The computer program XRF4 was designed by the Bureau of Mines to provide for the calculation of several different interelement correction procedures in X-ray fluorescence analysis, including Lachance-Traill, Rasberry-Heinrich, and Claisse-Quintin procedures. The program was written in the BASIC language for timesharing application, and a conversational interaction with the computer is employed during operation. This report presents test problems using data for iron-nickel-chromium alloys and aluminum alloys and directions for use of the program.

A semiquantitative spectrochemical method was developed and applied to the analysis of ash of U.S. coals . A low- temperature ashing procedure was used to minimize the loss of volatile elements . The analytical procedure provides for the estimation of 68 elements including major , minor , and trace constituents . Standards for the trace elements were prepared in a synthetic base mixture that approximates the average composition of U.S. coal ashes . Excitation was achieved with a d- c arc , spectra were recorded photographically , and interpretation was made by visual comparison of spectra of unknowns with spectra of graded standards series . Thirty- six trace elements were found in the analysis of 900 samples . Details of the procedure are presented , including sample and standards preparation , excitation and exposure conditions , spectral lines used , and approximate limits of detectability .

[Early in 1936 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission and other groups interested in forecasts of demand .for petroleum requested the Bureau of Mines to make a physical inventory of crude-oil stocks in the United States. Accordingly, the 74th Congress appropriated funds for conducting such a survey during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1937. In the discussions and hearing2/ relative to the need for the sway, the opinion ms expressed that crude oil held in storage for long periods had lost so much of its gasoline content that he economic significant of total stocks should be discounted materially. The Bureau of Mines tested & ground penetrating radar (GPR) system in the central Florida phosphate district. to determine the feasibility of utilizing GPR technology for subsurface cavity detection. The test area is located in karst topography where sinkhole development is prevalent. State regulations require subsurface drilling of damsites to identify underground anomalies; however, this method is not totally accurate in locating subsurface cavities that could lead to sinkhole development. An electromagnetic method of identifying anoma-lous subsurface conditions could reduce or eliminate the possibility of dam failure due to sinkhole development. The Bureau devised a GPR system that successfully penetrated over 50 ft of overburden and gave recognizable radar return signals characteristic of a rock-cavity interface.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions5/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The Federal Bureau of Mines refined chromium from an aqueous electrolytic process in molten sodium chloride-chromium chloride electrolytes. Oxygen and nitrogen contents were reduced by a factor of 10 to 40, but most other impurities were little changed. The product usually contained a little more iron than the feed. Since iron was entering the bath from the iron pot and the graphite liner at a nearly constant rate, contamination of the chromium deposits by it was more serious at low currents and deposition rates. A few runs in an iron cell with a nickel liner yielded chromium containing one half as much iron as the feed, but up to 1.5 pct. nickel. In all cases the anode feed lay in the bottom of the container, which itself was used as the anode connection. With a 12-in. cell, variations in applied voltage from 0.05 to 1.5, in current from less than 10 to over 100 a., and in initial cathode current densities from less than 100 to over 2,000 a./sq.ft. had little or no effect upon the analysis of the metal produced) except for iron content. Changes in bath analysis from 3 to 11 pct. chromium were also without effect. These changes did bring about large differences in the physical forms of the crystals obtained. The thick heavy crystals produced at low voltage and current contained voids which made them difficult to leach free of chlorides. Easiest to leach were the thin leaf-like crystals obtained at around 1 v.

This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

Petroleum oils of widely different grades have long been clarified or decolorized by contact with fuller's earths. More recently, so-called activated clays have also been used for this purpose. Still more recently ouch clays have been used in the form of nodules termed "catalytic pellets." Clays of varied appearance and from different localities possess the desired bleaching qualities, but evaluation of such clays, so useful to the oil industry, has not been simple. Previous methods of identification and evaluation have largely followed procedures of production methods and were not primarily based upon the fundamental properties of the clays. Thus) a false assumption has grown up that) bleaching clays probably have no common properties on which a-method of comparison can be based. Fuller's earths and activated clays have a large absorptive capacity for the color constituents of petroleum and its products decolorizing is accomplished by bringing the oil into intimate contact with the clay and later separating the decolorized oil from the clay with its load of absorbed coloring matter. Former practice in absorbing "color" was to use the clay as granules or In' powdered form. More recent practice is to use clay pellets that are more abrasion-resistant than the granules. The oil is either filtered through a bed of clay, percolation method, or agitated on contact with the clay, contact method. Viscous oils are decolorized at an elevated temperature, so that their viscosity is lowered to the point at which thorough contact with the clay is insured. Nonhumidifying, nonoxidizing gas, such as dry steam or dry nitrogen, is used to seal such hot oil masses from the atmosphere.

"In the cyanidation of silver ore, the need of oxygen is well recognized. Various methods have been introduced for supplying the oxygen. In usual practice, air is the source of oxygen and the methods of application are mechanical.This article gives the results of touts made to show the rate of dissolution of silver from each of the common silver minerals in cyanide solution, under conditions similar to those used in the practical recovery of silver from its ores. The effect of oxygen in aiding the dissolution of the silver from each mineral is also shown by a comparison of the methods of supplying the oxygen. Oxidation by preliminary roasting (500°C.) of each mineral sample gives the maximum extraction of the silver by treatment with cyanide.Each silver mineral5 used in these experiments was as pure as could be obtained from the mineral dealer. In their natural occurrence, silver minerals are not usually free from mineral impurities. They are usually closely associated with other minerals often forming, a complex mixture. The form of crystallization, the proportions, and properties of the diluent that incases or has been dispersed with the silver mineral may decidedly affect the dissolution rate of the silver from each mineral. While the following results should aid in the cyanidation of silver ores, each ore should be studied from the basis of the form and condition of the silver that is to be recovered.All the tests reported in this article were made on synthetic samples, prepared by mixing the particular silver mineral with clean sea sand. Each mineral was ground in an agate mortar to pass 100-mesh before mixing with the sand which had previously been ground in a porcelain pebble mill to 100-mesh. Such proportions of each mineral and the sand were used as to give a head assay of approximately 20 ounces of silver per ton to the synthetic sample.Agitation was carried on in stoppered bottles approximately one-third full of pulp, method apparently supplied all the atmospheric oxygen that would be taken up by the solution under usual conditions, because tests conducted in open bottles did not show increased recovery,"

The Taylor Creek lead-zinc deposit is on Taylor Creek, approximately 1-1/2 miles from tidewater, at the head of Duncan Canal, on the east side of Kupreanof Island, Petersburg district, southeastern Alaska. The property was located in 1903, and a 30-foot discovery cut was put to the west tank of the creek. Very little prospecting end developing has been done since that time. The property was examined by J. C. Roehm, associate mining engineer, Territorial Department of Mines, Juneau, Alaska, in June 1946. From exposure n the creek, a mineralized zone with possible dimensions of 1,700 feet by 1,000 feet was indicated. The general strike was northwest, and the dip was low and variable to the northwest. During September through November 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted a project on the property. Four diamond-drill holes, totaling 770.5 linear feet, were drilled from the surface and 280 lineal feet of hand trenching done. The mineral deposit was found to occur as patches that appear to be a replacement in dolomitic limestone. The patches of mineralization are small, irregularly shaped, and irregularly distributed. Maps showing the location of the drill holes and trenches, analyses of the cores from the drill holes, and anal lee of the samples from the trenches accompany this report (see, also, appendixes A, B, and C).

Preliminary solvent extraction studies , reported by the Bureau of Mines (5) , have been continued and expanded to improve on the previous estimate of process requirements . The solvent extraction portion of the process was examined at a scale large enough to enable meaningful extrapolation of the results to geometrically similar equipment of plant size . About 82 pct of the beryllium was recovered from approximately 0.5 pct beryllium oxide (Be0) Spor Mountain , Utah , ore by a process involving ( 1 ) sulfuric acid leaching , ( 2 ) counter current decantation (CCD ) washing , (3 ) iron ( III) reduction by sodium hydrosulfide ( NaHS ) , ( 4 ) beryllium solvent extraction by di - 2- ethylhexyl phosphoric acid ( EHPA) , ( 5 ) caustic stripping of beryllium- bearing EHPA, (6 ) hydrolysis of sodium beryllate - caustic strip liquor , and (7 ) calcination of beryllium hydroxide (Be ( OH ) 2 ) formed in step (6 ) . The resulting beryllia assayed 98 to 99 pct Be0 and was suitable for most nonnuclear uses . Best overall results were obtained by using pH 2 , 1.6 grams of BeO per liter of leach liquor as feed and 0.25 N EHPA in kerosine containing 2 wt vol pct (grams per 100 ml of solution ) isodecanol ( IDA ) as solvent . Analysis of the data indicated that a commercial plant would achieve 95- pct overall extraction operating at 45 ° C with 20 hp per 1,000 gal of dispersion in each of seven mixer- settlers , having 290 gal per ton of ore hourly mixer capacity and 90 gal per ton of ore hourly settler capacity . At least 79 lb H2SO4 , 13 lb sodium hydroxide (NaOH ) , 3 lb NaHS , 0.25 lb kerosine , 0.07 lb polyacrylic flocculant , 0.03 lb EHPA , and 0.007 lb IDA would be required in H2SO4 leaching and subsequent processing to recover 1 lb BeO .

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . "SUMMARYThis report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, end 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.The inspection test data supplied by the participating manufacturers consist of octane and performance numbers, tetraethyllead content, dye color, and other characteristics usually listed in aviation gasoline specifications, such as AN-F-48a or ASTM Designation D910-47T. These data are tabulated and averaged by grades in tables 1 through 4 and, as reported, meet the AN-F-48a and similar specifications with a few exceptions. Two grade 80 gasolines show a lean-mixture octane rating slightly below 80.0, and 91/98 grade fuel shows a lean-mixture rating of 90.9 and a rich-mixture rating of 97.5, two 100/130 grade gasolines have a rich-mixture performance number slightly below 130.0, and one 115/145 grade gasoline shows a rich-mixture performance number of 144.5. However, octane and performance number averages are above the mini¬mum requirements for each grade. Tetraethyllead content in the 91/98 and 100/ 130 grades generally is above the maximum outlined in these specifications, whereas dye color for each of the four grades, with the exception of two gasolines in grades 80 and 100/130, is that designated for the particular grade. Distillation requirements, with a few exceptions at individual points, are met by gasolines of all grades. Reid-vapor-pressure, copper-dish-residue, heat-of-combustion or aniline-gravity-constant, freezing-point, and copper-strip-corrosion requirements are met by all gasolines so far as reported. No data for some of these tests wore submitted on a few of the gasolines. One gasoline, grade 115/145, shows a sulfur content greater than the specified maximum."

This paper deals principally with the retreating method of mining as applied in the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co.'s deep Conglomerate mine, pointing cut some of the difficulties encountered in deep mining and describing the particular methods used at Calumet to carry on a large-scale operation at great depth with a minimum hazard factor. The circular is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs which is being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Acknowledgment is due to those officials and operating heads of the Calumet & Hecla Cc. whose years of familiarity with the conditions developing at the Conglomerate mine as great depth was attained have enabled them to contribute valuable information to the subject of deep-mining problems.

The desirability of efficient control of air currents, and the necessity of supplying metal-mine workers with better and safer working conditions, has created an active interest in metal-mine ventilation, especially in recent years. This paper discusses the subject both with regard to efficiency and economy, as well as safety and health. It is based on personal observations of the writer from over four year's study of metal mines in six States, in which more than 50 mines were visited. Many of these were studied in detail; in all several thousand working places were examined, and readings taken relative to ventilation run into the tens of thousands.Object of ventilating metal mines:Whereas in coal mines ventilation is generally regarded as essential, in many metal mines, especially shallow ones, the operators pay little attention to ventilation, or ignore it altogether. Recent shortage of labor, and numerous accidents to which State compensation laws have directed attention, are causing metal-mine operators to regard ventilation more seriously, especially in deep, large mines.There is, in fact, greater necessity for adequate ventilation of metal mines than of coal mines. The latter require air currents to remove explosive gases and the fumes of explosives, but metal mines, in addition to the need of removing fumes of explosives, and occasionally explosive gases, frequently have need of removing dusts dangerous to health, reduction of high temperatures and high humidity, and removal of inert but unhealthful gases like CO2 and nitrugen. The generally accepted superior healthfulness of coal miners as compared with metal miners, is probably due in large part to the better air circulation in working places of coal mines.

The heats of formation of two lead vanadates (Pb2V207 and Pb3V208) and manganese vanadate (MnV206) were determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, supplementing previous Bureau of Mines measurements of the vanadates of calcium, magnesium} and sodium. Heat and free energy data for 11 vanadates were assembled on a common basis. The stability of comparable vanadates (with respect to the oxides) increases in the following order: Magnesium, manganese, lead, calcium, sodium.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

This paper is the second of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine, (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers; (2) the particle shape of crushed product; (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different tries of primary crushers; and ( 4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Primary crushing has received comparatively little attention in the technical literature in spite of tine fact that the design of the whole crushing plant should be correlated to the performance of the primary crusher.

[An important problem in the efficient conduct of industry is that of helping the individual employee to formulate in attitude toward his work which will result in the reduction of accidents and the promotion of safety. Perhaps nowhere is the need greater for this type of psychological training of carefully selected men than at oil refineries whore both the raw materials and the finished products are highly inflammable and explosive in nature. However, the refinery organization usually is well adapted to educational safety activities -- much more so than in the producing, pipe line, and marketing departments where the personnel are more or less scattered; but the sore general principles of conduct hold true in any industrial organization. This problem of directing the attention of tie employees to their specific tasks or helping them to control and frequently eliminate hazards engendered by adverse mental attitude or emotion is met most satisfactorily by carefully selecting applicants and placing theta at jobs for which their ability best fits them. The subsequent training of these carefully selected employees to assure their Most effective work in accident prevention may be accomplished in a variety of gays, ouch as by personal supervision and instruction, inspections, drills, and by the studied use of well thought out safety pamphlets and posters.]
