Various chemicals, including compounds of copper and lead, were added to a mixture of No. 2 and No. 6 fuel oils that was fired in an experimental furnace. Tests were made to determine (1) the effectiveness of these chemicals in removing soot deposits on probes devised to simulate heat-transfer surfaces in boilers and (2) the effectiveness of the chemicals in preventing the deposition of soot on the probe surface. Test conditions were regulated so that the temperature of the products of combustion adjacent to the probes was in the range of 625° to 700° F. The clean-metal temperatures of the air-cooled probes were comparable with the water-tube temperatures in boilers operated at 40 to 100 p.s,i.g. The dosages of the fuel oil additives used in these tests were generally larger than those usually recommended for most proprietary compounds.

Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. Technology Transfer Industry introduction to the MERITS program will occur throughout 2002. MERITS presentations at the Joseph A. Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

Exploration of the Antimony Peak district by the Bureau of Mines was conducted under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. Antimony was one of the seven metals designated at that time as strategic by the Secretaries of War, Navy, and Interior upon advice of the Army and Navy Munitions Board. As a result of many field examinations, the Antimony Peak property was chosen as one of the most attractive for the possible development of emergency antimony reserves. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines began in November 1940 and was concluded in May 1941.

A comparative study has been made by the Bureau of Mines of several analytical methods for determining carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides in toxic gases produced by the detonation of explosives. Laboratory and field methods and detector-tube devices are described. Analytical results are compared, and reliability of the various methods is discussed. INTRODUCTION In all underground mining there is ever-present danger to persons from possible overexposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides created by explosives or blasting agents. These health hazards, recognized for many years, led to the early establishment by the Bureau of Mines of specific requirements regarding fumes generated by explosives authorized for use in underground coal mines in the United States.3

Resumes Sales of Titanium Sponge. - Against a background of increased U.S. titanium sponge supplies, the Soviet Union is offering limited quantities of this commodity to the U.S. market at approximately $10.00 per pound, down from $25.00 per pound last year.

Two methods were devised and evaluated for quantitatively measuring the amount of oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation waters. One method involved use of an organic solvent to remove carbon-l4-tagged oleic acid from mineral surfaces and flotation water phases with subsequent radio-metric analysis of the extracts. Studies showed this method to be slow and subject to large variations in accuracy and reproducibility. In the second procedure, tagged oleic acid was measured directly on the surfaces of dried mineral products. Oleic acid in the water phase was determined by adsorbing it on fine mineral, drying, and radiometric counting. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from bench-scale flotation tests with synthetic mixtures of ore minerals and quartz and with natural ores showed this method to be fast, accurate, and reproducible.

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.

"The prevailing practice of washing unsized coal, 1/2-inch and finer, to 1/8-inch and finer, on a table is subject to certain limitations which are commonly overlooked. In some instances good results are obtained by this method, but often the opposite is true and the efficiency of the washing operation is low. Although the separation taking place on a concentrating table is not fully understood, the actual distribution of particles of various sizes and specific gravities was determined a number of years ago by ore-dressing investigators. Hence this paper consists of an analysis of an old problem by new methods. The experimental data on which the discussion is based were obtained in the course of coal-washing investigations conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Northwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Washington and with certain coal operator: of that State.Experimental WorkThe general method of study has been to take a large number of zonal products from the table, and separate them according to specific gravity and size into their component parts. The table used is one of the standard commercial sizes with a diagonal deck. The coal to be washed is split into representative portions, which are stored in separate bins. One portion is used for ""timing as"" the table; the products are collected continuously in the same turned to the feed bin, and thus a closed circuit is completed. When the despite conditions on the table are obtained, coal is fed from one of the re. After the table is operating smoothly the entire product is minute; such a sample is sufficiently large to represent accurately the work of the table and at the same time to minimize the effect of beginning at the end next to the head motion, separate samples are made for each foot along the edge of the deck."

Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has nude necessary a general survey of coking-coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begun in 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one of a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Letcher County, Icy. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced, and, (c) which coals cannot be upgraded by known commercial preparation methods to metallurgical fuel standards now accepted.

One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications system which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. At present, it appears that an electromagnetic system may be most practical. The development and design of an effective electromagnetic communications link for signalling between mine workings and the surface requires knowledge of pertinent physical properties of the rocks overlying the mine workings and the characteristics of the ambient noise against which a communications signal must be recognized. Knowledge of the overburden electrical transmission properties is useful not only for determining a practical operating transmitter frequency at a given mine, but also for ensuring the best possible electromagnetic coupling for routine or emergency communication purposes. Field studies of the electrical transmission properties of the overburden of coal mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania generally show that a rela- tively uniform and unimodal electrical conductivity distribution exists provided that the region has not been subject to considerable structural or metamorphic deformation such as that observed in the Gary District of West Virginia. Measurements of ambient surface electromagnetic noise levels at several mines in Colorado, Illinois, and West Virginia were taken and analyzed and are presented in the form of amplitude histogram plots both as a function of frequency and time of day. These amplitude histograms may be used in conjunction with overburden resistivity data in implementing an uplink communications beacon system which will yield a specified signal-to-noise ratio at the surface. Numerous C.W. field transmission tests were made in various coal mining environments with use made of either a buried vertical-axis transmitting loop or a short insulated grounded current line. These transmission tests were made from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in frequency and at several geographic surface receiving sites. The results of these field measurements show, in general, good agreement with theoretically calculated results. Since the produced surface magnetic field from a buried vertical-axis loop source or the produced surface horizontal electric field from a buried horizontal current line show better agreement with theoretical results, they could be used for beacon location system. One criterion would be in detecting the equatorial and polar null lines of the horizontal electric field component which is normal to the direction of emplacement of a buried transmitting line current source. A second criterion would be in the surface mapping of the maximum in the vertical magnetic field directly over a vertical-axis loop transmitter and the associated null in the vertical magnetic field at a horizontal offset distance which is about 1.4 times the depth of burial of the transmitter. Finally, a third criterion would lie in the surface mapping of the null in the horizontal magnetic field directly over the vertical-axis beacon and the associated maximum in the horizontal magnetic field at an offset distance from the transmitter axis of half the depth of burial of the loop transmitter. In mapping the vertical magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, the size effect of the transmitter loop must be taken into account when the separation distances between the transmitter and receiving sensor are less than ten times the effective radius of the source loop; increasing the size of the transmitting source relative to the source-receiver separation distance shifts the null in the vertical magnetic field to greater offsets. In mapping either the vertical or horizontal magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, care should be exercised in ascertaining that measured nulls and maxima are along radials through the axis of the buried source loop. For the main part, coupling experiments show that ambient electromagnetic noise in coal mining districts is less of a problem above 1000 Hertz. But secondary and perhaps undesirable maxima and null phenomena (as well as penetration problems) would occur in many coal mine provinces in the behavior of the surface horizontal magnetic field (over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter) if transmission frequencies as high as 10 kHertz were used.

Relative enthalpies of CuBr from 298.15 to 1,301 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data needed for the advancement of mineral technology. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the standard enthalpies of transition[ (IlH~r) by drop calorimetry. The combined results gave reversible transitions at 657 K with llH~r= 1.10 kcal/mol, at 741 K with lm~r == 0.51 kcal/mol, and at 759 K with an enthalpy of fusion (AH~) of 1.22 kcal/moL ] An anomalous increase in heat capacity preceded the first crystal transition at 657 K. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function from 298.15 to 1,500 K. Standard relative enthalpies are also given in equation form and combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured for six rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Results for both dry and moist specimens are presented and compared with data reported by others. Loss factors calculated from the data presented are important to the Bureau's study of rock fragmentation by means of dielectric heating.

Water-based epoxy sealants were examined during a 2-year period to deter-mine their effectiveness as barriers to radon release in uranium mines. Radon emanation rates from uranium ore samples were monitored for extended periods in the laboratory before and after sealant application. Reduction of radon flux due to the coating of laboratory samples was approximately 80 percent. Test chambers in a dormant uranium mine were monitored to determine both short and long-term barrier effectiveness. These field studies of the seal-ants indicated radon flux reductions exceeding 50 percent relatively soon after application and nearly 75 percent about 1 year later. An unexpected complication to early monitoring in the form of a large radon emanation increase, believed due to added moisture, is discussed.

Subsidence to surface occurs in a large proportion of underground mines. Preliminary to any indication of subsidence on the surface, there is usually a breaking up and sloughing of the cover into the mine opening which, in a period of time ranging from minutes to many years, progresses to the surface, This process is referred to as subsurface subsidence. In many mining operations, information regarding the process of subsurface subsidence is important, For example, if there are buildings or other improvements on the surface, or if the direction of the subsurface subsidence might threaten other underground workings--such as shafts--or if the subsidence might be progressing in a direction which would fall outside the anticipated subsidence limits, the problem could assume special significance.

Oil yields, lithology, and stratigraphy have been evaluated for 15 cored wells and two sampled wells representing 10 square miles of the Tipton Member of the Green River Formation near Green River, Wyo. The area evaluated is being used by the Bureau of Mines for experimental production of oil from the oil shales in place. Lithology and oil yields were correlated to produce a stratigraphy diagram for the in situ study area, permitting precise designation of comparable sections. Because of lateral uniformity of oil shale, oil yields from eight cores and two sets of drill-cutting samples within a quarter section show the range of variation in average oil yield arising from experimental error. Variation in average oil yields from the seven cores representing the 10-square-mile study area lies within the expected experimental error. No difference in oil-shale richness across the study area is indicated. Average oil yields for three Tipton sections in the study area were deter-mined as follows: (1) The entire Tipton Member oil shale (about 145 feet thick), 13.3 gallons per ton; (2) the 40-foot upper rich zone, 21.0 gallons per ton; and (3) the 21-foot zone in which the Laramie Energy Research Center is conducting in situ experiments, 22.4 gallons per ton. One acre of the 21-foot experimental section represents 34,300 barrels of oil in place, and 1 acre of the Tipton's 40-foot rich upper layer represents 62,000 barrels.

The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between reactor-grade yttrium and lithium fluoride in lithium fluoride-yttrium fluoride mixtures was measured using a quartz spring balance. At 950° C the magnitude of the rate of reaction is 10-5 grams of yttrium/cm2-sec. The heat of activation for the reaction is 38.3 kilocalories per mole of LiF. A surface-controlled mechanism is proposed in which LiF is adsorbed on the yttrium metal surface. An activated complex is formed when additional LiF reacts with the adsorbed LiF-metal site. The activated complex then decomposes to the products) which are lithium metal and YF3. The importance of the reaction in the electrowinning of yttrium metal from fluoride electrolytes is discussed.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory testing of copper-bearing magnetite ore from the Poorman, Bush & Brown, and Copper Center deposits, Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. The ores contain minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Intimate association of these sulfides with magnetite necessitates fine grinding for adequate liberation and rejection of copper and sulfur and for the production of high-grade iron concentrate low in objectionable impurities. Laboratory tests indicated that the optimum results can be obtained by flotation of ore ground to minus-100-mesh, with subsequent wet magnetic separation treatment of the flotation tailing. A summary of results obtained by this treatment of the three samples tested is shown in table 1.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.
