There has been a persistent need to forecast roof falls so that miner’s exposure to hazardous underground environments can be minimized. Several monitoring techniques have been developed and are used today with varying levels of acceptance in the mining industry. This paper examines the potential for monitoring microseismic emissions activity as a means of forecasting roof falls. The use of this activity to forecast roof falls has drawn only limited attention, resulting in a lack of published field performance data. This deficiency is being partially addressed by analyzing data obtained during longwall mining at Moonee Colliery in 1998. The Moonee data base contains a wealth of information concerning roof fall forecast parameters and the seismic alarm criteria used to develop these forecasts. Four seismic alarm criteria were developed and used by Moonee with varying degrees of success. Roof falls were forecasted 73% of the time with average forecast times of 54 minutes. Ninety percent of the predicted roof falls had a warning time, i.e., the time between warning and roof fall event, of greater than 1 minute. The fraction of forecasted roof falls decayed logarithmically as a function of warning time, until only 20% of events were predicted more than 100 minutes prior to roof falls. False alarms occurred in 50% of the warnings. Many of the false alarms were quickly followed by a cessation in mining which could have temporarily halted the on-going failure process. If mining had continued immediately after the false alarms, a roof fall may have occurred soon after. The microseismic activity collected from Moonee Colliery demonstrates that techniques to forecast roof rock instabilities in underground mines are possible.

In response to a request from the President, the Department of the Interior joined with other agencies in a comprehensive study of the land and water resources of the New England-New York region. As part of this study, chemical engineers of the Bureau of Mines have visited 1,025 mineral-industries plants to inventory the waterborne wastes of mineral origin, discharged by the mineral industries of the New England-New York region. Four-hundred and sixty-two of these plants disposed their wastes to a public sewer of some type, but waste control remains a problem for moat of them. The 1,025 plants are discussed in main industry groups according to their production: Chemical and allied products. Stone, clay, and glass products. Iron and steel and their products (except machinery). Nonferrous metals and their products. Electrical machinery. Machinery (except electrical). Transportation equipment. Miscellaneous mineral industries.

This field guide is designed for use in planning pollution control and reclamation activities on small sand and gravel operations. Its purpose is to assist operators in selecting environmentally desirable pollution control and reclamation procedures based upon their particular mining situation. The guide includes information on interpreting physical and cultural factors that must be considered in planning and implementing a mining and reclamation program, achieving environmental protection objectives, and improving community/industry cooperation. Included as appendices are a summary of state laws and a list of additional readings on the subject.

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. As part of its mining health and safety research program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a longwall methane emission and mining time study at a mine operating in the Pittsburgh Coalbed to access the methane emission consequences of mining a longer face. The methane emission contributors from the mining of a longwall face are: 1) gas released from the coal broken by the shearer, 2) gas emitted from the coal on the face conveyor, 3) gas emitted from the coal transported on the belt, and 4) background gas emitted from the coal face and from the adjoining ribs. Based on the results of the study, a set of site-specific mathematical formulas and constants were developed to characterize each of the four longwall emission contributors. The mathematical formulas were then applied to longer longwall face mining scenarios to predict the methane emissions from these faces.

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the twenty-fourth semiannual survey made by the Bureau of Mines of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. The first report7 on this 1931 survey gave the results of the examination of the gasoline samples in accordance with the new Federal specification for United States Government Motor Gasoline.8 The present paper reports results of the examination of the gasolines for color, doctor test, gravity, end point, per cent recovered, copper-dish gum, and steam-oven gum. The retail price and the tax at the time each sample was taken are also reported.

The Bureau of Mines conducts several of these seminars each year in order to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.

The Chestnut Ridge Anticline is a prominent structure in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. This structure has brought two economically valuable limestone formations to the surface, where they are easily accessible to room-and-pillar mining. Nine active crushed stone quarries, an underground research facility, and one industrial facility currently operate along the linear trend that represents the axis of the anticline. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has identified significant variation in levels of horizontal stress within relatively short distances at shallow overburdens along the anticline. At one quarry, the horizontal stress is high enough to shear strata with a modulus of approximately 77 Gpa. Conversely, zones of extension were observed in parts of another quarry, indicating very low horizontal stress conditions. This study found that high levels of horizontal stress are to be expected in this very stiff rock formation and that local geologic and topographic structures are capable of altering the magnitude and possibly the orientation of the horizontal stress field.

"INTRODUCTION During peacetime, the United States uses less than 3,000 tons of chemical-grade celestite annually. The war need, however, was estimated to exceed 15,000 tons a year.Hitherto; most of the required chemical-grade ore has been imported from England, Mexico, and other foreign countries. If foreign sources do not find it possible to meet the demand for ore of chemical grade (plus 92 percent SrSO4), it is expected that requirements could be satisfied by concentrating low-grade domestic ores. Celestite deposits on Brown, Nolan, Fisher, and Coke Counties, Texas, are considered to be possible sources of supply for this low-grade material. The Bureau of Mines explored the most important deposits to determine the grade and amount of ore available and conducted ore-dressing tests to obtain a suitable method of concentration.The exploratory work, consisting of test pitting and sampling, was carried on under the direction of W. E. Dennis, one of the authors of this paper, from October 8, 1942, to January 30, 1943. The ore dressing-tests described herein were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Laboratory at Rolla Mo.In this report, a particular deposit is referred to by the name of the landowner on whose .property the .deposit lies. The location of the deposits investigated is shown on figures 1, 2, 3, and 4.The celestite deposits were previously studied by the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas, and the results of its investigation are published in Mineral Survey Circular No. 46."

Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.

Due to the difficulties of ventilating large opening stone mines, the effective dilution of diesel particulate matter and noxious gases has often been problematic. Since stone mines have large openings that develop low air resistances, and propeller fans are designed for low pressure-high volume applications, main mine propeller fans may be a feasible option for ventilating underground stone mines. This paper describes the results of a case study where researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have demonstrated that significant increases in total mine airflow can be achieved and the ventilation improved in a large-opening stone mine by replacing an axial-vane mine fan with two 12-ft diameter propeller fans and adding a line of stoppings. In this study, the use of the propeller fans more than doubled the air quantity from 300,000 cfm to 750,000 cfm, while operating at 50 horsepower less than the original axial-vane fan.

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines describing; gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the, United States. These papers are designed to dissemminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole; on the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and. study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the mining and primary crushing methods employed at the plant of the Ebsary Gypsum Co., Inc., Wheatland, Monroe County, N. Y. This company is capable of maintaining a maximum yearly production of 220,000 tons of crushed gypsum, thereby ranking as one of the largest gypsum operators of the State. The methods and practices employed typify the standard methods followed by gypsum producers in western Now York State, The bed of gypsum mined lies only 35 feet beneath the surface and is above average thickness for this vicinity.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

As a result of interest by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Bureau of Mines conducted studies on comminution of bituminous coal to the 2-um particle size range using the Bureau-developed turbomill. Both "plant grind" size (80 pct minus 75 um) and microsize (minus 10 um) coal can be produced in a single step with the Bureau's turbomill. In 15 min, minus 2.4-mm coal milled in water with steel shot was reduced tc 65 pct minus 75 m and 26 pct minus 2 m, with an energy requirement of 139 kW^h/mt coal. Plant-grind size coal milled in water, with Ottawa sand as the milling medium, was reduced to more than 45 pct minus 2 m in 15 min, at 175 kW?h/mt. Plant-grind coal milled with steel shot was reduced to 57 pct minus 2 um in 15 min, at 138 kW?h/mt. When diesel fuel was substituted for water, the milling of the coal was less effective and less energy efficient. Keeping the pulp dispersed was critical. Without an effective dispersant, the slurry became very viscous with increased milling time, resulting in higher energy requirements, low heat dissipation, and poor grinding efficiency.

Shafts into coalbeds usually produce the most methane, so the information in this chapter applies primarily to shafts at coal mines. Nevertheless, much of the information is relevant for noncoal mines that have methane in the mine or in the overlying strata. METHANE IN SHAFTS EXCAVATED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS (DRILL, BLAST, MUCK) [ ] Ventilation. Shafts excavated by conventional means are ventilated with a fan on the surface connected to ductwork that extends down into the shaft (Figure 9–1). Shafts into coalbeds should have ventilation systems designed to handle the higher gas flows to be expected as the shaft excavation passes through any over-lying gas-containing strata and nears the coal-bed to be mined. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

Minerals are vital to any industrialized civilization. Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceeds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

In connection with its renewed study seeking solutions to problems created by release of acid water from bituminous coal mines, the Bureau of Mines recently surveyed reports already written on the subject. This publication is based on that search. The Problem Poor distribution of water is evident on an ordinary geographic map of the United States. The more abundant supplies of surface water appear to be centered in the northeast, the southeast, and the central humid areas of the country. It is in the midst of this abundant surface water, in the Ohio River Valley, that most of the bituminous coal is mined. Varied industry has located in the valley to use the coal and the river. The coal is a source of power and o raw material. The river provides transportation for raw and finished materials; equally important, it provides the water that is used for cooling and processing in manufacturing. It also serves as a vehicle for the disposal of waste.
