Around two-thirds of world silver mine production comes from mines where the majority of ex-mill revenue is obtained from other metals. In this talk I will illustrate the importance of this output of silver as a by-product of the mining of various base metals. I will also consider the impact of relative changes in base and precious metal prices on mill-head revenue, and therefore, on production decisions. During the latter half of 1982 improving silver prices encouraged re-openings at several base metal mines. Thus some production of lead, zinc and copper can be regarded as partly conditional on the prevailing silver price. Conversely, a good deal of silver production can be considered to be independent of the silver price and dependent on the production of some base metal. It is the degree to which the value of silver mined affects the revenues of nominally, base metal, producers that is the central concern of this presentation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis to investigate the bonding mechanism which occurs during the dewatering of clay slurries. High molecular weight polymers are used as flocculating agents in these processes. This investigation presents the results of an FT-IR study of calcium-exchanged montmorillonite treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Both thin film and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopic techniques were employed to study this clay-polymer system~ Results suggest PAM is adsorbed to the clay via the nitrogen atom of the polymer. A water bridge is involved in the bonding between the clay and PE~. Evidence also suggests that PEO may be adsorbed directly onto the surface of the clay.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of topdown managerial practices: reductions in production volume, employee layoffs, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefits are often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost-cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization's various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

"Since 1997 the Institute of Mining Engineering 1 at the Aachen University is dealing with the concept of sustainable development in the mineral industries. During this time it has conducted several research projects in this field. Its latest project is on the development of sustainability indicators for the German mineral industry. This paper describes some results of this project. A process chain analyses have been carried out identifying economic, social and environmental effects of the minerals extraction. Thirty indicators reflecting the particular conditions in the mineral industry have been designed. One important challenge was the design of quantifiable indicators taking into account the life cycle of a mining operation as well as mineral beneficiation and enrichment of the raw material."

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

"RELIABILITY & SAFETY – TOGETHER. REALLY? I was starkly reminded of the challenges facing by the coal industry while talking with a number of senior mining executives. One said to me: “Safety is the #1 priority in our organization but of course, dollars are very, very important!!!” A coal mine worker at the Bluefield Coal Show claimed: “We know our equipment is bleeding hydraulic fluid all over the place but all that matters is getting the coal out”. We all understand. We want our people to go home safely at the end of the day but the coal industry is bleeding – fluids, dollars and real blood. An issue getting plenty of buzz these days is equipment reliability – in mining too! Achieving an optimal return from the massive investments in equipment is a critical requirement for success within a capital intensive industry like coal mining. You can cut costs by scrimping on maintenance, scavenging used parts and downsizing. Or, you can save money by being smarter with your asset management processes. Can we afford to spend money on both safety and reliability? Is one more important than the other? Many leading edge companies from a variety of industries will tell you that you can’t just cost-cut your way to profitability - or even survival. You need to systematically improve the effectiveness of your business. Do reliability and safety both have a place in improving the performance of the coal industry? According to Ron Moore, of The RM Group, the answer is emphatically YES! Ron says: “If you believe in safety, then you MUST believe in reliability and, more importantly, have the appropriate policies, systems, practices and measures in place. If you want lower costs, you must get your processes right. Simple cost cutting will remove resources from your system without changing the underlying system design, and performance will likely deteriorate.” Figure 1 shows the 5+ year results of a large manufacturing company. When plants are running well (high Asset Utilization), then injuries are less likely. Figure 2 plots data from a number of manufacturing plants. If you want sustainably lower costs get your reliability processes right. But these are manufacturing companies, not coal mining operations! It doesn’t matter. The fundamentals still apply. Mining industry thought leaders tell us that manufacturing is 20-30 years ahead of us and we need to learn from them – and do so quickly. Leading companies, no matter the industry, think in terms of operational excellence. They see this as the meshing of people, process and technology to achieve optimal results. Safety and reliability go hand-in-hand. People and equipment are different – but only to the extent that each requires its own relevant, but related, policies, practices, systems and metrics to achieve effective performance."

Joy Mining Machinery has developed a new generation of ultra-heavy shields for Anglo Coal Australia?s Moranbah North Mine in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland. These are the largest two-leg longwall shields yet produced by Joy. The longwall at Moranbah North posed a number of challenges, among them a thick, inclined, sometimes undulating seam with increasing depths. The result of this was the need for larger, heavier, more powerful roof supports. Knowing that future longwalls would be going deeper, mine management determined that shield yield ratings of at least 1,750 t (1,930 st) was what would be required.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

The US Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters, namely, shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration, on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model for predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. The results showed that the model reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and that it was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in the polymer dosage had a greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself: It was also determined that, given all the above parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on floc growth.

"The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. "Broken and jointed ground is extremely hazardous and requires unique stabilization techniques to protect worker and critical entries. Bolting techniques, even the most advanced with pre-load to create roof compression, can leave large gaps of unconfined and separated roof. This roof can also be susceptible to water inflows which only exacerbate the support problem. These types of conditions existed on long term development main entry accessing several future longwall panels. The geotechnical assessment identified well-defined jointing systems that also permitted water to flow between the roof separations, which “lubricated” the roof material and minimized any frictional advantages. Chemical injection of a Polyurethane material, Minova Carbopur WS, was placed beyond the bolted horizon to move the water to the rib lines and reinforce the fractured and broken roof. The injection material permitted the effective use of bolting patterns and helped ensure long-term stability of these critical entries. The paper describes the evaluation techniques, design patterns, basis for chemical selection and application, and results and recommendations.BACKGROUNDThe injection of mine and underground civil structures using polyurethane (PUR) has been ongoing for over 50 years. The applications in mining have included gate road stabilizations, longwall set-up and tear-down entries, and simple consolidation of coal mine roofs. PURs have also been used for roof stabilization during longwall shield recoveries. Polyurethane injection was initially developed by the Bergbau-Forshung GmbH, a German coal mine research institute, in the early 1960s (Jankowski, 1972). The product became a standard stabilization method in Germany after its commercial introduction in 1971 (Knoblauch, 1994), and was successfully manufactured at the Minova Essen, Germany location for over 50 years. With the recent closing of the German underground mines, that manufacturing facility has been closed and moved to Katowice, Poland, where production continues today Injection products are also being successfully manufactured by Minova in Australia and the United States.Polyurethane injection in underground coal mines is used in difficult ground conditions in fractured immediate and main roofs. It is also common as a rock stabilization remedy to prevent longwall face caving during shield removal. As presented in the case study, polyurethane was applied to minimize the inflow of water from beneath a stream channel while providing reinforcement and consolidation of the fractured roof that had lost confinement. Polyurethane is a two-component system (Part A and Part B) that is injected into a borehole and can chemically bond to the rock, not relying on friction or mechanical interlock to provide support. The material is injected under pressure, coupled with a low viscosity and small particle size; it flows into roof fractures and separations, which are the paths of least resistance. New developments in low viscosity PUR materials allows penetration of cracks as tight as 0.002 inch (0.05 mm) wide. This also allows for the closures of extremely small cracks to minimize the inflow of water, even if the water is under pressure. Combinations of designed expansion properties and low viscosities make the materials ideal for minimizing and stopping flows of water from underground structures."

Pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems provide alternative methods for the safe and efficient mining of the thin high-grade coal seams found in the Southern Appalachians. Pneumatic systems eliminate most of the health and safety hazards associated with the operation of conventional mining and haulage equipment in small low-coal mines by removing powered mobile equipment from the mine. Ventilation is also improved by the coincidental removal of gas and respirable dust from the mine by the operation of the pneumatic loading and conveying system. Other significant advantages of pneumatic coal recovery systems are relative simplicity, operating flexibility, low capital cost, quiet operations, environmental benefits, and ease of automation. The design considerations and field evaluations of experimental prototype pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems, installed and operated in small thin-seam mines, are presented in this report. In addition, fundamental design criteria and recommendations for the installation and operation of a variety of pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems are proposed, which offer alternative coal recovery systems that alleviate the serious health and safety concerns of current small mine operations.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

The design and effectiveness of ground consolidation to regain stability of longwall faces vary widely and are often based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. Little is known regarding product migration characteristics or change in rockmass conditions as a result of the application of consolidation chemicals. This paper presents the in-situ testing rationale designed and implemented recently across several longwall operations in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia to provide quantitative measurement of the actual zone of influence of various resin injection products. Product migra- tion was physically measured by monitoring the change in rockmass temperature as a result of the exothermic chemical reaction of the various strata consolidation chemicals used. In conjunction with strata coring and Lugeon transmissivity testing pre- and post-injection to characterise the improvement in rockmass conditions due to consolidation product injection. The results of the testing programme, migration measurements, and rockmass assessment are presented, along with a discussion on how site- based Rock Mechanics Engineers can incorporate the data into the design of strata consolidation plans.

The stability of a hemispherical cavity, intended to model a perforation opening in the vicinity of a borehole, is analyzed for the case of poroelastic-plastic material behavior. Two plasticity models of differing complexity are considered, with the emphasis in either model being the use of strain softening to calculate inelastic stiffness. Sample results illustrate the effect of steady fluid flow on the response, and possible collapse, of the near perforation region.

Current methods for scratching a piece of rock to obtain or check the characteristics of its component material can sometimes be expensive and time consuming. Scratching a rock core requires an object with a point that it is capable of sliding along the surface of the rock while recording the response from the rock due to the sliding. With the idea of providing a cost efficient solution for a scratch device, a new generation turntable arm, composed of a cartridge with a diamond stylus and a USB output connection to the computer, was used to record the vibrations from the sliding of the stylus along a rock core surface. The output sound from the stylus was captured with the computer as an audio input signal. The raw sound data was recorded in a standard waveform audio format (wav) file, and post-processed using sound spectrum analyzer software (Spectra-Lab) to capture numerical data such as frequency, amplitude, and noise from the file. The results for frequency, amplitude, and noise were compared and plotted against the scanned surface of the rock core in the search for correlations that might represent specific characteristics of the surface being scratched.

Many utility fuel choices 1990-95 defied expectations, with utility decisions and coal market developments ever more closely linked. The Central Appalachian coal boom never occurred; clean-enough coal was developed in the hard-hit Midwest; Colorado-Utah coal surged; Pittsburgh seam production strengthened; utilities embraced Powder River Basin coal; and emission allowance prices collapsed. Competition drove productivity gains, but the future is not a simple repeat. Phase 2 brings fewer viable compliance options. Mega-railroad pricing has become a key risk factor --will this be countermanded by merging utilities and power market competition? Revenue losses from vintage contracts are problematic. Uncertainty also plagues natural gas, in spite of unanimity across major forecasts, since recent experience has been so heavily influenced by the gas bubble.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

Underground mining is a very complicated and complex industrial activity. The uncertain and, in most cases, the incomplete knowledge of the geological and mineralogical nature of the deposits can cause unforeseen difficulties. For a safe and uninterrupted operation, in addition to good planning and scheduling, reliable and up-to-date monitoring and control of all processes and conditions become necessary. Today, this is even more important in view of increasingly difficult working conditions, poorer grades, and more complex and expensive machinery. In short, large capital investment and higher risk of financial losses are involved in modern-day mining operations. Monitoring and control of the underground mining process has become a very complex and difficult task in itself. Many different systems are available, and the correct choice .is of utmost importance from both the economic and safety points of view. This chapter will deal with aspects of underground production monitoring and control. There are, however, many other areas of equal importance which are covered in an excellent manner in a hand- book by Olaf (1976) on monitoring and control of underground operations.
