"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

Burundi, a small central African republic located between Tanzania and Zaire, remained essentially a nation of small family farms in 1978-79 with approximately 95% of the population engaged in subsistance agriculture. Coffee and tea continued as the nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports, small tonnages of cassiterite, wolframite and bastnasite, accounted for an estimated 3% of total exports in 1978 and 2% in 1979, or $2 million2 in both years. Burundi's major mineral imports in 1978-79 were cement, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products. Abnormal weather conditions, a drop in world coffee prices in 1978, and the conflict in neighboring Tanzania and Uganda in late 1978 and early 1979 combined to re-strict economic growth in Burundi during 1978-79. The gross domestic product (GDP) posted a gain of 6.7% in real terms for 1978 and an estimated 2.5% for 1979 which was significantly less than the 13.7% recorded in 1977, a time of high world coffee prices. The manufacturing and construction sectors were hard hit in 1979 by the conflict between Burundi's eastern neighbors because of transport disruptions which made building materials and manufacturing inputs almost unobtainable.

The Anderson prospect is one of a number of properties investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the course of preliminary studies of the lead-zinc districts of northern Stevens County, Washington. examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. This examination was supplemented in late 1944 and the spring of 1945 by pre- The property was first liminary angle-dozer trenching and core-drilling. A second examination of the property was made by the junior author in November 1945. The data obtained in the course of these studies is presented in the following report.

To determine the copper and nickel content of reported ore occurrences in the Chippewa mine near Rockmont, Douglas County, Wis., the Bureau of Mines reopened and sampled the old shaft and workings during the summer and fall of 1953. Occurrences of native copper near Rockmont and others near Gordon, also in Douglas County, Wis., are in lava flows, which extend from the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan southwest across Wisconsin and into Minnesota. Sporadic attempts have been made to find additional economic copper deposits in these flows since profitable mines were developed in Upper Michigan nearly 100 years ago. The Rockmont and Gordon areas were explored extensively more than 50 years ago. More recently, from August 1944 to duly 1945, an occurrence near Gordon was investigated by the Bureau.2/

The Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Obstacle and Demolition Branch, Engineer Research and Development Laboratories, Department of the Army, undertook some extensive tests to determine the effectiveness and limitations of using standard demolition-type shaped charges in underground Mining. The tests proved the shaped charge has no practical application in the functions of mining covered by this report. At an approximate cost of 0 per foot hole plus spall produced by the most efficient single shots with the M3 shaped charge, the cost is over 20 times that of producing a better hole with a rock drill. The concussion would prohibit its use in many mines, and the excess carbon monoxide gas liberated by the pontolite explosive would be an additional hazard when used underground.

The Fairbanks mining district forms an arc 40 miles long and 8 miles wide on the north side of the Tanana Valley in central Alaska. This is a region of broad valleys and rounded hills that range in elevation from 600 to 2,600 feet Lode-gold production started in 1910 and has continued sporadically to the present, but the largest single mine produced only 40 tons per 24-hour day. Total recorded lode-gold production of the district is 241,000 fine troy ounces of gold from ore that averaged 1.32 fine ounces per ton. The ore was mined chiefly from narrow veins and veinlets alined along anticlinal folds at Ester Dome and the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. The only proven reserves are reported to be at the Ryan Lode at Ester Dome and at the Keystone Mines, Inc., holdings in the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. An inferred lode-gold resource for the district of approximately 4,000,000 ounces is considered to indicate only the order of magnitude of the lode-gold potential because of the absence of detailed data needed to evaluate the numerous deposits.

The Mohawk lead-zinc mining in San Bernardino County, Calif., was examined by D. W. Butnor, an engineer or the Bureau of Mines, at the request of Dunton, Ray, and Greenwood, leaseholders. Current operations were on a marginal economic basis, and government aid was sought in an endeavor to outline ore reserves so that production might be maintained.

The objective of this investigation was to make a preliminary evaluation of titanium-vanadium-zirconium, alloys using room-temperature tensile properties as criteria for selecting promising alloys for future critical studies. Arc-melted titanium-vanadium-zirconium alloys ranging in composition from 5 to 20 a/o (atomic-percent) vanadium and 5 to 30 a/o zirconium, were investigated to evaluate hardness, hot workability, and room-temperature tensile properties. Metallographic examination coupled with hardness measurements were used to follow structural changes and aging response. Room-temperature tensile properties were criteria for evaluating mechanical and engineering properties of the alloys.

The Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of the Natural Gas Association of America, has conducted a study of leakage losses from natural-gas transmission lines. This study has shorn that surveys to determine the leakage from transmission lines lead to line repair work that not only aids in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show financial returns of large magnitude.2 In order to conduct the study, it was necessary to develop accurate and reliable methods of determining the actual leakage from pipe lines. METHODS OF TESTING Three methods that were developed and used to determine the leakage losses from high-pressure natural-gas transmission lines are: (1) The "pressure-drop" method, (2) The "metering-in and metering-out" method. (3) The "metering-in" method.

This report describes the methods and equipment used by the Watauga Stone Co. to drill und blast limestone in a two-level quarry, and to crush, screen, blend, and load this stone. To minimize the equipment operator?s respirable dust exposure in enclosed cabs of mobile equipment by install-ing cab filtration and pressurization systems and by keep-ing doors and windows closed. Background Enclosed cabs are used on mobile equipment to protect operators from health and safety hazards. The primary health concern is overexposure to respirable dust. Examples of such equipment in mining include drills, dozers, haul trucks, and other equipment. When equipment is new, the operator?s dust exposure is normally at acceptable levels. As the equipment ages and gaskets and seals deteriorate, the air quality inside an enclosed cab can reach a point where it is no longer at acceptable levels for the equipment operators. In an effort to improve the air quality in enclosed cabs of older mining equipment, NIOSH has been performing research to retrofit cabs with new filtration and pressurization systems. Over the past few years, this research has shown that retrofit systems can substantially improve the cab?s air quality back to safe and acceptable levels. How-ever, this is only possible when a positive cab pressure is achieved and maintained. Thus, when a cab door or window is opened, the cab pressure drops to zero and the cab filtration and pressurization system is rendered ineffective. During a recent field study, the magnitude of this impact was noted when a drill operator repeatedly opened the cab door throughout the course of the drill cycle. Upon closer examination, it was determined that the cab door was being opened to manually guide the next drill steel into place each time an additional section of steel was needed to drill deeper holes.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the capability of mine roof supports so that the selection and design of these supportsare compatible with the conditions in which they are to be employed. This report describes a study that investigates three parameters influencing the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports: height, configuration, and horizontal displacement. Four crib heights, four parallelogram configurations, and three ratlos of horizontal-to-vertical displacements were tested on full-scale wood crib supports in a mine roof simulator. Test results indicated a reduction in load-carrying capability for increases in crib height. Increasing the contact area by changing the intersecting angle between crib blocks to form parallelogram configurations provided a slight increase in load-carrying capability for the first 10 to 12 in of vertical convergence, after which the cribs became more unstable, resulting in significantly less load-carrying capability. Horizontal displacements did not appreciably affect the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports for the range of vertical displacements (less than 10 in) likely to be encountered underground. This report documents these tests and postulates some explanations of failure mechanics for the observed behavior.

"The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.IntroductionA number of studies have been performed since the early 1950s on the behavior of dust in mine air (Bradshaw and Godbert, 1954; Dawes and Slack, 1954; Bradshaw et al., 1954; Hall, 1955-56; Reinhardt, 1971; Ford, 1971; Courtney et al., 1982). While the experimental data available from these studies are indeed useful in understanding dust cloud behavior in a specific situation, no generalized conclusions can be drawn because of the lack of data on parameters such as flow velocity, size distribution of the source dust, and particle density. These change from mine to mine or even within the same mine. The present study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground' mine airways (National Academy of Sciences, 1980). The characteristics studied encompassed airborne concentrations and floor depositions over the entire size range as well as the respirable size range. The experimental results in this paper are intended to complement a mathematical model developed to predict ambient concentration and deposition of airborne dust in mine airways (Bhaskar and Ramani, 1986)."

Flotation tests were conducted on two samples of copper-nickel-bearing ore from the Harriman area near Rockport, Maine. The samples were taken by Roland F. Beers, Inc., for tests in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. One sample, analyzing 0.38 percent copper and 0.71 percent nickel, was essentially a disseminated pyrrhotite in hypersthene. Pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and millerite were intimately associated with the pyrrhotite. Locked series flotation tests on this sample showed that 87.4 and 73.4 percent of the copper and nickel, respectively, could be recovered in a bulk concentrate that analyzed 3.47 percent copper and 5.34 percent nickel. The copper-and nickel-bearing minerals were collected with sulfhydric collectors in an alkaline circuit. Cleaning the concentrate three times with the addition of pH regulators was sufficient to attain the previously stated grades. The second sample had analyses of 0.31 percent copper and 0.85 percent nickel; talc and hypersthene were the main gangue minerals. Bulk sulfide flotation, made while depressing the talc, resulted in a concentrate that analyzed 2.33 percent copper and 4.70 percent nickel at recoveries of 70.0 and 54.4 percent, respectively. Flotation of the talc followed by bulk sulfide flotation resulted in a nickel content greater than 5 percent. A locked-series test showed that 60.7 percent of the copper and 73.7 percent of the nickel could be recovered at grades of 1.29 and 4.85 percent, respectively.

In a preliminary study of the beneficiation of iron ores conducted by the Bureau of Mines, one of the authors (T. T. Read) found it necessary to ascertain, if possible, how much effect a decrease in the silica content of an iron ore has upon the cost of making pig iron from the ore. In the beneficiation of iron ores the most important impurity to be removed is usually silica, and the amount that can be expended on a beneficiation process to reduce the silica content of the ore is obviously determined by the amount of increase in the value of the ore after beneficiation. The price that can actually be obtained for a beneficiated ore is, of course, a matter of negotiation between the seller and the buyer, but since the relative value of different grades of iron ore must be chiefly based upon the cost of making pig iron from them, an approximation as to the effect which decrease in the silica content of ore has upon the cost of snaking pig iron is an important guide in estimating what probable average gain will result from subjecting an ore to a beneficiation process. A search of the literature failed to reveal any detailed statement on this important topic, but fortunately the data are at hand to permit making an approximate calculation of the probable effect. Develop and evaluate a mechanical position and heading system (MPHS) that provides information about underground mining machine position and heading to aid in the remote positioning of mining machines during face maneuvers. Background While great improvements have been made in mineworker safety, progressive technology continues to create a safer, better working environment for miners by keeping them away from the dangerous face area. In maintaining such high standards of safety, the Bureau is investigating remote, computer-assisted operation of mining systems for underground, highwall, and surface mining applications. A key component of computer-assisted operation is a guidance system. Since there are no guidance systems on any commercial continuous mining machines, the Bureau itself developed and tested the mechanical position and heading system (MPHS). The MPHS is based on linear position transducers (LPT's), and operates on principles of triangulation to provide machine position (xy coordinate), and orientation in the xy plane (yaw or heading). These data are needed in order to keep the continuous mining machine in proper alignment before and during the cutting cycle. The MPHS theory development is in three parts: characterize the sensors used and their configuration; select and define the navigation reference frames; and derive a closed-form solution for determining the position and beading from sensor information. Application of the MPHS theory required the development of hardware, software, and system interfaces.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least.
