This report compares the quality of zirconium metal prepared by batch reduction of zirconium tetrachloride by (1) sodium, (2) magnesium, and (3) mixtures of sodium and magnesium. Criteria for quality are based on chemical analyses and hardness testing of zirconium arc-melted from sponge. The best quality zirconium with respect to low oxygen content and hardness numbers was prepared by reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with a mixture of sodium and magnesium. It was found that this reaction could be successfully carried out by two methods: (1) addition of sodium and magnesium before the initial reaction and (2) periodic injection of sodium during reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium. The largest quantity of metal was found to be recovered from experiments in which a mixture of sodium and magnesium was used. Magnesium appeared to be a better reductant than sodium because magnesium-reduced zirconium contained less oxygen and exhibited lower hardness numbers than sodium-reduced metal.

The value of brine analyses in the study of petroleum-engineering problems was recognized early in the history of petroleum. The Bureau of Mines before 1928 had indicated in several reports.3/ ways in which analyses might be used. Because of the confusion resulting from attempts to correlate the work of different chemists using greatly varying methods of analysis and systems of computation and expression of results, a paper presenting the methods used by the Bureau of Mines was prepared and published in 1928. This system of determining the characteristic constituents of oil-field waters and of calculating and reporting results has been widely adopted by the petroleum industry. The earliest and most obvious use of water analyses is determination of the source of water infiltrating into petroleum and natural-gas wells. For this purpose it is necessary that an analysis of the connate water of the formation from which the oil is produced be available and that an analysis of the contaminated water be made. By comparing these analyses with those of connate waters from formations higher in the structure, the formation from which the infiltrating water comes may be identified.

The wire saw, introduced by the Bureau of Mines about two years ago, has revolutionized slate quarrying in Pennsylvania. The success of the saw since its early accomplishments has become greater and greater as the equipment has been perfected and skill acquired .in its use. In the first test made, a cutting rate of 9.7 square feet per hour was attained; in the next four cuts, made early in 1927, the average rate of cutting was increased to 12.8 square feet per hour; in 1928 a maximum of 34 square feet per hour had been attained, with a general average of about 20 to 25 square feet, The wire saw is now regarded as essential equipment in practically all of the quarries in the Bangor, Pen Argyl, and Windgap districts. The wire saw consists of a three-strand steel cable of 3/16 or 1/4 inch diameter running as an endless belt. The driving pulley is a 40-inch double-groove cast-iron sheave. A tension pulley supported by a frame mounted on wheels may travel back and forth on a short track. A weight of 800 to 2,000 pounds gives the desired tension on the wire. The driving units consist of electric motors with direct-drive compactly enclosed gear reduction, or double-belt speed-reduction units; the former is preferred. Silent chain and. pinion gear reductions are used to a limited extent. The travelling speed of the wire is about 15 feet per second. The driving and tension equipment are shown in Figure 1, A.

Natural gas is a general term applied to the gas obtained from oil or gas wells. It is the most widely used of all gaseous fuels. The principal disadvantage in the use of this and other gaseous fuels is the difficulty encountered in the storage and transportation of large quantities in the gas state. Handling in the liquid state is possible, but reduced temperatures are required since methane (table 1) is the principal component of most natural gases that are used as fuels. Actually, liquid storage has been utilized both here and abroad;3 however, the Cleveland disaster4 has pointed out the need for a critical evaluation of the hazards involved in the storage of this cryogenic fuel. Accordingly, a program was undertaken to obtain basic data that could be used to assess these hazards. In this report, the factors to be considered in an evaluation of the fire and explosion hazards associated with any fuel are each discussed briefly. These factors are then used to assist in the design of experiments for the evaluation of the hazards associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) relative to those associated with other common fuels. Experiments have been conducted on the vaporization of LNG, the mixing of LNG vapors with air, the effect of temperature and nitrogen dilution on the limits of flammability of methane in air, the burning rates of LNG and other fuels, flame radiation, and extinguishment of fires above liquid pools. Based on the results of these experiments, LNG can be stored safely in suitably designed above-ground tanks surrounded by earthen dikes in much the same manner as gasoline.

Blister copper was successfully deoxidized with any of a variety of reducing gases; lancing techniques or a vertical-column furnace were used to contact the copper and gases. Of the gases tested, butane, when used to lance molten copper at about 1,200° C, reaction temperature, was slightly more effective than propane, natural gas, carbon monoxide, or reformed gas for deoxidizing copper from about 1.0 to less than 0.1 percent oxygen content, Laboratory-scale tests revealed that the vertical furnace, composed of a heated column packed with silicon carbide chips or hollow carbon cylinders, was significantly faster and more efficient than the lancing technique for deoxidizing molten copper with any of the gases tested. Comparison of the gaseous-reduction method with the conventional poling method suggests that the gaseous method has important technical and economic advantages for deoxidizing blister copper to any readily controlled amount of residual oxygen content.

Techniques for recovering scandium from uranium plant iron sludges and from wolframite concentrates are described. The best procedure found comprised (1) dissolution with sulfuric acid, (2) preliminary concentration by solvent extraction with a primary alkyl amine, (3) further enrichment and purification by a combination of ion exchange, solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and calcination. Recovery of scandium from these raw materials, which contained 0.058 and 0.14 percent scandium, ranged from 83 to 90 percent in products analyzing 99.6 to 99.9 percent scandium oxide.

Canopies were designed, fabricated, installed, and demonstrated for mining machinery in 3-foot coal seams. A Wilcox PJ20 Auger miner, a Wilcox Bolter, a bee Norse 245 miner, and an Elkhorn Scoop AR3 modified to AR4 were fitted with canopies. The Wilcox Bolter canopy was hydraulically adjustable in height; the rest were manually pin adjustable. The machine operators' comments were adverse in each case. Restriction of visibility and body constriction into unaccustowed and tiring attitude were major objections, causing increased hazards and fatigue. Recommendations are made that roll bar protection be furnished in place of canopies for 3-foot seams to provide partial protection by deflecting and supporting roof falls but not covering the head of the operator. In this way, the effect on visibility would be minimized and fatigue from body restriction would not be increased.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1940, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circu- lar 71103. Information Circular 71584, published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved during the calendar year 1940. The present list contains the information given in those two circulars, as well as approvals issued during the calendar year 1941. It embraces electrically operated air compressors, coal drills, conveyors and loading machines, electrical equipment for mine fans, mining machines and trucks, mine pumps, rock- dust distributors, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives, storage-battery power trucks and shuttle cars, mine telephones, junction and distribution boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, flashlights, methane detectors, and single- and multiple-shot blasting units. The equipment listed is not approved by the Bureau of Mines until found by inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in "schedules" prepared upon the basis of many years of ex- perience in dealing with safety problems confronting the coal-mining in- dustry. The use of such equipment in mines that are known to be gassy,. as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining.

The Mary Arnold Mining Co. in 194.3 owned 292 acre s of mineral land in Christian County, Mo., and was one of two companies with milling facilities in southern-central Missouri. Production from this property between 19.37 and 1941 amounted to 1,718 tons of zinc in the form of zinc concentrate. Because of the urgent war requirements for additional zinc and the existing facilities for treatment of zinc-lead ores at these mines, in the winter of 1943-44, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposits by churn drilling in an endeavor to outline enough ore to maintain production of zinc from this district. Five holes aggregating 1,043 feet were bored.

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. This volume is the second of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System, and Volume IV: User's Manual for OPMHS/2. The dragline model described in this report simulates the movement of the dragline bucket across the digging face, the swing load, the dump, and swing back. It is programmed to handle chopdown, key cut, main cut, and rehandling operations. Provisions have been made for simulating equipment and mining delays. Any mining method can be specified in terms of numbered blocks, the dragline positions for the mining block and the dumping location for the block. Accounting procedures permit the calculation of production rates, rehandle volume, dig and delay times. The model can be used to study the effects of varying mining conditions, cut width, and spoiling sequence with special reference to toxic spoil, overburden and bench removal procedures. The basic input data for the model include machine parameters, the geology and material characteristics, the mining parameter, and the delay characteristics of the equipment.

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in recent years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.

"INTRODUCTION The provision of escapeways from coal mines is a moral and, in most States, a legal obligation of mine owners and operators. The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

In 1969, the number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry was lower than in any previous year and the number of nonfatal injuries was lower than in any preceding year except 1968. Fatal injuries in 1969 totaled 203 with frequency rates of 0.85 per million man-hours of worktime and 0.36 per million tons of coal These rates were new annual lows. Nonfatal injuries totaled 9,917 with frequency rates of 41.76 per million man-hours and 17.42 per million tons. The severity rate for fatal and nonfatal injuries combined was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours. The average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. These statistics represent the injury experience of an average of 133,302 employees per day working an average of 225 days in 5,955 coal mines for a total of 237-5 million man-hours worked and a coal output of 565 2 million tons

The production of beryllium metal and its alloys is one of the most difficult tasks in metallurgy. In this report we shall examine the progress made in this work- in the last 15 years; taking into account the outstanding publications, including; those of the patent literature, and the information obtained during our 20 years? experience with this metal. The difficulties experienced' in producing elementary beryllium derive from the physical nature as well as from the chemical behavior of the metal and its compounds. Its oxygen affinity is about the same as that of calcium and a little higher than that of magnesium. Its chlorine affinity is much lower than that of magnesium, about equal that, of manganese, and little higher than that of aluminum. The sulfur and nitrogen affinity is probably almost the same as that of calcium for these elements, and beryllium carbide is probably more stable than aluminum carbide, A14C3. The intermetallic affinity of beryllium may be given in descending order, as follows: Nickel - copper - iron. It forms eutectics with -aluminum and silicon as well as with silver. It does not alloy with magnesium and only partly with calcium. Its oxide melts at 2,570° C., but CaO and BaO form readily fusible eutectics with BeO(65).3/ No igneous solvents are known for BeO, which behaves id this regard like Mgo. The beryllium silicate is a strong compound, the aluminete much less so; however, CaO easily displaces Be in the heated mixtures. The Anhydrous chloride hydrolyzes, and it cannot be made from aqueous liquors. It sublimes at 488° C, and melts at 405° C., The fluoride, which, is very Soluble in water, hydrolyzes also, but a kind of oxyfluoride of the approximate formula 2 BeO?5 BeF2 can be made from solutions by dessication. The fluoride melts at 800° C, and boils above 1,100° C. It forms very stable double fluorides with alkalifluorides, which have very low melting points and are fairly soluble in water. They are more stable than the analogous fluosilicates and the sodium fluoaluminate cryolite.

As part of a general plan for control and economic utilization of the waters of the Missouri River Basin as well as development of its inherent power resources, the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army has under construction a rolled earth dam near the site of old Fort Randall in South Dakota. The dam is in Charles Mix and Gregory Counties on the Missouri River at a point about 922 miles above its mouth. It is approximately 125 air-line miles southeast of Pierre and 55 miles southwest of Mitchell, S. Dak. The storage reservoir to be formed by the dam will extend upstream for 150 miles and, at maximum operating pool level, will cover an area of some 107,000 acres. It will have a storage capacity of 6.2 million acre feat.

The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

The consumption of slab zinc in the United States increased sevenfold in less than a half century since 1900. Therein is reflected the innate characteristics of this versatile and nearly indispensable nonferrous metal whose use has grown at more than twice the rate of industrial production. The total metal consumption was substantially stimulated during the two World War periods, which were likewise marked by notable changes in use pattern accompanied by shifts in geographic distribution. This information circular summarizes basic data collected for many years by the Bureau of Mines, but in particular presents for the 1940-45 period details derived from the comprehensive slab zinc consumption survey inaugurated in 1940. The total consumption of slab zinc has been broken down into four major categories galvanizing, brass products, rolled zinc, and zinc-base alloys -- with minor applications grouped under a fifth heading, other uses. Ex- cept for the inclusion of zinc-base alloys with other uses before 1926, the above-named segregation has been shown for the entire period 1900-45. 11- though a substantial tonnage was taken by all groups in all years, there were large shifts in the use pattern in both World War periods. In both, the Allied Powers depended heavily on the United States for zinc-bearing products, especially those required by war industrius. The departures from usual uses were, however, much more marked during the second than in the first period, mainly because the United States could not have met the tro- mendously expanded war-materiel demands had the greater slab zinc needs of a period of high industrial activity been supplied. The geography of consumption is known in detail only for 1940-45. Even in that short period, substantial shifts are observable, largely the reaction from conversion to war production in 1940-41 and reconversion to peacetime consumption in 1945. However, there is so evidence of other shifts in consumption centers that appear to reflect longer-term develop- ments.
