higher levels of dust as production rates of these systems continue to rise.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In the present study, the flotation response of silver from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (Ag, CU)2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.

A test section of the upper most lift and underlying lifts of a large scale copper heap leach operation was instrumented and monitored with advanced wireline geophysics, fiber optics and resistivity electrode arrays. Elemental Capture Spectroscopy (ESC) copper measurements, resistivity measurements from an Array Induction Tool (AIT), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) with fiber optics provided integrated near real time data about the performance of the heap. During the leaching cycle, ECS provided continuous vertical measurements of copper in the upper most and underlying lifts in the test section of the heap and was used to generate a copper recovery curve. ERT inversion modeling provided high resolution 3D resistivity measurements, which were used to evaluate moisture distribution. DTS measurements of temperature were used to track the PLS front and calculate velocity. AIT induction provided highly precise bulk resistivity measurements. In-situ samplers provided PLS chemistry at multiple points. Properly integrated monitoring data can provide the heap leach operator with information that can be used to evaluate the hydrodynamics and metallurgy of the leaching process in near real time. Problems in the heap, such as pooling, channeling, longer lag and breakthrough times, excess acid consumption, increased solution in inventory, toe saturation and slope stability can be detected in near real time with the in-situ measurements evaluated.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. Control circuit failures contribute significantly to continuous miner downtime. The time required to put the machine back into production is a function of the time required to diagnose the problem, obtain parts, and make the repair; of these, the diagnostic time is often the largest. A microprocessor-based system with the ability to diagnose all of the common control circuit failures was designed, installed on a continuous miner, and tested. This paper summarizes the development of the diagnostic system, and provides examples of the system's diagnostic capabilities. Implementation issues and the hardware used for the prototype are briefly described. Finally, comments on the system's performance are presented.

Automatic control of fine-coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of adequate sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for the on-line determination of ash contents in fine-coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73[±] 4% ash over a range of from 65% to 90% ash. While the results are comparable, the video-based system costs only a fraction of what a nuclear-based analyzer costs. The sensor is now installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant, which is owned by Pittston Coal Co.

Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. In modeling of hindered-settling bed separators, the published separation mechanisms are based on differences of particle density and size distributions, without the details of complexity of particles-liquid interactions. A fluid dynamic model for the separator is developed using Euler-Lagrange approach of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Fluid motion is obtained from solving the movement of liquid governing equations. The damping effect on flow pat-terns caused by the movement of particles resulted in liquid-particle coupling is included in the model. Effects of particle size, and particle density compositions, feed rate, feed water flow rate, upward fluidizing water flow rate, etc., are simulated in the 2-D separation model. Flow pattern effects on the separation of fine particles in the separators with center downward-flow and side cross-flow feed systems are investigated.

An evaluation of the use of air cooling power as an index of the thermal environment is discussed. A body temperature prediction -. model based on body temperature tests, a concept linked to a maximum safe body temperature and the predicted fourth hour body temperature which depends on the rate of heat accumulation (heat storage) within the body has been developed and tested. This has led to the conceptual development of a personal response heat stress meter calibrated to the physiology of the personnel within the workplace. The proposed heat stress meter will be able to measure workplace environmental parameters such as air temperature, humidity and air velocity and the user can either select or manually enter other heat stress parameters such as work rate, clothing type and subject's personal response to heat. With a built-in computer program, the meter will calculate the ACP of the workplace, the fourth hour body core temperature expected and the maximum safe working time allowed for a pre- defined limiting body temperature. A brief description of the work required for developing the meter is included. The potential benefits of such instrument to the mining industry are also evaluated.
