The object of this research was to investigate the technical feasibility of preparing chromium metal by the thermal decomposition of bisbenzene chromium. Bisbenzene chromium, a pi-bonded sandwich type organometallic compound, was thermally decomposed under reduced pressure to form a metal plate on a heated substrate. Metal recovery was close to 100 percent of theoretical, with deposition rates up to 20.8 mg/hr/cm2. Metal purity was dependent not only upon the purity of the starting material, but also upon the sublimation rate of bisbenzene chromium. Total detectable metallic impurities ranged from a low of 18 ppm to several hundred ppm. In general, metallic impurities were less than 100 ppm. Carbon, the major nonmetallic impurity, ranged from less than 0.3 percent to more than 10 percent. The carbon contamination is most likely a result of the decomposition of the organic portion of bisbenzene chromium. An unusual property of some of the deposits was their outstanding corrosion resistance. Unlike pure electrolytic chromium, which dissolves readily, these deposits were insoluble in hot mineral acids.

This report summarizes the work done by the Koppers Company, Incorporated, in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines on the commercial evaluation of the primary low-temperature tars produced from Texas lignite in the Rockdale, Tex., plant of the Aluminum Company of America in conjunction with the Texas Power and Light Company. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in this project is twofold. First, through its cooperative agreement with the Texas Power and Light Company the Bureau has assisted in the technical design and practical operation of the prototype, externally heated, entrained-state carbonizer for producing char for electric-power production and for primary low-temperature tar. Second, the first successful operation of the prototype carbonizers employing the Bureau of Mines-Parry process on lignitic coal in 1953-54 led to the production of large quantities of primary lignitic tar, concerning which too little was known or had heretofore been published in this country.

The inputs of capital and labor to support future iron ore production were developed by the Bureau of Mines from projections of iron demand and estimates of capital and labor requirements. Trends in technologic change and the organization of production were analyzed. Labor requirement schedules for iron ore mining and beneficiating were constructed from aggregate inter-temporal trends and 1970 cross-sectional analysis of mines and mills. A sup-ply schedule of the capital requirement for mine-mill-pellet plants was developed from U.S. and Canadian experience. The structure of demand for iron to the year 2000 was examined as well as the availability of resources. Projections of capital and labor requirements to 2000 were constructed under two international patterns of iron ore supply to the United States. The most likely model is for a continuation of the 70 percent United States-30 percent foreign shares, expanding at an average 2.0 percent growth rate to 2000, and supported by a cumulative gross capital investment of $3.8 billion constant 1967 dollars and a labor force in the United States of 29,800 by 2000. The information content of projections is discussed, and the possible effects of international forces on supply are considered. A generalized methodology for estimating capital and labor requirements in other mineral industries also is included.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator for War and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee indicated that production of pig iron could be increased. appreciably if present blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke.4/ Nonvarying percentages of ash , sulfur , and fixed carbon in the coke , together with uniform physical characteristics , such as size , strength , and porosity , would aid the blast -furnace operator greatly in his trial - and - error methods of obtaining maximum production . With nonuniform raw materials he must employ certain factors of safety in operation , such as an excess of coke , an excess of limestone , and operation of the furnace below the maximum rate . Even so , he often has trouble from iron not being up to specifications , hot tops , high blowing pressures , furnace hanging up , etc. The more uniform his raw materials (of which coke is probably the most important) , the nearer to ideally can he run his furnace and thereby save raw material and increase production . One cause of nonuniformity of the coke produced by ordinary American plant practice is the prevailing lack of precise control of the bulk density ' of the coal charge in the byproduct oven . This report summarizes the available information on the subject of bulk density of crushed coal and its control . It includes brief reviews of some of the literature , some results obtained at plants visited by the authors , and results of a few preliminary tests made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines .

This report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Part I contains the results of laboratory scale experiments which were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the formation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallugical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and an iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap are chromium(Cr)-93 percent, nickel(Ni)-99 percent, cobalt(Co)-96 percent, molybdenum(Mo)-92 percent. Part II encompasses a preliminary engineering design of a pilot plant capable of treating 100 pounds(lb) of superalloy scrap per hour. Also included is an economic analysis of the operation of the pilot plant.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYOverall red-ore reserves in the Birmingham, Ala., area were estimated in 1910 by E. F. Burchard 4/. Since then mining has progressed into areas classed by Burchard as ""unavailable for exploitation"" under conditions existing at that time. This is understandable when it is considered that red iron ore was valued at $1.19 a gross ton at the mine in Birmingham in 19102/ and by 1948 had risen 300 percent; 6/ that skips had replaced cars in slope haulage; that mechanical loading and rubber-tired haulage had replaced hand loading and mule or locomotive haulage; and that other more efficient mining methods had been introduced. Intensive study during the intervening 40 years has been given to ways and means for upgrading the low-grade ores in the area and combining or blending them with raw red and brown ores for improved blast-furnace feed.It is reasonable to expect that future progress in mining efficiency and increased knowledge of the beneficiation characteristics of marginal ores will permit extraction of red-iron minerals now considered uneconomic.The Bureau of Mines has undertaken to restudy iron-ore reserves of the Birmingham area to determine what tonnage and grades of mineral are present; what is necessary to make them amenable to mining; what further advancement is possible in beneficia¬tion methods; and where increased production may be obtained in the area if and when required. This study has been underway for the past 2 years, but research into the beneficiation of marginal ores has been in progress at the Southern Experiment Station for the past 30 years. Many results of that research have been adopted in commercial practice in the area. Other results have not been published but are pre¬sented here in condensed form as an important factor in assessing marginal deposits with respect to their importance as ore reserves.An interim discussion of the salient features of past history and progress, as well as the data developed during the years of research in beneficiation at this station and the present field investigation, will make for a better understanding of the present position as well as be useful in evaluating future potentialities. Discussion in this paper is confined to the main Birmingham Basin area, which contains the largest concentration of hematite ores in the district."

A commercial, battery-powered mine vehicle has been equipped for remote operation in coal mines. This vehicle is controlled by an operator from the remote station. Command signals originating at the remote station as well as video and data signals originating on board the vehicle are relayed between the remote station and vehicle using a single coaxial line. This coaxial line is normally 2,000 feet in length and is reeled in and out from a drum mounted aboard the vehicle The vehicle has a maximum speed of 6 ft/sec and a minimum speed of 4 ft/sec using 36-volt excitation of the traction motor. If this traction motor is excited by two of the three batteries, 24-volt excitation, the vehicle will travel at approximately 2 ft/sec. The speed can be reduced by the operator to 1 ft/sec. This vehicular system has been tested in coal mines. Presently, the major limitation of this system is associated with fatigue failure of the splices in the coaxial line and lack of mobility caused by its 3-wheel design.

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.

Two sizes of Pennsylvania anthracite were gasified in the new-type Lurgi pressure generator at the Dorsten, Germany, works of the Steinkohlengas, A. G. These tests demonstrated that Chestnut-size anthracite and a Rice-Buckwheat mixture containing 27 and 19 percent ash, respectively, could be gasified satisfactorily at an elevated pressure in a fixed bed with oxygen and steam. These coals were especially prepared to approximate a rough-cleaned coal and a washed and screened product. The operating data obtained from the two tests and materials requirements are summarized. A wide range of reactant ratios could not be tested, nor could optimum operating conditions be determined, as the generator was being used throughout the testing program, employing normal operating practices, to produce gas for the gas grid; and the most economical coal, steam, and oxygen ratios may not have been used. Comparative costs are presented of the raw materials required for producing a high-B.t.u. gas, based on the operational data obtained from these tests and, to some extent, on data extrapolated from laboratory experimentation. A flowsheet of a proposed process for producing a high-B.t.u. gas by Lurgi gasification, followed by methanation, is also included.

This Bureau of Mines report is devoted to descriptions of systems that provide in-mine wired telephone service. Although they may incorporate other features, each system described functions to allow one telephone to selectively access another telephone. Except for the paper on Conventional Telephone Equipment, the equipment described is newly developed and specifically designed to satisfy the requirements of underground mine communications.

"Petroleum engineering is a comparatively new branch of engineering, with which few people, even petroleum operators and mining engineers, are thoroughly familiar. Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. Sludge ponds of fine coal, fine soil, and water created behind large piles of coarse coal waste can present hazardous conditions; this is a Bureau of Mines report of the subsurface physical property data developed on the fine coal waste materials that make up the core areas of two typical coal waste impoundments. These data will help define more completely the engineering properties of this problem area of the structures. Additional calorific, chemical, and mineralogical data were obtained on the coal waste materials to determine possible uses or development of byproducts. The possibility of extracting alumina from coal ash was also investigated.

This report describes a processing method developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to produce high-quality flake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. The kish produced by current steelmaking practices is a mixture of graphite, desulfurization slag, and iron that is skimmed from the molten iron feed to the basic oxygen furnace. It is estimated that the graphite content of kish discarded by U.S. steel plants is more than sufficient to meet the total U.S. demand for flake graphite. That need is now filled by natural graphite from foreign sources. Kish was treated by a combination of screening and hydraulic classification to produce a concentrate containing greater than 70 pct graphite. Leaching of the concentrate with hydrochloric acid solution gave a graphite product with 95-pct purity. An optional secondary leaching operation with hydrofluoric acid produced graphite with a purity of 98 pet or greater. The flake size of graphite from kish ranged from 10 mesh down. Evaluation of test samples by industrial graphite users indicated that kish graphite is a suitable substitute for the natural material for most uses. A process flowsheet and material balance for pilot plant design are presented.

The Kokomo (Tenmile) mining district has had an output valued between $20 and $30 million, mostly from production of silver, lead, and zinc, since 1878. For many years before World War II, there was little production, as the complex nature of the ores made them unattractive at existing metal prices. Under the stimulus of the war, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines studied they district, and in October 1944 the Bureau of Mines began an exploration project, which included dia¬mond drilling, bulldozer trenching, and geophysical surveying. Project work was continued until March 1949, except for short recesses during 1945, 1947, and 1948. Forty-five diamond-drill holes, totaling about 13,000 feet, were drilled from underground and surface stations on the various properties in the district. Eleven bulldozer trenches, abut 2,400 linear feet, were excavated in an attempt to uncover the outcrop of the middle Quail limestone. These trenches ranged from 100 to 485 feet in length and reached a maximum depth of 15 feet. A limited geophysical investigation was made during the summer of 1946. The length of the traverses were: Magnetic, 990 feet; resistivity, 6,250 feet; and self-potential, 69,780 feet.

[Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]

This report presents new findings and consolidates previously published data to provide a single reference containing a concise and comprehensive description of the Bureau's work on electrolytic chromium. Two separate systems for electrolytic-chromium recovery were developed, one designated as the oxidized system the other as the reduced system. The electrowinning of chromium metal follows the dissolution of chromium from the ore or from ferrochrome and its separation from gangue and metallic impurities. Chromite was first solubilized by pressure digestion at slightly elevated temperatures in an oxidized acid solution using Na2Cr2O7 as an oxidizing agent. Later it was found that a sodium-free electrolyte was preferable, using return-cell anolyte containing H2SO4 and Cr03 as the oxidizing agent. Gangue materials were separated from the soluble metallics by filtration; and, after the Cr+3 had been stabilized, the metallic impurities were separated as crystalline ammonium salts by vacuum crystallization.
