The length of Alaska's coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, the decision-making process is complex because various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option. An expert system, called the Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES), was developed to help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD. A review of the existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of the marine disposal of tailings formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVELS.

Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs.-quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

One of the Swiss transalpine highways includes two remarkable tunnels: the 16.3 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel and the 9.3 km long twin tube Seelisberg Tunnel, both presently under construction. Large diameter shafts up to 900 m long are required for ventilation. Excavation techniques for rock formations ranging from loose sedimentary rock to granite and very hard siliceous limestone were carefully evaluated. The methods finally applied include excavation of shafts in hard rock, conventional drilling and blasting, excavation by ripper-tooth excavator ("Big John") in marlstone, shield protected heading in loose material and soft rock, and tunnel and shaft lining, both by poured concrete and by prefabricated elements. A critical review of the success of these methods can now be made after a five year construction period.

During the past five years the use of all-hydraulic drilling equipment has increased rapidly, and we have now reached a point where the hydraulic drill has become an alternative to be seriously considered for every drilling operation. The hydraulic drills have many advantages over pneumatic drills, but they also have certain characteristics, which makes a potential user hesitate before making the switch. And when the decision to use hydraulic drills has been made, the user then faces another choice of equal difficulty: the choice between different hydraulic systems. This paper discusses some of the factors to be taken into account when considering hydraulic drilling equipment for rapid tunneling in hard to medium hard rock. THE CHOICE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT The choice between a hydraulic and a pneumatic drill is much more than just that: It is a choice between two different systems. The choice is usually based on the productivity, economy or ergonomy of the system. However, also other factors should be considered, such as service capabilities and training requirements. And finally the choice will be influenced by the need to acquire know-how in the new technology. The slurry transport within the ball mill greatly influences the mill holdup, residence time, breakage rate, and hence the power draw and the particle size distribution of the mill product. However, residence-time distribution and holdup in industrial mills could not be predicted a priori. Indeed, it is impossible to determine the slurry loading in continuously operating mills by direct measurement, especially in industrial mills. In this paper, the slurry transport problem is solved using the principles of fluid mechanics. First, the motion of the ball charge and its expansion are predicted by a technique called discrete element method. Then the slurry flow through the porous ball charge is tackled with a fluid-flow technique called the marker and cell method. This may be the only numerical technique capable of tracking the slurry- free surface as it fluctuates with the motion of the ball charge. The result is a prediction of the slurry profile in both the radial and axial directions. Hence, it leads to the detailed description of slurry mass and ball charge within the mill. The model predictions are verified with pilot-scale experimental work. This novel approach based on the physics of fluid flow is devoid of any empiricism. It is shown that the holdup of industrial mills at a given feed percent solids can be predicted successfully.

An accurate knowledge of the interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species is important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation, interactions relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption (the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation) within Florida phosphatic clay Waste were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slimes were due to unselective polyacrylic acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Al and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. A further increase in the separation of natural slimes is most likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

Municipal garbage incineration processes with coupled wet flue gas cleaning systems generate effluents containing toxic heavy metals such as mercury, zinc, cadmium and copper. The separation of these metal ions from the obtained scrubbing solutions is possible using liquid-liquid extraction. Extraction studies has been performed both with commercial extractants Aliquat 336, di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and novel chelating agents as acyl thiourea and lipophilic oxathiaaza alkanes. Advantages and disadvantages of the investigated extraction systems are discussed. The paper reports on the basic research as well as on the testing in a laboratory scale.

With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Subway tunnels proposed for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LAMTA) East Side Extension are to be excavated below the groundwater through an area of Los Angeles, California with dissolved hydrogen sulfide concentrations in excess of 200 mg/L. To address unique construction and worker safety issues, bench scale and field pilot test studies were conducted to evaluate various mitigation alternatives including in-situ oxidation by chemical injection, slurry pH adjustment to suppress H2S evolution, and chemical treatment to remove the H2S from the slurry and muck material. The results provided the basis for detailed hydrogen sulfide control specifications for the contractor.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem-a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile-was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

El Abra has the world's largest leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning facility, The crushing plant capacity is 120,000 metric tonnes per day and the cathode production capacity is 225,000 metric tonnes per year. The El Abra mine and plant are located in the Province of El Loa, in Region I1 of Chile, 55 km. north of the city of Calama. The ore deposit outcrops on the southern slope of Cerro Pajonal at an altitude of 3,900 to 4,100 meters above sea level. The processing plant and camp facilities are located at a lower 3,300 meter elevation on an alluvial slope, 15 km southeast of the deposit. The operating company, Sociedad Contractual Minera El Abra, is 51% owned by Cyprus Arnax Minerals Company through the Cyprus Climax Metals Company subsidiary and 49% owned by Corporaci6n Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco). The present paper describes the ore reserves, mine operations, crushing, leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning and infrastructure facilities.

In August 2011, the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) contacted mining institutes and related societies internationally to assess their interest in participating in coordination of the review of the South African Code for Mineral Valuation (SAMVAL) with reviews of other mineral valuation standards. The main mineral valuation standards are the CIMVal Standard of The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the VALMIN Code of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the SAMVAL Code, and the extractive industries? guidance note of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), Valuation of Properties in the Extractive Industries, GN 14, designed for application within the full set of International Valuation Standards (IVSs). By January 2012, SAIMM had concluded that the level of respondent interest was adequate to organize a meeting. A meeting was scheduled for April 18, 2012 in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with a VALMIN mineral valuation conference organized by the AusIMM. The stated purpose of the meeting was to develop an accord on terms of reference for pursuing harmonization of mineral asset valuation standards adopted by the participating mineral institutes. SME decided that, although it has not developed its own mineral valuation standard, it should participate in the Brisbane meeting and the harmonization process, as also did the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA).

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.
