Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

The results of leaching experiments in columns simulating 80 and 200 ft deep cores through a leach dump are discussed, By equipping the columns with can precipitation plants, actual plant conditions could be duplicated. The results produced a better understanding of the physical and chemical limitations of the leaching process.

An experimental study was carried out to compare the results of laboratory column flotation versus conventional flotation for the cleaning of fine coals of different rank and their oxidized samples as well as discrete size fractions. Surface oxidation caused a significant reduction in the flotation yields achieved with both methods. However, the column flotation produced concentrates? of lower ash content. The recovery -size curve achieved with column was similar in shape to that obtained with conventional cell, with superior results in the region of fine fractions. The influence of some column operating parameters was also discussed.

Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. Introduction Charles III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, established one of the first mining schools in Europe on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbanya (Schemnitz in German and Banska Stiavmica in Slovakian). The old city, built around the ancient gold mines, is shown in a contemporary engraving in Fig. 1. Charles' historical decree consisted of 13 chapters and included: the deed of foundation, the definition of grants, instruction for educational policy and curriculum, disciplinary rules, and the appointment of personnel. The first professor of the school, Samuel Mikoviny, gave his first lecture the same year, in December 1735. The 250th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Mines was celebrated Sept. 2-4, 1985, in Miskolc. It was attended by representatives of other Hungarian and of several foreign technical universities. A silver medallion (Fig. 2) was issued to commemorate the occasion and a series of lectures

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

"INTRODUCTION Moisture can be a villain, so new technologies have been explored to make more viable the production of high moisture iron ores. The current work presents the attempt of the utilization of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) to aid in the screening process and in the ore handling process, such as stockpiles reclaiming and vessels/trains discharge in sub-zero temperature conditions. The results have shown that the polymer can be used in certain cases to improve productivity and increase safety in the process of handling the material (by increasing the TML). However, for size separation no advantages were found upon the use of the polymers. WATER ADSORPTION MECHANISMS The use of water in mineral processing is constant as its utilization brings an increase in the efficiency of separation. Although we have better results in the processing with water, materials with a high content of “natural” moisture can be very difficult to be treated by the conventional methods of separation. Nowadays many studies have been conducted in order to understand the effect of adsorption of water in the particles of complex minerals. Those studies have being divided in many different lines of research such as contact angle of a drop of water and the surface of the mineral to determine hydrophobicity, the particle size distribution and the porosity of particles. Mainly two forms of adsorption of water by the particles are possible: one the water is retained inside porosity of the particles. Laboratory tests developed in China have showed that capillary adsorption is faster in coarser particles that achieve the saturation degree earlier than finer particles (Xuewei Lv et al., 2011). The so called non-porous model considers the effect of water in the bulk sample of iron ores, in a physical connection when all the water works as a binder between particles as shown in the figure 1.If we take into account the compressibility of the system and compaction due to the weight of the bed over the particles, the thickness of the water film between particles is the same but the volume inside different particle size systems is much higher than in a system with particles of same size."

"This work focuses on the extraction of rare earth metals (REE) from aqueous solutions using stimuli-responsive polymers. Various parameters affecting the adsorption capacity of the polymer, including pH, polymer concentration and REE concentration were studied. The interfacial behavior of REE in aqueous phase before and after polymer addition and the mechanism of the formation of metal-polymer complexes and their properties were investigated using UV/VIS spectroscopy. Results obtained would help to test the feasibility of employing stimuli responsive polymers in pre-concentration of rare earth elements associated with other elements in mineral aqueous streams prior to solvent extraction. The pre-concentration step would reduce the amount of organic solvents used for extraction and striping compared to conventional extraction processes. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have become the foundation for several technologies and have been used extensively in many industries such as modern electronics, green energy, health care and transportation and defense [1-4]. As these industry sectors are growing, the global consumption of REEs is going to increase dramatically. The current global REEs demand is estimated to be 105,000 tons of rare earth oxides per annum with an expected annual growth of 5.6% [5-6]. Rare earth elements are produced from different sources (primary and secondary). China is considered as the largest producer of REE in the world, providing about 90% of the world’s mine production while the United States is second with 4% of the mine production [7]. High global demand for rare earth materials results in shortage of such materials in the near future. It should be considered that the term ‘‘rare’’ earth is not an accurate term, since they are abundant in some extent in the Earth’s crust, but are typically finely dispersed. Thus, nowadays looking for more efficient and cheaper methods for extraction, separation and purification of low concentrated REE ores and exploring secondary sources are essential. Rare earth materials are found in raw condition and require treatment that involves several processes, which can consume money and time. Recent improvements in extraction and recycling technology have made the extraction of rare earth elements from rare earth sources more feasible in terms of cost and time [8-10]. Physical and pyrometallurgical methods require high-energy and thus high costs. Moreover, due to environmental problems, environmental protection systems are required, and they are not as adaptable as chemical processes [11, 12]."

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

The Star-Morning mine is a. 1000-ton-per-day lead-zinc producer located in the easterly part of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of North Idaho. The property includes both the Star and Morning mines which are located on the westerly and easterly portions of the same complex of veins. The mine is 70% owned by the Bunker Hill Company (Gulf Resources, Inc.) of Kellogg, Idaho, 30% owned by Hecla Mining Company, and operated by Hecla Mining Company with head-quarters in Wallace, Idaho. One of the characteristics of mines in the Coeur d'Alene District is that many of the ore bodies extend to very great depths. The Star is no exception, but rather a leading example. The complex of near vertical veins and ore shoots extend some 7000 feet below the surface at present, with a maximum strike length of about 4000 feet. Ore has been mined on 20 separate veins and ore structures. More than 50 miles of headings have been driven and nearly 23 million tons of ore mined since the Morning mine started in.189S. The problems of mining at such depths are formidable temperature on the bottom level is 1100 F and high humidity problem. Pressure from the sheer weight of rock is as high foot. This paper will deal with providing a new access to the deeper levels of the mine and the installation of a hoist and related items to service these levels. By the time development had reached the 7100 level (Figure 1), it became apparent that a different 'hoisting system was going to be necessary if we were going to continue to mine at a profit. The main shaft extended to the 4000 level at which point a ?:3100"'foot winze shaft provided access to the 7100 level. The two hoists were limited to handling 3-ton payloads at 1200 to 1500 feet per minute. Some ores are still produced from above the 4000 level but as these ore reserves become depleted the hoisting of the desired tonnage (1000+/day-) from the lower levels of the mine would exceed the capacity of the existing hoisting system. A decision was made to sink a new vertical shaft at a point well in the south wall of the ore bodies where strong rocks and a minimum of faulting was expected and to purchase and install a new hoist capable of hoisting over 7000 feet. This new' shaft, designated as the No. 4 Shaft, was planned to reach 2000 feet below the 7100 level which was the deepest level at that time. The hoist would be in-stalled on the ,main 2000 Adit level which is used as an access and haulage level to the concentrator and surface plant in Burke.

Barium fluorophlogopites were synthesized in the laboratory to investigate the effects of composition and crystal parameters on surface properties and floatability. The negative surface charge of mica is determined by the barium content, the crystal cell volume, the distance between the layer structure and the Ba-O bond length. The higher the barium content, the larger the cell volume and distance between the layer structure, and the longer the Ba-0 bond, the more negatively charged the surface is, and, hence, the more easily adsorbed are cationic collectors. When an anionic collector (sodium oleate) is used, barium oleate forms on the mica surface and hence chemical adsorption occurs.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines studied the suitability of using flexible tendon cable supports as secondary roof supports at a western coal mine. The supports were installed in longwall tailgate entries and grouted into the mine roof. This paper quantifies how the use of cable supports can improve ventilation in underground airways. A mine ventilation simulator was used to model the changes in airway resistance and airflow and show potential for further ventilation improvements when cable supports are used. Model results indicated that cable support use translated to savings in air pressure around the longwall panel and increased airflow at the longwall face.

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

"Composite sprayed concrete lining (SCL), consisting of two layers of permanent sprayed concrete separated by a layer of spray-applied waterproofing membrane, represents the latest development in SCL tunneling, but presents several challenges to designers. This paper aims to address the following issues: (1) how to simulate composite action, (2) behavior of a composite SCL tunnel, and (3) how to utilize composite action to achieve lining thickness efficiency. It firstly sets out the background to the composite SCL concept, and then presents a strategy for numerical investigation. The main part of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the simulation results, focusing on the lining deformation, load sharing and the safety margin of both linings. Interface stresses are also examined. It is found that significant secondary lining thickness reduction may be achieved by utilizing composite action. Challenges for the design of composite SCL tunnels are briefly discussed at the end. INTRODUCTION Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnelling has seen rapid development over the last twenty years in the UK (Su 2013). One of these developments has been the replacement of traditional sheet membrane and cast in situ secondary lining with innovative spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining system, which has been adopted in recent major projects, such as Crossrail (Pickett 2013), and brings many benefits to the construction (Dimmock et al. 2013). The combination of sprayed primary lining, spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining is perceived to provide a structurally efficient lining system that outperforms the traditional lining system, which consists of sacrificial primary lining, sheet waterproofing membrane and cast in situ secondary lining. The claimed benefits in structural performance arises from the composite action between the sprayed primary and secondary linings via the spray applied waterproofing membrane, which produces a much stiffer cross-section and therefore a more efficient use of materials. Early investigations on the design of composite SCL tunnels were carried out without (1) definite and reliable long-term interface parameters, (2) a verified numerical modelling technique, or (3) consideration of different stress histories between primary and secondary linings (Thomas and Pickett 2011, Marcher et al. 2011). This paper reports the findings from a numerical parametric study on a typical composite SCL tunnel with varied secondary lining thickness. The results show that the true benefit of composite lining arises from the optimisation of the lining thickness (stiffness) ratio between the primary and secondary linings to achieve secondary lining safety and thickness efficiency at the same time."

The Kennecott Utah Copper Modernization Project, initiated in 1986, was directed to provide an expansion and modernization of mining and process facilities at the property's Bingham Canyon Mine and ore concentrators. Major components in the project included installation of an in-pit ore crusher, transfer conveying system, and construction of a new copper ore concentrator with a design capacity basis of 70,000 tonnes/day. The Copperton Concentrator was commissioned in February 1988. A principal feature of the plant is the grinding circuit, comprised of three identical lines, each consisting of a 10.37 m (diameter) by 4.57 m (length) Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and two 5.54 m (diameter) by 8.62 m (length) ball mills. The SAG mills are driven by two variable-speed 9,000 kW DC motors coupled through a clutch-pinion gear-ring gear assembly. The ball mills are driven by 4,125 kW synchronous motors coupled through a typical clutch-pinion gear-ring gear system. The expansion and particularly the Copperton Concentrator performance was so successful that by early 1989, management began examining options to further expand production capacity. With regards to the concentrator, numerous alternatives were considered, ranging from installation of a grinding line similar to one of the existing lines, to a "super" line consisting of a 12.8 meter (diameter) SAG mill and a 20,000 kW motor with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per day. The technical and economic analysis of the various scenarios indicated that one "large" 11.0 meter (diameter) by 4.88 meter (length) SAG mill with a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes per day and a 12,000 kW drive would be optimum. The key question to be answered in the project was whether to continue with the pinion-ring gear combination, or install a gearless drive. The following paper outlines many of the items that were evaluated in the mill selection process followed by actual plant performance, and a discussion of ongoing plant continuous improvement projects.

The most common method used for cleaning the fine fraction in today's coal preparation plants is froth flotation. Past research and practice has found that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, its efficiency decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases due to the flotation of high-ash particles having a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the coal surface. Since gravity-based processes are much more efficient at treating middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine coal cleaning has been studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine circuit feed. Results will be shown from a parametric study using a Falcon centrifugal concentrator which reveals that the separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content, and feed rate.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in southwestern Chihuahua State, Mexico. The prospect was discovered by a Francisco Gold Corp. geologist in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grass-root exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas Silver Camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiary age. The mineralization appears to be both structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite. The deposit’s gold distribution, as recorded from drill-hole data and surface samples, varies from 0.2 to 650.0 g/t. The estimated geological resource, as calculated from an independent study completed in 1998, was 3.0 million oz @ 2.03 g/t including a minable reserve of1.8 million oz @ 3.3 g/t.

Selective flocculation is used for the purification of clay minerals. Here we present data from a surface spectroscopic investigation into the polyacrylamides mediated selective flocculation of kaolin from an impure matrix. Use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was shown to offer a useful approach for investigating the observed selective separations. In particular, a new small area XPS technique was used to characterize, in situ, the differential competitive, f1occulant adsorption onto mixed kaolin/gangue systems.
