Scheduling the extraction and rates of production for an underground mining operation is a common task carried out during the life of a mine, from the initial feasibility study through to the final production phase. The scheduling process can be complex when several requirements have to be satisfied, for example, match mill capacity and maximize net present value while constrained by mining sequence and availability of resources. Many mines have computer programs relevant to their operation but because they are site-specific they need considerable reprogramming to be adapted to other operations. Other methods currently in use also suffer drawbacks: manual spreadsheets are laborious, computerized spreadsheets cannot handle sufficient constraints, and operations research techniques require a complex mathematical model to be set up. The use of network analysis techniques has been proposed previously but the unavailability, until recently, of easily used computer programs has not allowed this approach to be developed. There are now many programs which can be used; however, the particular program which has been adapted to mine scheduling is Metier's 'Artemis-PC' running on IBM-XT or compatible machine. The use of network analysis offers many advantages, including the use of a logical mining sequence; activities can be as detailed as required; related activities can be readily incorporated, and costs can be easily extracted. A heuristic approach is necessary to optimize the schedule, but the ease and speed of program execution enables this to be readily achieved, while leaving the mining engineer in full control. The paper discusses the problems encountered in mine scheduling and current solutions. It then details the use of network analysis techniques and the application of the Artemis-PC program to solve mine scheduling problems.

Results are presented on the elution of gold cyanide and base-metal cyanide complexes from strongand weakbase resins. It is shown that thiocyanate anions, zinc cyanide anions, and thiourea in acid solution are effective eluants of strong-base resins, but that it is generally necessary for electrowinning to be incorporated in the elution cycle if fast rates of elution are to be achieved. Weakbase resins are eluted with sodium hydroxide solution, which is shown to be far simpler and far more effective than the elution of strong-base resins. The effects of parameters such as concentration of the eluant, temperature, and electrowinning efficiency on the rate of elution of the resins are examined.

Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

As coal mining often results in the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD), careful planning and management of the water on such mines is required. A colliery in Mpumalanga recently sponsored independent research into the pollution-ameliorating potential of a natural wetland that has been receiving AMD for at least two decades. Samples of the sediment collected in the wetland were subjected to nine stages of sequential extraction in a determination of the distribution of the metal species present. The samples were then analysed for aluminium, iron, and manganese. The concentrations of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were also determined. The SRB concentration was found to increase with distance downstream (away from the source of pollution). An analysis of the sediment speciation data indicated that metal immobilization may be optimal in areas where the organic adsorption of metals is at its greatest. The analysis also provided evidence of the biogeochemical improvement of the water quality as the AMD passed through the wetland environment. The metal species present did not correlate strongly with the SRB populations; nor did the soluble species correlate with the species formed over long periods of time.

The block caving mining method is used to mine large orebodies in weak rock types. The layout for block caving requires that a considerable amount of development is carried out on the extraction drives and drawpoints at the bottom of the caving block. The development further weakens the rock mass, and stability problems arise in the extraction drives and extraction pillars. This paper describes the application of three-dimensional boundary element models in analysing alternative extraction level layouts for a block caving mine. The objectives were to establish whether the use of lateral pillars between drawpoints was warranted, and whether the lateral pillars should be offset or not. The stability of the rock mass within the pillars as well as the stability of the extraction drives were taken into account. The results showed that after undercutting, the horizontal and vertical stresses in the extraction level would be reduced. The lateral pillars would significantly improve the stability of the extraction pillars and extraction drives. There would be a minor improvement in stability if the lateral pillars were offset.

This paper describes a numerical procedure for the computation of the displacements and stresses induced by the mining of a tabular ore deposit in faulted ground. The numerical procedure is based on the displacement discontinuity method, which can be regarded as an application of Salamon's 'face element principle' to cases in which the reef plane is faulted into several sections, or even folded in an arbitrary way. An element of a fault is modelled in the same manner as an element of the reef, except that a fault element is allowed to undergo permanent inelastic deformation (i.e., slip) if the stresses transmitted through the fault-filling material satisfy a Mohr-Coulomb yield condition. An iterative technique for the incorporation of a Mohr-Coulomb yield condition in the general displacement discontinuity method is explained. This technique is illustrated by means of a simple example involving the mining of a flat-lying reef intersected by a fault. The displacements and stresses at selected locations along the fault are examined as the reef is mined, element by element. A consideration of the energy changes reveals that the occurrence of slip along a fault leads to a sudden increase in the energy release rate due to mining as the excavation intersects the fault. The energy release rate then falls off abruptly to a value less than that which would occur in the absence of any slip, and gradually builds up to re-establish the conditions that would exist in unfaulted ground.

Since 2005 Two Rivers Platinum Mine has set out on an initiative to actively monitor and control ground conditions on a daily basis, by making use of borehole cameras and pro-actively amending the support and mining strategies based on day-to-day observations of the hangingwall conditions. Today the borehole camera observations form part of the Rock Engineering Department?s daily function, and the size and frequency of falls of ground and ensuing accident rates have been drastically reduced since implementation of the system. The Two Rivers Platinum fall-of-ground management system aims to support 100% of the possible fallout thickness, based on ongoing data gathering and interpretation, thereby ensuring safety and limiting support cost.

The application of kriging in assessing the area rainfall in a weather modification experiment is complicated by the presence of many zero rainfall recordings on a given day, and the fact that the variograms seem to be quite different for the rainfall on different days. Indicator variograms are shown to be directly related to two sets of conditional probabilities. Abstract In the Kiirunavaara underground mine, crude ore is transported through ore passes from the production levels to the main haulage level. Failure and stability problems have occurred in some of these ore passes, with increasing frequency as mining depths increase. In this paper, selected results are presented from a research project run by LKAB. The presentation focuses specifically on stability analysis. Numerical models were used to identify failure mechanisms, in conjunction with empirical data and engineering judgment. The most important controlling factors governing failure and damage in ore passes were quantified. A causative model was established in which failure mechanisms and failure development were described. This model was used to formulate a prognosis of future ore pass stability, and for recommending remedial measures. Résumé Le transport du minerai entre les niveaux de production et le niveau principal de transport, à la mine de fer de Kiruna, se fait par des passes à minerai. Avec la profondeur d'extraction grandissante, les problèmes de stabilité au niveau de ces passes à minerai se sont multipliés. Les résultats d'un programme de recherche sur la stabilité des passes à minerai à la mine de fer de Kiruna sont présentés dans cet article. Les mécanismes de rupture ont été identifiés à l'aide de modèles numériques, de données de terrain et du jugement empirique des ingénieurs. Les facteurs principaux controllant l'instabilité des passes à minerai ont aussi été quantifiés. Un modèle a été établi dans lequel les mécanismes de rupture et le développement des dommages ont été décrits. Ce modèle a été utilisé à fins prédictives et remédiatives. Zusammenfassung In der Grube Kiirunavaara wird das gewonnene Erz über Sturzschächte von den Abbauebenen zu der Hauptförderebene gefördert. Mit zunehmender Tiefe des Abbaus sind vermehrt Standsicherheitsprobleme in den Sturzschächten aufgetreten, die teilweise zu Verbrüchen geführt haben. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer Forschungsarbeit des LKAB präsentiert. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen gelegt. Zur Ermittlung der Bruchmechanismen wurden numerische Modelle in Verbindung mit empirischen Daten angewendet. Die wichtigsten Einflußfaktoren für das Versagen der Sturzschächte wurden ermittelt. Es wurde ein Modell zur Beschreibung der Bruchmechanismen und des Versagensablaufs aufgestellt. Dieses Modell wurde verwendet, um die Standsicherheit zukünftiger Sturzschächte zu prognostizieren und um Sanierungsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten.

Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructure costs. CSIR: Miningtek recognized the potential of mini-disc cutters in a long or short wall application for selective hard rock mining in 1999. EEA was chartered to build a 780 mm diameter by 800 mm deep drum cutter head. While EEA designed and built the head, CSIR designed and built the drive mechanism and chassis for the trial machine. After assembly and shop testing at CSIR’s facility, the machine was shipped to a platinum mine for trials. This paper traces the development of mini-disc cutters and their application in South Africa.

"The behaviour of employees is an essential issue in the field of occupational health and safety. Safe behaviour is to a large extent determined by, apart from motivation and preventive actions, an employee’s attitude towards hazard. Thus, attention should be given to defining employees’ attitudes, and following that, to the possibility of correcting and shaping these attitudes in relation to hazard and obeying occupational health and safety regulations. The authors have focused on the analysis of employee attitudes to health and safety regulations in Polish coal mining companies, taking into consideration earlier research on the behaviour of selected employees. The paper presents the methods used to identify Z-type (passive) behaviour. Next, this behaviour is analysed to identify differences between a Z-type employee (enslaved) and other employees. To conclude, the paper presents a list of possible motivational tools that may be used to encourage occupational health and safety in Z-type employees. IntroductionThe technical state of equipment and conditions in the workplace greatly influence occupational safety. However, the deciding factor influencing the rate of accidents in the workplace is the frequency with which employees practise risky behaviour. Factors such as the social conditioning of conduct and motivation for organizing safe work conditions have been included in the notion of creating a positive culture of work safety. This notion has been approved as one of the main goals in management (Studenski, 1996).Safe behaviour is to a large extent, apart from motivation and preventive actions, determined by an employee’s attitude towards hazard. All actions undertaken in the field of occupational health and safety, including training, motivational systems, or imitation of behaviour resulting from a high culture of occupational safety in a given work environment, will not bring about the desire effects if workers have an inappropriate attitude towards occupational health and safety regulations."

Some of the parameters affecting the elution of gold from freshly loaded activated carbon using pure water as an eluant were studied. The procedure involved pretreatment of the gold-loaded activated carbon with a strong reagent of sodium cyanide and sodium hydroxide, followed by elution of the gold with water. Gold-loaded carbon obtained from three different sources was studied. It was shown that the elution temperature was the most critical parameter, and column operation at I !OCC (gauge pressure of 50 to 100 kPa) is suggested. The effects of variations in the concentration of sodium cyanide required for the pretreatment of loaded carbon and of variations in elution flowrate were also investigated. Both these parameters were found to have only a marginal effect on the efficiency of gold elution. The investigation also indicated that gold-elution rates were affected to a considerable degree by the particle size of the carbon concerned. Higher elution flowrates could be used when carbons of finer particle size were eluted. A modified eluate-collection procedure was also developed during the course of the investigation. Oven-drying of the loaded carbon was shown to have little or no effect on the efficiency of the subsequent gold elution. The calcium and silica contents of the various carbon samples were also determined. It was immediately evident that the calcium content was very considerable in the case of loaded carbons originating from carbon-in-pulp operations. Calcium concentration was particularly high where air agitation had been employed in the carbon-contacting circuit. To some degree, the calcium build-up explains the serious carbon fouling taking place, resulting in a decreased efficiency of gold adsorption. The fouling problem was found to be less severe when mechanical agitation was used. No poisoning by calcium carbonate was observed where the pregnant solution had been acidified before it was contacted with the carbon.

"A mineral resource constitutes the principal underlying asset of a mining company, and must be exploited and managed in such a way that maximum value is derived from it. Various asset management frameworks applicable to physical assets are available. This paper focuses on the extension of an asset management approach, particularly the Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) 55 asset management framework and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 55000 series of standards, to mineral assets. It is concluded that PAS 55 and the ISO 55000 series of standards can be extended to manage mineral assets, resulting in an integrated approach to sustainably optimize value from the company’s mineral assets. The benefits include improved returns on mineral assets, maximum mineral asset utilization, creation of an organizational culture focused on quality and continuous improvement, and assurance to stakeholders that the mineral assets are being efficiently managed over their entire life-cycle. In the context of this paper, a ‘mineral resource’ refers to both Resources and/or Reserves as classified by the SAMREC Code. IntroductionMining involves the extraction of valuable mineral resources from the Earth’s crust. A mineral resource is unique among natural resources in the sense that it is a wasting asset, which means that its value depreciates continuously with extraction. In addition, it is often impaired from time to time as commodity price changes (Macfarlane, 2011a). Since a mineral resource is a wasting asset there is a single opportunity available to optimize value from its extraction. Mine planning involves identifying a strategy to exploit the mineral resource in a way that maximizes value at an acceptable risk level throughout the life of mine (LOM). This optimum extraction strategy changes as economic conditions change, particularly commodity prices, as well as with improvements in orebody knowledge as mining progresses. It is the mineral deposit that competitively distinguishes two different mines and dictates the location of a mine; hence the adage ‘the orebody dictates’. Therefore, a mineral resource is the primary tangible asset possessed by mining companies and must be managed in such a manner that maximizes its value at an acceptable risk level (Macfarlane, 2011a)."

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

The work described here is an extension of current theory applied to obtaining the power dissipated at the wavefront of a transverse disturbance traveling along a mine hoisting cable. A previously derived empirical relation is adapted to the present problem, and is solved by use of a Lagrange-type reference frame moving with the wavefront. As a result of tie limitations inherent in the original relation, only a lower-bound for the domain of predicted power losses is defined. A qualitative assessment of conditions leading to the undesirable effects of internal frictional losses at the wavefronts are discussed in terms of the operating environment found on typical mining installations

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

This paper describes the development and implementation of amine-wide continuous stability monitoring system at the Declines Section, Anglo Platinum Union JV. The Declines Section at Union JV experienced a number of large panel collapses during 2005 and 2006. As well as posing a major safety risk, the panel collapses had a major effect on production since the Declines Section is a semi-mechanized operation. The collapses would often extend into the mechanized strike roadways, resulting in a loss of access to both current and future production faces. The collapses have been largely overcome owing to a change in support design and the implementation of a mine-wide stability monitoring programme. This paper describes the precursors to collapses, which were identified using continuous closure measurements and the remedial measures taken. It also outlines the design and introduction of a robust and reliable monitoring tool, which is now used on a mine-wide basis to provide early warning of large-scale collapses.
