The research project reported on represents the first comprehensive attempt to measure the vibration levels of a variety of tools and equipment in the South African mining industry to determine the effect thereof on the health of workers and operators. Although human vibration has been studied extensively internationally only one reference pertaining to the South African mining industry could be found. From studies conducted in Canada and elsewhere it was evident that rock drills do have potentially hazardous levels of vibration. The scope of the research included measurements on a broad spectrum of tools, machines and vehicles used in the South African mining industry. Both hand-arm vibration, where the majority of the vibration enter the body through the hands, and whole body vibration, where the whole body is exposed to vibration through contact by the buttocks or feet, were investigated and measured. More than 700 sets of vibration data measured on 70 machines at 15 mines and workshops were obtained. Data were obtained for at least 24 different types of equipment and machines that were previously judged to have medium to high levels of vibration. All measurements were conducted in accordance with the international standards: ISO 5349, on hand-arm vibration, and ISO 2631-1, for whole body vibration. The equipment with the highest vibration levels in the hand-arm category was: rock drills, both pneumatic and hydraulic; pavement breakers and jackhammers; hand-held compactors; pneumatic wrenches and electrical hammer drills. Of these the rock drills had weighted vibration levels in excess of 20 m/s2. As far as whole body vibration was concerned the highest values were measured on earth-moving equipment. The major conclusion from this study is that the measured vibration levels are sufficiently high to create an enhanced level of risk of vibration-induced disorders in a significant proportion of the operators of hand-held equipment. The most notable examples are hand-held rock drills, pavement breakers, jackhammers and certain selected workshop tools. The results of the study indicate that a comprehensive epidemiological study should be undertaken on present and past workers to determine the prevalence of vibration-induced disorders.

The Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery is situated approximately 25 km north of Rosh Pinah, south-western Namibia. The supergene zinc oxide deposit at Skorpion is hosted in a volcano-sedimentary succession within the para-autochthonous Port Nolloth Zone of the Gariep Belt. Rock types hosting the ore deposit include altered and metamorphosed volcaniclastic and clastic sediments, limestone and rhyolite. At Skorpion, the metallurgical process is unique and the plant design requires minimal fluctuations within a selected feed grade. In addition, the presence of limestone inter-fingered with ore in some areas of the deposit results in dilution problems which may increase gangue acid consumption and therefore processing costs. Hence, selective mining is necessary to ensure the delivery of suitable ore to the processing plant, in order to keep the overall operating costs at a minimum. A complex control system is in place and is capable of a high degree of selectivity. The paper describes the grade control system in place at Skorpion Mine which ensures that the qualities of the blocks planned for mining and the material being mined meet the stringent process requirements of the refinery, i.e zinc grade, gangue acid consumption and deleterious elements that may impact on the efficiency and costs of the metallurgical process. This paper discusses a study that investigated different underground bulk air heat exchanger (>100 m3/s) design criteria. A literature review found that no single document exists covering all design criteria for different heat exchangers, and therefore the need was identified to generate a guideline with decision analyser steps to arrive at a technical specification. The study investigated the factors influencing heat exchanger designs (spray chambers, towers, and indirect-contact heat exchangers) and the technical requirements for each. The decision analysers can be used to generate optimized, user-friendly fit-for-purpose designs for bulk air heat exchangers (air cooler and heat rejection). The study was tested against a constructed air cooler and heat rejection unit at a copper mine1. It was concluded that the decision analysers were used successfully. This tool (decision analysers) can be used by engineers for the efficient and cost-effectively design of heat exchangers.

This paper deals with various factors affecting the strength of chromite briquettes which plays a vital role in the smelting of charge chrome / ferro chrome production. Appropriate briquetting parameters like molasses and lime binder level, molasses quality, particle size distribution and segment condition etc. are essential to guarantee quality briquettes in the successful use of briquette and chromite ore fines. In developing a technology for briquetting of chromite ores, it is important not only to study the grain size characteristics of the chrome ore fines but also to make an informed choice of the type and quality of the binder and the condition for producing a physically and chemically competent green and cured briquette. This paper also describes the effect of strength of briquettes on various parameters of charge chrome production as the use of quality briquettes in the production of high carbon ferrochrome alloys has a number of operational, metallurgical and economic advantages. It is also a requirement for submerged arc furnace operation that the charge be adequately porous to allow gaseous products of the reduction reaction to escape from the furnace charge burden without hindrance. Otherwise, furnace material would erupt causing electrodes and furnace other equipments damage and risking the safety of the work force. The briquette, because it replaces lumpy charge but has an advantage of smaller size, allows for an uniform and porous charge so that the ascending gaseous products can escape freely. Finally this paper deals with furnace operational results with varying proportion of briquettes having same strength.

Selective Blast Mining (SBM) makes use of milli-second sequential blasting technology to separate the valuable reef material from waste rock in the blasting operation at stope faces in the mining of tabular ore bodies such as exist in the gold and platinum mines in South Africa. The waste rock is cast blast to the back of the stoping area, and the reef material is fractured and deposited close to the stope face. Only the reef material is transported to the surface. A simplified economic model is presented to evaluate the economic benefits of SBM. Although premature, in that adequate experimental demonstration of the validity of the model has not yet been possible, the model is presented since it indicates substantial benefits in the case of narrow reef gold mines. It is suggested that many marginal mines should seriously consider SBM. Benefits can also be realised in platinum mines, but a lot more experimental work is necessary to establish cost parameters more reliably. Some practical experience in the use of SBM in the mining of the UG2 reef is presented.

A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators in particular to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement to operate this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ? 400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomisation. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to Hatch high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tapblocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area) coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the Hatch Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

The ability to respond tactically to changes in environment, like the unprecedented five-month strike in 2014 on the platinum belt following the 2012 Marikana incident, is a measure of the flexibility of the plan given the agreed strategy.This paper describes the Lonmin process of linking company strategy with long-term planning, tactical planning, and the execution of the plan through an annual planning cycle to maximize organizational flexibility. This flexibility enables mining companies to respond to the many internal and external forces that impact on both strategy formulation and delivery of results that meet shareholder expectations."

This paper presents computations of the electric field inside a furnace. We first look at the effect of contact between two coke particles from an electrical point of view. We give values for the amount of contact resistance in the total resistance of the system formed by the two coke particles. We show that the effect of contact resistance decreases rapidly with increasing contact area. We then look at the complete electric field inside a full scale furnace. The aim is to evaluate the amount of current that short-cuts the metal bath for different vertical positions of the electrodes. We show that electrodes high above the metal bath are undesirable since they offer a larger surface of conductive charge materials where current can flow through. On the other hand, deeper electrodes force the current to go the whole way down to the metal bath. Ohmic heating along this path ensures a high temperature of coke and slag that are beneficial for metal recovery.

An inter-disciplinary geotechnical study has been carried out in an Austrian magnesite mine. The paper describes the how geological data, in situ and laboratory tests as well as subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods have been used to identify critical areas in the mine. "A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. The role of the electric arc in the consumption of electrodes in submerged arc furnaces has long been debated. The hostile environment in the furnace does not make direct measurement feasible, so simulation has been used to evaluate the arcs contribution to the erosion. Magnetofluiddynamic (MFD) electric arc simulations and a cathode / anode sub-model developed in order to provide boundary condition to the arc model have been used for this purpose. The cathode / anode sub-model provides current distributions and cathode / anode fall voltages for the arc and temperature distribution for the electrode surface, which is paramount to the erosion rate which in turn is calculated from the Clausius Clapeyron equation and the Hertz Knudsen formula for the vapour transport. In the case of high-current industrial AC arcs, arc currents are typically ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 ? 60 MW. The results show that although enormous amounts of material is evaporated, much of it recondenses on the surface. Furthermore the results show that the arc erosion increases strongly with the arc current. If a single arc is present its contribution to erosion is close to the actual total erosion in the furnace. Results from this analysis indicate that there are possibly more than one arc present in the crater, in which case less than 40% of the total erosion would be due to the arc, the rest is chemical erosion.

The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30,000tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors; in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400m causing a major failure of the northwest wall involving close to 100Mt of waste material.

The chromium oxide in stainless steel slags usually exists as Cr2O3. However, there is a possibility that it is oxidized to hazardous CrO3 after disposal or during use. Therefore, some technical developments to reduce chromium oxide by using a smelting reduction technique have been reported recently. This paper describes the fundamentals of the technique which have been applied to ferrochromium production and reviews the recent results in literature.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering Diamond synthesis has attracted a great deal of interest because of its exceptional properties and various applications. In this study, the chemical catalytic vapour deposition (CCVD) method was used to synthesize diamond films using acetylene as carbon source and hydrogen as carrier gas at a temperature of 1000°C, and their thermodynamic stability was studied. Photographic analysis revealed that these products are diamond films, Ramman spectroscopy confirmed that they are graphitic while confocal laser scanning microscopic image analyses proved that these diamonds films have structural defects due to iron impurity from the catalyst precursor. The quantity of diamonds films produced is also proportional to the acetylene to hydrogen ratio but these films are larger in size at lower acetylene to hydrogen ratio. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that transformation of these materials begins at 25°C but could not be used to determine if a temperature range below 25°C exists. The stability of these CCVD-synthesized diamonds also increases below 25°C when stored at different temperatures.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

It has been observed that the productivity of ferromanganese furnaces, and the stability of metal and slag compositions, vary considerably according to the type of coke used as reductant. However, the desired properties of coke for optimum furnace performance are not well understood. In this investigation, the behaviour of four cokes, which exhibited a wide range of performance in ferromanganese production, was investigated by means of laboratory simulations of reducing conditions in the furnace. The Stationary Charge in Controlled Environment (SCICE) technique was used to simulate the conditions in the furnace shaft. Batches of raw materials, mixed in the same proportions as used in practice, were heated at fixed rates to 900, 1100 and 1300°C then cooled. The mass loss was used as a measure of the degree of reduction. Conditions in the lower part of the furnace were simulated by means of melt-reduction experiments in which lumps of coke were drilled out to form crucibles in which enriched ferromanganese slags were reduced at 1500 and 1550°C then cooled. An examination of the raw materials and the cooled, reacted charges using a variety of analytical and characterization techniques enabled the sequence of reaction and changes in morphology of the raw materials to be followed. This enabled an understanding of the behaviour of the cokes during reduction to be developed, which was then used to explain the observed performance of the cokes in practice. By relating the observed behaviour of the cokes in the laboratory tests to measurable properties of the unreacted cokes and to their observed performance in practice, it was shown that to achieve high productivity and good furnace performance, cokes should be selected to have moderately high reactivity towards CO2 (Boudouard reactivity) relative to conventional iron blast furnace cokes.

The process of atomisation is introduced and related to granulation. Some processes applicable to ferroalloys are discussed, along with their limitations and advantages. Examples of applications of atomisation to the processing of ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon and ferromanganese for use in the welding industry and as injectable additions to steel or cast iron are also presented. The economics of the process and the impact of process scale are discussed, along with criteria for process selection and system design.
