Council of the Holmes Safety Association, which operates in the Uniontown-Brownsville bituminous coal district of western Pennsylvania will be of interest to all who are striving to increase safety in mines, quarries, and in the oil fields. The utilization of secondary titanium was determined in a study by the Bureau of Mines, and a 10-year statistical table showing supply and distribution patterns is presented in this report. Over the total 10-year period, estimated scrap consumption is larger than estimated scrap supply. Trends from the estimated data indicate that titanium is in short supply and probably will continue to be in the future. Because of higher processing costs for recycle scrap, scrap will tend to migrate to the steel and aluminum industries and to ferrotitanium production and exports. Nonrecoverable losses of titanium metal during processing was determined to be a potential area for research.

One phase of Bureau of Mines' work in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective. devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus, gas masks, supplied-air respirators. (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators, and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical cartridge respirators). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Branch; approval tests of other types of respiratory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Branch. Both branches are in the Health and Safety Division.

Following World War II, the rapid increase in both military and civilian activity in the area served by the Alaska Railroad stimulated interest in the availability of local sources of nonmetallic minerals that might be used for building materials. Except for abundant sand and gravel and some pumice, the construction industry of the area depended entirely on high-cost imports for building materials of mineral origin. Because continued rapid growth was anticipated, development and use of local sources of such materials was advocated by both military and civil authorities to reduce the high costs of con¬struction and bolster the unstable economy of the area. The U.S. Department of the Interior began a program On included examining the numerous deposits of nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad to determine their possible use as raw materials for the construction industry. Preliminary field investigations were made by the Geological Survey. The more promising deposits were subsequently examined and sampled by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the samples were subjected to the laboratory tests necessary to indicate the chemical and physical characteristics of the raw materials or their products. Such field and laboratory investigations were conducted on clay, shale, argillite, limestone, gypsum, and pumice taken from various parts of the area. In initial phasees of the work, done irate 1948 through 1952, many of the deposits examined were suitable for proctoring building materials. Results of the work completed during that period have been published in a Bureau of Mines report3 giving general information and detailed data on more than 35 deposits that were investigated.

This paper sets forth the mode of ore occurrence, characteristics of ore and country rocks, methods of exploration, development, and. ore extraction, and the costs of underground operation at No. 8 mine of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. located near the southern extremity of the Southeast Missouri lead district. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. T. Campbell, geologist, in the preparation of the paragraphs on the geology of the ores. HISTORY The first record of mining in St. Francois County, Mo., concerns more or less shallow semisurface "diggings" which were worked about the year 174-2. In 1864, however, the discovery of the disseminated deposits, the present source of lead, was made on property near the town of Bone Terre. Winslow has estimated the lead-ore production in this county prior to 1869 to be 59,526 tons.3

As a part of the strategic minerals program of the Bureau of Mines, nine chromite-ore samples were obtained during the period 1949-56 from mines in the vicinity of Red Mountain, near Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. This report summarizes the results of beneficiation studies of the samples at the Bureau's Juneau, Alaska, and Albany, Oreg., laboratories. In general, the ores were found amenable to concentration by gravity methods for producing concentrates that assayed over 48 percent chromic oxide. Intimate association of chromite and gangue minerals, however, necessitated fine grinding and limited the amount of chromite recoverable. Recovery of chromium in concentrate that assayed 48 percent chromic oxide or higher ranged from approximately 20 percent for low-grade ores (10 to 12 percent Cr203) to more than 95 percent for 1 high-grade sample (42 percent Cr203). The iron content of the chrome-bearing mineral -hence, the chrome/iron ratio of finished concentrate -appears to vary with the grade of the ore. Concentrates made from high-grade ores had chrome/iron ratios as high as 3.1:1; the concentrates from low-grade ores, however, had chrome/iron ratios as low as 1.8:1.

"Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

This circular is one of a series of papers on coal mining methods and costs which being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines for the purpose of making available to those interested in the industry a knowledge of the mining methods employed, the places here mechanical and hand loading are practiced, and coat data on the several operations pertaining to the removal of coal from the working faces and its transportation to the tipple for loading into railroad cars. Mining costs are governed by the relative efficiency of the mining method employed. The method is selected for Its adaptability to the local natural physical conditions such as the nature and thickness of the coal bed, its dip, the character of the coal, and the thickness of the overlying strata.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. Exposure to airborne respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to silicosis, a debilitating lung disease. On surface coal mining and construction sites, blast hole drills are notorious sources of airborne respirable dust that may contain significant amounts of silica. The drill operator and drill helper usually receive the greatest silica exposure compared with other occupations. As a result, many drilling operations have been, and still are, on more stringent dust standards. Drilling through various rock formations naturally presents a strong potential for silica dust generation for several reasons. First, drilling is a pulverizing process that generates large amounts of very small dust particles. Second, the bailing air used to flush cuttings from the hole leaves the hole at a very high velocity and can be difficult to contain. Third, many fixed shrouds used to enclose the area beneath the drill deck have a significant amount of leakage due to 1) gaps between the shroud and ground created by raising/leveling the drill, 2) gaps in the corner seams, and 3) tom deck shrouds. CONTROLS A dry dust collection system is typically connected to the drill deck to collect dust as the bailing airflow transports the cuttings (and significant amounts of airborne respirable dust) out of the drill hole. Deck shrouds are installed in an attempt to enclose the volume around the drill steel and prevent dust escaping. However, most deck shrouds are rectangular and constructed of four separate pieces of rubber belting attached to the deck. Because of this design, there is usually a significant amount of dust escaping from the open seams as well as the open area between the shroud and the ground. This dust can be a significant source of silica exposure to drill operators as well as other personnel downwind of the drill.

Bureau of Mines engineers engaged in studying stimulative methods of recovering oil have been making a series of tests on the effectiveness' of methods that may be applied in water flooding oil-bearing sandstones. The report gives the test procedures and results of a study of the rates and pressures used for injecting water into several sandstone formations in the Mid-Continent fields for the purpose of learning more about the mechanics and efficiency of the flooding process and to provide useful information for operators of water floods in this area.

This interpretation of the laws of Bolivia has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

This report describes results of laboratory-scale experimental treatment of nine ores containing gold and silver, including samples of products of previous plant treatment, from ore deposits in California and Nevada. The samples treated were taken by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during investigations of these ore deposits. The information reported is of interest for development of the mining districts represented or in future Investigations of similar ores from other sources. The treatment methods were as simple as possible. More complicated treatments were tried when required, The applicability of the methods and their limitations in treating the ores are shown by the data in this report. The following treatment methods were employed in the experiments described: Screen analyses were made to determine distribution of values in various screened-sized portions of crushed ore, or to determine optimum size to which a particular ore should be crushed or ground to liberate values, and some-times to determine residual values in various-sized portions of treated material.

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The authors are indebted to the management of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. for permission to publish this paper.

Completion of the procedures detailed in this guide is necessary to obtain a final classification of an explosive compound, mixture, or device and assignment of an "EX" number by DOT, which will allow the producer to offer the explosive for shipment within the United States. This guide also gives procedures for obtaining United Nations (U.N.) classification for shipping outside the United States.

The Bureau of Mines developed and tested in the laboratory several innovative techniques for reclaiming used lubricating oil. These processes included percolation through both chemically treated clay and ion-exchange resins, distillation through batch and continuous wiped-wall vacuum apparatus, treatment with solvent extraction systems, and chemical removal of impurities with chelating agents. In each treatment, the criteria of evaluation was oil recovery and reduction of acidic and metallic components. Both vacuum distillation and solvent treatment ranked high in their abilities to remove acidic and metallic components of the used oil with good oil recoveries. A combination of the two techniques gave the best overall results in terms of quality evaluations made by established bench tests. The methods were not ranked according to economic practicablity.

Recent papers on support of roof and top rock in mines representing present practice in so far as it hits been described by engineers in all of the principal mining countries, cover a relatively aide range of topics. The papers abstracted herein include such subjects as the testing of materials of support, failure and movement of rock above workings, effect of excessive pressures on rock masses, axed the application in mines of timber, metal, concrete, packing, and filling support. It is not within the scope of this paper to present a logical and orderly discussion of the elements of support and their application to conditions influenced by the material worked or the method of mining. Only the essential facts of a paper appear in the abstracts, the idea being to give a fairly clear picture of the behavior of various types of support under brows conditions and to put into concise form important information concerning present practice, modifications of practice, and the trend toward new practice. With such valuable facts from others experience made readily available, it Is hoped that the engineer with particular and often trying problems may obtain suggestions that will be immediately helpful.
