Split round blasting is commonly practiced in underground uranium mining in the Big Indian ore belt located in Southeast Utah. The technique is used to prevent ore dilution by separately blasting the ore from the face.

In the production environment, the current limits of blasting are most often defined by the ability of the operator to drill blastholes from a planned collar location to the required toe location. Many problems which are initially described as deficiencies in blasting or support are directly related to drilling. The assessment of support performance and blasting efficiency must begin with a detailed examination of drilling practices.

Until 1990, all production of asbestos ore at Cassiar was by open-pit methods. With the impending exhaustion of open-pit reserves, a decision was made in February 1988 to continue mining underground, using the block-caving technique.

The concept of optimum fragmentation in surface mining operations, i.e. the degree of fragmentation to which corresponds the lowest overall associated costs of drilling, blasting, loading, haulage and crushing, was developed more than thirty years ago. Recent field investigations using novel technologies, which have been completed by ICI Explosives Canada and by others, indicate that this ultimate goal of optimum fragmentation is closer to becoming reality.

This paper discusses some basic fundamentals in compressed air system design and layouts that should always be considered in planning or evaluating a compressed air distribution system in Construction and Mining. Often times, mining operations use central air or "power house" type systems that more closely resemble a typical industrial or plant compressed air distribution system. This paper does not attempt to cover this type of system.

With the ever increasing public sensitivity to our environment, the blasting industry can no longer be concerned with just drilling and blasting. Government regulations, augmented by public pressure, require that the industry must be more diligent in preventing spills, disposing of distressed products and packaging materials, controlling fumes and dust, preventing product contamination, developing environmental impact studies, and preventing unnecessary regulations. These liabilities in conjunction with those of vibration, air overpressure and flyrock will continue to greatly impact the industry.

This paper reviews empirical and analytical information about window breakage due to airblast. As is the case with damage to structures caused by ground vibrations, a fixed break/no break threshold is inapplicable and window damage must be expressed in terms of a statistical probability. The information is summarized in a graph showing the probability of windows being broken by a given level of overpressure.

The seismic effects resulting from blasting are still a problem today although a great deal of research has been conducted in this field. A great amount of data defining the seismic effects can be collected with the proper instrumentation, however because of the difference in building materials, construction methods and foundations the characteristics of the seismic wave can not be directly correlated to the building response and possible damage.

The position of a major joint in relation to a blasthole has a significant effect in presplitting. Broad research into the combined effects of firing two decoupled blastholes has been performed in the past. The effects of joints simulated between two blastholes has also been evaluated. However, no attempt has been made to investigate the splitting effects produced by firing a single decoupled blasthole. This paper presents the results of such an investigation.

"Tenn Luttrell Company (TLC) is a major lime and limestone producer in the eastTennessee area. The property, which isreferred to as the Chesney Mine, has been mined from the surface and underground overthe past 20 years. The ore body consists of three major zones of chemical grade limestonewhich lay at a dip of 30 _ 65 degrees. In July of 1989, Tenn Luttrell Company made thedecision to reopen the underground operations which had been suspended during a time ofincreased surface mining."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated flyrock and burden movement from blasting at several limestone and basalt quarries in the upper midwest. Blasts have been studied at 14 different sites using high-speed cinematography. Blasting was accomplished in 75- and 150-mmdiameter holes using a variety of explosives. Films from each blast were analyzed to show burden velocities, observed flyrock distance, and direction of throw in relation to the shot layout. This technique, in some cases, allowed determining point of origin and cause of the flyrock as well as the flyrock range.

Air and ground vibration from blasting is influenced by the delay pattern that is used. Wavefronts from blastholes fired in a blasting pattern can combine in certain circumstances to give increased blast vibration levels. A simple computer model has been developed which shows the combined effect of wavefronts from a multi-hole blast and identifies if wavefront reinforcement occurs, and permits delay patterns to be designed which will avoid or reduce wavefront reinforcement.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the case history of a blasting project conducted jointly by Precision Blasting Services and Cherokee Explosives. It is the intent of the authors to show how blasting could be done in controlled fashion near very expensive computer controlled machinery. The job was done in minimal time with no complaints or allegations of damage in spite of the fact that blasting was conducted within five feet of the equipment and with the 32 acre plant fully operational, with machine operators working within 10 feet of the blasting site.

Laboratory studies have indicated that the crystallization and desensitization of microballoon sensitized emulsion explosives start immediately after shocking or pre-compression. However, the question of whether or not the shocked emulsion could be worsened by the growth of crystallization or recovered by rebounding back to lower densities has been rarely examined under actual rock blasting conditions. This study was primarily intended to investigate the desensitization characteristics of two commonly used emulsion products in terms of blasthole spacing and delay duration. In the experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.

Complacency on the job may have very little to do with not caring or a poor attitude. It may be just as simple as failing to continue to recognize the hazards surrounding us throughout the day. One of the requirements in open pit gold mines is to minimise the mixing of ore and waste. Dilution can be reduced by choke blasting and control of the initiating sequencing. The authors have used the DMC computer model (developed at SANDIA) to examine the effects of timing and charge distribution on ore dilution. The model has been calibrated by measurements of vertical uplift derived from high speed videos made at the Dome Super Pit in Timmins.

On-the-job and "hands-on" training programs which attempt to train newcomers to blasting with instructors whose only qualification is their experience can easily miss the boat. Organized training programs which utilize competent instructors and a well developed format are necessary if we wish to provide a meaningful program of instruction, But, let's not go overboard and attempt to provide a level of training which goes far beyond the scope of the worker's duties and responsibilities, and "need to know",
