This paper is a description of the digital Data Acquisition and control System that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley Concentrator. Pinto Valley Concentrator ? The Pinto Valley Concentrator (5, 41 is located approximately seven miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona. The Concentrator is situated south of the open pit mine and was designed to process 40,000 tons of ore per day with an average grade of .45% copper. The comminution process consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing, and single-stage closed-circuit grinding 161. Concentration of the copper sulfides is by means of froth flotation. Concentrates are transferred to the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company smelter in Miami, Arizona through a slurry pipeline.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

The process parameters for effective utilization of nitric acid as an oxidant for copper-iron sulfides have been developed. Leaching variables found to be important were acid concentration, temperature, time, atmosphere, pressure, mineral type, particle size, and percent solids. Particular attention was devoted to analysis and control of fumes evolved during the oxidation. Responses recorded were metal extraction, elemental sulfur formation and oxidation, product gas composition and evolution rate, reagent consumption, and residue flotation response. The paper concludes by laboratory testing a flow sheet based on the above observations. Ninety-eight percent of the copper contained in a chalcopyrite-bornite concentrate was recovered, requiring 1. 6 pounds of nitric acid to be regenerated externally per pound of copper extracted. Iron remained in the leach residue as hydrogen jarosite and was ultimately rejected from the system by froth flotation. Sixty percent of the sulfur contained, in the heading concentrate reported in the elemental form; the remainder was oxidized to sulfate and eliminated with the hydrogen jarosite in the flotation tails or by neutralization of the solvent extraction raffinate with lime. Nitrogen was evolved primarily as NO and NO2; up to 3 percent N2O was also present. Gases containing sulfur were absent except when pyrrhotite was solubilized in the absence of soluble copper. Seals are explosion-resistant structures built in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active workings. An equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) method such as the single-degree-of-freedom blast effects design spreadsheet (SBEDS) developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can be used to design seals to resist mine explosions. The critical input for the SDOF code is the seal resistance function. The objective for this study is to develop engineering data for design of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) seals using finite element (FE) models. The FE models can then be used to generate resistance functions for different PC and RC seal designs, which can be used in the SDOF codes. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers designed and built a test fixture for use in conjunction with NIOSH’s Mine Roof Simulator to apply a four-point bending load on the face of the tested seal. Eight large-scale experiments for each PC and RC seal were conducted. The experimental design considered the effects of the foundation strength, hitching and roof-to-floor convergence. Calibrated FE models for PC and RC seals were developed using ANSYS Ver. 13. With a very limited number of engineering-based assumptions and a single set of data—including Young’s modulus, compressive strength, stress-strain relationships, etc.—the PC and RC seal models successfully calculated the recorded resistance functions and failure patterns for a wide range of boundary conditions. Plug and RC seals were assumed for a 1.83-m- (6-ft-) high entry to demonstrate the application of the calibrated finite element models for calculating the resistance functions of these seals. The resistance function of a particular plug seal case was found to be a bilinear relationship. The resistance function of a particular RC seal without shear reinforcement was found to be a nonlinear relationship.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The chemical composition of the Pennsylvanian Bethany Falls Limestone Member of the Swope Formation was investigated using optical emission spectroscopy and both flame and flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy. Elements determined were Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, AI, Si, Na, K, P, Ti, Zn, Cd, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Cr, V, and Mo. Over 100 samples were collected from active quarries along a 320-km-long (200-mile) outcrop in northwestern Missouri. Intervals were sampled representing uniform lithology to determine vertical and lateral geochemical variation. The Bethany Falls Limestone is the most extensively quarried Pennsylvanian limestone in Missouri. In 1975, 42 active quarries produced almost 5.4 million tons (6 million st) of stone valued at over 15 million dollars.

The Broken Aro project is associated with a 1910 abandoned underground mine complex that has been discharging aeid mine drainage from entries, seeps and springs. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources(ODNR), R&F Coal Company (R&F) and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved with this unique project that will remine the abandoned underground complex and install a mine seal constructed of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. The goal of the project is to eliminate or reduce the acid mine drainage that is discharging into the watershed. This paper discusses remining, installation of the FGD mine seal, government financed reclamation projects and future application to active and abandoned mining sites.

Alluvial gold is abundant in the Quaternary deposits of the Kabul and Indus rivers in District Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Understanding the provenance of alluvial gold using morphology and elemental composition could be helpful in developing an exploration strategy of regional benefit. Detailed morphological studies of gold grains revealed high flatness index values which are indicative of a distal source. Compositional studies of 58 gold grains using SEM and EMPA showed broadly similar Ag ranges (1– 15 wt%) for each sample and occasional Cu values in individual gold particles to 0.4 wt%.Whilst the Ag profile is not diagnostic, the Cu values are compatible with derivation from either porphyry systems or ultrabasic rocks. The complex geology of the drainage catchments could host gold mineralization of other styles, but larger sample suites would be required to refine the current interpretation to establish whether particles which are simple Au-Ag alloys could be derived fromorogenic or epithermal sources. This scoping study has demonstrated that the compositional and morphological studies of gold grains are useful in providing information regarding the nature and location of the source of placer gold in areas where there is limited information on the nature and location of in situ mineralization.

Thin seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges are increased depending upon the presence of various external factors such as labor unions, Federal and state regulations, and market characteristics. This paper explores the turn-around situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Company (TMC), a medium-sized underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania, USA. Using a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations, and communications, coupled with an intensive upgrade/rebuild/replacement program for equipment and systems used at the mine, TMC has begun reversing its' cashflow position from negative to positive within two years.

Electrostatic separation is one of the most misunderstood physical processes used to beneficiate minerals. Nonetheless, millions of tons of titanium ores, iron ores and other minerals are processed every year economically, efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years major advances in electrostatic separation and its application have occurred. New processes include dewatering clay slurries, separating halite and sylvite, and shape separation of vermiculite and gangue minerals. Electrostatic separation techniques are based on one of two methods, electrophoresis or dieleccrophoresis -- processes involving charged and uncharged particles respectively. In some cases, the combination of these two techniques has proven quite useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the physical processes collectively called "electro- static separation" in order to enhance one's ability to define and consider new possibilities in mineral processing and other fields.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. The estimation of local recoveries is an important issue in a selective mining operation. Two techniques, probability kriging and multigaussian kriging, are applied to estimate local recoveries at Jerritt Canyon. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in light of the results. Both methods provide simple and satisfactory solutions to the problem of estimating local recoveries. Consequently, they can be useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

A patent issued to J.N.J. Leeman (1957) described the change in performance that takes place when a cyclone is installed in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position. Although this patent was directed more toward improvements that could be realized in the heavy medium cleaning of coal, it contained specific references to reducing the quantity of fine solids that would report in the underflow, and an example for fine sand classification is also included. The three cyclone installations for which data is given in this paper demonstrate that horizontal mounting of large cyclones can improve classification efficiency, eliminate some operational difficulties, and reduce cyclone maintenance requirements in closed circuit grinding installations. Cyclone Experience at Serrana S.A. Each of four grinding circuits at the Serrana S.A. de Mineracao Apatite flotation plant in Brazil have a 2.7 X 4.6 meter (9 X 15 foot) rod mill and each originally operated in closed circuit with two vertically mounted Model D20B (500m nominal diameter) Krebs Cyclones. New feed size is 25mm. The Apatite is liberated at a relatively coarse 35 to 28 mesh grind, but the 500mm cyclones had to be fed at 66 pct. solids in order to obtain an overflow analyzing 12 pct. coarser than 42 mesh. Because dilution water in the cyclone feed had to be limited, classification was inefficient, and there were other significant circuit difficulties as summarized in a recent article by C. A. Busnardo (1984):

On average, one to two fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM). Proximity detection systems offer an effective means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and automatically disabling machine motion. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to finalize a regulation that would require the use of proximity detection systems on all CMMs. Approximately one-fourth of all CMMs in use in the United States are already equipped with such a system. The use of these systems will save lives, not only by automatically preventing accidents but also by acting as a tool for educating miners and reinforcing safe work practices. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) have conducted a series of field evaluations to quantify the performance of these systems in an underground coal environment. These field evaluations measured the distance at which the warning and stop zones were activated. The technology provided consistent activation of the warning and stop zones under many of the conditions tested. However, some performance inconsistencies were observed which present opportunities to improve the reliability of proximity detection system technology. Some of the notable variables that caused significant changes in performance and should be considered in the design, implementation, and use of proximity detection systems include interaction with the trailing cable, performance changes during tramming, and orientation of the miner-worn component.

Lead anodes are used in commercial copper electrowinning operations, yet there is no method to calculate anode life. To be discussed in this paper are operating characteristics of rolled plate (Pb,Sn,Ca) alloy anodes at Morenci's electrowinning tankhouse along with fundamental operating conditions and how the anode reacts to these conditions. These include anode maintenance, electrolyte temperature and viscosity, cobalt concentration, and manganese concentration. Also to be discussed are anode substrate characteristics under normal operating conditions and how the corrosion rate is affected by changes in operating conditions.

The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. The study of ultrasonic-wave propagation in substances has been remarkably advanced in recent years in most engineering and science fields. The main object in studying the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in solids, is to determine dynamic properties of these materials. The present paper, however, presents some other possible applications of ultrasonic-wave propagation in the study of rock mechanics as follows: Investigation of the mechanism of microseismic activites of geologic materials, (a) at initial or low stress level, (b) at final or fracture stress level, and (c) under fatigue loading condition. Also, correlations among stress level, density, and the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in rocks are discussed in this paper.

Silver minerals are known to have slow leaching rates and low overall extraction and require a high concentration of cyanide and a long retention time to maximize leach extraction. Their response to cyanidation is considered mild to moderately refractory, largely due to complex mineralogical compositions. New research on improving the dissolution of silver minerals in cyanide was performed using high-purity minerals, as well as a high-grade ore sample from the Kupol property, owned 75% by Kinross Gold. The high-purity silver minerals studied in the leach investigations included acanthite, stephanite and pyrargyrite, which were also the predominant silver minerals in the Kupol ore sample. Dissolution of silver from acanthite produced only 37% extraction in 48 hours of leaching with 500 ppm NaCN. Analysis of the leached acanthite surface showed appreciable formation of polysulfide species, which can interfere with silver leaching. Adding lead nitrate into a pretreatment stage increased the acanthite silver extraction to 86.2%. No polysulfide species were formed with the addition of lead nitrate from the surface analysis. Cyanidation of stephanite and pyrargyrite produced very low dissolutions of silver, only 12.6% and 10.4%, respectively, in the absence of lead nitrate. Silver extraction from stephanite improved to 98% by adding lead nitrate directly to the leaching stage, whereas pyrargyrite required a pretreatment with lead nitrate to extract 83.2% Ag. With the addition of lead nitrate, the mineral surfaces had a PbO species and minor amounts of Pb(OH)2 and antimony was oxidized on the stephanite and pyrargyrite surfaces during leaching. There was a much greater concentration of Sb(V) on stephanite relative to pyrargyrite. Therefore, lead forms a redox couple on silver mineral grains and favors the oxidation of silver minerals. The high-grade Kupol sample assayed 22.6 g/t Au and 359.3 g/t Ag following treatment by gravity separation. Gold and silver extractions from the Kupol sample were 94.5% and 82.9%, respectively, using 500 ppm NaCN and 250 g/t lead nitrate. The findings to improve the extraction of silver from the ore sample with lead nitrate addition were congruent with those to improve the extraction of silver from the individual high purity minerals. Pretreatment did not, however, improve gold or silver extraction significantly with the ore sample.
