Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solidphase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method. However, it has been found that the ammonium extraction buffer does not dequately bring insoluble CrVI compounds into solution during the UE process. Thus, it was deemed necessary to modify the field method so that it would provide acceptable recoveries for insoluble CrVI compounds. To this end, a more alkaline extraction solution—sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer—was investigated. The modified procedure using the highly alkaline extraction solution was demonstrated to be compatible with SAE-SPE cartridges when determining insoluble CrVI in air filter samples. It was found that the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer was equally effective for complete dissolution of both insoluble and soluble forms of CrVI. Furthermore, the modified procedure met desired performance criteria established for air sampling and analytical methods. "A group of bisbenzylisoouinoline alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silica-induced fibrosis in animal models [1, 2]. The objective the present study was to characterize the binding of several of these alkaloids to phosphatidylcholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods, respectively. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, chiral configurations, and double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is a highly effective agent in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, certain analogues of tetrandrine such as curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In conclusion, the results of these studies indicate that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of this class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds. These data also suggest that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.INTRODUCTIONInhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of silicosis. This fibrotic disease is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lungs with the progressive development of pulmonary dysfunction [3, 4]. Many theories concerning the etiology of silicosis involve silica-induced activation of alveolar macrophages. Evidence indicates that in vitro silica exposures result in the generation of chemiluminescence, and the release of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from alveolar macrophages [5]. Activation of alveolar macrophages has also been demonstrated after intratracheal instillation or inhalation of silica [5, 6]. Such excess release of reactive products from pulmonary phagocytes has been associated with damage to the lung parenchyma [7, 8]. In addition, silica exposure results in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages, which enhance proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by these pneumocytes [9-12]."

From time to time interest has been evidenced in transporting coal with water in pipe lines. About the year 1895, United States patents broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water through pipelines were granted to W. C. Andrews. His process was used to some extent in pumping anthracite culm and waste back into the worked-out portions of the mines. About 1905, W. T. Donnely was granted patents relating to pumping anthracite silt away from the breakers. From about 1913 until 1924, a British engineer, Gilbert G. Bell, used a short pipeline to convey coal with water from barges on the Thames River to the Hammersmith Electricity Generating Station, London. Minus 5-inch coal was transferred 660 yards through an 8-inch pipe. Some trouble was experienced with fine coal, which tended to plug the line. Bell made several proposals to transport coal by pipeline overland from the Midlands to London, a distance of about 100 miles, but these were never adopted. This survey is concerned mainly with the problems presented by actual pipeline transportation of coal with water. It is assumed that the coal will have been processed to remove most of the abrasive impurities by conventional methods prior to introduction into the line, and that it has been crushed to the required top size. Dewatering at the discharge end of the line is considered part of the conventional cleaning process. There still remain many pump-performance and behavior of water-coal mixture problems that can be solved only by actual performance tests. It is recognized that the distribution of coal to other than very large users is not changed. Large storage areas would be required to supply seasonal markets. Large users, such as power plants and heavy industries, could be supplied by branch lines directly to the point of use, It is also recognized that pipe lines might not be able to carry a full range of sized coal to meet market demands in many areas.

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: ? Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. ? Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. ? Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

This report presents the results of laboratory and continuous mill-beneficiation tests conducted at the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electra Development laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on nonsulfide lead ore from the Sherman mine, Leland district, near Burke, Idaho. The predominant lead-bearing mineral in the ore sample treated was pyromorphite, a minor ore mineral of lead. Known reserves of pyromorphite lead ore in the United States are limited, although an appreciable tonnage of this type of ore is found in the Sherman mine. Very little pyromorphite is being mined in this mine or in the United States. This beneficiation problem presented a unique opportunity to study the mineral-dressing properties of a less widely known lead mineral, and consequently adds valuable knowledge to the ways of beneficiating ores containing nonsulfide lead values. This mineral-dressing problem was successful with conventional concentration methods of flotation and Gravity separation.

This report contains a summary of designs, specifications, costs, and schedules developed for a prototype oil-shale demonstration mining program to be undertaken at the Horse Draw site in the Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The objective of the demonstration program is to assess the feasibility of extracting oil shale and associated saline minerals from deep, rich oil shale zones which occur within the central portion of the Basin. Four mining systems were specified for demonstration. These include (1) chamber and pillar mining with backfill; (2) sublevel stoping with backfill; (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence; and (4) block caving. Commercial-scale designs for each system were modified and scaled down as required to achieve program objectives. The demonstration mine layout and design includes specifications for ore handling, backfilling, ventilation, dewatering, maintenance, and supply systems. A feature of particular interest in the design is the combination of block caving and sublevel stoping methods into a single unit for demonstration of subsidence mining systems in deep oil shale deposits. The report also contains a detailed breakdown of projected capital and operating costs for the demonstration mining program.

A computer program was written for the design of a shell and tube type heat exchanger on a price optimum basis. The program was designed to meet the following requirements: (1) Triangular pitch; (2) single or multiple pass; (3) heating or cooling; and (4) no change in phase. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube sizes and standard pitch. Pressure drop both inside and outside were computed and the nearest standard shells having at least the required area were listed. With this information, the estimator can select the heat exchanger best suited for the need. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube sizes and spacing by reading in much of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data in tabular form.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines demonstrated that nonionic surfactants increased the leaching rate of copper in the flask leaching of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate if sufficient ferric sulfate was present. This research was continued by the Bureau in Part 2 to further explore the application of nonionic surfactants to the dump leaching of chalcopyrite. A polyoxyethylene lauryl ether was selected as the superior nonionic surfactant tested at 25° and 50° C. The addition of the surfactant increased copper leaching by 116 pct at 25° C and 1.0 pct solids and by 61 pct at 50° C and 0.5 pct solids at Fe 3+ concentrations greater than 1 g/L. At 0.1.0 g/L Fe 3+ and below, the addition of the surfactant produced as much as a 35 pct decrease in leaching. Each of the nonionic surfactants studied was found to be heavily adsorbed by a typical chalcopyrite ore, which poses a serious barrier to the application of nonionic surfactants in an actual chalcopyrite dump.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

"The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

"Many manganese ores contain from 0.1 to several percent cobalt. If such ores arc used for the production of ferromanganese, the cobalt is lost; on the other hand, if they are used for the production of electrolytic manganese, the cobalt can be recovered during the purification of the electrolyte.The production of cobalt in the United States is insignificant compared to the amount consumed, most of which is imported from the Belgian Congo. Cobalt-bearing manganese ores may therefore constitute an important reserve of cobalt in times of emergency. Moreover, the combined value of manganese and cobalt in some ores may be sufficient to warrant the recovery of both metals by the electrolytic manganese process, whereas the recovery of either manganese or cobalt alone might not be economically feasible.In view of the potential importance of manganese ores as a source of cobalt, a survey has boon made of the cobalt content of manganese ores. Most of the data have been obtained from analyses made in the Bureau of Mines, but valuable data have also been obtained from publications of the Geological Survey, various State publications, and other sources. Unfortunately, most published analyses of manganese ores do not include cobalt determinations; when such analyses were fairly detailed, but did not include cobalt, it was presumed that cobalt was not present in significant quantity.Information on the cobalt content of domestic manganese ores is given in table 1. Ores containing 0.1 percent or more cobalt are listed in table 2, and the districts in which such ores occur are shown in figure 1. Most of the known cobalt-bearing manganese ores occur in the southeastern part of the United States. A group of deposits in central Arizona and a few scattered deposits in other States also' contain cobalt."

This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

This study is a survey of supply and demand for minerals, metals, alloys, and compounds used by the chemical industries in the Ohio River Basin (ORB) area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia during 1967. Data for the study were obtained from completed questionnaires received from chemical manufacturers and from interviews with officials of chemical companies and mineral producers and distributors. The information includes kind, quality, quantity, values, sources, specifications, uses, and methods of transportation. Results of the study show that of the total value of mineral materials consumed by the chemical industry, manufacture of inorganic chemicals consumed 46 percent; fertilizers, 22 percent; and soaps and detergents, 19 percent. Fifteen commodities accounted for 91 percent of the total value of mineral materials consumed. Five of these--phosphates, potash, salt, sulfur, and titanium dioxide--accounted for 59 percent of the total.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January I, 1965, to December 31, 1969.
