"Over 600 longwall panels have been mined in Pennsylvania in the last 50 years. Of those 600 panels, 25 panels undermined interstate highways. Despite this quantity of panels, much is still unknown regarding the detailed effects of undermining highways. The Gateway Mine, the Emerald Mine, and the Cumberland Mine undermined I-79 with 17 panels between 1982–1989 and 2003–2008, respectively; mine Eighty-Four undermined I-70 with 4 panels between 1987–2000.Through the examination of the panels that undermined I-70 and I-79, it is possible to determine which factors have most impacted the highway alignments. In some locations, the highway intersects with panels at angles ranging from 45 to 80 degrees, and at others, it runs between two panels, which simulates the effect of gateroads on the subsidence. The panels width to overburden ratio varies between 0.64 and 1.7, meaning that the interstates were influenced by both subcritical and supercritical subsidence basins. The face advance rates and overburden depths also vary between the panels.Unfortunately, specific information detailing highway impacts associated with unique characteristics of the subsidence basins are limited. However, using the profile function model and influence function model within the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS), the effects of overburden, panel size, and orientation of the road to highway can be indirectly assessed by profile and influence models of subsidence basin formation.INTRODUCTIONCoal mining has been an integral part of Pennsylvania’s history. Room-and-pillar mines have been active since the late-1700s when coal was extracted from outcrops. By 1830, the city of Pittsburgh alone consumed more than 400 tons of bituminous coal each day for domestic and industrial use (PADEP, 2019). In the late 1960s, the face of mining in Pennsylvania changed with the development of full extraction longwall mines. Since that development, over 600 longwall panels have been mined in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Pennsylvania alone (PADEP, 2019).As longwall mining and other forms of full extraction mining have increased in popularity, the amount of planned subsidence impacting the surface has also increased. The stresses and strains induced by longwall subsidence can cause damage to the surface as well any structures, water supplies, or water bodies that lie above the panel. Since the behavior of soils and structures vary, one way to study the surface effects of longwall mining is to analyze the impact on flat, rigid, pavement surfaces. Examining factors that vary the impact of subsidence with respect to highway alignment can demonstrate the favorable orientation of an alignment to avoid or mitigate damage and critical impact zones in a subsidence basin."

Placing a detonating explosive inside a volume of rock is an efficient method of rock fragmentation. The explosion generates internal tensile stresses in the rock, and because rock is a brittle material, this brings about crack propagation and fragmentation far more efficiently than does application of explosive on the surface. To get the explosive inside, we drill a pattern of boreholes and charge the explosive into the holes. This is really the one and only purpose of making blastholes in mining: to give access for the explosive to the interior of the rock. No matter how big and expensive a drilling jumbo we stand up in front of a rock face, and no matter how many boreholes we let it drill, the rock does not fall apart by itself without blasting. It is the action of the explosive in the boreholes that does it. When we consider that we need a pound or two of explosive for every cubic yard of rock to be fragmented, and a pint of borehole volume for each pound of explosive, we see that the process of blasthole charging is an important element in the whole process of rock blasting.

With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and =5.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.

A high-energy economy based on fossil fuels is in fundamental conflict with an ideal of clean air, clean water, undisturbed scenery, and maintenance of fragile ecosystems. There is an inevitable trade-off between the material standard of living of a modern society and the conservation of its environment. During the past four years, some of the costs of environmental protection have been internalized in the energy-flow system of the United States. The cost of bituminous coal and fuel oil usable under new air-quality standards has doubled or more. The cost of mining coal underground has risen because of a 20-30 percent reduction in productivity resulting from new environmental health and safety legislation; the economic impact of proposed surface-mine regulation may be equally severe. The cost of producing electric power has been rising at a 12 percent annual rate because of environmental costs, and would be climbing still more steeply were it not for the continued forced subsidy of natural-gas consumers by natural-gas producers. The efficiency of the automobile, already a monument to the triumph of self- indulgence over economy, is being further decreased by addition of anti-pollution devices. Part of the recent sharp rise in agricultural costs stems from the fact that five energy units of fossil fuel go into U.S. agriculture for every energy unit of raw food that leaves the farm; further large injections of fossil-fuel energy occur in the transport, processing, and refrigeration of farm products.

This paper presents an engineering approach to solve a complex ground control problem at reduced cost, allowing the mine to be operated safely and economically. The mine has experienced serious and complicated cutter roof problem in the entries. This cutler roof problem has delayed the advance of the entry development considerably and cost of these entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports. The analysis includes assessment of the cause of cutter roof and step by step action taken to improve the entry condition through appropriate longwall panel entry design and roof support system. The approach for solving the problem was two-fold: 1) to apply yield pillar concept in order to reduce the effects of in-situ horizontal stress in the roof strata and 2) to find an effective way to reinforce the roof strata and to support the fractured roof and avoid caving.

A modified 3D Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm is presented that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher aver-age value) branches. The final set of strong branches are listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single variable pit limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been applied at Newmont.

Since the introduction of froth flotation, the Florida Phosphate Industry has faced the challenge of coarse particle -850 +425µm (-20 +35 Tyler mesh) beneficiation. Several techniques have been used to upgrade this difficult size range. This paper discusses one approach that has met with success; namely, improved fractional recoveries through enhanced areation and improved material transport characteristics via larger than standard flotation cell mechanisms.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. The effects of coal cleaning, coal combustion and flue gas particulate removal systems on the partitioning of 12 trace elements were investigated. This study was prepared to help document the fate of trace elements in modern coal preparation plants and coal-fired utility boilers. The coal cleaning data were obtained from several coal preparation plant operations. The CONSOL 1. 5 MM Btu/hr pilot combustion and electrostatic precipitator (particulate removal system) test facility was used to develop the combustion systems data. A comparison with the very limited amount of published data from utility boilers is presented.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

The future phosphate rock deposits in South Florida contain a significant fraction of dolomite. The high MgO content of the rock is undesirable in the production of phosphoric acid. Several flotation schemes have been attempted to separate dolomite from phosphate rock. Alternately, Selective Flocculation process has been suggested to separate dolomite from apatite. A high MgO content rock was simulated by a 30:10:60 synthetic mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the mixed mineral systems apatite-silica and dolomite-silica with Polyacrylic acid (PM) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants respectively but not realized in apatite-dolomite system with PEO flocculant. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for loss in selectivity, was minimized by addition of a Site Blocking Agent (lower molecular weight fraction of PEO). Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage, and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed mineral tests was translated into the ternary mixed mineral system, viz. apatite-dolomite-silica. In this presentation surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior will be discussed.
