A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

Fuller's earth and bentonite are two clay commodities that are interrelated either by mineral composition or use. Because of this interrelation and the sale of both for many different uses, some ambiguity in their classification has resulted. The term "fuller's earth" has no compositional or mineralogical meaning, and it is used more or less as a catchall for any clay or earthy material suitable for certain uses. Most, but not all, of these uses require absorbent properties. Bentonite by geologic definition must have formed from volcanic ash or tuff or the glassy material in volcanic rock; most bentonites consist chiefly of montmorillonite but other clay minerals may be present. In industrial usage the term "bentonite" is applied to any clay consisting chiefly of montmorillonite, irrespective of origin. Georgia and Florida have historically been the leading States in the production of fuller's earth; bentonite has been produced in Alabama on a small scale. The first major use of fuller's earth was in refining of oils. Other materials have replaced fuller's earth for this purpose to a major extent, but many new uses for fuller's earth have been found, and production has increased in recent years. The new uses include absorbent products, insecticide and pesticide carriers, drilling mud, and many others. The bentonite now produced in Alabama is of the "southern," "low selling," or "calcium" type and is used mainly as foundry-sand bond. Most of the fuller's earth mined now is in the Hawthorn Formation of Miocene age; a lesser amount is produced from the Twiggs Clay Member and other beds in the Barnwell Formation of Eocene age. Inactive pits from which fuller's-earth was produced from other formations occur at several localities. The bentonite now mined in Alabama is in beds of Cretaceous age; several years ago bentonite was produced from Eocene beds in this State.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

"The control of fugitive dust in high-latitude openpit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomena resulting in complicated flow regimes as well as atmospheric inversion due to the lack of adequate insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (one conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional openpit mine geometries were simulated for different seasonal conditions using a computational-fluid-dynamics package from Software Cradle. The airflow was solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model. The concept of particle tracking was used to predict the flow patterns of dust particles. For various climatic conditions and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size, from PM0.1 to PM10, and concentration were generated at various locations and dispersed by the airflows inside the openpit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit were reported at various time intervals. In the summer season, airborne dust particles were quickly transported outside the openpit domain. In the winter season, however, the development of atmospheric inversion significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the openpit domain. IntroductionThe computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) modeling of openpit mines is challenging. In a recent paper (2015), we presented different constraints and challenges in developing a three-dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. The simulation results of a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model by Shi et al. (2000) showed that both the mechanical and thermal forces are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an openpit mine. Alvarez et al. (2007) used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium-sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al. (2010) introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. (2014) used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual openpit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (1) air-advection (10 m/s, or 33 ft/ sec)-driven mechanical turbulence, (2) surface-heat-flux (240 W/m2, or 76 Btu/ ft2-h)-driven thermal buoyancy and (3) both air-advection- and surfaceheat- flux-driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence- induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (nonbuoyant case)."

The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. "Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). Mining operations that involve caving of the overlying strata are designed so that caving occurs in a controlled manner by progressive overburden failure. However, there are many cases where the overlying strata bridge over the caved area for longer periods than anticipated and desired. As the caved area expands with the advance of the mining panel, excessive amounts of energy accumulate in the roof strata which will be rapidly released when the overburden eventually fails.

In its largest product launch in company history, Cummins Engines welcomed more than 200 customers, vendors and media to witness the unveiling of its new QSK95 engine at its Seymour Engine Plant in Seymour, IN on Nov. 1. It took the efforts of 150 engineers to design the QSK95 and more than $100 million in investments to establish a new production line and test facility at Cummins? Seymour Engine plant. The result of these efforts is a new platform of engines that Cummins says will provide as much as 2,983 kW (4,000 hp) and will be the most powerful, high-speed diesel engine ever built.

"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

Mining corporations have spread their operations worldwide in the last few decades. The reason behind widening operations geographically can be seen as it being part of a risk diversification strategy. Given that the technical, financial and social risks are high, favorable deposits, taxation regimes and legislative frameworks create incentives for international mining operations. On the other hand, international mining activities add the risks of permitting, investing, operating and decommissioning to the corporations. These risks could emerge from defaulting, corruption, resource nationalism, social license to operate, and political and legislative uncertainties and instabilities.

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. The foundation is now approaching its third year and regularly posts updates, including semi-annual reports, to its website (www.http.alpha-foundation.org/), which serves as the main medium for communication with the broader stakeholder community"

The abstract discusses the use of numerical simulations to investigate roof fall in underground mines. It highlights the advantages of the discrete element method (DEM) in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes, while acknowledging its computational limitations for large-scale problems. The study presents a 3D numerical model coupling the finite difference method (FDM) and DEM to simulate laminated roof failure in a coal mine. The model represents the laminated roof with bonded particles and discontinuities, while the surrounding rock is represented by continuum zones. The research analyzes the fracturing of the laminated roof as the entry advances, demonstrating the coupled method's ability to reproduce laminated roof failure.

The recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust with acidified thiourea solutions was examined. The studied parameters were temperature, particle size, thiourea concentration, acid concentration, and the presence of oxidants. The study of the extraction of these two metals was undertaken in sulfuric acid medium. Silver dissolution was dependent on all examined parameters, whereas gallium extraction was only dependent on the initial acid concentration. The experimental results suggest a new very efficient method for recovery of both silver and gallium. Almost complete recovery of silver and gallium can be accomplished within 90 minutes. A technological scheme for recovery of both metals is also proposed.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

It appears that the tunneling trade is merging into its own renaissance for the decade of the 1970s', and most likely on past the year 2001. Federal interest in underground excavation, and more specifically, rapid excavation expertise has been on the upswing since the latter part of the 1960's, mainly due to the pressing national needs for more raw materials based on the rise for material goods and the projective gloom of possible power shortages. On the pure tunneling side the national needs encompass, in the mainstream of priorities, rapid transportation and water supply excavation as the two top contenders. For instance, the estimates for tunnel mileage for the period 1968-1975 are:(1) Subways---85 miles Urban Highways--- 123 miles Intercity Highways---210 miles Water Supply Routes---528 miles at a total of 946 miles of tunnels. The estimated cumulative underground excavation demand in dollar amounts for the period 1970-1989 are:(1) Construction Oriented Demand--- $35 billions Mining Oriented Demand---$34 billions (which includes the coal-oriented demand on the order of 26 billions.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish.
