Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible

This paper reviews the historical background leading to the development of the project. It gives a description of the exploration program and resulting geological and ore reserve information together with plans for mining. A discussion is included of the three processes investigated for the project: 1. Rotary Hearth and Magnetic Concentration 2. Shaft Furnace and Electric Furnace 3. Rotary Kiln and Electric Furnace Results of pilot plant campaigns conducted at Fiskaa, Norway, and Riddle, Oregon, on the process chosen for the production of ferronickel are presented. The paper continues with a review of the considerations involved in selection of commercial plant equipment and concludes with comments on the current status of the project.

In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. Bioleaching is an environmental friendly process that has gained much interest for the production of metals from metal-bearing wastes or materials. The process decreases carbon footprint by reducing consumption of fossil fuels. Iron is a key factor in acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria’s activity, which is used extensively in the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. In the present study, the effect of different iron sources is investigated on sphalerite (ZnS) bioleaching. For this purpose, the effects of FeSO4  .7H2O, Fe2(SO4  )3 and FeS2 (pyrite) were studied on bacterial activity, and zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) dissolutions were monitored from a ZnS concentrate. Under optimum conditions, the dissolutions of Zn, Pb, Cd and As were found to be 39.8, 0.1. 0.03 and 10 percent, respectively, in 25 days.

The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine in western Colorado with multiple mine openings, waste rock piles, and adit seepages that Cyprus Climax Metals Company (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary) voluntarily remediated through the Colorado Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCUP). The process to obtain a No Further Action determination from the VCUP is presented. Water treatment of the adit discharge, which is not part of the VCUP, is also presented. The remedial action objectives (RAOs) included preventing direct human or biotic exposure to the waste rock and radiation emitting from the waste rock; reducing metal concentrations and radionuclide activities in adit discharge and keeping the discharge from leaving the site; maintaining the existing undeveloped character of the surrounding landscape; and eliminating the need for a stormwater permit. The design included regrading, installation of an infiltration barrier and rock cover, a diversion channel, and a biologically based passive remediation water treatment system. An initial lab-scale evaluation provided design criteria for the full-scale system, which consists of a sulfate-reducing biochemical reactor and post-treatment aerobic polishing cells. The system has been operational since construction was completed in late 2016. Results indicate that the treatment objective of 90% bulk removal of constituents of potential concern (COPCs) is largely being met. The system also provides year-round operation and non-point discharge of effluent. After 20 plus years of site investigations, the remedial action was completed in 2016 with all RAOs met and a No Further Action determination granted in 2018. INTRODUCTION The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine located approximately 11 miles north-northeast of Rifle, in Garfield County, Colorado. It was leased and operated intermittently from 1929 to 1975 but was never operated by Cyprus Climax Metals Company (Cyprus) (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary). Prior to reclamation, site features included: • six mine openings—five adits and a vertical opening; • two adits discharging mining-influenced water (MIW)— Adit 1 at less than 4 liters per minute (L/min) and Adit 2 at 7 to 10 L/min; • main waste rock pile (13,500 m3) and small waste rock pile (minimal volume); • debris (small structure, mattress, bottles, shells, etc.) indicating site used for recreational purposes; and, • unimproved road, which has been used to access forest fires.

The discussion will relate only to the southern half of the Silver Cliff volcanic center and differences in geologic interpretation, which are largely structural, will be pointed out as they arise. Only the manganese/silver zone of the Kate Area will be discussed in detail.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. Gua supergene enriched iron ore deposit from Jharkhand, India has been geostatistically modeled. Population modeling shows a negatively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Fe and positively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Al2O3 and SO2. Semi-variographic studies for Fe indicate spherical function fit using point kriging cross-validation technique with Co=4.06(%)2, C5.11 (%)2, Co+C=9.1 7(%)2 and 'a'=348m. Kriging with 50mx50mx 10m block size at 740mRL led to a global mean kriged estimate of 61.98% and kriging variance of 4.04(%)2 for Fe with central 90% geostatistical confidence limits at 61.39% and 62.24% for that level. This led to an ore inventory at 740mRL as 7.29 million tonnes of ore.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

The talc deposit in Gemerská Poloma lies 350 to 400 m under the surface; the whole deposit is located at the highest-level drinking-water-source protection zone, therefore, opening in this mining area (a well, a ramp) requires higher investment, operational and water protection costs. The adit, outside the mining area, with a length of 4200 m, rising with a gradient of 3? and a diameter of 10.3 m2, allows free passage/runoff of mining-water through the adit, and guarantees low costs for transporting produced material and equipment. This solution is in total less demanding from both investment and operational point of view.

As far back as 1939 state laws have required reclamation of mined lands. Reclamation has been the topic of many discussions and presentations, especially since the late 1960's. In the past ten years many states have added legislation concerning the reclamation of coal-mined lands. In the near future, it seems certain that some federal regulations will be passed that will set minimum guidelines for the states to regulate. Besides the requirement of returning the land to the approximate original contour, future regulations will more than likely demand replacing topsoil from one to five feet thick. As regulations become more stringent, costs will rise accordingly. Since no one has developed a machine that can do all reclamation work by itself, it is necessary to review in detail the tools available and to select the most economical means.

Respirable (PM-10) crystalline silica is regulated by the State of California as a carcinogen. The risk-management of this material by the State exemplifies the inherent problems in the development of regulations based on current risk-assessment practices. The influence of extremely conservative risk-assessment and risk-management can be expressed in economic impacts including the increased cost of production, reduced competition, increased prices, reduced employment and redistribution of income. This paper attempts to contrast theoretical risk- assessment and risk-management with current application using crystalline silica as an example. Based on health information pertaining to silica, the paper examines federal and State of California regulatory and public policy positions. Using current risk factors and empirical data for the Central Valley of California, the projected incidence of lung cancer in humans is examined. While such an analysis would project an extremely high incidence of lung cancer as well as silicosis, not a single case of either lung impairment has been recorded within the study area or throughout the world in the general population. This suggests that sound guidelines for the analysis of scientific information have given way to the assumption that virtually any information representing a substance as a carcinogen is to be considered valid with little or no qualification.

"Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 100 ft./min. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research [OMSHR] Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities (500, 700, and 900 fpm) and at water pressures of 100, 150, and 200 psi. Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground coal mining in the United States produced a total of 342 million short tons, with longwall mining accounting for over 53% of this production [EIA 2013]. The longwall mining industry continues to see remarkable and significant improvements in longwall mining equipment and mining practices. Average shift production during compliance dust sampling has increased from 3,500 tons per shift in 1994 to approximately 6,000 tons per shift in 2012. A dramatic decrease in working longwall faces from 80 to 49 has occurred over the same period [Fiscor 2013]. Factors specific to longwall mines that supported productivity improvement include: higher capacity shearers, improved shield hydraulics and control, higher horsepower for equipment, wider face conveyors, and larger faces. Today, the average face width has increased to 1,188 ft., with one longwall operation reporting a face width of 1,650 ft. compared to an average of 750 ft. in 1994 [Fiscor 2009, 2014]. Panel lengths in 2013 averaged 11,307 ft. compared to 7,000 ft. in 1994. Overall production from U.S. longwalls has increased by nearly four percent from 2007 to 2012 with over 182 million tons mined annually [EIA 2013]. Given the volume and rate of coal produced on longwall faces, the potential to generate large quantities of respirable coal mine dust also exists."

Gold mineralization at the Colosseum Mine is submicroscopic and associated with pyrite. Pyrite occurs in breccia clasts, replacing dolomite, in crackle breccia veinlets with traces of quartz, and as disseminations in two small, interconnected intrusive pipe complexes of rhyolitic felsite and breccias of felsite and wall/country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus wall rock of Pre-cambrian gneiss to cross-cutting breccias "of felsite, gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are in contact with the Precambrian gneiss terrane one-quarter mile (40Om) southwest of the Colosseum pipes. Mineable reserves are estimated to be 8 million short tons (7.3 million metric tons) at 0.074 troy ounces of gold per short ton (2.3 g/metric ton) at a cutoff of 0.03 troy ounces of gold per short ton (1.0 g/metric ton).

The phosphate fertilizer industry is a large activity in Brazil because the soil has a phosphorous deficiency. The phosphoric acid that is produced is extensively used in the production of fertilizer. It is produced by reacting phosphate carbonaceous rock with sulfuric acid, generating phosphogypsum as a by-product. In 1991, there were about 29 million tons of phosphogypsum stored in Brazil. This has increased to an estimated 280 million tons in 2001. While the phosphogypsum is used in the cement industry and also in agriculture, the quantity used is much less than the production rate, and the stockpiles are still increasing. The radioactivity of this waste may not allow its continued use as a construction material and some other uses. However, Brazilian phosphogypsum contains a smaller quantity of radioactive materials than is reported for phosphate rocks from other countries. One important reason is the geological origin of the Brazilian apatite. All the large deposits being currently mined are igneous, not sedimentary, as is the majority of the phosphate rock produced around the world. An extensive study is being conducted to characterize the phosphogypsum generated in two production facilities in Sao Paulo state to develop safe uses for this waste and determine the environmental impact caused by the present method of phosphogypsum disposal.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.
