A comprehensive strategic planning model has been developed for the phosphate strip mining and chemical operations at White Springs, Florida. The computerized model covers ore body modeling, production simulation and financial analysis. Several innovative features in the model include using NPV techniques in ore body block economics, adapting the floating cone method to a floating template for generating dragline mining units automatically, using interactive graphics for designing mining units, and a dragline move economics algorithm for automatic scheduling of mining unit assignments and moves. Simulation of chemical plant production uses linear programming and concentrate inventory levels control mine operating schedules.

The results of an experimental study on the dispersion and deposition characteristics of fine coal dust in mine airways are presented. Experiments were conducted at various flow velocities using bituminous and semi-anthracite-coal dust which had a large proportion of dust in the respirable size range. Cross sectional variations in the concentration of dust at various points in the airway were also measured. Instruments used in the experiments included gravimetric samplers and impactors. Concentration measurements were made both for the respirable and total airborne dust. The experimental design, sampling procedures and results are discussed. The study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground mine airways.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

The evolution of longwall mining is briefly traced from its inception in England in the 1620's. In the beginning this method recovered 90% of coal with roof closure controlled by packs and walls. Mechanization began with kerf cutting, crude face conveyors, and improved face support. Full face mining was accompanied by the introduction of self-advancing hydraulic supports. U.S. longwalls evolved a retreating system to recover blocks of coal outlined by room and pillar panels. Computer control combined with the most modern technology has greatly increased productivity. Past trends are used to predict future technological directions.

The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control sys- teas to be used when selecting circuits for wash-ing fine coal (28M x 0 size fraction). However, the desliming, declaying and sizing procedures required to ensure efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and dewatering circuit design which is extremely effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 28M x 0 (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

A surprisingly large mining-induced seismic event occurred in the LKAB Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden) on 18 May, 2020 at 03:11 (local time). The estimated moment magnitude was 4.2. The event caused extensive damage in a large section of the mine. The production in the area is not yet resumed, even by the beginning of 2022 (~20 months after the event). The Kiirunavaara Mine has one of the world’s largest underground seismic systems with approximately 253 geophones. The in-mine records of the event showed a very complex character with a several sub-events. The event was also well recorded by seismic stations out to over 9,000 km distance. Data from the underground and regional seismic systems were analysed to define and compare basic source parameters such as hypocenter location, seismic moment, as well as the seismic moment tensor. The data from the in-mine seismic system was used to study the development of the seismic process and to define elementary seismic sub-sources together with the official hypocenter location.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

The 86th Annual Meeting of the SME Minnesota section/74th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium partnered with the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)?s Iron Ore Symposium for a historic joint conference, held this year in Duluth, MN, April 15- 17. One of a flurry of recent collaborations between SME and CIM, the joint conference was a natural fit for the conference held in the heart of the Iron Range. As CIM National President Terence Bowles said in his joint keynote with SME President Jessica Kogel, ?The U.S. imports $51 billion from Canada and Canada imports $38 billion the U.S.; that?s 50 percent of Canada?s exports and 51 percent of its imports.? The two countries? economies are linked, and nowhere more closely than in their iron ore mining activities. Kogel opened the conference with a plenary speech identifying the top 10 issues facing mining and how these issues present opportunities for mining companies. She said that it is important that the mining industry stay flexible and adapt to changing conditions, or it will go the way of the dinosaur. However, she said that these challenges can lead to new opportunities. For example, one of the major challenges facing mining is the current state of risk aversion among investors, which makes for ?less money in the pipeline.? However, this situation creates a better climate for mergers and acquisitions, which is another, less risky way to get funding. Likewise, another challenge globally is geopolitical risk; this challenge is likely to drive growth toward stable countries, which was good news for an audience composed mostly of Minnesota and Canadian mining industry personnel. One of the highlights of Kogel?s address was a triangle illustrating the interdependent nature of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (Fig. 1). This triangle consists of four equal components: the social environment, transparency, local and global impact and future generations. The most important takeaway, Kogel said, was that sustainable development and environmental and social responsibility, while they do add to the cost of doing business, are no longer optional.

INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. Coal has in general a wide range of density from minus 1.3 to plus 2.0 g/cm3 because of its variations in purity, rank, and porosity, etc. The coal density has great impact on froth flotation performance, but much less attention has been paid to particle density than particle size. Our previous research results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different density fractions (minus 1.3, 1.3-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.8, 1.8-2.0, 2.2-2.2, and plus 2.2 g/cm3) of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm-inside-diameter column, and a 152-mm-inside-diameter column. It was found that nanobubble has the biggest impact on the flotation performance of 1.4-1.8 g/cm3 medium-density coal particles.

The purpose of this work is to determine the influence of sample length or size on the value of variance (Semi-variogram) to select the suitable length that is required to the geostatistical computations of ore evaluation. Three cases in Ghorabi Iron Ore were studied. The first one was on the iron fraction (Fe\) at which the semi-variogram gave an evidence to good continuity of the fraction in the ore. In this case, the length of sample has not important influence. The second case was for the Mn\ component of the same area where the semi-variogram has a nugget effect. The selected length for this case was 4 meters. The Cl fraction of the ore was the third case where the anisotropic phenomena was appeared and the suitable length is 3 meters.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

The past and present argillaceous rock studies for the U.S. National Waste Terminal Storage Program consist of: (1) evaluation of the geological characteristics of several wide- spread argillaceous formations in the United States; (2) laboratory studies of the physical and chemical properties of selected argillaceous rock samples; and (3) two full-scale in situ surface heater experiments that simulate the emplacement of heat-generating radioactive waste in argillaceous rock.
