In last decade, along with its booming Chinese economy, China?s higher education has experienced rapid growth. In 2010, the number of various colleges totals more than 3500, with 2.2 million faculties registered. Currently there are almost 30 million students studying in the colleges, 3 times more than 10 years ago. Mineral Processing was initiated in 1949 as a sub-discipline of Mining Engineering, one of the 13 first level disciplines. Mineral Processing is now established in 34 Chinese colleges, recruiting 2600 undergraduate students, 540 postgraduate students and 100 PhD students every year. A further 9 institutes offer postgraduate education in this field. More than 3000 graduates majoring in Mineral Processing join the industry or institutions each year. The four-year undergraduate teaching and practical training in the colleges is designed to produce qualified mineral processing professionals. This includes courses in mathematics and natural science, fundamental engineering and basic and specialization courses. Recently, the ?Excellent Engineer Program? was launched to strengthen students? practical capabilities. This is a 3+1 teaching and training model; 3 years of theoretical course study plus 1 accumulated year of various practical studies, either inside or outside the college. As for graduate employment, mining-related major graduates have been in a good demand thanks to the intensive investment in mineral sector by Chinese companies. The shortage of experienced metallurgists generates a greater than 90% employment rate for Mineral Processing graduates. However, the biggest problem we are still facing is the gap between the quality of the graduates and the requirements of industry, as a result of occupation attraction, teaching systems, faculty quality, and so forth. Another problem is international orientation. Although nowadays Chinese-foreign cooperation in college education is popular, collaborative mineral related projects are far less common, leaving much room for improvement. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, we still have the right reasons to estimate continued prosperity in the minerals sector as well as mineral processing education in China. In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration

"Fe-Ti oxides concentrates produced from heavy mineral sand deposits are widely used for the production of titanium dioxide pigments that are critical components of white paint, plastics and paper. According to mining industry, the Fe-Ti concentrates mostly consists of three phases: ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile. However, a few mineralogical studies have shown that the variety of Fe-Ti oxides found in sand deposits is far more complex, mostly due to alteration processes. The aim of this contribution is to characterize in detail by means of Qemscan analyses the mineralogy of the three main concentrates (ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile) produced by the Grande Côte Operation (GCO) mineralurgical plant in Senegal. The ultimate goal is to characterize the different products and textures formed during the natural ilmenite alteration processes, to localize the phases carrying the main impurities (Cr and P), and finally to determine the physical properties of each mineral component to improve metal recoveries. Along alteration processes, Ti content increase. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is progressively transformed into pseudorutile (Fe2Ti3O9) particles which could also be altered and transformed into hydroxylian pseudorutile [FeTi6O12(OH)3.3H2O] or complex blends of anatase microcrystals (TiO2). These transformations are accompanied by significant changes in particle textures. Microporosity and fractures appear and the impurity content also increases. Anatase rich microcrystal assemblages, so far described as Leucoxene, could be identified to consist of grains with higher porosities, water contents and higher intrapore impurities. These particles are the main carriers of chromium and phosphorus. The observed mineral transition textures have a significant impact on the ore dressing processes. During these transformations, the physical properties of these phases change, the magnetic susceptibility as well as densities decreases, due to the increase in porosity. The separation of particles, especially those with high porosity will help improving the GCO mineralurgical plant performance and to reduce the impurity contents in finals products."

This contribution deals with the mineral processing of Li-silicate greisen-type ores comprising of quartz, topaz and zinnwaldite (lithium-rich mica). The origin of the greisen-type ores processed is the Ore Mountains(Germany) where it is explored as a potential resource for the production of lithium carbonate. The goal is to develop a process chain for the enrichment of zinnwaldite using dry techniques only. As basis for the investigation the process chain, which historically was used to process the greisen focused on cassiterite and wolframite, is taken and modified towards the zinnwaldite. Starting with crushed material with particle sizes smaller than 35 millimeters, investigations on different approaches to grinding to liberate mica from gangue are carried out. Concentrates of zinnwaldite are then produced by magnetic separation of size fractions. To assess the success of grinding, classification and separation, mineral liberation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy are used. The amount of lithium measured in the sample with atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to calculate the content of zinnwaldite based on its known mineral chemistry. Combined with the particle size distributions, product qualities are determined. Altogether, this allows the thorough evaluation of the success of comminution with focus on following steps of concentration. "For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. The importance of flotation technology in the global economy is significant. "The characterization of reagent-mineral interactions in flotation systems of finely intergrown ores holds difficult challenges for the applicability of standard techniques like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments or renders them impossible due to a lack of sufficient samples in terms of quality and quantity. This disadvantage may not apply to more sophisticated techniques, but these often do not work in an aqueous environment. We present the utilization of an atomic force microscope with a hydrophobic colloidal probe to characterize the wettabilities of individual mineral domains of an ore sample, while additional spectral information is gathered by Raman spectroscopy. The exemplary ore sample investigated is mainly containing cassiterite and quartz, therefore the reference measurements like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments were carried out with this binary system as a comparison. The focus of the study lies in the correlation of data gathered by the atomic force microscope and the Raman spectrometer with data from standard techniques. Finally, the applicability of the colloidal probe atomic force microcopy technique for reagent-mineral investigations is critically evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe focus of this paper is the application of colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) for theinvestigation of reagent-mineral interactions on a binary system of cassiterite and quartz. This and similar concepts using hydrophobic AFM probes have been applied by multiple authors (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b; Wada et al., 2017; Xie et al., 2017). The hydrophobic interaction is the main interacting mechanism for the hydrophobic colloidal probe with hydrophobic sample surfaces and the long range attractive component has been accounted to nanobubbles on the interacting surfaces (Yakubov et al., 2000). More detailed information on nanobubbles are available in two reviews compiled by Attard and Hampton (Attard, 2003; Hampton and Nguyen, 2010). This paper is based on the work by Rudolph and Peuker comparing different AFM based measuring concepts, additionally gathering data with Raman spectroscopy and correlating results of microflotation and CPAFM measurements (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b)."

"The recovery of copper and iron from carbonaceous sulfide ore is of economic and environmental interest despite its processing difficulty. Hydrometallurgical methods can be used to concentrate sulfide metals of these hard-to treat ores in a simple and eco-friendly manner. In this study, high pressure acid leaching process was comprehensively studied to dissolve metals from an ore with organic carbon and carbonaceous gangue material using autoclave equipment. The sample used for the experiment was reduced to an average particle size of 75 µm after undergoing flotation to reduce carbonaceous gangue minerals. A comparative study on two leaching reagents of sulfuric acid and iron sulfate and their dosage was used to observe dissolution of copper and iron. Other parameters of temperature (90-170 0C), solid-liquid ratio (1:10, 1:5, 1:3 and 1:1) were investigated through kinetic studies to access the influence of organic carbon and carbonaceous material on recovery of copper and iron. Materials balancing analysis was used to evaluate the efficiency of metal dissolution. The effects of parameters on leaching rate and concentration was demonstrated. Results obtained from the experiment indicated low concentrations of copper and iron in pregnant leached solutions, which was attributed to acid consumption by organic carbon and carbonaceous material in feed. However, the high efficiency rates of 92.4% and 86.3 % for copper and iron respectively in sulfuric acid can be concluded that leaching of concentrates of carbonaceous ore is possible provided system control on type of acid, pH and temperature. The purpose of this research is important in understanding mechanism involved in dissolution of copper and iron in concentrates of carbonaceous ore and marks an improvement in leaching of highly contaminated ores."

"Particle-bed compressive stressing is the main work mechanism of comminution by high pressure grinding rolls(HPGR). An experimental study on comminution and mineral liberation of two copper sulfide ores was carried out using a piston-die compressive stressing rig to simulate the situation of comminution with HPGR as the final-grinding device. The tests carried out include compressive comminution tests on particle-bed with narrow-size feed, and the locked-cycle comminution test on particle-bed with broad-size feed, which was then compared to a corresponding locked-cycle test of ball-mill grinding. The narrow-size feed is made up of particles in the size range 2.36~3.35 mm, whereas the broad-size feed of particles in the size range 0~3.35 mm. The liberation analysis for copper-mineral in the comminution products was accomplished using BPMA system – an automatic mineral liberation analyzer developed by BGRIMM. The influences of the stressing intensity and the method of comminution on the copper mineral liberation are discussed in terms of product size distribution, copper-metal deportation among size fractions, distribution of copper mineral among particle-size and particle-grade classes, degree of mineral liberation in size class as well as degree of mineral liberation overall.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, comminution process commonly applied in mineral processing is a flowsheet consisting of crushing of crude ore with conventional crushers, followed by grinding of the crushed ore in tumbling mills. In last decades, the energy-efficient HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) has found its application in mineral processing, mostly as tertiary or quaternary crusher to generate a fine-crushed product either as feed to subsequent grinding or as feed to a pre-beneficiation process before further grinding. Compared with the process of conventional crushing followed by grinding in ball mill, this mode of HPGR-application can achieve energy saving to some extent by reducing particle size of the feed to ball milling, and by reducing amount of the feed to ball milling if a significant portion of tailings in relatively coarse particle-size range can be discarded at the pre-beneficiation stage. In recent years, the approaches of letting HPGR take more comminution work from ball mill by applying it in semi-finish grinding mode or even finish grinding mode have been discussed (Burchardt, 2014). Although HPGR finish-grinding has been successfully applied in the cement industry for grinding of cement clinker and raw materials, this mode of HPGR application has yet rarely been implemented in mineral processing, despite the advantage of more energy-saving and other potential benefits such as preferential breakage, internal damage of particles and enhanced mineral liberation which may lead to a better downstream processing performance. The reasons for the retardation of the progress of this kind of HPGR-application in the mineral industry lies not only in that a finish-grinding with HPGR has to be operated in dry condition whereas most of ore-beneficiation processes like flotation are operated in wet condition, but also in that there are large variety of ore materials with various complexity of processing technology, which need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis with a lot of test work, in order to evaluate the potential advantages or disadvantages of this application."

The importance of brown coal as a raw material is currently given by growing energy needs of Czech Republic. More than 70% of mined brown coal comes from North Bohemian Basin these days. Mining of brown coal is run in four mining locations. They are geologically different and the parameters of mining coal are quite different too. This requires a little bit different methodology of both extraction and reclamation. Methods of reclamation works in the region are given mainly by the characteristics of overburden rocks appearing in the upper horizon of recuperated localities. The difficulties of the North Bohemian mine dumps reclamation works are caused by extremely unfavourable properties of rocks poured down to the majority of mine dumps. These are mainly rocks of the overlaying strata and the rocks strata of brown coal bed. Main materials poured down to the mine dumps are sands, clayey sands and kaolin ? illitic clays. Admixtures in filled rocks consist of organic (coal) mass, siderite and pyrite. These rocks are mechanically instable with respect to the wind and water erosion and during weathering they are getting unfavourable, acid (phytotoxic) nature, due to the influence of SO3 and Al ions. External and internal dumps of open pit mines are significant part of the North ? Bohemian landscape sustained by excavation. Their as fast as possible preparation and gradual integration into ecosystem of the area is interest of both citizens of region and mining companies. The paper briefly summarizes the methodology of restoration of the largest dumps of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the results of analyses and evaluation of samples taken on restored localities Rado-vesice dump, Strimice dump, Ru?odol dum pand internal dump of Bilina mine. An example of modern non-tradicional restoration methods is the restoration of internal dump of Bilina mine (application of power plant stabilizer). According to observations and results of sample analyses the methods of restoration were selected to limit the erosion influence, adjust the chemical and physical composition of surface of Radovesice and Strimice dumps. The application of marlites and bentonite prevent the unfavourable weathering processes on dump surface. Compensation of Quaternary sediments was artifically formed here. The need of marlite ploughing in, application of organical substrates and vegetation preparation was proved on Radovesice dump. The conception of landscape reclamation of the largest dumps after finishing of mining, methodology of technical reclamation and well considered using of fertilizable soils are main results presented in this article.

The cohesive zone, where the ore fed into the blast furnace softens and melts, is critical to the blast furnace performance and stability due to its influence on the gas and solid flow. This paper de-scribes a project for the development of a process model to predict the cohesive zone properties and the results of its first step; the solid flow model. The process model is expected to describe a realistic solid burden flow and the formation of the cohesive zone, its shape, location, structure, permeability, and in particular the mineralogical changes within the cohesive zone. This will be achieved using various simulation and computing tools: a combination of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the DEM?CFD hybrid approach, together with models for the thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. The key benefits of the hybrid approach lie in the coupling of the continuous phase and the discrete particles, and the possibility of introducing thermodynamics and reaction kinetics into the system in a more realistic manner. Two DEM simulations are presented for a small scale blast furnace to investigate the influence of non-spherical particles on the solid flow. This influence can be observed from a more even solid flow pattern and a reduced deadman size. The results indicate the requirement to include non- spherical particles in a blast furnace simulation to achieve a realistic solid flow.

Water recycling is of prime importance in mineral processing due to consumption of large amount of water. This issue is vital in areas with a low rainfall such as Shahre-Babak (Kerman, Iran). Deep cone thickeners, unlike conventional thickeners, have a low diameter to height ratio where large amounts of flocculants are used to increase particles settling rates. The high bed heights (over 10 m) produce enough pressure to create a paste type underflow indicating maximum water recovery. Flocculent preparation, conditioning, and distribution along with the bed height are among the important factors affecting the performance. Four deep cones are used to recover water from the tailings of the plant. Plant data indicated that the thickener never reached the target underflow percent solids (63%) and the average underflow concentrations were between 49 and 57%. By modification and optimization of flocculent preparation and distribution methods the underflow percent solids increased by 3-4%. This translated to an increase of water recovery from 67 to 73%. This was equivalent of 53000 m3 saving in monthly water consumption. Keywords: deep cone thickener, water recovery, flocculant, copper tailings

Traditional mineral processing techniques are more and more difficult to recover the increasingly low grade phosphate ores today. Although bioleaching method has been attempted to process low grade ores in hydrometallurgical field due to economical and environmental reason, it has been hardly used in leaching phosphate ore at home and abroad. Strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were collected and separated from the acid drainage of a coal mine in Anhui province of China. Ultraviolet irradiation and Microwave inducement were applied to the bacterial cultivation process to produce strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithi-obacillus ferrooxidans able to tolerate extremely low pH conditions and generate sulphuric acid by oxidizing elemental sulfur or sulphide and the mutagenesis can achieve higher leaching rate. The bioleaching result will improve more by the addition of Tween series surfactants.

The introduction and subsequent ascendancy of autogenous and semi-autogenous milling for comminution circuits has undoubtedly lead to many economic advantages. From a process viewpoint, however, at least one downside has been the sensitivity of these machines to process input variations. Foremost among these is ore competence, though feed size comes a close second. This sensitivity is due to the reliance of ag/sag mills on the feed ore for their grinding media competence and size. Autogenous (ag) mills are the most sensitive in this respect with semi-autogenous (sag) mills being increasingly less so as the ball charge is increased. Increasingly designers and operators are recognising the importance of feed size and the benefits of manipulating it to improve performance. This has been achieved by installing additional crushing/screening capacity ahead of the ag/sag, better operation of the primary crusher, better control of segregation cased by stockpiles and bins and by changing blast design/practices to modify the ROM size distribution. This paper describes the influence of feed size distribution on ag/sag mill performance with reference to a range of plant data. It particularly concentrates on how changing blasting practice to modify ag/sag feed size can have a considerable overall benefit.

At this time, over 300 tons of Au are used in electronic equipment each year with other precious and strategic metals such as Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Nb, Ta, etc. After the use-phase, the electronic devices become electronic waste (e-waste); consequently it is important to consider e-waste as a secondary supply for recovery of these metals. One of the most important components is the printed circuit boards (PCBs) because the amount of their precious metals is ten times higher than rich precious metals bearing ore. This paper presents the recovery of Au, Ag, Cu and Nb from PCBs of discarded computers using leaching column technique. The amount of these metals in used PCBs was: 613 g/ton of Au, 1515 g/ton of Ag, 36 g/ton of Nb and 23.4 % of Cu. The PCBs were crushed with a hammer mill until reaching a particle size between 3.33 mm to 0.43 mm. Then, it was leached with sodium cyanide solution in a glass column using the following conditions: sodium cyanide concentration 4 g/L, flux 20 L/kg PCBs day, pH between 10.5 to 11 and leaching time 15 days. Every day, after leaching, the pregnant solutions passed through a column with activated carbon to complete the closed loop system. The following recoveries were obtained: 46.6% of Au, 51.3% of Ag, 47.2% of Nb and 62.3 % of Cu. The products obtained are: a) loaded carbon that contains the desired metals and b) processed PCBs with precious metal contents. A preliminary technical-economic study shows the feasibility to create a small-scale PCBs recycling plant. The initial investment is on the order of US$ 155 639, considering the recovered metals from loaded carbon. The internal rate of return for 10 years period (IRR) and net present value (NPV) estimated are 27% and US$ 105 926 respectively. Baotou Baiyunerbo Mines Location in Inner Mongolia is a famous deposit of iron mineral and rare earth mineral accreting. The iron ore has very complicated ingredients and minerals composing. In the mine, there is not only magnetite ore but also hematite ore, so that it is impossible for high grade iron concentrate to adopt single wet low-intensity magnetic separation or high-intensity magnetic separation to concentrate iron mineral. Because of mixing the magnetite with hematite mineral in feed ore, recovery of iron of magnetite production system in the mineral processing plant is less than other mineral processing plants. Therefore, the research for increasing recovery of iron of the magnetite production system in the plant was undertaken. The paper presented the research for using dry magnetic separation to increase recovery of iron concentrate of the magnetite production system in the plant. It mainly includes dry magnetic separation test and wet magnetic separation and reverse flotation test. The test results indicated that dry magnetic separation is a important way to improve the feature of feed ore of the magnetite production system and to increase the recovery of iron. The recovery of iron may increase from about 70% to over 80%. The research also presented optimum operation parameters of the dry magnetic separator and the separation flowsheet. In conclusion, using dry magnetic separation to treat with feed ore of the magnetite production system in the plant to increase the recovery of iron is a feasible technique. The research present a new way for the mineral processing plant to made technology innovate to increase the recovery of iron concentrate of the plant in future.

"Process automation as an engineering discipline is more than control systems since it includes industrial instrumentation, such as sensors, transmitters and actuators, as well as control and supervision systems, collection and transmission of data and real-time software applications to supervise and control the operation of plants or industrial processes. In the last several decades, accelerated technological development has provided a variety of software and hardware tools to aid development, maintenance and continuous improvement of automated systems. These developments however seldom reach their full potential in real plants. There are many factors to be considered, among them human capital specific training and the organization model. In this paper, a methodology for training engineers in advanced control and supervision of flotation plants is presented based on study of the application of these technologies in hybrid pilot plants. Since experimentation in real plants may present undesirable risks and costs, and simulation studies are usually limited to some unrealistic conditions, a laboratory where on-line measurements of the hydrodynamic behaviour of a pilot plant is mixed with phenomenological models has been created. In this form, an environment as close as possible to a real plant can be recreated. A flotation column and a circuit of three pneumatic cells are fully instrumented and connected to a PLC and PC network. In the control room, students learn applications of classical PID control in a DCS environment, advanced predictive control, on-line process operation diagnosis, fault analysis, virtual sensors and expert-fuzzy systems. Several undergraduate and graduate courses and theses are supported by this Process Control Laboratory infrastructure. Examples of these applications are discussed."

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. "This article presents the results of comprehensive research on the quantitative distribution of gold content in the raw ore and tailings from the flotation enrichment process at the Ellatzite Med plant. The study is a quantitative and qualitative determination of the presence of gold in the ore processed by Ellatzite Med AD, as well as its behavior and distribution in the various metallurgical products of the flotation process. The representativeness of the samples taken is ensured by the frequency of sampling: four work shifts of sampling on different days within a period of four consecutive weeks. The form of gold present is determined both in the analyzed samples and in separate fractions - granulometric, magnetic, electromagnetic, heavy and light. A summarized diagram presents the phase distribution of gold in the final products of the dressing process. The results obtained are used for further analysis and evaluation of the actual technological parameters of the gold. It was established that an increase in the initial gold content, respectively in the content of native gold in the raw ore, with the current process, leads to an increase in gold losses, mostly in the native gold phase. The conducted analysis of the results from the comprehensive tests on determining the form of gold present in the various enrichment products gave rise to further research with the use of a Knelson centrifugal concentrator."

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Some of the grinding parameters that have been studied are:•,Gate versus overflow discharge•,Open versus closed circuit•,Different filling degrees•,Different shell liner profilesOnly grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own."
