This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) includes a 2.7-mile long, 18'-10" internal diameter tunnel which is located inWest Seattle. Tunneling in urban areas and soft ground conditions (Till and Till-like soils in Seattle) is associated with the risk of settlements, especially in presence of groundwater above the alignment. The Designer foresaw the use of soil improvement (jet grouting) outside of the launch shaft to mitigate the risk of flowing ground and to provide a redundant sealing. The Contractor proposed and ultimately successfully executed a different approach by using a “Steel Bell System” or Pressurized Can as described in this paper.

Results are presented from a series of tests designed to determine the beneficial effects of the microorganism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans upon the leaching of uranium from a pyritic uranium ore. Minus 1-inch (-25mm) 0.0711 percent uranium containing, pyritic ore from the Rio Algom Mine at Elliott Lake, Canada was leached with lixiviants of various Eh and pH as well as being subjected to a biologically-assisted ferric iron leach. In all cases, the biological leach gave superior extraction. At pH 1.6, the biological leach gave 100.6 percent extraction and the ferric iron leach 69.8 percent. This improvement in extraction is associated with a relatively rapid biological breakdown of the pyritic material, thus liberating uranium mineralization associated with these pyritic materials and regenerating the ferric sulphate lixiviant in situ.

"R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

A metallurgical/flux is a substance that is added to combine with gangue (unwanted minerals) during ore smelting, with impurities in a molten metal, or with other additives in metal refining processes to form a slag that can be separated from the metal. Because slags are immiscible with the metallic melt and are of lower density, a separation of the slag and metal occurs if the viscosity and surface tension are of the proper values. The chemistries of slags are adjusted to provide the proper melting point, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, specific heat, density, or chemical properties to effect the desired task. In addition to absorbing impurities from the metal, the purposes of the slag are to thermally insulate the metal bath, protect the molten metal from the atmosphere, and control the chemical potential of the system. Several excellent references on slags and metallurgical fluxes are available (Boynton, 1980, Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985, Turkdogan, 1983, Rosenqvist, 1974, Fine and Gaskell, 1984). The function of the slag might vary at different stages within a process prior to final melting. For example, the slag composition and behavior will change as materials descend in the iron blast furnace, or as they melt in the early stages of formation of steel- making slags. Selection of the chemistry for a slag might be influenced by factors outside the primary function as when blast furnace slags are used to make cement, rock wool insulation, or fertilizer supplements. Sometimes slags contain a sufficient amount of valuable recoverable elements to be sold as raw materials for other processes. Fluxes are often referred to as acid, basic, or neutral. Acid fluxes are those that generally form acids in water and bases are those that would generally form bases in water. Typical acid fluxes are silica, alumina, and phosphorus, although alumina can function as either an acid or base. Typical basic fluxes are lime and magnesia. Fluorspar, or calcium fluoride, is a neutral substance because it can be viewed as the reaction product of a base and an acid. The degree of acidity (ratio of acids to bases) or basicity (ratio of bases to acids) is often specified to characterize the slag chemistry for a particular system. The system might also be referred to as acid or basic depending on the choice of slag, for example, basic steelmaking uses slags with more bases (lime and magnesia) than acids (silica and alumina). Many forms of minerals and compounds have been used as fluxes depending on the process requirements, availability, costs, requirements for recycling of intermediate products, and environmental concerns. Because slags are most often mixtures of oxides and silicates, fluxes are usually oxides, carbonates (which decompose to oxides) and silicates. Slags comprising phosphates, borates, sulfides, carbides, or halides have also been used (Rosenqvist, 1974, Moore, 1981, Szekely et al., 1989). In ironmaking and steelmaking, some acidic components are sometimes added. In nonferrous processes slags and fluxes are acidic with silica as the primary component, and although the use of basic flux such as limestone or lime is not extensive, some amount is used to modify slag properties and some refining slags are lime based. The production of iron is accomplished by smelting of ores, pellets, and sinter in blast furnaces with subsequent refining of molten iron and scrap in oxygen-blown processes. The electric furnace is used to make steel, stainless steels, ferroalloys, and special alloys, whereas ferromanganese is often made in blast furnaces. Fluxes are used in all of these processes, and either limestone or lime is the major flux component with some dolomite, dolomitic lime, silica, alumina, and fluorspar being used. In ironmaking, the flux is added either by direct charging or through sinter and fluxed pellets. In steel refining by the basic oxygen process, flux is added as lime and dolomitic lime that are either charged as lumps or injected as fines. Some small amount of limestone is sometimes used. Fluorspar is often added as lumps or mixed with other fine materials in briquettes. Alumina is sometimes added to blast furnaces either by direct charging of sized lumps or through sinter. Typical acid fluxes are sand, gravel, quartz rock, used silica brick, or raw siliceous ore (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Olivine, which is a magnesium-silicate mineral, has been added to iron blast furnaces to enhance removal of alkalis (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Alumina in the form of bauxite, aluminiferous clay, and recycled alumina brick has been used as flux. Alumina can function amphoterically as either an acid or base, for example it can form aluminum silicate in high silica slags or calcium aluminate in lime-bearing slags (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Limestone (calcium carbonate) and dolomite (magnesium-calcium carbonate), or fluxstones as they are sometimes called (Boynton, 1980), and their calcined forms, lime and dolomitic lime are the major basic fluxes. In the latter cases, the carbonates are de- composed in a kiln-type process to drive off carbon dioxide that might otherwise interfere with the subsequent smelting or refining process or require expensive forms of energy to effect the decomposition (e.g., by combustion of coke in the iron blast furnace). Limestone is considerably less expensive than lime because it is not calcined; however, lime is far more difficult to handle and reacts readily with water. Dolomite and dolomitic lime are used for their magnesia content. Fluorspar is a neutral flux often used as an additive in steel- making slags to improve fluidity, but it has also been used in combination with lime as a primary slag in electroslag refining (Duckworth and Hoyle, 1969). The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

"A paper called “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” was presented at the North American Tunneling 2006 conference (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). It summarized global experience with earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry shield tunneling on nine projects that encountered groundwater heads ranging from 6 to 11 bar. Since then, additional projects have been completed with groundwater heads ranging from 7 to 15 bar. Of these, the high pressure tunneling experience on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project in Nevada and on the Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul Strait Crossing) had the greatest lengths of tunneling at face pressure over 7 bar. Experience with sustained pressurized face tunneling at groundwater heads over 7 bar and risk management observations are the focus of this paper. INTRODUCTION High groundwater head, particularly at 7 bar or more, is a major challenge when tunnelling in high permeability ground and on drives long enough to require cutter changes. It has a strong impact on design and operation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in order to protect the main bearing from contamination, prevent excessive groundwater inflow, ensure face stability and enable access to the cutterhead and excavation chamber for maintenance. During the past 20 years, TBM manufacturers and suppliers have made tremendous improvements that allow tunneling at groundwater pressures to 17 bar or more. The most significant risk with high pressure tunneling is generally that of excavation chamber access and potentially the cutterhead for cutter changes, cutterhead repairs and TBM maintenance. Hyperbaric interventions are possible and safety variances have been approved for saturation dive interventions at pressures as high as 17 bar (Lake Mead Intake No. 3). While high pressure hyperbaric intervention equipment is available and safety approvals can be obtained at many locations, few contractors consider the cost and risk of hyperbaric interventions over 7 bar to be acceptable as the primary means of excavation chamber access. Experience with high pressure tunneling prior to 2006 was summarized in a paper entitled “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). That paper provided information on 9 projects: South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego; Channel Tunnel (French Side), France; Storebaelt Tunnel, Denmark; 4th Elbe Tunnel, Germany; Wesertunnel, Germany; Westerschelde Tunnel, Netherlands; St. Petersburg Red Line, Russia; Nara Prefecture Water Conveyance Tunnel, Japan; and Tokyo Wan Aqua Line Tunnel, Japan – see Table 1."

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

This paper describes the research con-ducted on bit wear and respirable dust generation conducted by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust. The USBM investigated wear, energy and dust characteristics of various conical bit designs when cutting rock. WVU studied the functional relationships between wear, cutting force, energy, and dust of one conical bit type when cutting coal. The objective of the USBM study was to identify qualitative bit selection guidelines for cut-ting rock; WVU&apos;s research objective was to determine optimum bit replacement guidelines. These research studies both found that bit geometry (a function of bit design and wear) influences energy consumption and dust generation. Bit selection and replacement recommendations are given.

The sounds of soft violins nudged John from his sleep. The melodic sounds of Beethoven&apos;s Pastoral coming from his radio alarm clock brought him out of his dreams. He reached for the reading light switch, then checked his watch--6:30 a.m., and another day of work. As he got up, the darkness outside reminding him of winter coincided with the soft voice of the all night disk jockey forecasting the fall of four inches of snow. Warm beads of water beating on his face removed all remnants of sleep and, like a stimulant, the morning shower brought thoughts of yesterday and plans for a new day. These carried over as he looked himself in the mirror while shaving and brushing his teeth.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

"Excavation and initial support of the New Irvington Tunnel presented significant challenges, including rapidly changing ground conditions, heavy ground loads, and squeezing. Such behaviors were anticipated from historic tunneling records of the adjacent Existing Irvington Tunnel, and extensive site investigation, but clearer understanding of their actual extent and causes has resulted from convergence measurements, observations of ground behavior, initial support monitoring and detailed geologic mapping. Time-dependent movements, documented hours to months after excavation in clay-rich rock and in moderately to intensely fractured rock, identified squeezing areas, allowed classification by currently-used predictive methods and added to the list of lessons learned in tunneling such ground. INTRODUCTION In March 2003 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) authorized funding for the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade its water system. The program consists of 35 local projects located within San Francisco and 48 regional projects located in several counties from the Sierra foothills to the San Francisco Bay Area. The New Irvington Tunnel (NIT), a key component of the WSIP, is located east of Fremont in Alameda County, on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The NIT is a new 18,660 foot (5,689 m), redundant tunnel, 190 to 670 feet (58–204 m) offset from, and subparallel to the Existing Irvington Tunnel (EIT). Built between 1928 and 1932, the EIT was constructed with an unreinforced cast-in-place concrete lining and is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake along the two closest active faults. The Hayward Fault is located less than a mile west of the tunnel, and the Calaveras Fault is located half a mile east of the tunnel. Although the alignment does not intersect these faults, the shaking and sympathetic displacement along secondary faults that cross the tunnel alignment are potential hazards. The NIT provides a seismically reliable water transmission facility capable of withstanding earthquake damage and maintaining continuous water service after a major earthquake. The NIT also adds system redundancy and provides for operation flexibility of running water through both tunnels, or through one tunnel while the other is out of service for inspections and maintenance."

Large-scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogemus (SAG) mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to tab advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semiautogemus mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and jive variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

Canada has played a significant role in the international uranium industry for some three decades. Although there have been many challenges in the past, the future offers a more extensive range of problems and prospects as Canada moves to expand its activities in all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. World uranium demand could grow to an annual requirement of 500,000 tons U308 by the year 2000. A substantial fraction of this material is likely to come from Canada because the country&apos;s reserves and resources are large, and because of a favourable geological potential for future discoveries. There has been a long history of association between the producing industry and the federal government, and it has provided the foundation for existing national uranium policies. Close industry-government association will be maintained and developed in future because of the anticipated rapid growth of the industry and the consequent need for continual refinement of government policies relating to exploration, mining, processing and export of uranium.

Phosphate mines in Florida are continuing to encounter higher dolomitic content host rock with the phosphate pebbles(1) necessitating a change in grinding conditions and/or circuits, One of these changes is to install hydrocyclones and close circuit the mill as opposed to the traditional open circuit grinding plant. Close circuiting of the grinding mill with hydrocyclones allows one to take advantage of reduced process mill power requirements by circulating the coarse mill discharge back into the mill for multiple chances of particle breakage. Additionally, as in this case, the hydrocyclones de-slime the pebbles, allowing for more efficient use of grinding power by reducing the amount of dolomitic material recycled to the mill.
