The use of techniques and equipment designed to pneumatically place backfill into an underground mine opening through boreholes for subsidence abatement has historically met with limited success, largely due to the inability to directly monitor the placement of the backfill in the opening. The success of a backfilling project cannot be guaranteed if it is not known whether the underground opening has been completely filled with backfill material. To overcome the inability to directly monitor backfill placement, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a pneumatic backfilling system that allows for direct viewing of the backfill as it is placed in an underground mine opening. This system utilizes a recently developed pneumatic nozzle coupled with an instrumentation package that allows for real-time observations and measurements of backfill placed in an underground opening through a borehole. The nozzle utilizes a high-velocity airstream to redirect backfill falling through a pipe in the borehole and directly in front of the nozzle; the airstream redirects and propels the backfill horizontally into the .mine opening at over 100 ft/s. The instrumentation package, mounted directly to the nozzle, contains a video camera, high-intensity lamps, laser-rangefinder, electronic compass, and water sensor.

This investigation, which began 90 minutes after the February 3, 1995, seismic event, has benefitted from the assistance of a large number of individuals. These individuals provided information, data, analysis, brainstorming opportunities, field equipment, assistance with communication, conducted rock mechanics tests, and provided insight into mining in the southwestern Wyoming trona district. This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts SO122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. This report presents test results, data evaluations, and typical system performance expectations based on wireless electromagnetic propagation measurements performed in the MAGMA Copper Company's San Manuel mine near Tuscon, Arizona during March 30 through April 2 1981. In particular, and at the Bureau's request, this work was coordinated with testing of MF prototype vehicular radios being developed by A.R.F. Products, Inc. with USBM support under Contract H0308004 as part of a system to be marketed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. This testing also employed a prototype vehicular antenna developed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. with USBM upport under previous Contract P0382223. The work was performed under USBM contract J0308012, Propagation of EM Signals in Underground Metal/Non-metal Mines. The authors wish to thank Mr. Hank Seany, Manager of Mines and Mr. Bob Zerga, Mine Superintendent who so kindly arranged for the visit. Particular thanks are given to Mr. Al Metcalf who arranged the logistical details of our underground work, and whoa forward thinking program toward improving general mine communications at MAGMA provided the test-bed context for evaluation of the prototype equipment. Mr. Jiminez's effort was instrumental in performing the testing, and he also provided a detailed understanding of the existing multi-level, multi-frequency trolleyphone system at MAGMA. the authors are also indebted to Dr. Larry Stolarczyk of A.R.F. for numerous detailed consultations on MF technology, and who was present and participated in the majority of the testing. 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND ON COPPER MINING AT MAGMA the San Manuel mine is the largest copper mine in the U.S., efficiently extracting copper and molybdenum sulfide from the low-grade San Manuel ore body.This ellipsoidal ore-shell body, with major workings located 2000-3000 feet mbelow the surface, has ore shell thickness varying between 100 and 1000 feet over a longitudinal extent of some 8000 feet, and with major & minor crossectional axes of about 5000 and 2500 feet respectively. The San Manuel mine operation employs in excess of 1000 men/shift with gross ore production between 60,000 and 70,000 tons/day. The mining operation employs the block caving technique; actively being implemented on three levels (2075,2375,2675 feet for haulage, and 2015,2315,2615 product/grizzly levels). The ore haulage is largely via D.C. trolley trains to four (3A,3B,3C,3D) product shafts for skipping to the surface. An additional three shafts at two locations are used to convey men, materials, and developmental rock extractions into and out of the mine. On each haulage level, the trains carry ore an average of two miles one-way from the ore raises to the dump points. 1.2 TOPOLOGICAL BRIEF OF THE HAULAGE LEVELS The 2375 level, on which all the testing was conducted, is illustrated in

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

Large open stopes mined by vertical crater retreat or sublevel s are sometimes backfilled with uncemented sand to support the stope walls and alleviate rock bursts. The failure of bulkheads in two different mines prompted a research project at the Bureau of Mines to prevent a recurrence of these failures. A series of laboratory tests with drains and sand filters was conducted to measure the bulk-head pressures when adequate drainage was maintained. Results showed that bulkhead pressure was reduced to near zero while drains were in operation, as compared to full hydrostatic pressure when drains were blocked or drainage was restricted. A relatively simple, free-draining bulkhead was shown to be adequate.

"Respirable-sized quartz, a well-established fibrogenic mineral dust, is compared with kaolin in erythrocyte hemolysis assays aher treatment with saline dispersion of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, a primary phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant. Both dusts are rendered inactive after treatment, but the membranolytic activity is partly to fully restored aher treatment with phospholipase Ai. an enzyme normally associated with cellular plasma membranes and lysosomes. Phospholipid-coated dusts were incubated for periods of 2-72 h at a series of applied enzyme concentrations, and the adsorbed lipid species and hemolytic activity were quantitated at each time for both dusts. Surfactant was lost more readily from quartz than from kaolin, with consequent more rapid restoration of mineral surface hemolytic activity for quartz. Interactions of surfactant and mineral surface functional groups responsible for the mineral-specific rate differences, and implications for determining the mineral surface bioavailability of silica and silicate dusts, are discussed. INTRODUCTIONMineral particles depositing in the lung acinus will contact an aqueous coating containing surfactant molecules spread on the air-liquid interface and dispersed within this hypophase; the primary components of that surfactant are diacyl lecithin phospholipids (King and Clements, 1972; King, 1982). Adsorption of this surfactant can suppress the cytotoxicity of mineral dusts (Marks, 1957). Suppression of hemolytic activity, a measure of membranolytic potential and an indicator of bioavailability of the mineral surface, of respirable-sized quartz and kaolin clay dusts with the adsorption of dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) has been measured (Wallace et al., 1985). Such contact and adsorption of pulmonary surfactant in vivo may provide a first defense system of the lung against respired dusts."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of current trends in methods employed by the coal industry to dispose of acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment sludge. Thirty-three AMD treatment plants, operated by 11 Pennsylvania coal companies, were randomly surveyed. These plants provided data for calculating sludge volumes, as well as information on sludge settling, transportation, and disposal. Onsite visits allowed observation of problems associated with the various methods of sludge disposal: (1) disposal into a deep mine, (2) permanent retention in ponds, (3) disposal at an active coal refuse area, and (4) onsite burial. Method 1 is the most frequently used and the most environmentally sound. It is apparent, based on this representative sampling of AMD treatment plants, that the magnitude of sludge production is such that an aggressive and directed effort in reduction of sludge volume is seriously needed. The areas of major concern are (1) the amount of surface land required for sludge storage and disposal, (2) reclamation of these disturbed surface areas, and (3) effective and efficient means of removing, transporting, and disposing of AMD sludge. In this report, an engineering approach to the practical problems associated with the existing disposal methods is presented, together with recommendations for future research.

Sixteen elements were determined spectrochemically in the general range of 3 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity columbium . Samples were converted thermally to Cb2 O , mixed with graphite and Ge02 , and excited for 15 seconds using a 15 - ampere dc arc . For the molybdenum determination , the oxidized samples were mixed with NaCl and Geo₂ and excited for 30 seconds . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates , and spectral line transmittance values were measured photometrically . Relative - intensity ratios of selected analytical and internal standard spectral lines were plotted against concentrations of standards to form curves from which concentrations of impurities were read . Average precision of the method was 11.2 percent relative standard deviation .

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particulate systems in general is determined by the properties of the solid and fluid phases and of the interfaces between them. As particle size is reduced, the inter facial effects become increasingly important until, in colloidal systems, they become completely dominant. Interfacial phenomena are especially important in coal processing for a variety of reasons. Because coal is naturally hydrophobic and its density is low, surface forces begin to dominate over gravity at relatively coarse sizes. Coal is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of air, so that surface oxidation occurs readily leading to important variations in surface properties with time and environment. These effects are further compounded by the inherent heterogeneity of the material.Surface characteristics and properties play a significant role in most aspects of coal processing. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface, while agglomeration involves the reduction of surface area and is usually controlled by surface forces. Both solid-solid and solid-liquid separations are influenced by interracial phenomena, Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and are affected by the wetting characteristics of the various solids present and by the need to ensure proper dispersion of the individual particles. Froth notation, of course, separates particles on the basis of differences in surface characteristics. Chemical processes such as leaching generally involve interfacial reactions whose rates depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. Solid-liquid separations and associated processes such as flocculation are strongly dependent on the nature and properties of the solid-liquid interface.In characterizing solid surfaces, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface may depend on the distribution of different petrographic constituents and impurities such as finely disseminated mineral matter, on the extent of surface oxidation, and on adsorption from the environment. These, in turn, will generally determine the surface properties which define particle behavior. Since the relationships between structure etc. , and properties are not generally known, it is usually necessary to measure properties such as wettability and electrical charge directly."

This paper gives results of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations of concentration of western manganese ores during the Bureau of mines manganese-development program initiated in December 1940. The data summarize results obtained from laboratory investigation of concentration of ores from three properties in southeastern Arizona . The high - grade Gray - claims lot B ore , a product of hand sorting , is marketable directly or after sintering treatment . Intermediate - grade lot A selectively mined ore would be marketable after sintering as a plus 35 percent manganese produce , but gravity concentration methods were employed effectively to produce high - grade manganese concentrates with over 80 percent recoveries . Complex association of fine - grained manganese oxides , calcite , and fluorite in a siliceous ground mass limited the recovery of high-grade manganese concentrates obtainable from the low-grade Pyrolusite -group ore . A recovery of 63.7 percent of the manganese was made by flotation in a concentrate that sintered to plus 48 percent manganese grade . The low-grade Davis ore contains iron and manganese oxides too intimately associated to permit production of marketable manganese products . However , good rejection of calcite gangue was obtained by flotation , and the enriched manganese - iron product might have value as a spiegeleisen ore .

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. Alpha silicon nitride fibers , Si3N4 , were successfully grown in graphite crucibles by a new method utilizing silicates and silicon ( S in equations below) as sources of silicon and using carbon , aluminum , and silicon as reducing agents (R in equations below ) . The basic reaction mechanism is believed to be generally as follows : 1,300 - 1,500 ° C S + R + N₂ SiO + RO + N₂ › 3Si0 + R + 2N₂ _1,300 - 1,500° C 3RO + Si¸N • ( 1 ) ( 2 ) A build - up of coatings on the solid raw- material particles hindered the evolution of silicon or silicon monoxide vapor and thereby slowed down further formation of silicon nitride fibers . Free oxygen in the crucible caused the formation of amorphous silicon dioxide ( SiO2 ) fibers . This problem was solved by passing , entering , and exiting gases through layers of lump graphite inside the reaction vessel . The silicon nitride fibers grew best around 1,400 ° C. Nitrogen flow rates from 4 to 6 liters per minute were adequate . The fiber widths were generally only a few microns whereas their lengths sometimes reached one - quarter inch or more . Chemical and X- ray analyses indicated that bulk fiber samples were usually 80 to 90 percent Si3N4 . The fibers had good oxidation resistance to about 1,260 ° C. Thermal shock resistance was excellent . Electrical resistance was determined .

Soapstone commonly is associated with talc , and reports on either commodity usually contain a discussion of the other . From a geological or mineralogical standpoint the combination is justifiable , for soapstone essentially is impure talc . Commercially , however , the relation between them is remote . About 95 per cent of all talc sold in the United States is in ground form, whereas practically all soapstone is sold as furnace blocks or as fabricated structural slabs for many and diverse applications .

"Score of the Bureau's Investigations.There has been outlined in a previous report* the results obtained regarding the adaptability of pulverized waste slate as a filler in road asphalt mixtures. As pointed out in that report the percentage of waste at slate quarries is very high, and the Bureau of Mines has undertaken the problem of discovering new and enlarged outlets for the waste material.Many products such as paper, rubber, road asphalt, floor coverings, paints, etc., require as one of their important constituents a considerable percentage of finely pulverized inert mineral matter to give ""body"", to obtain the desired consistency, or to supply the necessary wearing or other qualities demanded. Such materials are known as ""fillers"". The possibility that slate flour might be used as a filler with advantage in several products other than road asphalt led the Bureau to undertake further investigation.The Importance of Discovering Advantageous UsesIt has been found that in some products slate may be substituted for materials now in use without any marked effect on the quality of the products. A wider use of slate in such products could result only from a definite price advantage as compared with other fillers. Mile it is probable that waste slate may be placed on the market at prices which will encourage its wider use, it is evident that a waste slate utilization industry can never attain sufficient magnitude to definitely assist the slate producers unless it is demonstrated that some definite advantage in quality may be gained when slate is substituted for fillers now in use. The main purpose kept in view throughout the inquiry has been, therefore, to find advantageous uses for waste slate in order that both producer and consumer may be benefited."

Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.
