During the summer and fall of 1973 a series of Skylab and high-altitude aircraft overflights provided excellent hard-copy photographs of the Great Basin. These photographs, with a wide range of ground resolution were used by the NASA Project of the University of Nevada, Reno, to conduct specific geologic studies. The principal objectives of these studies were to: select individual areas covered by Skylab photography for detailed studies, develop mapping techniques using varied film-filter products with a wide range of ground resolution, compare the results of the mapping techniques to existing geologic maps at comparable scales, verify the results wherever possible by direct field observations. These studies were conducted by Jack Quade and Dennis Trexler and by graduates and undergraduates of the Reno campus under a contract with the Manned Spacecraft Center Houston, Texas.

"In this study, the studies to develop a flowsheet for a low grade chromite ore are presented. The existing concentrator had to be suspended due to the decreasing metal prices. The study commenced with mineralogy and liberation profile of the chromite. The valuable mineral is chromite and the major gangue mineral is forsterite together with small amount of brucite and calcite. Heavy liquid tests were performed on different size fractions without any acceptable success. The concentration tests were performed using teetered bed separator (TBS) +shaking table, spiral concentrator+TBS+shaking table for different grind size. Based on the test results, 100% finer than 0.4mm was found to be optimum for grind size. Comparison of alternative circuits showed that the performance of both alternatives would be similar. A flowsheet was designed and operated for as 25 tph trial circuit in the existing plant. The results showed that the performance of the plant predicted was very close to the actual plant data. The paper describes the methodology used, presents the experimental data and actual performance figures.INTRODUCTION Turkey is one of the largest chromite producers in the world. Since 1850, chromite mining found industrial applications and geographically spread along six different regions in Turkey. Although the reserves in these locations are not as rich as the big producers, they are regarded as very valuable due to Cr/Fe ratio in terms of chromite utilization standards (1, 2). In this period, significant portion of high grade (=35% Cr2O3), directly marketable ore deposits have already been produced. According to General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (Turkey) data; 83% of the known chromite deposits of Turkey which makes 242 341 000 tons in total, is consisting from the deposits those have a Cr2O3 grade lower than 10%. Only 5% of the known deposits (13 087 000 tons) has a grade of directly saleable (2, 3). Gravity concentration methods are well-known processes for chromite beneficiation and there are plenty of plants in the world and Turkey using these methods. As different equipment combinations can be used for the same enrichment method, different methods can also be used in combination for plant designs (4). Beneficiation of low grade and problematic chromite ores may lead to use these method and equipment combinations (5, 6). Ore liberation, the grades of Al2O3, SiO2, FeO and Cr2O3 in the obtained concentrate, Cr/Fe ratio, some physical and chemical properties between gangue and minerals (i.e. specific gravity, magnetic property, color, etc.) designate the selection and combination of these methods and equipment (7)."

Most mining and metallurgical plants have developed predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies have also been installed in several metallurgical sites. These control strategies require instrumentation maintenance from local personnel. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is a must for global plant optimization. Specialized performance control monitoring algorithms are required to justify their existence and contribution to the bottom line. Emerging technologies are combining these techniques into a single total plant system. Tools are required to assist in troubleshooting and adapting these process control instruments and strategies. The key is the plant equipment and process control availability and utilization rather than just maintenance.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

The primary merit criteria used by the mining industry is internal rate of return (IRR) rather than net present value (NPV) although NPV is favored by academicians. This paper discusses the problems with IRR and NPV and compares the multi-goal nature of decision makers and their need for information with the characteristics of NPV and IRR. Conclusions are that both NPV and IRR are needed for investment ranking, that NPV suffers the same multiple root problem as does IR.R, and the determination of incremental IRR to reach NPV consistent project ranking is misguided in practice.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts and different numbers of plastics types as well as of fine bulky materials (<4mm). These wastes are mostly given to land-fill sites. Thermal adhesion seems to be a great means to efficiently separate plastics mixes. Tests carried out at a special lab-scale testing unit (TaA1) confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the separating mechanism. The thermal properties of the individual types of plastics differ from each other to a sufficient degree so that special products or product mixes of high material purity can be obtained according to the respective requirements. For this reason, plastics mixes such as PE and PP can be sorted with very good results. The separation efficiency is influenced only by different contact surfaces. The contact period can be adjusted to a short period of time so that sorting large amounts of fine dispersed plastics seems feasible. Sorting processes in feed streams were shown to be technologically effective when applying appropriate technologies. For the time being, the technological application of a thermal adhesion drum separator (TaTr1) is suitable. First tests on such a pilot-scale unit provided good separation results.

A magnetogravimetric separation is the consequence of two competing forces with opposing directions, i.e., magnetic buoyancy and gravitation (or centrifugal force). While magnetic buoyancy is a function of particle volume, gravitational force depends on particle mass, thus permitting a separation according to specific gravity. Since magnetic buoyancy is not a phenomenon of common knowledge, this chapter is meant to briefly introduce the theory of magnetogravimetric separations. A particle that is suspended in a magnetic fluid which is exposed to an inhomogeneous magnetic field experiences a repulsive force -the so called magnetic buoyancy. In order to illustrate this effect, an analogy with the more familiar hydrostatic buoyancy is drawn. Hydrostatic buoyancy occurs due to unsymmetrical pressure distribution &apos;above&apos; and &apos;below&apos; a suspended particle (fig. 1).

Introduction Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available that allow direct in situ analysis of adsorbed layers. With reactive internal reflection elements (IREs), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar. 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Fig. I is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/dodecylsulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate and KCI/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990). Of particular interest to flotation chemists is the conformational behavior of the alkyl chain of adsorbed collector molecules. In the simplest sense, conformation can bethought of as the relative flexibility of the hydrocarbon chain caused by rotations about carbon-carbon single bonds. The flexibility is described by the amount of gauche/trans conformations in the alkyl chain. Figure 2 shows examples of gauche and trans conformations (rotational isomers or rotamers) in a hydrocarbon chain. These two conformations are observed when the terminal methylene groups in any four-carbon subchain are on the same side (gauche) or opposites sides (trans) of the plane of the middle carbon-carbon bond. A gauche conformer (rotamer) is thus a state of maximum potential energy, whereas a trans conformer is a state with minimum potential energy. The difference between these states has been found to be approximately 0.5 to 0.8 kcal/mole (Mead et al., 1986). The relative number of butane molecules present as gauche conformers with respect to trans conformers can be calculated from the Boltzmann equation (Mead et al., 1986). At 25° C approximately 66% of the butane molecules are trans rotamers. [ ] However at 100° C, only 33% of butane molecules are trans rotamers. Exposing the hydrocarbon chain to a polar, rather than an a polar, medium should also cause an increase in the number of gauche butylene groups in a hydrocarbon chain, although this effect has been difficult to observe experimentally (Mead et al., 1986). Forming a crystalline hydrocarbon is equivalent to decreasing the temperature, which greatly increases the amount of trans butylene groups present in the chain. From the preceding discussion, a picture of the solution species of concern can be developed. The collector monomer should exhibit the greatest number of gauche rotamers and most likely will look crumpled or balled-up to reduce the surface area in contact with water. The micellar form is expected to be aggregated, with the hydrocarbon chain existing in a less polar environment. These characteristic conformational features have been examined by FT-IR spectroscopy for various liquid phases of alkanoic acids (Umemura et al., 1981; Cameron et al., 1982a; Yang et al., 1986; Wong, 1987; Wong and Mantsch, 1983; Cross et al., 1992), phospholipid membranes (Fringe Ii, 1980; Casal and Mantsch, 1985: Wong et al.. 1988;

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson&apos;s RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

Oil production rate and ultimate primary recovery from a heavy or viscous oil reservoir is usually limited to a very small fraction of the original oil in place. Typically, normal production rate is in the range of up to 10 barrels per day and expected ultimate cumulative production is up to 10% of in place values. Heavy oil reserves are not all alike. The physical properties of the rock, the liquid hydrocarbons, and depths of the deposits are so different that each reservoir poses a unique enhanced oil recovery problem. In some reservoirs thermal recovery by internal heat generation or external heat injection has been successfully exploited. In other reservoirs, mining the oil bearing formation for oil recovery by surface processing has been practiced. This paper will present an overview of the heavy oil recovery state of the art and discuss the critical factors leading to the decision for selection of a conventional hydrocarbon recovery or mining and extraction processes.

The concrete block industry can trace its beginnings to the early 18th century when most of the experimental work was being carried out in England. In America, the concrete masonry industry got started shortly after the Civil War and has had sometimes a spectacular, but always a steady growth since then. From a few hundred thousand concrete masonry units made in the late 19th century, the industry today produces approximately 3.3 billion concrete masonry units making it the largest industry in the United States for masonry wall materials. There were 3500 concrete masonry plants manufacturing these units after World War II. This nwnber decreased to 1500 by 1970 although the production of concrete masonry units increased by over 100% in the last 25 years. One of the reasons for this increase in production by less than half of the plants which once existed, is the tremendous strides made in automation of production machinery. The concrete masonry plant of today is probably one of the most automated small businesses in existence. Within a few years it will be possible to push a button and the entire manufacturing process will begin with no human hands touching the units until they are laid up in a wall at the manufacturing plant and are trans-ported to the job site. No other concrete product has reached this state of manufacturing sophistication and it is one of the reasons why the price of a concrete masonry unit is not much different than it was 2S years ago. Because of automation, it is safe to say that concrete masonry will remain a highly competitive building material for many years to come. The problems that beset the continued use of this material are not related to the cost of manufacturing and delivering the product. What are some of the problems as well as some of the opportunities and is the golden age of opportunity knocking rather than a wolf in disguise? The use of concrete masonry has grown each year because a larger unit was provided at less cost than other competitive materials. The rest potentials of molybdenite electrodes are measured as a function of pH in absence and presence of flotation reagents. The chemicals used include sodium ethyl xanthate, kerosene, dextrin,sodium hydrosulfide, hydrated sodium molybdate, sodium sulfate, and hydrated sodium thiosulfate. The effect of dissolved oxygen is also noted. The obtained data are correlated with the results of micro-flotation tests obtained under similar chemical conditions.

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. Thank you, Don Gentry, for your generous introduction. It is not adequate simply to say that I appreciate very much the vote of the Award Committee putting forth my name as the winner of the 1992 Daniel C. Jackling Award. To look at the list of previous Jackling Award winners is a humbling experience. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has been blessed with some exceptional members over the years, and I feel privileged indeed to be included among the Jackling Award winners. During the years of my education at Penn State, my field of specialization was mining engineering, with particular emphasis in my master&apos;s and Ph.D. work on rock mechanics. But my career has not been quite so tightly focused as that. I have been involved with coal mining in all its variety - its technical aspects, both theory and practice; and its business side, dealing with management and labor, accountants and lawyers, politicians and environmentalists. And I have also been involved with related fields - construction; exploration; barges, railroads, ships and docks; supply houses; the coke business; you name it. Coming from that practical background, I believe it is most appropriate that I talk with you today about some practical matters. But I will not advise you today how to mine coal or protect roof in a hard-rock mine. You fellows know how to do that. The practical matters that I have in mind relate to policy - national policy. I will acknowledge immediately that national policy is often much less than practical, but bear with me as we explore the subject together. I am reminded of a supervisor I had early in my career. He very strongly advised me, back in 1961, to "get involved in the political process," for without objectivity injected into our national policy making, we will become a second-rate economic power. I have selected as the subject of my remarks today, "Coal and the de facto National Energy Policy." There is an energy policy relating to coal, a de facto one, and it&apos;s the one we see as a result of regulation, attitudes and culture from our nation&apos;s capital. This de facto policy is the one we in the coal business live with every business day. My thesis is very simple - Coal is, in fact, a vital part of our national energy policy and will remain so, as a practical matter, no matter what politicians may do to us, or not do to us. Coal will prevail - that will be the happy ending to my story in which, of course, we are the good guys in the black hard hats. But first, I must flesh out the plot with some other characters and with some threatening activities. There are five main characters in my story: in order of appearance - Perpetual Politics, Rampant Regulation, Selective Science, Electrification and Confident Coal. The time: the present. Perpetual Politics is always a threat to coal. INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. Dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] is an intolerable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. The need to develop a cost-effective method for the removal of dolomite from high-MgO phosphate ores becomes increasingly important as high-grade reserves become depleted. The jigging process has been investigated as a method for the beneficiation of phosphate ores. A laboratory-scale jig was constructed and tested using a semicontinuous, ?through-the-screen? jigging process. Two types of sedimentary phosphate ore were used; a sample from Plant 1 in the 4.00 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 1.55% MgO, and a sample from Plant 2 in the 3.40 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 3.07% MgO. These were tested, using previously optimized jigging parameters, at high and low feed rates. For the Plant 1 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 0.89% MgO was achieved with a bone phosphate of lime (BPL) recovery of 32.0%. For the Plant 2 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 1.38% MgO was achieved, with a BPL recovery of 74.7%. Minimum achievable MgO grades were also determined by analyzing hand-separated phosphate samples.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

Calcium-based scale precipitation is a common problem in mill reclaim waters. An accumulation of these adherent deposits can result in a rapid reduction in water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in ore production. Heap leach applications can also experience the added problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon columns when scale control is not maintained. The primary cause of scaling in precious metal recovery is the relative insolubility of calcium carbonate. The presence of the calcium ion and bicarbonate alkalinity is common in almost every water source. If the temperature or pH of the water is allowed to increase, the bicarbonate breaks down to carbonate and combines with calcium by the following reaction: Ca +2 +2HCO3 ? CaCO3 + H2 + CO2
