This paper covers the commercial development of gravity separation of fine particles using a Lamella High Shear Rate REFLUX? Classifier (REFLUX? Classifier), focusing primarily on coal applications. The REFLUX? Classifier is a fluidized bed device that incorporates a system of closely spaced parallel inclined channels located above the fluidized bed. These channels make it possible to achieve a significant suppression of the effects of particle size, resulting in a highly effective separation on the basis of density. The improved gravity separation performance is shown to be remarkably high, with a significant reduction in the variation of separation density with particle size, and a significant reduction in the change in Ecart probable error (Ep) with size. The first full commercial-sized units of the REFLUX? Classifier were field-tested in late 2009 in coal applications. More recently, the technology has been applied in fine particle separation in minerals applications and there are a number of full-sized units operating in chrome applications in South Africa. Initially, pilot-scaled units (typically the RC?300) were trialled in iron ore, mineral sands, and manganese plants amongst other minerals, typically after other technologies failed to achieve the desired results. Currently a number of laboratories globally are carrying out more testing in minerals applications. More than 50 RC? units are now operating in coal and minerals applications. This paper introduces the REFLUX? Classifier technology, identifies commercial applications, and gives some commercial results.

Spontaneous combustion during coal mining operations is a major problem that affects the health and safety of workers and causes environmental problems. The phenomenon is associated with the presence of coal, coal shale, and pyrite. In 2020, a premature detonation incident occurred at an iron ore mine where the waste material contains black carbonaceous shale units known to be associated with pyrite. The spontaneous combustion propensity and properties of samples of the black carbonaceous shales from the mine were examined and compared with samples from the Witbank Coalfield. The spontaneous combustion liability indexes of these samples were correlated with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and proximate and ultimate analyses using linear regression. The Wits-Ehac Index classification results show that the samples were between medium and high risk. The linear regression analysis showed very poor correlations between the Wits-Ehac Index results and the XRF and proximate and ultimate results. The most valuable relationship found is between the presence of relatively high sulphur (greater than 3%) and ground reactivity with nitrate-bearing explosive emulsion.

Now a new generation of computerized drill rigs has been launched and they are based on modern standard PC-computer technology. The rigs have been well embraced by the market and more than 100 units have left the assembly line. The new generation has taken a quantum leap forward with respect to drilling accuracy, logging capabilities, reduction of manpower in some types and serviceability compared to the previous generation of drill rigs. The Can bus technology, well proven in the automobile products, is the backbone in the new generation control system of Atlas Copco. The short-term development is now focused on establishing this new automation platform on other product lines of Atlas Copco products. The long-term objectives is to offer the mining industry Atlas Copco products with one common automation platform. Essential for Atlas Copcois to contribute to the work with the on-going Data Exchange standard between mining machines and mining computer systems (IREDES). Our belief is that an accepted standard will make mine automation programs affordable for a wider base of the mining industry, because of the possibilities to a cost effective integration of different equipment with a minimum of system integration problems and machine specific interfaces.

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

It started operation underground at Rowland Shaft in early 2002. This paper covers the results of those trials that resulted in more than 1 100square metres of UG2 being mined.

SYNOPSIS As a result of a test programme over a period of approximately ten years and a decision to extend the uranium plant, it was decided to design and erect the first full-scale Purlex Plant in the Republic of South Africa. The plant at Buffelsfontein G.M. Co. Ltd. was commissioned in August, 1968, and to date has produced results superior to those predicted in the original estimates. The capital expenditure was R678 000 for a plant capable of treating 1 600 gallons per minute of pregnant solution. Compared with the conventional resin ion exchange process, it has been found that the saving in production costs is 21 cents per pound U3O8 produced. The amine loss is 10 parts per million, which is equivalent to a total organic loss of 250 parts per million. The uranium loss in the raffinate is less than 0.001 g/l U3O8. The final product is of a high quality and it is probable that it is pure enough to convert to the fluoride directly.

The modern mining industry is increasingly being tasked to comply with various legal, industry and social prerequisites. In addition to complying with these, the mining industry is further expected to effectively report on their compliance. Although there are many models that aid the mining industry in compliance and reporting, it is perhaps opportune for a new model to be introduced. The Compliance Spindle is postulated as a new and alternative model which is easy to understand and has the possibility of implementation in South Africa and other jurisdictions as well. The Compliance Spindle is also an effective tool to educate future compliance officers. The new model provides for all aspects of compliance and reporting and can be easily modified to take account of new developments in the mining compliance and reporting arena.

Altering the microstructure in order to improve the tensile properties of bow shackles resulted in inconsistency in the fatigue performance. This raises the question whether the inconsistency in fatigue life can be attributed to microstructural changes along the profile of the shackle or to decarburization at the surface. Bow shackles forged from 080M40 (EN8) material were subjected to different heat treatments in order to alter the microstructure. The shackles were subjected to five different fatigue load cases, which represented typical loads experienced at termination points for an overhead power line with a span length of 400 m, with changes in conductor type, configuration, wind, and ice loading. Although the change in microstructure does improve both the tensile and fatigue performance, we found that the depth of the decarburization layer has a greater effect on the high cycle fatigue life of bow shackles than the non-homogeneous microstructure.

The ?Poisson effect? is defined and characterized. It takes place even when the material to sample is not liberated. Gy, Pitard, Ingamells, and others, including the author, recommend that a minimum average number of particles of mineral of interest characterize the recommended sample size. How many? Recommended numbers range from 6 to 40 particles depending on authors, corresponding to standard deviations of 41% to 16%. Some guidelines are proposed, and the often alleged ?double-Poisson? effect is examined.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single-electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions?this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magnetohydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

By use of models based on the South African gold-mining industry, analyses are made of the effects of changes in the mining tax structure on the .State's tax income from potential new mines; also on the percentage of such mines likely. to be proceeded with. The percentage is affected by the correlation between changes in taxation and in the flotation pay limits !or new mines. It is shown that the State stands to gain both directly and indirectly from raising the level of the capital allowance and from its extension to all mines; and that the reduced taxation resulting from a lowering of the discriminatory high tax formula for the gold mines, would, in respect of potential new mines, be compensated for by a significant increase in the percentage of such mines that would be proceeded with.

This paper is concerned with heat flow in the plane of a typical cross-section of a deep underground airway. A new algorithm, called the quasi-steady method, is presented for the calculation of rock temperatures in that plane. The algorithm is used in the computation of heat and moisture transfer rates from the rock to the ventilating air for an airway that is wet on part of its circumference and dry elsewhere. The speed and accuracy of the new method are demonstrated on a microcomputer, and it is argued that this method offers a considerably more versatile and physically meaningful alternative to previous methods for the prediction of increases in air temperature along mine airways. The algorithm is also used to explore the concept of a uniformly wet airway that is equivalent to a partly wet airway in terms of its effect on the ventilating air. The concept is shown to be reasonable, but more complex than one might have anticipated. Finally, several useful extensions and applications of the new method are suggested.

When designing coal mine roof support, it is necessary to account for the uncertainties and variability that inherently exist within the rock mass and support elements. The performance of a support system is affected by these uncertainties, which are not taken into account in the current deterministic design methodologies used in South Africa. The key to the design of a roof support system is a better understanding of roof behaviour and uncertainties that can been countered during extraction. This paper sets out to develop a method that takes all uncertainties that exist within the rock mass and the mining process into account and provides a quantitative risk-based design methodology.

To date, Anglo Research has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in the AMIRA P9 (AMIRA International Limited), to develop comminution and flotation models for several Anglo Base Metals and, to a lesser degree, Anglo Platinum flotation plants. Plant optimization is thus achieved through steady-state sampling, model-fitting and simulation using the JK SimMet and JK SimFloat software packages. The surveys can vary depending on the needs of the plant/client. The survey can therefore include as little as a single piece of equipment, an entire milling/flotation circuit, or a complete circuit from primary comminution to final flotation concentrate (i.e. the ?integrated survey?). The presence of the AR team on-site usually precipitates in face-value observations that can lead to initial improvements. This stems from the knowledge-sharing on best practice that exists in parallel with the surveys. Numerous (reasonable) changes can then be simulated, thus indicating the optimization step most likely to result in the best efficiency improvements. The simulations can include changes in the flowsheet, ore characteristics, mill loads, grinding media size, change in grind, flotation residence time, air hold-up and several more. Plant surveys can result in process changes that provide the plant with either: higher plant tonnage, improved plant grind, additional flotation recovery and/or improved product grade. The additional benefit of performing an integrated plant survey is that the effects of an optimization change in the comminution circuit can be simulated using the flotation model. This paper describes a number of case studies where individual and integrated plant surveys were conducted by AR for Anglo Base Metals.

The 8th Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/ University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd August, 1990, under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The primary object of this meeting was to give research students at UCT and US the opportunity to present their work to a critical audience from industry, and to obtain feedback regarding the research needs of the minerals industry. Although the emphasis of these symposia is on work in progress at US and UCT, they also create an excellent opportunity for informal discussion between academics and metallurgists in industry. The first symposium in this series was held in 1982 at US, while the symposium in 1989 was replaced by the International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, also held in Gordon's Bay.

The Czechoslovak Scientific-Technical Institute has arranged the international conference 'Hornicka Ostrava' for four or five days at the end of October, 1969, as part of the preparation for the international 'Miners' Congress' on deep coalextraction in 1970. The keynote of the conference is 'New Techniques in coal mining,' and will be covered by five groups dealing mainly with: 1. Modernization of devices for increased safety and working conditions, new trends in explosives, new techniques for reducing environmental diseases. 4. In view of an urgent need for a simple means of simulating the behaviour of stratified rock masses, a long-dormant linear model is revived, generalized, and discussed in some depth. The model is piecewise homogeneous, consisting of a pile of homogeneous isotropic laminae in which the interfaces between beds are parallel and free of shear stresses and cohesion. The continuity of stresses and normal displacements is assured across the bedding planes and, to maintain simplicity, the theory of thin plates is used as the kernel of the model. The paper covers the case where the rock mass consists of discrete beds in which the layers are arranged either heterogeneously or systematically. The stratification is regarded as uniform when all the layers are of the same thickness and their Young's modulus changes exponentially with depth; and as homogeneous when all the laminae have identical thickness and properties. The case of uniform stratification is also treated on the basis of an equivalent quasi-continuum derived from the basic model. Attention is focused on the derivation of influence functions. It is demonstrated that the quasi-continuous models, when they are available, can replace their distinct-layer counterparts. The homogeneous quasi-continuum, which permits the derivation of its influence functions in closed form, facilitates the determination of the roof and floor convergence. In the case of a significant class of problems, the convergence distribution is defined by a second-order differential equation in the xy plane, which simplifies to a Poisson's equation if the mining excavations are unsupported. With this result, the paper prepares for the solution of a host of practical problems. These solutions are presented in a series of papers that are in the course of publication.

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%.
