The Witbank/Middelburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a colloquium entitled 'Recent Mining and Metallurgical Developments in the Eastern Transvaal', at the Witbank Civic Centre on Wednesday, 25th September, 1985. An attendance of close on 300 delegates bore testimony to the popularity of the theme. Two well-attended cocktail parties were held at different venues on the evening prior to the Colloquium. These were hosted at the South African Coal Estates Recreation Club and Middelburg Country Club.

This paper presents a method that enables one to estimate the risk-adjusted discount rate. that should be used In project discounted cash-flow analysis. The risk-adjustment process is carried out via the capital asset pricing model of modern finance theory, in which the appropriate measure of risk is the beta coefficient of the project concerned. The resulting discount rate thus depends on the properties of the project Itself, and not on the nature or cost of the capital of the firm considering the investment.

The selectivity of ion-exchange sites varies with the matrix of the polymer, the nature of the site. and the method of application. The effect of these variables on the recovery of uranium is examined. with particular attention to vinyl pyridine and to symmetrical and asymmetrical quaternary ammonium sites. The effect, on the loading. of high concentrations of chlorides in the liquors is discussed. and other components of the liquors that may cause fouling of the resin are also considered. The discussion is supported by the results of tests conducted on various types of resins. The economics of the process is discussed briefly.

The initial results obtained from the implementation of computer-controlled strategy on the milling circuit are reported. An analysis of these results showed that a peak-power pebble-mill controller on a high throughput hardrock wet-milling circuit reduces the stability of the system. It was concluded that the milling circuit should be regarded as a single system in which the measurement of grinding efficiency, circulating load, product size distribution, and feed rate should minimize the product variance and maximize the feed rate according to the grinding power available. Work is proceeding on such a system.

Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,400. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Members shall be not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. This paper details a study conducted in Canada on the use of a drill with two different types of elastomer-covered handles in place of the standard steel handles. One type of handle was covered with a relatively stiff elastomer with a durometer of 70 (referred to as the plastic handle), and the other was covered with a more compliant elastomer with a durometer of 56 (refered to as the rubber handle). It was found that, compared with the steel handle, the overall acceleration at the interface between the plastic handle and the drill operator's hand was 2,5 times less, and that between the rubber handle and his hand was 3 times less. This reduction occurred predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, and was greater with increasing frequency. However, an analysis based on the methodology of an international standard (which places greater importance on low-frequency vibration), indicated that the reduction in vibration levels was minimal. ~he driller himself felt that operation with the plastic and rubber handles was more comfortable, the rubber handle being preferred.

Ancient mining in Southern Africa, with reference to a copper mine in the Harmony Block, north-eastern Transvaal T. M. EVERS. B.A. (Birm.) (Visitor) and R. P. VAN DEN BERG. B.Sc. (Wits.) (Visitor) A recently discovered mine on the farms Harmony 24 and 25 in the Letaba district has been investigated archaeologically by T. M. Evers and geologically by R. P. van den Berg. The archaeological investigations shed light on the mining techniques and accompanying metallurgical techniques, while the geological investigations give information on the structure and mineralization of the mine. Comparisons with other investigated ancient workings show that mining was well understood in Iron Age times, before the African peoples had any contact with Europeans.
