In recent years exploration and development of low-grade sulfide precious metal ore deposits has increased. Low- grade ores are usually processed using conventional heap leach cyanidation methods. The potential for acid mine drainage from spent sulfide ore heap leached residues remains a concern even though the processed residue is stacked on an impervious liner system. It is therefore of critical importance to evaluate methods for long term prevention of acid mine drainage from sulfide heap leachable ores during the precious metal recovery process rather than mitigation during the closure and reclamation phase. This paper discusses two simple AMD prevention options for the recovery process phase. Laboratory evaluations were made using a modified humidity cell kinetic AMD test method on two low-grade sulfide ores without addition of an alkaline component and on the same ores with natural limestone or acid neutralizing oxide ore blended with the feeds before kinetic testing. Laboratory results are discussed in detail and demonstrate that blending an acid neutralizing component with sulfide ore effectively prevents the production of acid from the processed residue.

A computer software package, named CFIRE, for the general ventilation network analysis and fire control, mine fire and/or coal spontaneous combustion, has been developed at Xian Mining Institute in China. It is a multipurpose package with adequate capacities of ventilation map drawing, ventilation network analysis, gob fire simulation, steady state ventilation simulation and transient state ventilation simulation. It was written in a user-friendly style, driven by menus, facilitated by on-screen messages and supported by the allowance of user interferences. CFIRE has used up-to-date research findings focussing on the practical needs of coal mines. This paper discusses briefly also the relevant theoretical principles on which this package has been perceived.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

The thickness of the laminated beam modeled in this study is based on bridging potential and TDR measurements. The laminated beam stiffness is based on the effective stiffness of an equivalent transformed section. The maximum deflection of this near-surface laminated beam is compared with the maximum measured surface subsidence. The spreadsheet provides a rational technique to graphically display the character of the overburden and potentially allows prediction of a subsidence factor based on boring logs and the proposed mine plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau), utilizes a commercially available computer spreadsheet program in combination with a modified version of Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system to characterize the geology overlying high extraction coal mines. The spreadsheet program calculates a RMR for each bed based on the lithology, thickness, and engineering properties, which are determined from boring logs and laboratory tests. Once the RMR is calculated the spreadsheet has two major functions. First, the spreadsheet calculates values used to graphically represent the character of each individual bed in the overburden. It calculates an in situ deformation modulus using an empirical rela¬tionship between the modulus and the RMR and then uses this effective modulus along with additional parameters that are based on mine geometry to calculate the bending stiffness and bridging potential for each bed. Second, the spreadsheet creates a transformed section that allows groups of beds to be modeled as an elastic beam. It then calculates a bridging potential for the entire rock mass. The bridging potential of the rock mass is a single value that takes into account both the geology of the overburden and the geometry of the mine. It seems reasonable that there would be a strong correlation between the bridging potential, the overburden response to high extraction mining, and the subsidence ratio. The results presented in this paper focus on the relationship between the bridging potential of individual beds and the deformation measured using Time Domain Reflectometry (TOR). Subsurface displacements measured over seven high extraction coal mines in southern Illinois were correlated with the bed stiffness and bridging potential profiles. Based on these correlations it was evident that the process of caving and subsidence over these high extraction mines involved momentary bridging by individual beds or groups of beds and the ultimate development of a laminated beam near the surface.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. On the basis of nonequilibrium zeta potential measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established. The results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory. This recent electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble-salt flotation systems suggests that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation results confirm this surface-charge/collector-colloid adsorption model and are presented herein.

This paper analyzes the 1982 coal mine accident data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for key equipment types, by mine type, and by geographic region. The differences in hazards associated with the various equipment types are studied both in absolute (i.e., total number of incidences) and relative (i.e., incidence rate or the number of incidences per 200,000 employee or exposure hours) terms. The paper compares and contrasts the total number of incidents as well as incidence rates classified by several types of severity measures such as lost workdays cases, mean number of lost workdays per lost workdays case, fatal cases, non- fatal cases without lost workdays, total number of cases, and total number of lost workdays This statistical analysis shows that significant differences in hazards exist not only due to equipment type but also due to mine type and geographic region.

Exploration for non-fuel minerals has declined since 1988 as recessionary pressures have slowed growth in the industrialized economies. By most accounts, however, 1990 expenditures were still significantly greater than the low levels experienced in the mid-1980s. The Persian Gulf crisis introduced instability in energy prices and greater uncertainty into an already cloudy economic picture. As 1990 unfolded, the US savings and loan problems spread to the commercial banking system, leading to the failure of several major US commercial banks. The Japanese stock market also suffered significant losses as Japan's Central Bank raised interest rates. The Soviet Union experienced shortages of food and other basic items. Its government faces resistance to changes leading to a market economy. Individual Soviet republics also are seeking more control of their own destiny. The cost of German reunification, in terms of the capital required to bring the east's infrastructure and industrial base to western standards, also appears to have been underestimated.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine is first among all equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a ?JOY Designed for Noise Reduction? (JOY-DNR; Patent Pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 45% and 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when compared to a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

Production of highly-cleaned coal for advanced utilization schemes requires close control of the coal ash content at very low levels. For this purpose, a sensitive, low-cost, robust on-stream ash analyzer is needed. The development of such an instrument based on x-ray backscatter and fluorescence is described, including features to improve its sensitivity at low ash levels. The performance of the resulting device in testing a real coal sample is discussed.

The efficient and effective utilization of hydraulic excavators relies on, among other factors, a better understanding of the formation resistance during the excavation process. Studies on hydraulic shovel excavators have focused on optimizing the digging process by considering the reaction of the boom, stick and bucket, and analyzing the resulting moments at the shovel’s front-end joints. These studies failed to understand resistive forces from a statistical viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to develop machine-learning models capable of predicting the formation of resistive forces during shovel excavation. In June 1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published the 'Report of the Coal Mine Respirable Dust Task Group; Review of the Program to Control Respirable Coal Mine Dust in the United States." As one of its recommendations, the report called for the accelerated development of two mine dust monitors: (1) a fixed-site monitor capable of providing continuous information on dust levels to the miner, mine operator, and to MSHA, if necessary, and (2) a personal sampling device capable of providing both a short-term personal exposure measurement as well as a full-shift measurement. In response to this recommendation, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Center, initiated the development of a fixed-site machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor. The technology chosen for monitor development is the Rupprecht and Patashnick Co., Inc. tapered element oscillating microbalance. Laboratory and in- mine tests have indicated that, with modification, this sensor can meet the humidity and vibration requirements for underground coal mine use. NIOSH is continuing that effort by developing prototypes of a continuous dust monitor based on this technology. These prototypes are being evaluated in underground coal mines as they become available. This effort, conducted as a joint venture with MSHA, is nearing completion with every promise of success. The immediate benefit of this effort will be to researchers, regulatory personnel, and mine personnel, by permitting evaluation of specific mining practices to see which expose mine workers to excessive dust levels. Using this information, mine personnel can optimize mining procedures to reduce dust exposure. MSHA and the operators will also be able to use the dust concentration data to judge whether dust plan parameters are adequate to continuously maintaining environmental dust levels below the applicable standard. The second development recommended by the Dust Task Group was a person-wearable version of the continuous dust monitor. It will be a monitoring system designed to provide a measurement of worker exposure to respirable dust, both during and at the end of the shift.

Gob holes are routinely used by the mining industry to vent methane from gobs and to prevent it from entering the mine ventilation system. In some cases, flows from gob holes are measured by centering an anemometer on the end of the discharge pipe. These measurements are erroneous and tend to be high by as much as 30%. The Bureau of Mines determined correction factors (method factors) for anemometer measurements taken in this manner. Method factors for 10.2, 15.2, and 20.3 cm (4, 6, and 8 in) ID pipe are 0.68, 0.71, and 0.78, respectively. Comparisons between horizontal and vertical flows indicated no significant change in method factors. Consequently, the method factors for horizontal pipe flows can be applied to vertical upward flows.

"Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh Coal seam in Northern West Virginia under U.S.B.M. Co-operative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of fourteen, small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by an exhaust fan on surface. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7 to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar, the standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m, and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance, and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane-migration towards cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45° ± 10°.

During the winter months of late 1985 and early 1986, residents along Dry Fork near Grundy, Virginia (United States) experienced seismic events that they attributed to longwall mining at Island Creek Corporation’s (Island Creek) Virginia Pocahontas Mine No. 3 (VP-3 mine). Island Creek contacted STS D’Appolonia Ltd. (STSDL) on March 7, 1986, to investigate these events. An STSDL representative, Vincent Scovazzo, interviewed residents of Dry Fork on March 10, 1986. It was noted that only people within a residential structure felt the events they described as house shaking, vibrating walls, and ceramics falling from shelves. STSDL representative installed a blast monitor at a residence. Within 2 days, various events were recorded. Some could be attributed to truck and heavy equipment movement. Eight events had no obvious cause but appeared on resident’s written logs as earthquakes caused by mining. STSDL contacted Utah Geophysical, Inc. who had developed a technique to determine the mode of rock failure using the seismic record. Utah Geophysical was engaged to install and monitor a microseismic network, locate the epicenter of the events, and work with STSDL in determining modes of failure. The network was comprised of six geophones located at five stations. Data was recorded for 24 days from May 20 through June 13, 1986. The data was filtered to eliminate events determined to have an origin other than the longwall panels’ overburden and under-burden. The larger events from this filtered data set were selected and analyzed to determine their hypocenter locations, time of occurrence, magnitudes, and failure mode. Processed data was interpreted, tabulated, and plotted by STSDL to provide information relative to the sources of the seismic vibrations and their possible relationship to the mining operation.

Caterpillar and Fortescue Metals Group have moved forward with the delivery, installation and support of a complete Cat MineStar System at Fortescue?s Solomon iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The complete technology suite was implemented for the first phase of Solomon, the 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy) Firetail manned mine, in October 2012. As part of an autonomous mining solution for phase two, the 40-Mt/a (44-million stpy) Kings Mine, eight Command for hauling Cat 793F CMD trucks were commissioned and commenced operations in the second quarter of 2013. The mine plan calls for a progressive ramp up to 45 autonomous trucks during the next several years. In addition, other Cat MineStar System capability sets, Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, are being used across the mobile equipment fleet, including support equipment and light vehicles. Working closely with Fortescue and its mining contractor, Leighton Contractors, Caterpillar and the Cat dealer in Western Australia, WesTrac, are providing a full solution for managing, operating and supporting Cat MineStar System and Command for hauling. The greenfield Solomon Mine has brought together the skilled team from Caterpillar, Fortescue, Leighton Contractors and WesTrac to deliver an efficient, cost effective autonomous mining solution.

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz.) Au/Ton. Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.
