Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). Characterization and analysis of multiphase particles and/or particulate systems (such as the packed particle bed) are of great technological importance for mineral processing applications. In general the performance of these applications depends on the statistical characteristics of particle microstructures, such as composition distribution, surface exposure of mineral grains, pore network structure, etc. For continued technological progress in the field of multiphase particulate processes, the need for quantitative spatial analysis of multiphase particles in three dimensions has increased sign6cantly. Such quantitative information must be accurate enough that the measured values can be used as parameters for simulation models, process design procedures, and control strategies. Modern 3D image-acquisition techniques, such as X-ray microtomography (XMT), offer a unique imaging capability that can produce high-resolution (a few micrometers) three-dimensional images of the internal structure of multiphase particulate samples. These three-dimensional image data present new challenges for image analysis, image processing, and visualization. Furthermore, important issues should focus on how to use the 3D information and derive new insights into the improvement, design, and operation of mineral processing processes. In this paper, utilization of XMT for characterization and analysis of leaching process involving multiphase particulate system is discussed.

Gate-road yield pillars are subject to increases in stress as the longwall face advances toward the pillars. Increases in pillar stress can be inferred by measuring roof/floor convergence surrounding the pillar. This paper presents a case study of convergence measurements surrounding a two-entry gate-road yield pillar in the head gate of a coal mine. Convergence was measured over a six-month period, as the longwall face approached and passed the pillar. Measurements were collected at eight locations surrounding the pillar: four locations in the travelway and four locations in the beltway. In addition to convergence stations, the pillar was instrumented with an array of seismometers. In future analysis, convergence measurements will be compared to seismic interpretations. This study reports on the geology and geometry of the longwall panel, the roof and rib support, the change in convergence over time, and the physical properties of coal and parting. Additionally, the convergence measurements are compared to pillar safety factor distributions derived from a finite element model. The convergence measurements contribute to the knowledge of when yield pillar abutment loading, caused by the encroaching longwall, is first detected. Knowing when abutment loading begins to yield the pillars can help define when standing secondary roof supports are required for head gate entry support.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

Abstract. World reserves of bauxite are abundant. Domestic reserves are limited and as a consequence the United States must rely on foreign suppliers for over 90 percent of its bauxite. Nationalization of many bauxite mining operations, levying of higher taxes, increased production and transportation costs, and attempts to create a uniform market price combined to place the United States in a vulnerable position. Alumina from kaolin, alunite, anorthosite, and oil shale have-been-or are being evaluated. World bauxite reserves are increasing and attempts to establish a uniform price have failed; therefore, it may be many years before domestic non-bauxite sources of alumina can compete with imported foreign bauxite.

INTRODUCTION Production of chrysotile asbestos from the northern Appalachians has been going on for 100 years and, on the basis of known reserves and the present rates of mining, appears assured of continued production for at least another 25 to 30 years. In spite of this, mining companies and government agencies are showing an increasing interest in exploring for chrysotile asbestos throughout this region and elsewhere in the world, implying that increases in the rate of consumption are envisioned. This chapter describes the geologic and tectonic settings surrounding these important chrysotile deposits, with emphasis on those in southern Quebec that yield about 90% of the total production from the northern Appala- chians. Detailed descriptions of a few individual deposits are also given, along with exploration guidelines aimed at facilitating the discovery of additional chrysotile deposits. One section of this chapter deals with the origin and mode of formation of the chrysotile deposits in the light of modern day concepts of plate tectonics. The objectives of this chapter are to give a brief description of the geologic and tectonic settings of the ultramafic rocks in which the numerous chrysotile deposits of the northern Appalachians are found; to describe a few of the individual deposits; to give a few exploration guidelines for those interested in exploring for new asbestos deposits in similar geologic environments; and to propose a new model for asbestos genesis in light of the recently developed theories of global tectonics. As this chapter is based almost entirely on field and laboratory observations, rather than on the study of experimental laboratory models, most of our deductions and suggestions are empirical in nature and may be interpreted in more than one way. The interpretations we have selected seem to offer, we feel, the best explanation of observed geological phenomena (Lamarche and Wicks, 1975). This region had a production capability in 1979 of close to p.5 Mt of chrysotile asbestos with 92% of this tonnage being derived from the deposits of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. With known resources, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fibers, this production capability seems assured for the next few decades. In spite of all known reserves of chrysotile asbestos, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fiber in this region alone, mining companies and government agencies are still showing a good deal of interest in exploring for new sources throughout the world. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The asbestos deposits at Baie Verte in eastern Newfoundland, Thetford Mines, Black Lake, Asbestos in southern Quebec, and Belvidere Mountain in Vermont, all occur in partly serpentinized ultramafic rocks that are part of the Lower Paleozoic ophiolite complexes of the northern Appalachians [Cady, Albee, Chidester, 1963, Chidester, Albee, Cady, 1978, Lamarche, 1972,1973, Laurent, 1973,1975, Williams, Hibbard, Bursnall, 1977, Norman and Strong, 1975). The deposits to the northeast of Thetford Mines, on the other hand, are found in a more highly serpentinized ultramafic body known as the Pennington dike, whose spatial, genetic, and chronological links with the ophiolite masses proper have not as yet been adequately resolved. The ability to treat refractory gold concentrates that contain appreciable amounts of sulfur and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner is important to the gold mining industry. Processing alternatives include: autoclave oxidation, bacterial oxidation and roasting. Roasting may be the cheapest of all the alternatives if inexpensive methods can be found to contain the arsenic and sulfur. The research program, being reported here, has been evaluating the ability to use hydrated lime in the roaster to capture both the arsenic and the sulfur. Lime roasting is not a new idea, it was proposed for copper ores by Bartlett in the early 1970's (Bartlett and Haung 1973) and for cobaltite concentrates by Taylor in the early 1980's (Taylor et al., 1981). In addition, ores have been roasted that contained limestone and it was shown that partial capture of the sulfur was possible. Lime -sulfur containment has been proposed for the coal fired electricity industry, as well.

Laboratory tests were conducted in a full-scale continuous miner test gallery to evaluate resulting dust levels for changes in face airflow, spray water quantity and pressure, and mining height. The minimum and maximum values tested for each parameter were as follows: airflows between 1.42 and 6.14 m3/sec, water flows between 56.8 and 132.5 lpm, nozzles pressures between 413 and 1379 kPa, and mining heights between 1.52 and 2.74 m. Each of these parameters were evaluated for four common spray system designs. Respirable dust samples were collected in the operator's cab on the miner and in the immediate return. Second-order polynomial models were used to represent expected dust levels and multiple stepwise regression was used to identify significant control parameters for inclusion in the models. Separate models were developed for dust levels at the operator and return locations and for each individual spray system. Interaction between control parameters and curvature effects were found in most models. The analysis indicated that at the operator location, airflow and mining height had the most significant impact on respirable dust levels. In the return, airflow and water pressure were typically the most significant parameters. The models developed for each spray system design can be used by mine operators to guide application of control parameters for a variety of operating conditions and mining heights.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Company into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on the laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 34% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh/ton) of 33%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

Thermovision monitoring of surface temperature has been examined for the purpose of detection of spontaneous combustion of early stage. Measurements were carried out in bituminous and subbituminous coal mines. It was found that surface temperature heterogenities can be considered as common phenomenon in mine openings. However, the most of the observed temperature heterogenities were not connected with coal spontaneous combustion of early stage. These, so called [non-spontaneous combustion] temperature heterogenities in surface of mine openings were found to be caused by: l. Different conditions of heat transfer between opening surface and air stream; 2. Low temperature (natural) oxidation of coal; 3. Dissipated heat loses of working machine. Sites of early stage spontaneous combustion of coal were characterized by: 1. More significant, local rise in surface temperature comparing with low temperature coal oxidation; 2. Evolution of carbon monoxide with local concentration near the surface of such site more than about 15 ppm (bituminous coals) or 30 ppm (subbituminous coals). INTRODUCTION Mine fires are a serious hazard to life and result in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Thus, great attention is paid to investigation of new methods enabling already early detection of self-heating of coal. The earlier a fire is observed, the easier would it be to deal with. Detection methods used in coal mines are mainly based on: 1. [Mine air analysis]. Changes in composition of mine air are examined. Products of spontaneous heating of coal, not being present in mine air under normal conditions, are considered as indicators of anomalous behaviour of coal (carbon monoxide, unsaturated hydrocarbons) (Mackenzie-Wood and Strang, 1990). 2. [Temperature measurements]. Sites of higher temperature level comparing surroundings are looking for underground using various direct or indirect methods of temperature measurements. This paper summarizes experience from thermovision monitoring, as one of the latest indirect temperature measurement technique, used for the purpose of early detection of self-heating of coal in mine openings. INFRARED THERMOVISION Infrared thermovision device of AGEMA Infrared systems AB (Sweden) was used for the in situ measurements. The constant value of emissivity factor, 0.95, was pre-set as the most probable level of emissivities of coal and rocks in mine conditions.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

With the depletion of easy-to-treat phosphate resources, low quality phosphate ores with high carbonates, particularly dolomite impurities have to be mined to meet the agricultural demand because of the continued growth of world population. The separation of dolomite from phosphate has been recognized as one of the most difficult subjects in mineral processing due to the similarities in their physical and chemical properties. Flotation is considered the most important approach for beneficiating both easy-to-treat and high impurity phosphate resources. There is no doubt that the development of reagents is the key for achieving satisfactory separation performance through flotation process. In order to separate dolomite from phosphate, Arr-Maz Custom Chemicals has made great efforts in developing flotation reagents for removal of carbonates from phosphate ores of different origins worldwide. This paper describes some flotation reagents and processes for the separation of dolomite or/and calcite impurities from phosphate in the ores from different locations.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, one and one-half miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Company operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica, and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Footers Sunbright, Virginia plant and to other customers. Exton, Pennsylvania and New Johnsonville, Tennessee plants produce lithium compounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market, and to the glass industry. Ceramic grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation.

The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.

In order to filter small amounts of fine slimy solids the reversible cake-filtration process was developed. The filterable solids contents lion in feeds can range from less than 1 ppm up to about 5%. The relative advantages of this process, are usually the greatest in the range of 0.05% to 1.0% filterable solids. Filterable solids that average in particle size about 20 microns& are non-compressible are very easy for this filtration process. Some feeds have been all sub-micron in particle size. A 1/8 inch thick cake is considered to be very thick. The usual cake is between 13/2 and 1/16 inch thick. A new line of injection molded plastic filter plates were developed for use with the reversible cake filtration process. The first commercial sized installation of this system was made 3 years ago in the Wakefield Y.M.C.A. swimming pool. Over 70 filters ranging in size from one plate to 63 plates have been produced. In addition to the process advantages there are the low cost and corrosion resistance advantages of the plastic plates.

SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

The valuable Maximum Utilization Factor (MUF) concept has been extended to other rotating excavators beyond stripping shovels and draglines. In this concept the boom reach and bucket capacity are multiplied to get an MUF, then normalized by dividing by the equipment weight. Statistical analyses were applied to the remaining shovels (hydraulic and cable), draglines, and backhoes. Positive correlations were found. Stripping shovels and draglines were also re-examined. The results provide an estimate of equipment diggability and encourage versatility by the interchange of the boom and the bucket. The concept further clarifies the existing equipment classification by delineating general excavating, loading, and stripping kinds. The results also forecast trends, and noted innovative advances and possible retrogression. Extension to other boom excavators, such as front-end loaders is recommended. The MUF concept provides one of the few indices of gross external characteristics available to the engineer-user of equipment.

INTRODUCTION Flotation equipment is becoming more definitive in design as well as greater in dimension. The last ten years have witnessed the implementation of large flotation cells ranging in size from 28 to 85 cubic meters. However, small plants still operate with cells as small as 3 cubic meters. These changes have increased the operational sensitivity of the flotation system to the chemical reagents used. No scientific study has been undertaken to develop the relationship between the size of equipment and the response of reagents in the flotation system. Hence, this article is an attempt to present several observations from past experience for the purpose of stimulating future research in an area previously ignored and perhaps subsequently not used to advantage. CONVENTIONAL FLOTATION Recent advances in conventional flotation cell design have been made in two areas: a. Flotation cells are becoming larger, and b. Basic design of flotation cells has changed. They can be classified into two types: deep cell and shallow draft cell. Size and design changes of flotation cells have a greater effect on frother performance than on the performance of other chemical reagents. Hence, the discussion in the following sections is restricted to the impact of frothers in the flotation system. Flotation Cell Size The advent of increasing flotation cell size has resulted in the increase of frother consumption. There appears to be a correlation between reduced horsepower (kilowatt) consumption and increased frother consumption per ton of ore processed in the circuit. This is more prevalent when the frother chemistry remains unchanged. Another reason for increased frother consumption is the increased distance between the rotating central shaft and the lip of the cell for larger flotation machines. Increasing this distance results in increased surface area corresponding to the larger cell size. Reduced power input per ton combined with the need for longer, stronger load support of the froth bubble as a result of increasing cell size has resulted in the development of a new series of stronger and more persistent frothers. By the same token, these newer, stronger frothers are difficult to control when applied to the smaller cells. This is true even at lower dosages because the break point between too much frother and not enough frother for optimum metallurgy is normally very narrow. This problem is often exaggerated when operators have established an optimum setting for pulp level and air for the particular frother in use. Generally, the tendency is to operate the flotation cells simply by adjusting frother dosage. The increase in frother strength to accommodate the large cells often results in the realization, after a retrofit, that the existing pump box or sump which is still handling the same volume of concentrate is no longer adequate in size. Flotation Cell Design The two most common flotation cell designs installed during the past ten years are the deep cell and the shallow draft cell. The deep cell provides for complete mixing of air and pulp at the bottom of the cell. The shallow draft cell does all the mixing/pumping in the bottom haft of the cell whereas the mixing of the air is performed further up the shaft and is brought into contact with the pulp midway up the vortex. There are many preferences for one or the other. It is the author's contention that both designs have very valid concepts and must simply be suited to the particular situation as required by the operator. The following comments are subjective observations which should be explored in greater detail. The deep cell mixes both air and pulp together at the bottom of the cell requiring a full depth ascending of the homogenized air to the surface to form the froth layer. This design, in combination with charged air, provides for good concentrate grade control under adverse conditions of selectivity, especially when faced with a fine grind and a slime-laden gangue. A selective frother can be applied without a competitive loss in recovery. One of the conditions for good selectivity in this environment is operating at medium pulp solids concentration in the range of twenty-six to thirty-four per cent (26-34%). When a higher solids concentration is used in combination with a coarse grind, it becomes difficult to maintain the same recovery with a selective frother due to higher pulp viscosity. This condition sometimes results in an unacceptable coalescence of the air bubbles as they ascend the full height of the deep cell. The increased pulp viscosity at higher solids concentration can also retard the flotation kinetics. The combination of decreased surface area of dispersed air and slower kinetics can result in reduced recovery causing coarse particles to continue to drop

The first step in the quarrying of granite, following removal of any overburden material, involves the freeing of large blocks from the formation. For many years the use of explosives was the accepted method of obtaining these blocks. Even today there are operations where this is considered to be the most economical method even though it does result in a high percentage of damaged stone. In more recent times the preferred procedure at most quarries has been to produce a continuous vertical cut or slot completely around the block to be separated. Originally, this was done by drilling a series of closely spaced holes around the block and breaking the web between the holes with a chisel-like tool known as a broaching bar. The machine used in this mechanical method of producing the relief slot is known as the channel bar. The modern day approach to the production of continuous channels was introduced to the industry around 1955 by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation. The method employs a small rocket - jet burner producing a high temperature, high velocity exhaust flame which when directed against the granite causes it to disintegrate. This method, which has come to be known as "Jet Channeling", is now used by practically every major granite producer in the United States and Canada.
