After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducing bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the pores of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also expanded reserves in a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore occurrences. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of June 1, 1984, a total of 29.87 million mt (29.4 million long tons) of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos River. Duval corporation has produced more than 88 percent of that total.

Flotation control systems in use around the world today owe their effectiveness to the coordinated use of appropriate sensors, control hardware, and decision-making strategies. This paper traces the development of these three main elements of the "control triangle" over time. Based on an analysis of recent developments, it is concluded that improvements occurring in instrumentation have basically been evolutionary, while advances in hardware and strategies have, in contrast, been revolutionary. An attempt is made to extrapolate developments in each of the "control triangle" elements into the future in order to make a projection concerning flotation control systems for the next millenium.

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

This paper addresses the valuation and development timing of an undeveloped mineral project. Traditional analysis has us developing the project immediately if its net present value (NPV) is positive. Option pricing theory finds that it is better to wait until the NPV of the property is significantly greater than zero before developing. Alternatively, when evaluating the development timing decision, we must calculate NPV using a higher "timing-adjusted" discount rate, and develop the property only if its NPV using this timing-adjusted discount rate is greater than zero. This paper uses option pricing ideas to convert this development timing advice into a more concrete and user-friendly decision rule: develop the project when its "development-timing NPV" is positive, this development-timing NPV being calculated using the normal discount rate.

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

The 1970s have witnessed the completion and successful start-up of several new non-ferrous metallurgical operations in the Western Hemisphere which utilize large semi-autogenous mills in the grinding circuits. These facilities' are arranged either as single-stage circuits, or in a two-stage configuration n with ball mills. Another major concentrator, designed with an autogenous mill, ball mill, crusher (ABC circuit), is presently under construction and scheduled for start-up late this year. The large primary mills employed in these circuits have high diameter-to-length ratios and are designed to accept a very coarse feed, i.e., the product of a primary gyratory crusher, or run-of-mine ore. This characteristic obviates the need for a secondary-tertiary crushing plant or, in selected cases, even a primary crusher, which is a basic requirement in feed preparation for conventional grinding mills. This paper discusses three such grinding circuits and, presents operating data for two of them: the Island Copper Mine of Utah Mines, Ltd., near Port Hardy, British-Columbia,- and the Pueblo Viejo Cyanide Leach Plant of Rosario' Dominicana, S.A. on the island of Hispaniola. The design criteria for the Cyprus Bagdad Concentrator under construction' at Bagdad, Arizona, are also included. Data pertinent to these circuits are tabulated in the Summary.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. The financial analyst's job is to make an objective appraisal of the investment opportunities which exist within the various industries under his supervision within the context of the economic model provided by his firm and the a climate of investor sentiments. Industry analysis is critical. When a major investment trend develops, usually the stock of all companies within the specific industry react in the same direction. I should emphasize here, however, that an investment trend is influenced by the economic outlook, but economics is not the only determinant - investor psychology and arbitrary political factors may be of equal or greater importance. Part of our job is to recognize trends early and determine whether they are valid. Following industry analysis, the analyst must examine the specific companies within that industry since some companies usually react more violently than others to industry trends, whether they be favorable or adverse. To simplify the process of evaluating an investment opportunity, it is convenient to isolate three types of factors which have a bearing on every sort of business although the degree of influence of each factor may vary from industry to industry. These categories are, 1) independent or external factors insofar as they are beyond the control of corporate management, 2) interdependent factors insofar as influence may be exerted by industry-wide action, and 3) dependent factors covering the area of internal decisions which are basically under the control of the individual corporate managers. Although the title of this paper, "The Corporate Use of Cash Flow," is only one segment of the third category, it may be useful to continent on the first two categories as well. The independent factors may be either economic or governmental. The economic factors include cyclicality which may be very high in the case of the basic commodity industries or relatively low as in the case of utilities. La Espingarda kaolin deposit was formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rhyolitic rocks belonging to Jurassic Marifil Formation. Three volcanic lithofacies were identified: porphyric biotitic ignimbrites (PBI), a coarse lithic ignimbrite (ILG), a fluidal intrusive rhyolite (RFI), all kaolinized in different degrees. The alteration covers an ellipsoidal area of ~20,000 m2, with its alteration decreasing downwards and disappearing at 8-12 m from the surface. The length to thickness ratio of alteration is 60:1. An erratic silicification was found as small zones (<3 m2) of quartz stockwork. The mineralogy is kaolinite + quartz + feldspars + Fe-oxyhydroxides ± halloysite ± illite and interstratified I/S, although the relative proportions change in each rock type. Due to coarse grain size and high quartz content, natural kaolin is unsuitable for slip cast ceramics, unless beneficiated. Washed ILG kaolin has the best rheological properties and behavior in casting and drying for its mineralogy, particle size distribution, thin texture and surface activity, as well as a certain fusibility and firing kinetics. PBI and RFI kaolins, due to finer texture, smaller grain size, lower surface activity, and higher halloysite amount, have worse slip viscosity and thixotropy that are due also to soluble salts. For the same reason, they have good casting and drying properties, but their purity brings about higher softening temperatures and water absorption. Several parameters are used to discriminate between hypogene or supergene kaolinite genesis. The hydrothermal genesis is mainly sustained by fluid inclusion temperature (150-180ºC) in quartz veinlets, while weathering is supported by deposit morphology, simple mineralogy, kaolinite stable isotopes (d18O ? 18, 13; dD ? ?59; ?85) and paleoclimatic record. It is concluded that a weathering process formed the main alteration with some participation of steam-heated meteoric waters. Neither the contents of Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, nor drill data support the existence of any epithermal gold mineralization at the kaolinite bottom.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit&apos;s development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts&apos; occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach&apos;s main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.
