"INTRODUCTION In the course of its studies of the explosibility of various coal dusts in the Experimental coal mine, the Bureau of Mines has tested coals representing the entire range of volatile content found in the United States. In connection with their work the Bureau's field engineers some¬times meet operating officials who are not impressed by the fact that there is an explosion hazard in mines working low—volatile coals. Actually the difference in explosion hazard between high—volatile and low—volatile coals is one of degree and not of kind. The purpose of this paper is to set forth briefly the experimental evidence that has been accumulated on the explosibility of coal dusts containing 8 to 31 percent volatile matter on a dry, mineral—matter—free basis.There have been numerous dust explosions in mines in which coals were worked that have compositions within this range. Those explosions are listed in an appendix, together with a bibliography of Bureau of Mines papers describing explosion tests in the Experimental coal mine."

This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.

A real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitor has been developed on the basis of the successful National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) designed Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of a recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study were to modify the PDM to measure the submicrometre fraction of the aerosol in a real-time monitoring underground instrument. Mine testing focused on use of the monitor in engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved. Studies, including a selection during Longwall (LW) moves as described in this paper, demonstrated how DPM concentrations from vehicles fluctuate under varying ventilation and operational conditions. Correlation between the current SKC DPM measurement system and real-time DPM monitors were conducted and results from six mines show a correlation between elemental carbon (EC) and the new monitor DPM mass ranging from .51 to .81 with R2 >.90. These differences are suspected to be due to variations from mine to mine in aspects such as mine atmospheric contamination, vehicle fleet variations, fuel type, engine maintenance, engine combustion efficiency, engine behaviour or interference from other submicrometre aerosol. Real-time monitoring readily reflects the movement of individual diesel vehicles and allows pin-pointing of high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. DPM monitoring approaches that have been available for some time based on shift average monitoring do not readily allow successful engineering evaluation exercises to determine acceptability of pollution levels. Identification of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices t o reduce miners? exposures without waiting for laboratory analysis results.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. Twenty-two samples of West Virginia coals were carbonized at 9000 C by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Eighteen samples represented the Coa1burg, No. 2 Gas, No. 2 Gas and Peerless, Powellton, Eagle, Big Eagle, Lower Eagle, Sewell, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6 beds in Fayette County, and four samples represented the Sewell and Fire Creek beds in Greenbrier County. Expansion characteristics of the majority of samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. The coals in Fayette County are high-volatile A, medium-volatile, and low-volatile in rank, and the Greenbrier coals are medium-volatile in rank. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coking. All coke strength indices are within acceptable limits for metallurgical coking coals. All the high-volatile A coals contracted and the medium-and low-volatile coals expanded in the sole-heated oven expansion test.

[Owing to the comparatively high freezing point of nitroglycerin (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 37, 38)3/ - 1.9° C. and 13.0° C. for the labile and stabile modifications, respectively, as determined by Hibbert (16) - manufacturers of dynamites have incorporated into the liquid portion of these composite explosives various substances capable of participating in an explosion, to depress the above-mentioned freezing point. Aromatic nitro-compounds, chiefly nitrobenzenes, nitrotoluenes, and nitronaphthalenes, have been used to a considerable extent (11), but such nitrosubstitution products have not proved altogether satisfactory, as has been shown clearly by Naoúm. (14). Consequently there has been a strong tendency in recent years to replace them with one or more of several nitric esters, among which the following (29, 35) have been prominent: Dinitrochlorhydrin (monochlorhydrin dinitrate); nitrosugars, for example, sucrose octanitrate (19); tetranitrodiglycerin (diglycerin tetranitrate); nitroglycol (ethyleneglycol dinitrate); and diethyleneglycol dinitrate (13, 46, 47). Of these, nitroglycol (33, 4l, 45, 48, 49, 65) is outstanding in importance. As the Bureau of fines is naturally interested in the analytical chemistry of the "explosive oils," it seemed desirable to bring together in this report the widely scattered experimental work covering the problem of differentiation that has appeared in various chemical and physicochemical publications.]

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Northern field of Pennsylvania is realized when it is known that, for the 8-year period 1944-51, all pumping plants in this region pumped an average volume of 112.5 billion gallons of water from the mines to the surface each year. This is over 214,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 400 feet each year for that period (12).4 By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area; the average volume of water pumped from the mines in the Northern field each year during the 8-year period was 58 percent more than the volume impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The natural configuration of the drainage area overlying the Northern field subdivides the total area into two major drainage areas-the Lackawanna River drainage area and the Susquehanna River drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin. Although the 169-square-mile drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin is slightly less than half that of the Lackawanna River drainage area (10), the total volume of water pumped to the surface from mines in the Wyoming Basin is 21 percent more than the total volume pumped to the surface from mines in the Lackawanna Basin. From this, it is apparent that the Susquehanna River and the pervious deposits in the buried valley over which it flows in its course across the coal measures of Wyoming Valley is the greatest single source of mine water affecting mines in this area. Because of its relatively flat terrain, the wide flood plain of Wyoming Valley does not facilitate rapid runoff; consequently, much of the surface water seeps directly into the buried-valley deposits and eventually into the mine workings.

Previous studies at the Bureau of Mines outlined the hazards of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures in the presence of pyrite-bearing ores. The recent trend in the mining industry to strengthen AN-FO by the addition of aluminum metal raised the question regarding the effect of aluminum in AN-FO in the presence of pyrite-bearing ore. Laboratory work, similar to that done previously, demonstrated that the temperature of a self-sustaining reaction in the presence of AN-FO ore-aluminum is not lower than that for a comparable AN-FO-ore mixture. However, as might be expected from known thermochemical data, once initiated, the resulting reactions between AN-FO, aluminum, and pyrite are much more vigorous than those observed for AN-FO and pyrites alone. The temperature required to produce a self-sustained reaction for the combinations tested in this study is 250°±20° F while in the previous Bureau study, reactions were noted, in some instances, at 150° F. The different pyritic ores may be the cause of this variation.

Every mine contains inflammable materials, either in form of the minerals mined or in the form of brought-in supplies. Although great efforts are made to make mines as far as possible fireproof and to prevent ignition sources, the possibility of mine fires, like that of other accidents, will always continue to exist. Detailed statistics are available for coal mines. They show (65,112) that the number of major mine fires in the USA over the last 20 years has remained more or less constant with approximately 50 per year. The same number is reported (26) for the British coal mines. Other countries (147) report about 1 major fire for every 10 million tons of coal production. Conflicting data are published on the number of fatalities caused by fires, presumably because frequently deviating opinions on the cause of death exist. On the average (82,99) 4 miners are killed per year in the US and in the British coal mines. Although this number is much smaller than that for several other causes of fatalities, one must keep in mind that almost every small fire can develop into a large disaster.

This is one of a series of papers written for the consideration of operators of small gold and silver mines in the West. The paper discusses smelting schedules, general smelting practices that have a bearing on rates, and the reasons for penalties or credits for certain constituents of ores. Crude gold and silver ores generally are shipped to smelters only when milling facilities are not available; however, high tailing losses in milling a high-grade or refractory ore or low smelting rates because of the fluxing value of an are may make direct smelting more economical.

This report presents the results of an investigation in Which the chloroform solubilities of coals and chars are related to rank, temperature of thermal treatment, time at a given temperature, vacuum thermal treatment, plasticity, oxidation, blending, and mass spectral analyses and molecular weights of the extracts. It was found that the quantity of chloroform extract obtained from chars can be altered by creating a vacuum above the charge during preparation of the char, increasing the time at temperatures within the plastic temperature range, and by utilizing different rates of heating to attain a given temperature. Relationships found between the chloroform solubilities of chars produced at temperatures within the plastic temperature range and the relative fluidities in this temperature range indicate that the chloroform-soluble portion of the char is a significant component of the plastic mass. Chloroform-extract yields from chars made from blends of coals cannot be calculated from chloroform-extract yields obtained from chars made from the component coals.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews and assesses the technology for preparing electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals from molten alkali metal cyanide baths. Methods are described for the preparation and purification of the cyanide electrolyte. Vacuum drying, fusion, and purity of the cyanide salts are discussed. Use of a sodium borosilicate test tube as a sodium-ion-conducting membrane for the addition of the desired platinum-group metal is described. The optimum plating parameters of potential and current density for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir coatings that result in the best deposits are given. A method for producing platinum-rhodium alloy coatings of predetermined composition is also described. The importance of careful substrate surface preparation is illustrated. While problems still remain with respect to coating porosity, careful application of the methods described permits the preparation of adherent, coherent electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals.

This paper describes the mining methods and operating costs for 1938 at the South Burns shaft, situated in the Cripple Creek district, Colorado. The shaft is operated by Golden Conqueror Mines, Inc., through which portions of the properties of the Acacia Cold Mining Co., The Free Coinage Gold Mining Co., and The United Gold Mines Co. are worked under lease. During 1938, 30,773.61 dry tons of ore averaging $9.59 in gold per ton was mined. Of this, 10,138.439 tons averaging $10.65 per ton was produced on company account, and 20,635.171 tons averaging $9.05 per ton was produced by "split-check" lessees.

Comprehensive field tests were made in the Gas Hills, Wyo., to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in marginal uranium deposits. The tests were made on property owned by Federal American Partners, Gas Hills, Wyo., and included seismic refraction, self-potential, induced polarization, magnetometer, electrical resistivity, airborne infrared thermal scanning, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling with electrode spacings in the range of 25 to 50 feet was most diagnostic of faults. The method is quick, cheap, accurate, and one that can be easily used by personnel employed by mining companies to detect and delineate faults.

A method was devised and developed by the Bureau of Mines for decomposing manganese sulfate at significantly lower temperature than that required by the conventional procedure of using heat alone. This technique, called the partial reduction method, effected decomposition at 700° to 800° C, as compared to 900° 1,000° C normally required. The process consisted of heating, in the absence of oxygen, a mixture of manganese sulfate and a controlled quantity of a reducing agent. The suitability of commercial-type equipment was tested in laboratory-size models of an externally heated rotary kiln, a r bbled muffle-hearth furnace, and a fluidized-bed reactor. The rabbled-hearth furnace gave the best results with the least operating difficulty produced a gas containing more than 80 percent SC and eliminated 96 percent of the sulfur when coal was used as the reductant. Sintering of the powdery decomposition product produced an agglomerate containing, in percent, 63.6 Mn and 0.4 S.

Mining coal by employing a method called longwall mining is gaining more and more popularity in the United states since it offers many advantages over the conventional deep mining methods. Those advantages are a higher productivity, an almost total extraction of the mineral since no pillars must be left behind for support, and an increase in safety since the personnel are protected by the shield supports and rarely have to work near unsupported, exposed root. However, on some longwalls, the dust levels liberated by various equipment such as belt conveyors, chain conveyors, crushers, longwall shearers, and moving shield supports can exceed the maximum permissible limits and therefore have an adverse effect on productivity. Many attempts have been made over the past years to reduce the dust liberation by changing designs, installing various types of sprays or scrubbers, treating the mine water with wetting agents, or even using foam to catch dust before it becomes airborne. In the year 1984, the Bureau of Mines awarded Eickhoff Corporation a contract to demonstrate a water-jet-assisted cutting system for the multiple purposes of reducing dust levels, improving bit consumption, and increasing material size. During the previous phases of this contract, various trials were conducted aimed to design, build, and test d shearer loader to meet the objective of the contract. In the early stages of the research program, it was expected to see a reduction in the overall power consumption of the machine due to the fact that the high-pressure water jet would pre-cut the mineral in front of the bit. This, in turn, would then reduce the bit wear. Since there is less cutting action performed by the bit, a reduction of the dust liberation and a reduction of product fines was sought.

The realization that there is a limit to our supply of domestic mineral and fuel resources, which have been taken for granted until recently, has stimulated the need for conservation and optimum utilization of the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels-resources critical to our national economy. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop new technology, improve existing technology, and disseminate information related to mineral resources and industries. Fulfilling the mission is necessary to insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and alternative supplies of energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible cost to society and the environment. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines under the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral field. Since the transfer of the fossil fuels portion of the energy research program to the newly organized Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in fiscal year 1975, Bureau research has been concentrated on increasing mineral production, decreasing energy usage through more efficient processing, and decreasing material losses caused by corrosion. Concurrently, research is being addressed to improved coal-preparation techniques, especially to expanding utilization of low-grade coals and coals difficult to beneficiate, which are essential for reducing the need for petroleum and natural gas supplies and for redirecting our energy consumption. Fluctuations in the availability of foreign sources of minerals, metals, and fuels due to political and economic variability among nations have necessitated intensified investigation into coal mining, uranium-ore processing, and geothermal energy sources-three alternatives that can help to alleviate the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy.
